EE data-only SIM guide
EE Data Only SIM Deals: Tablets, iPads and Routers
Quick answer: Yes. EE sells dedicated Pay Monthly Data SIMs for eligible tablets, laptops and mobile Wi-Fi equipment. These are different from EE's regular phone SIM-only contracts. But a specialist data SIM isn't always the cheapest sensible choice: 1pMobile confirms that its ordinary SIM can be used in a tablet, and its mobile service runs on EE's UK network. If you have a suitable cellular tablet, compare 1pMobile's current rolling SIMs as an alternative, not as EE-branded data-only products.
The decision in three checks:
- Want EE itself as the provider? Start with EE's actual Data SIM range, not the EE phone SIM-only listings.
- Own a cellular tablet and want flexibility? Compare the compatible ordinary SIM options in our EE-network deals. The hardware, physical SIM or eSIM activation and tariff must all be suitable.
- Own a Wi-Fi-only tablet? It cannot take a SIM directly. Use an existing phone hotspot or a separate portable Wi-Fi device instead.
One costly distinction matters before you buy: a fixed-data 1pMobile Boost can charge 1p per MB for extra UK data, approximately £10 per GB. A slightly larger allowance can be a better deal than a small plan with an unexpected overage.
Does EE actually sell data-only SIM deals?
Yes. EE has a dedicated consumer range of Pay Monthly Data SIMs, advertised for tablets, compatible laptops, dongles and mobile Wi-Fi devices. It sits apart from EE's pay-monthly phone SIM-only shop, which sells data alongside calls and texts.
EE's Data SIM shop has distinguished one-month Unlimited tiers from 24-month contracts with smaller fixed allowances and Unlimited choices. The shorter products have included No Frills, Essentials and Essentials Plus variants; longer products have included 5GB, 25GB and Unlimited tiers. These describe the range observed during our review, not a permanent promise of those exact packages. The real choice is between flexibility, enough data and the full price you will pay; differences in included roaming, speed-related features and data gifting can also change the value. EE separately sells mobile broadband devices and tablet-with-plan packages, which are not the same purchase as a SIM for equipment you already own.
| What you see | What it is | A dedicated EE data SIM? | Main thing to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| EE Pay Monthly Data SIM | Data service for eligible connected devices | Yes | Term, device, speed, allowance, roaming |
| EE phone SIM-only | Regular EE contract with calls, texts and data | No | Phone tariff, term, speed tier, device compatibility |
| EE mobile broadband / MiFi | Data connection with a separate Wi-Fi device, sometimes bundled | Depends on the package | Hardware charges and intended use |
| EE tablet + data plan | Tablet hardware bundled with a data agreement | Not a SIM-only purchase | Device financing, minimum term, total cost |
| 1pMobile SIM on EE coverage | Another provider's ordinary voice-and-data SIM | No | A lower-cost, flexible alternative where your equipment works |
EE's published Data SIM range is the official product source. Compare it with our EE-network alternatives. EE is not a DealPriceCheck affiliate, and we don't show a live EE Data SIM checkout feed. Our EE provider page lists ordinary SIM-only tariffs, so nobody mistakes a phone plan for the specialist product they searched for.
Should you choose EE's one-month or 24-month Data SIM?
If you only need temporary internet, compare the current one-month Data SIM first. If your tablet uses a predictable, modest amount of data for years, check whether a longer fixed-allowance plan is better value over its entire term. If the SIM will serve several devices every day, look at the named Unlimited tier and its speed, roaming and usage rules rather than assuming the word "Unlimited" settles the decision.
A short plan helps if you're waiting for fibre, using a mobile router for a few weeks or running a tablet on a temporary project. The flexibility may cost more each month. EE's one-month Data SIM selection has focused on Unlimited tiers, while its longer range also included fixed allowances, though that split can change. A one-month plan isn't automatically prepaid or no-credit-check, so read the agreement and cancellation process.
A 24-month Data SIM may suit someone who will use the same tablet or router for years and has confirmed indoor signal and hardware support. The risk is choosing it after a quick outdoor speed test, then finding the connection unreliable in the home office, or the tablet is the wrong model. Compare the full scheduled minimum-term cost, including known price rises, not the starting monthly figure. Where EE publishes future pound-amount increases, include them in that calculation rather than treating the opening payment as the price for all 24 months.
