Data-only SIM guide

O2 Data Only SIM Deals UK: Tablets, MiFi and Routers

Quick answer: O2 offers Pay Monthly Mobile Broadband / Data Only services for eligible connected devices, including mobile routers. But its old Pay As You Go Mobile Broadband and iPad data-SIM service closed on 31 January 2025. An ordinary O2 Pay As You Go phone SIM is a different product, not the return of that discontinued service. O2's published consumer Pay Monthly terms also say that data on its Data Only / Mobile Broadband tariffs can be used only in the UK. If you need independent internet on a compatible tablet, an ordinary voice-and-data SIM may be better value, provided the plan and activation method support your device.

That makes the buying decision more specific than simply finding the cheapest SIM labelled data only. You need to establish which O2 service actually exists, whether it works in your tablet or router, what it costs over the period you'll use it and whether another provider could serve the same purpose.

Compare a compatible alternative: View Sky Mobile SIM-only plans on DealPriceCheck if O2-network coverage matters and you have an eligible unlocked tablet. Sky uses O2's network, but its regular SIM plans are not O2 Data Only products. See Full plan details and the existing partner View Deal links before choosing.

Does O2 still sell data-only SIMs in the UK?

Yes, through its Pay Monthly mobile broadband range, but not through the old specialist PAYG data-SIM service. O2's current mobile broadband product information describes connections for portable routers and dongles, including compatible data SIMs. Its ordinary phone SIM-only and Pay As You Go products are separate categories.

The distinction matters because you may encounter old prepaid O2 data-SIM listings or pages that have not been updated since the previous service was retired.

What happened to the O2 prepaid data-only SIM?

O2 withdrew the old Pay As You Go Mobile Broadband and iPad SIM range from new sales in 2024 and notified customers that the service would end on 31 January 2025. That closure is documented in ISPreview's report of O2's customer notice. O2's former management portal has also reported that this service is no longer available.

Do not mistake a physical SIM advertised as “preloaded O2 data” for a currently supported specialist O2 PAYG Mobile Broadband service. Seller stock, product branding and an old allowance printed on a package are not proof that a retired service can be activated.

O2 separately markets ordinary phone PAYG packages, including Big Bundles and Rolling Plans. Those include calls and texts with data and have their own renewal arrangements. They are not the discontinued data-only product. See O2's explanation of its current PAYG plan types for that distinction, not as a dedicated data-SIM purchase link.

O2 data-only or an ordinary SIM-only plan: which is better value?

An ordinary, compatible SIM-only plan may cost less. Data-only does not mean cheaper: a specialist product may be marketed with router support or supplied alongside equipment, while a standard plan can include calls and texts you never use without necessarily costing more.

To compare the options fairly, check four things together:

  1. Usable data: the allowance you can actually use on the intended device, including any speed or fair-use conditions.
  2. Total cost: monthly airtime charges over the minimum commitment, scheduled increases, setup charges and any separate router or tablet payments.
  3. Device support: physical SIM or eSIM activation, supported network technology and whether the provider recognises the intended use.
  4. Flexibility: minimum term, cancellation rules, how data renews and whether you will be paying when the equipment is unused.

If you only use a tablet away from Wi-Fi occasionally, a mobile hotspot from your existing phone may cost nothing extra. If you use a standalone router every day, predictable capacity and service reliability may justify paying more for a suitable mobile broadband product.

How do O2's annual price rises affect data-only costs?

O2 distinguishes data-only airtime from voice airtime. In its published April 2027 schedule, the monthly airtime increase is 75p for data-only and smartwatch plans, versus £2.50 for voice plans. These are dated figures for the stated pricing arrangements, not a promise that every current or historic contract has the same increase or that future schedules will never change.

The cost of an associated financed device may be shown separately from airtime. Check the fixed increases and the split between device and service in the contract information applicable to your purchase. O2 sets out the published schedule on its annual pricing information page.

When comparing a 30-day, 12-month or 24-month option, calculate the total for the period you expect to keep it. Do not compare one plan's first bill with another plan's full contract cost.

Can you use an O2 data-only SIM in an iPad or Android tablet?

Yes, with a suitable plan and a cellular-capable tablet. A Wi-Fi-only iPad or Android tablet has no built-in mobile modem, so inserting or purchasing a data SIM cannot give it its own mobile connection. It can still get online through a phone hotspot or a separate MiFi router.

For a cellular tablet, verify the exact model and how it activates a plan:

TabletWhat matters before you pay
Wi-Fi-only iPad or Android tabletUse Wi-Fi from a phone or mobile router; a SIM cannot be installed to add cellular service
Cellular iPad or Android tablet with SIM trayConfirm the correct physical SIM size, device unlock and that the chosen tariff permits activation on the tablet
eSIM-capable cellular tabletConfirm that the provider supports that specific plan on that specific tablet, not merely that the provider sells eSIMs for phones
eSIM-only iPadA physical O2 data SIM will not fit; use a compatible mobile-data eSIM with confirmed tablet activation

Apple states that several newer iPads, including iPad Pro (M4 and later), iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad mini (A17 Pro and later) and iPad (A16 and later) in their Wi-Fi + Cellular versions, activate with eSIM and have no physical SIM card slot. The Apple UK iPad eSIM guide lists affected models and activation methods.

