An eSIM is a digital SIM built into a compatible phone, tablet or smartwatch. Instead of inserting a removable plastic card, you download a mobile-network profile to the device.
After activation, everyday use is basically the same: you keep a mobile number, make calls, send texts, use 4G or 5G, roam according to your plan and pay the same mobile bill. The practical difference is simply how the network identity reaches the device.
The simple difference

Should you choose eSIM?
For people with a compatible device, eSIM is a normal alternative to a physical SIM. It can make a digital setup, a second number or travel data more convenient. Its trade-off is that a move to a new phone can involve a provider transfer, app, replacement profile or new QR code rather than moving a card in a few seconds.
An eSIM can be useful for a work and personal number, a UK line plus travel data, or a backup network. The exact dual-SIM setup depends on the handset: some use physical SIM plus eSIM, while others allow several stored profiles or two active eSIMs.

Neither format improves signal or speed by itself. If the same tariff is offered both ways, coverage and allowance depend on the provider, network, tariff and device — not whether the SIM is digital or plastic.

How to check phone compatibility
There is no complete device database on this page, because handset variants and provider support change. Use this short check instead.
Find the exact model. Do not rely only on the product-family name.
Look for an EID. On many phones, dial *#06#; an EID is a strong sign the device has eSIM hardware.
Check settings. Look for “Add eSIM” in Mobile Service, Cellular, SIM Manager or Network settings.
Confirm with the manufacturer and provider. Hardware capability does not guarantee the provider supports that exact setup.
Compatible phones can support different numbers of stored or active eSIM profiles. Check the exact handset documentation.

How do you activate an eSIM?
The exact screen differs by provider and phone, but the broad process is similar: buy or request the eSIM, connect the device to Wi-Fi, install the plan through a QR code, app, carrier activation or transfer flow, label the line and test calls, texts and mobile data.
Do not assume an old QR code can always be reused. Replacement and reinstall rules differ by provider. Follow the current activation instructions for the exact provider and device.
Can I keep my existing number?
Yes. Moving from a physical SIM to eSIM with the same provider normally keeps the number, tariff and account. When changing provider, the format does not alter normal UK porting: text PAC to 65075 from the existing number, then give the PAC to the new provider when asked.
Moving an eSIM to a new phone
Possible routes include Apple or Android device transfer, a provider app, a replacement eSIM or a new QR code. Do not delete a working eSIM from the old phone until the new device has received the service and connected successfully.

Only then wipe, sell or trade in the old phone.
Security, battery, signal and travel
Security
An eSIM cannot simply be pulled out of a stolen phone and put in another handset, but it does not make SIM-swap or account-takeover fraud impossible. Use a strong provider password, secure email, device lock and any available account security controls.
Battery, signal and speed
eSIM does not inherently use more battery, improve coverage or make data faster. Running two mobile lines can use more power in some conditions, especially where one repeatedly searches for a weak signal.
Travel
On a compatible dual-SIM phone, you can keep a UK line for calls, texts and security codes while using another eSIM for travel data. Before travelling, label the lines, select the intended data line and check roaming settings.
A physical SIM may be the better format if you regularly move one line between phones, keep an older backup handset, have a badly damaged phone, or use a provider with restricted eSIM support. Lebara’s current new-customer rollout is a clear example of why device hardware and provider support must both be checked.

Does eSIM cost more?
Not necessarily. O2 explicitly states that its eSIM costs the same as a physical SIM. Check the exact provider and plan.
Can I use eSIM and physical SIM together?
Many compatible phones support physical SIM plus eSIM. Some newer phones can also use two active eSIMs; the exact arrangement depends on the handset.
How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?