EE may list 5G+ or other network features on its Data SIM cards. Its higher-named tiers can also include extras such as EU roaming that are not necessarily included in every Data SIM. That doesn't promise uncapped speeds on every tier, or that your hardware supports them. Check the named Data SIM's maximum speed and eligibility at checkout, and don't carry a speed figure over from an EE phone SIM with a similar name. Fair-use figures published for EE phone SIM-only or for a separate mobile-broadband product don't automatically apply to an EE Data SIM, so read the terms for the actual data product.
Is EE data-only better than an ordinary SIM on EE's network?
Not necessarily. An ordinary SIM-only plan includes minutes and texts a tablet never uses, but it can still cost less than a dedicated data plan. What matters is whether the plan is permitted and technically compatible with your device, not whether its name says "data-only".
For a cellular tablet, 1pMobile's pre-sales FAQ answers the question directly. It doesn't sell a dedicated data-only tablet SIM, but says a normal 1pMobile SIM can be used in a tablet. That is better evidence than assuming compatibility because 1pMobile uses EE's network.
| Factor | EE-branded Data SIM | 1pMobile ordinary SIM | Other ordinary EE-network SIMs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Provider | EE | 1pMobile | Operators such as Lyca or spusu |
| Host network | EE | EE | EE |
| Product type | Dedicated data product | Voice, text and data bundle | Usually voice, text and data |
| Tablet-use evidence | Sold for eligible connected devices | Confirmed in 1pMobile's FAQ | Confirm for the product and device |
| Format | Data SIM, or separate device bundles | SIM-only | Usually SIM-only |
| Terms | EE product-specific | Rolling 30-day Boosts and other formats | Provider-specific |
| eSIM for your tablet | Check the exact Data SIM and tablet | eSIM ordering exists, but tablet activation needs confirming | Don't assume a phone eSIM route works on an iPad |
| Best reason to choose | Purpose-built product and EE retail support | Flexible option for a compatible tablet | Different price, allowance or terms |
EE and 1pMobile share EE's radio coverage, but an EE MVNO isn't an EE retail contract. Speeds, extra network features, billing, support and service restrictions can differ.
Where can you compare the tariffs?
Start with 1pMobile's current EE-network plans. For a light-use tablet, the 5GB Boost is a useful comparison point; for frequent streaming or portable hotspot use, examine the 200GB Boost. Both are ordinary voice-and-data SIMs. The allowance-by-use table below links to the other named 1pMobile deal pages, so you can choose according to your measured use rather than from an arbitrary ranking. Where applicable, use the existing View Deal button on the individual offer page.
You can also compare Lyca Mobile's selected EE-network deals and the wider EE-network catalogue. Lyca can make sense on price or for eSIM phones, but we haven't verified a tablet activation route for every Lyca tariff or iPad model. Don't buy an eSIM for your iPad just because a deal card says "eSIM".
What is the best EE-network SIM for an iPad or Android tablet?
A dedicated EE Data SIM is a straightforward choice for an eligible Wi-Fi + Cellular tablet, and an ordinary 1pMobile SIM can be another reasonable one. Neither will add mobile internet to a tablet without a cellular modem.
| Your tablet | What to check | Starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi-only iPad or Android tablet | No built-in mobile modem | A phone hotspot or MiFi, not a tablet SIM |
| Cellular tablet with a nano-SIM tray | Network lock, SIM size, supported 4G/5G bands, plan eligibility | EE Data SIM or a tablet-permitted 1pMobile physical SIM |
| Cellular iPad that is eSIM-only | Exact iPad model and the provider's tablet eSIM support | An EE data-SIM eSIM, if offered for that product and device; verify first |
| Android tablet with eSIM | Exact model, profile provisioning, network support | Only a product whose operator supports activation on that model |
| Tablet mostly on home Wi-Fi | How much mobile data you really need | Existing phone hotspot or a small rolling allowance |
| Tablet used independently every weekday | Coverage, renewal cost, GB used off Wi-Fi | A separate cellular SIM; compare EE Data SIM with eligible phone-SIM alternatives |
Many recent cellular iPads have no physical SIM tray. Certain iPad Pro and iPad Air generations and the iPad (A16) are eSIM-only. Apple's iPad model identification guide lists the hardware, and its iPad eSIM setup guide explains activation. If your iPad is eSIM-only, a cheap plastic SIM that works in an older tablet won't help.