Does O2 offer a data-only eSIM for iPad?

O2's support for eSIM on eligible products is not confirmation that every O2 Data Only / Mobile Broadband offer can activate on every iPad. Before ordering a specialist tariff, establish whether O2 supports it on your model, how the eSIM is issued and whether it requires a particular tablet or account arrangement.

The same check applies to ordinary SIM-only alternatives. A provider saying “our SIM works in tablets” does not automatically guarantee that an eSIM-only iPad is eligible for every activation route.

A relevant O2-network alternative: Sky Mobile

Sky Mobile uses O2's underlying mobile network. Importantly, Sky's official SIM-only guidance says a Sky SIM can be used in an unlocked compatible tablet. This provides a documented alternative if your real requirement is connected-tablet data on O2-network coverage, rather than an O2-branded Mobile Broadband contract.

Sky's SIM-only plans include calls and texts. Eligible non-unlimited plans also offer Sky Piggybank, which saves unused data according to Sky's rules; the feature does not roll over unused data from an unlimited plan. Piggybank data has its own expiry and redemption conditions, so do not treat it as a permanent unlimited bank.

Buying route: Compare current Sky Mobile plans on DealPriceCheck. Check the data allowance, minimum commitment, Full plan details and supported SIM/eSIM activation before using the partner View Deal button. Sky's tablet guidance does not prove support for every 4G/5G router.

Can an O2 data-only SIM work in a 4G or 5G router?

O2 sells mobile broadband products for connected equipment, but any particular SIM-and-router combination still needs checking. The presence of a 5G logo does not make an otherwise incompatible router work, and actual 5G availability depends on location.

For an unlocked router of your own, check:

An ordinary SIM marketed for phones is not automatically technically unsuitable for a router. But the right to choose equipment does not remove the need to check compatibility, data allowances, lawful service conditions and the actual support offered by the provider.

Is O2 mobile broadband suitable as home internet?

It can be, especially in temporary accommodation, a holiday property or where fixed-line installation is delayed. For a permanent connection, test indoor coverage at the intended router position and at busy times, not simply the outdoor signal forecast.

A steady connection for video calls or shared household streaming is more important than a brief maximum speed test. For remote CCTV, also check power reliability and whether you can reach the equipment from outside the mobile network.

If you only need emergency backup, first calculate whether using your current phone as a hotspot is sufficient. Our guide to UK SIM plans for tethering and hotspots explains the practical difference between sharing phone data and placing a SIM directly in a router.

Can you use an O2 Data Only or Mobile Broadband SIM abroad?

Do not rely on O2 phone-plan EU-roaming benefits for a dedicated data-only product. O2's published consumer Pay Monthly tariff terms expressly state that data on Data Only / Mobile Broadband tariffs can be used only in the UK. The roaming rights of eligible O2 voice-and-data phone plans are separate.

The distinction is especially important when buying for an iPad you will take overseas. An O2 phone tariff, a specialist O2 Mobile Broadband plan and an international travel eSIM are three different products with potentially different coverage, country eligibility and activation rules.

Read the restriction in O2's official consumer Pay Monthly tariff terms. For a trip abroad, confirm the specific service and destination before purchase rather than importing the roaming allowance from a different tariff.

What if you want occasional data but O2's old PAYG data-only SIM is gone?

The old O2 PAYG Mobile Broadband service is not a current purchasing option. The remaining decisions depend on where the data is needed and which device will use it.

A different network alternative: 1pMobile on EE

1pMobile uses EE's mobile network. In its official pre-sales help, 1pMobile says it does not sell a dedicated data-only tablet SIM but confirms that an ordinary 1pMobile SIM can be used in a tablet.

That makes it relevant for a compatible cellular tablet when EE coverage is preferable. However, 1pMobile's ordinary SIM options, rolling data bundles and pay-as-you-go arrangements have different renewal rules. Its published minimum-spend requirement can also apply depending on the service or commitment period, so check the exact plan before choosing.

Buying route: Compare 1pMobile SIM-only offers on DealPriceCheck. Inspect Full plan details and use the verified Awin View Deal route for a suitable offer. A tablet-use confirmation is not a universal approval for every router or eSIM-only iPad.

Which provider makes sense for your device? O2 vs Sky Mobile vs 1pMobile

This is a comparison of suitable starting points, not a claim that all three sell equivalent specialist O2 data-only SIMs.

If you insist on a specialist O2 data-only product: verify that service's currently available terms and device compatibility. DealPriceCheck does not presently list a verified dedicated O2 Mobile Broadband affiliate card, so an ordinary O2 phone SIM-only card should not be presented as the same product.

If you want the O2 network but do not need a specialist tariff: Sky is a more useful partner comparison route for compatible unlocked tablets. If you need to switch underlying coverage: 1pMobile on EE offers a genuinely different reception option.