For a physical-SIM tablet, check whether it's locked to a previous operator and whether the service needs an account SMS or activation app. For an eSIM tablet, ask the provider whether its new-customer plan can be installed on that iPad, not just whether eSIM is available for iPhones. Sharing a network doesn't mean sharing a provisioning process.
If you're choosing a physical-SIM tablet plan, begin with the 1pMobile rolling options. If your tablet is eSIM-only, confirm that the operator can issue and activate a new-customer eSIM on that specific iPad model before paying. Don't use an ordinary SIM's deal-card eSIM label as proof of iPad eligibility.
Can an EE Data SIM work in a 4G or 5G router?
EE markets its Data SIM range for connected devices and mobile Wi-Fi. A suitable 4G or 5G router or portable MiFi can take a compatible data plan and create a Wi-Fi network for laptops, tablets and other equipment. The router also needs good indoor reception, the right frequency bands, working SIM activation and usually the right APN settings.
An ordinary phone SIM can also work in many routers when technically compatible. UK open-internet rules protect consumers' choice of terminal equipment; Ofcom has previously raised concerns about blanket restrictions on using mobile SIMs in routers or tethering. That does not certify a particular 1pMobile Boost for your router, guarantee support or remove legitimate, transparent network management. See Ofcom's net neutrality guidance.
1pMobile's FAQ confirms tablet use, but it doesn't give a device-by-device list covering every home router. A tablet statement doesn't mean every router or always-on household setup has been tested and supported.
What should you check before a 24-month router agreement?
- Router model. Is it 4G-only or 5G-capable? An "EE 5G Data SIM" won't upgrade a 4G-only router.
- Network bands. Does it support the LTE and 5G bands used where you'll install it? An unlocked router can still have limited UK band support.
- Network lock and APN. Can it use the chosen provider, and is there a documented configuration for that device?
- SIM format. Does it have a nano-SIM tray, another slot type or supported eSIM provisioning?
- Signal where it will live. Test beside the actual window, desk or upstairs position. Outdoor phone reception isn't enough.
- Busy-time behaviour. Try evening downloads, calls and streaming, because a fast morning speed test can mislead.
- Terms and support. Check speeds, fair use, any account-SMS requirement and whether the provider can help with your router.
If the router is your home's only connection, reliability and device support may justify a dedicated data or mobile-broadband product. For a router used to run a business, verify that the agreement permits your intended commercial use rather than relying on a consumer tablet-use FAQ. If it's a backup for the odd fibre outage, a flexible ordinary SIM or your phone's hotspot may cost less.
Which EE data plan suits a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot or temporary home broadband?
For a portable MiFi, work out how much data everyone sharing it will use and whether you need it for two weeks, several months or every day. EE's shorter Data SIM options deserve a look for temporary service. If you're supplying a whole household, compare Unlimited against realistic usage and any personal-use conditions, and don't assume "Unlimited" promises unlimited speed.
| Use case | Sensible first route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Internet while waiting for fibre | Short EE Data SIM or an eligible rolling EE-network plan | Avoids a long contract after fixed broadband arrives |
| Commuting tablet or laptop | A modest allowance, not automatically Unlimited | Office and home Wi-Fi may cover most use |
| MiFi for two or three travelling devices | An allowance sized for the trip | Everyone shares one pool of data |
| Fixed home backup router | A flexible plan or an existing phone hotspot | Avoid paying for a large allowance when the backup is rarely used |
| Full-time household router | High-data or Unlimited with proven busy-hour reception | Heavy use makes signal, speed policy and support matter more than a low headline rate |
| Wi-Fi-only tablet on holiday | Your phone's hotspot, then a MiFi if needed | A SIM for the tablet itself achieves nothing |
Your phone's hotspot is often the cheapest option. If your plan has spare data and allows tethering, the extra subscription cost may be £0. The downsides are battery drain, keeping the phone nearby and sharing its allowance. Our hotspot and tethering guide covers the wider trade-offs.
What about business-grade EE data SIMs?
EE also markets Business Data SIMs for eligible business customers, with different products, contract options, VAT presentation and terms. Don't compare a price shown excluding VAT on a business page with a VAT-inclusive consumer price. This guide covers consumer buying decisions, not enterprise connectivity.
Does a 1pMobile SIM save money for EE tablet coverage?
It can, especially if you already own an unlocked cellular tablet and want a flexible data allowance. Compare the price of enough usable data on reliable EE coverage, and ignore the unused phone minutes included with 1pMobile.
1pMobile's 30-day Boosts are ordinary UK mobile bundles with calls and texts. Its official statement on tablet use makes them a real alternative to EE's specialist Data SIM range, provided your tablet supports the SIM format and the service activates properly.
| Typical need | Buying question | DealPriceCheck starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Light browsing away from Wi-Fi | Is a small allowance enough? | 1pMobile 5GB or 10GB |
| Regular tablet work and video calls | Would a mid-sized Boost cover the busiest 30 days? | 1pMobile 50GB or 75GB |
| Frequent streaming and portable hotspot sessions | Can you stay below a high fixed allowance? | 1pMobile 100GB or 150GB |
| Multiple devices and larger downloads | Will 200GB keep you clear of excess-data charges? | 1pMobile 200GB |
| Consistently heavy personal use | Would Unlimited fit, and what fair-use terms apply? | 1pMobile Unlimited |
Important for Unlimited: 1pMobile's published personal-use policy refers to possible speed management at busy locations when usage exceeds 500GB in a Boost period. That is not a hard 500GB data cut-off. This is particularly relevant if you plan to run a household router continuously, and the product has not been certified for your exact router model.
These are ordinary voice-and-data SIMs, not EE Data SIMs and not certified for every tablet, laptop or router. The linked product pages provide existing View Deal purchase buttons for eligible partner offers. Read the plan details and make sure the SIM suits your device before continuing. Also compare the current 1pMobile provider listing, because the right bundle depends on device support, renewal cost, excess-data rules and your usage, not on the biggest allowance.
What happens if your tablet goes over its allowance?
On a fixed-data Boost, the limit isn't a harmless soft cap. 1pMobile's product information describes charges outside the included allowance, including 1p per MB of excess UK data under applicable terms. That's £10 per 1,000MB (or £10.24 per 1,024MB), before any other applicable charges. A tablet that downloads a big operating-system update over mobile data can use up a small allowance quickly. For example, if you expect 6GB of UK data per 30 days, the last 1GB on a 5GB Boost could cost roughly £10 at that excess rate. Compare the 10GB Boost before ordering the smaller plan; this illustrates possible overage, not a live tariff price comparison.
Watch the credit balance, not just the data bar. The official 1pMobile 200GB product page describes a £10 automatic usage-balance top-up charged to the saved payment method when the balance falls below £2. Its general help, meanwhile, describes an optional, configurable auto top-up. Because those explanations differ in scope, examine the actual Boost's checkout wording and your account's top-up settings before relying on either one. Don't assume extra data is free or that the device will simply disconnect.
EE's dedicated Data SIM page, by contrast, advertises a Stay Connected feature at reduced speeds after an eligible finite allowance runs out. Confirm its availability and reduced-speed terms on the particular EE Data SIM you choose; don't assume it applies identically to every EE product. A plan that slows down after its allowance and one that charges for extra data produce very different bills, so compare that behaviour before you compare monthly prices.
If usage varies, allow a little headroom rather than buying exactly your average amount. The relevant comparison is the extra cost of the next bundle versus the possible overage on the smaller one. For a consistently large allowance, see 200GB SIM-only options and unlimited EE-network options, keeping in mind those pages mainly cover phone tariffs.
Is an EE eSIM data plan available for iPads and laptops?
An eSIM is a digital way of installing a mobile service, not a special data-only allowance. EE supports eSIM on eligible services and devices, but you need to confirm that the specific Data SIM you're buying can be installed on your iPad or laptop. An eSIM promise for iPhones doesn't prove that a separate data-only product will activate on a tablet.
Newer cellular iPads can be eSIM-only, some older ones take nano-SIMs, and a Wi-Fi-only model uses neither. Use Apple's iPad hardware list and iPad eSIM setup instructions and don't judge by the device's appearance.
1pMobile has an eSIM ordering route for new customers, but our individual Boost cards haven't consistently certified eSIM at product level. For an eSIM-only iPad, treat a 1pMobile card as a candidate to confirm, and ask the operator whether it supports your iPad model and account type before you pay.
A Windows laptop may have a physical SIM tray, eSIM or a cellular modem, but many have only Wi-Fi. If there's no cellular modem, an eSIM QR code won't create one, so use a compatible MiFi or your phone's hotspot. Our guide to UK eSIM network availability covers the wider picture, but it can't replace checking EE Data SIM eligibility.
How much data does a tablet or 5G router need?
Don't choose 100GB because the tablet has a big screen, or Unlimited because the router says "5G". Measure the mobile traffic you expect away from Wi-Fi.
| Device behaviour | Starting approach | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Email, maps and reading on occasional journeys | Your phone's hotspot or a small Boost | Automatic photo backup and app updates |
| Regular video meetings on a cellular tablet | Check actual monthly use, then add headroom | Meeting quality, uplink signal, hours per week |
| HD streaming on train journeys | Compare medium and large allowances | Streaming quality, offline downloads, dropped connections |
| Gaming from a hotspot | Prioritise latency and coverage, then enough data | Large game downloads and patches |
| Router for two people working from home | Trial indoor performance and a larger allowance | Cloud sync, updates, simultaneous calls |
| Router replacing household broadband | Compare high-data or Unlimited with specialised mobile broadband | Evening congestion, speed management, sustained-use terms |
A tablet averaging 6GB per 30 days usually doesn't need a 150GB bundle just to be safe. Conversely, a home router regularly moving 180GB needs a high-data option, not a tiny tablet allowance that risks top-ups or slowdowns. Real measured use should set the allowance, not a permanent "best data SIM" ranking. You can check recent usage in your tablet's mobile-data settings, but note that device counters may not reset on the same date as your provider's billing cycle. For a MiFi or home router, use its traffic statistics or your existing operator's usage history, then allow headroom for updates and multiple connected devices.
If you already have an EE phone SIM and can share its data through a hotspot or an eligible data-gifting arrangement, consider that before you sign up for a separate bill. A 1pMobile or Lyca account doesn't automatically join EE's own data-gifting features just because they use EE's network.
What does a data SIM really cost over 30 days, a year or 24 months?
Three plans can all look affordable and cost very different amounts: a rolling bundle renewed every 30 days, a pay-monthly EE Data SIM billed by calendar month and a longer contract with scheduled price rises. Fix the dates you need internet, then total the payments that cover them.
This hypothetical example isn't EE's or 1pMobile's current pricing:
| Cost scenario | Hypothetical rolling 30-day SIM | Hypothetical 24-month data contract |
|---|---|---|
| Periodic price | £12 per 30 days | £15 a month for 6 months, then £20 a month for 18 months |
| First 12 payments | £144, covering 360 days | £210, covering the first 12 calendar months |
| Continuous cover for 365 days | A 13th renewal is needed: £156 spent, covering 390 days | The 12 calendar-month payments covering your dates |
| Full 24-month minimum | No 24-month minimum, with renewals if you stay | £450, before unspecified changes or extras |
| Leaving early | Stop future renewals under the provider's terms | Contract-ending charges may apply |
This isn't a like-for-like quote. It shows how billing periods mislead: 12 × 30 days = 360 days, not a year. The hypothetical 24-month agreement costs 6 × £15 + 18 × £20 = £450. A plan described as "no annual increase" can still step up after an introductory discount. EE's own Data SIM cards show dated pound-amount increases on eligible longer contracts; calculate your actual total from the named offer's published payment schedule, not this illustration. Don't guess unknown future charges.
Add the cost of any MiFi or router, hardware financing, upfront fees, roaming, extra data, add-ons and contract liability. A cheap SIM in a router you still have to buy can cost more than sharing your existing mobile data. A dedicated data plan with clear equipment support may be worth a premium if it keeps work running.
How do EE coverage, 4G, 5G and speed tiers affect the choice?
EE-branded Data SIMs, 1pMobile, Lyca and other EE-based providers can share EE's radio infrastructure, but they don't automatically get identical maximum speeds, 5G access, account services or conditions. "5G" is a network technology, not a guaranteed download rate.
Check your home, campus or workplace postcode on Ofcom's Map Your Mobile, which separates predicted indoor and outdoor 4G and 5G coverage and gives broader area performance measures. For mobile broadband, a test inside the room where the router will sit tells you more than a coverage screenshot. Thick walls, the router's antenna, congestion and placement all change the result.
Common mistakes:
- Buying an uncapped-speed tier for a device whose modem can't reach those speeds.
- Trusting a strong 5G signal outside the property without testing where the router will go.
- Assuming every MVNO on EE gets every EE-branded premium network feature.
- Reading "unlimited data" as a promise of unrestricted speed or unlimited roaming.
- Signing a long contract after one speed test at a quiet hour.
If EE reception is poor where you need internet, don't buy an EE-hosted SIM because your search had "EE" in it. Our general data-only tablet and router guide covers other host networks. This page helps when EE already suits you, or you deliberately want EE's retail Data SIM service.
Does an EE Data SIM include calls, texts or roaming?
A dedicated data-only SIM is designed for internet access, so don't assume it includes ordinary voice minutes and texts. You may still get an account number or need a service SMS to register. A normal 1pMobile Boost includes standard UK calls and texts with data, even if your tablet has no calling interface.
Roaming needs a separate check. EE Data SIM roaming depends on the named tariff and any add-ons, while 1pMobile's Boosts have their own EU roaming cap. On 1pMobile, the maximum included EU data on applicable larger Boosts is 14GB, and a 5GB UK allowance doesn't turn into 14GB abroad. Your UK data, the separate roaming cap, destination eligibility and out-of-bundle charges all matter.
A tablet taken through France or Spain can behave differently from one used only in England, and a travel router may switch networks across borders. For long EU trips, check destinations, roaming quota, any fair-use period and whether the device can receive security messages. See our EU roaming guide. Don't carry EE's roaming conditions over to a 1pMobile or Lyca product because all use EE in the UK.
What should you check before clicking View Deal?
Check these before you buy. It takes less effort than cancelling the wrong SIM or paying for excess data.
- Confirm the hardware. Is it a cellular tablet, an eSIM-only iPad, an LTE laptop or a compatible 4G or 5G router?
- Confirm the product category. EE's Data SIM, EE's phone SIM-only and a 1pMobile phone SIM are different products.
- Check EE signal indoors. Use Ofcom and a local trial where you can.
- Ask about your exact device. Check activation, SIM or eSIM provisioning, router bands, APN and support before you buy.
- Know what happens when the allowance ends. Does the connection slow, stop or charge your balance?
- Read the full payment schedule. Include renewal timing, step-ups, minimum term and equipment costs.
- Use the right purchase route. On DealPriceCheck, use the View Deal button on the partner's live listing or a verified partner product page. We haven't certified any product for every tablet model.
For an EE-branded Data SIM, use the EE product reference near the start of this guide: the EE phone SIM listings are not the same thing. For a compatible tablet on EE's network, follow the relevant 1pMobile allowance and partner purchase routes above, then inspect the named plan before using View Deal.
EE data-only SIM: frequently asked questions
Is an EE Data SIM the same as a SIM that uses EE's network?
No. An EE Data SIM is sold by EE as a dedicated data product. A 1pMobile, Lyca or spusu SIM may use EE's radio network while remaining a contract or bundle from that other provider. The available speeds, customer support, eSIM activation, roaming and equipment eligibility can differ. This matters most when buying for a tablet or router rather than a phone.
Does EE have a data-only SIM for iPads and tablets?
Yes. EE's consumer Data SIM range is promoted for tablets and other connected devices. Check the product, term and SIM or eSIM compatibility of your iPad before you order. It is separate from EE's ordinary phone SIM-only plans.
Can I buy an EE Data SIM without buying a new tablet?
Yes. EE publishes a standalone pay-monthly Data SIM range as well as separate tablet and device bundles. Choose the Data SIM category if you already own a compatible device, or you may end up comparing a hardware contract with a SIM-only payment.
Does EE offer a 30-day data-only SIM?
EE's consumer Data SIM shop includes shorter one-month options, though allowances and tiers can differ from longer contracts. A one-month bill period and a 30-day prepaid bundle are not the same thing. Read the current joining, credit and cancellation conditions, because a one-month pay-monthly plan isn't automatically prepaid.
Does EE offer Unlimited data-only SIMs?
Yes, EE has published Unlimited Data SIM options. Unlimited domestic GB doesn't mean unlimited maximum speed, roaming or freedom from fair-use conditions, so check the named product and your hardware.
Is 1pMobile a genuine data-only SIM provider?
No. 1pMobile says it doesn't have a dedicated tablet data-only SIM, but its ordinary SIM can be used in a tablet. That makes it an alternative for a compatible device, not an EE-branded data SIM or a specialist data-only product.
Can I use a 1pMobile SIM in an iPad?
It may suit an eligible cellular iPad. 1pMobile confirms ordinary tablet use, but your iPad may need an eSIM and not a physical SIM, and the operator must support provisioning on that model. Check hardware and activation before you pick a tariff.
Can a Wi-Fi-only iPad use an EE SIM?
Not directly. A Wi-Fi-only iPad has no cellular modem, so use a phone hotspot or a suitable MiFi instead. A SIM or eSIM QR code can't add cellular hardware to the tablet.
Can I put an EE Data SIM in a 5G router?
A compatible EE Data SIM can be used in eligible connected equipment, including mobile Wi-Fi hardware. Confirm the router's lock status, bands, SIM or eSIM format and APN. EE's mobile-broadband products may include equipment that a standalone SIM doesn't.
Can I put an ordinary EE-network phone SIM in a router?
Often, if the connection is technically compatible. Ofcom's open-internet rules protect the use of your chosen terminal equipment, and blanket router bans are generally problematic. That doesn't guarantee working APN settings, coverage or a particular speed, and fair-use conditions still apply.
Is an EE Data SIM cheaper than a 1pMobile SIM?
Not necessarily. Compare the named EE data plan with a suitable 1pMobile phone SIM on total cost, usable allowance, device activation and renewal rules. A dedicated data plan can bring device-focused support, while an ordinary tablet-compatible SIM may cost less even with unused minutes and texts.
Does a 5G Data SIM automatically give my tablet 5G?
No. The tablet or router needs 5G hardware, supported bands, a compatible product and usable 5G coverage. A 4G-only tablet stays 4G even on a package branded 5G.
What happens if a 1pMobile tablet uses more than its Boost data?
Excess-data charges may apply at the published rate, including 1p per MB under relevant terms, and top-up settings can affect later charges. Check the named product's out-of-bundle rules and your account settings, and don't assume the device simply stops.
Can I use an EE Data SIM in Europe?
Roaming depends on the exact EE data tariff and destination. A normal 1pMobile Boost has different roaming rules, and a large UK allowance doesn't give you an equally large EU allowance. Confirm the charges and limits for your named plan before you travel.
Verdict: which EE data-only option should you buy?
Choose EE's dedicated Data SIM if you specifically want an EE retail product for a compatible tablet, laptop or connected device, and its support and terms justify the full cost. Match the commitment to the time you need the connection.
Choose a compatible 1pMobile ordinary SIM if you already have an unlocked cellular tablet, prefer a rolling EE-network allowance and don't need a dedicated data-only product. Its tablet-use guidance makes it a credible alternative, and our 1pMobile offers show the available allowances and buying routes. For heavier use, the 1pMobile 200GB plan is one concrete EE-network comparison, provided the device and excess-use rules fit.
Choose neither if your phone's hotspot already covers the need, the tablet is Wi-Fi-only or EE reception is unreliable where the connection matters. Paying for the wrong connection is no saving.
DealPriceCheck compares selected UK SIM-only deals and may earn commission from eligible partner purchases. Its phone-SIM catalogue is not a certified EE Data SIM or router-compatibility list. Prices, plan features and equipment eligibility can change. Check the selected product and the final checkout terms before ordering.