For network-neutral criteria on mobile routers, read our data-only SIM guide for UK tablets and routers. For ordinary O2 phone tariffs, our O2 SIM-only comparison is a separate informational route, not a specialist data-only catalogue or a confirmed affiliate checkout.

How much mobile data should you buy for a tablet or MiFi?

The right allowance depends on actual data sent over the mobile network, not the amount your tablet uses when connected to home Wi-Fi.

Usage situationWhat to prioritise
Occasional emails, browsing or maps on a tabletA modest allowance or phone hotspot rather than unnecessary monthly cost
Regular video calls, commuting and streamingEnough data for the busiest normal month, plus some headroom
Portable MiFi on weekends in the UKValidity, location-specific coverage, number of connected devices and overall cost
Router kept for outagesA plan that remains useful when needed, without excessive ongoing payments
Main connection for multiple household devicesSustained speed, a high allowance or eligible unlimited plan, contract cost and fair-use conditions

Cloud backups, automatic updates and high-definition streaming can change consumption sharply. Check the device's real usage record where possible before choosing a large bundle.

Our mobile data usage guide offers a more detailed way to estimate your requirements. If you are considering a very high allowance, you can also compare selected unlimited SIM-only deals, but those are ordinary phone SIM products, not a certified catalogue of router-compatible data-only tariffs. Check the individual offer's partner routing before purchasing.

How do you check O2 coverage for a tablet or router?

Start with the places that matter: the actual commute or worksite for a tablet, or the specific room and installation point for a router. Coverage claims at national level do not predict busy-hour indoor performance in a particular building.

Use the independent Ofcom broadband and mobile coverage checker to compare predicted networks by location, then test with compatible equipment when practical. Prediction maps do not guarantee the signal or speed you will actually get indoors.

Remember that Sky and O2 share the O2 underlying network. Choosing Sky may change pricing and features, but does not give you a completely independent alternative to O2 coverage. 1pMobile on EE is a different network to check.

O2 data-only SIM FAQs

Is O2's old Pay As You Go data-only SIM still available?

No, not as the former specialist PAYG Mobile Broadband/iPad service. O2 closed that product in January 2025. Ordinary O2 PAYG mobile phone SIMs continue as a different category; an old preloaded data-SIM listing is not proof that the retired service works.

Can I get an O2 data-only SIM on a 30-day plan?

O2 has marketed flexible Mobile Broadband contracts, but do not assume that every particular data-only tariff is available on a 30-day basis. Verify the current term attached to the exact product. A normal 30-day phone SIM is not automatically a dedicated data-only SIM.

Can I use an O2 data-only SIM in an unlocked 5G router?

Potentially, if the specific SIM/plan and router are compatible and the intended use is supported. Check the relevant UK bands, activation and network settings, as well as coverage. A 5G-capable router still may connect on 4G where that is the available service.

Does O2 data-only include phone calls or texts?

Treat a specialist data-only product as a mobile internet service, not as a normal phone-calling plan. If voice calls, SMS or a regular mobile number are essential, compare the relevant ordinary mobile tariff and its terms.

Can I put a physical data SIM in a new iPad?

Only if that exact iPad has a compatible SIM tray. Several newer Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads are eSIM-only; Wi-Fi-only iPads cannot connect directly to the mobile network at all.

Does O2 data-only have EU roaming?

O2's published consumer Pay Monthly Data Only / Mobile Broadband conditions say the inclusive data is for UK use only. Do not apply the EU roaming terms of an O2 phone plan to this different product.

Will Sky Mobile work in an iPad instead?

Sky explicitly permits its regular SIM in a compatible unlocked tablet. You must still check the exact iPad model, whether it uses a physical SIM or eSIM, and the activation method for the selected Sky plan.

Is Sky Mobile or 1pMobile better for a home router?

Neither provider's published permission to use an ordinary SIM in tablets is a guarantee that your specific router is supported. Compare device compatibility, coverage and total cost. For a supported tablet, Sky stays on O2 coverage while 1pMobile uses EE.

Which O2 data SIM should you choose?

Choose O2 Pay Monthly Mobile Broadband if you specifically need one of its supported specialist services, O2 reception is reliable at the intended location, the commitment suits you and UK-only data use meets your needs.

Choose a compatible ordinary SIM-only tariff if the goal is simply affordable mobile data on a cellular tablet. For O2-network coverage, compare Sky Mobile's available plans and use the partner `View Deal` attached to the offer you choose. If EE coverage is more promising, compare 1pMobile's plans through their existing tracked buying routes.

Choose your current phone's hotspot if you only need occasional internet for a Wi-Fi-only tablet and your phone allowance already covers it.

The decisive question is not what the SIM is called. It is whether the service exists, works in your exact device, covers the place you will use it and costs less over the period you need.

DealPriceCheck compares selected offers, not the whole market, and may earn commission from qualifying purchases through tracked partner links. Prices, availability and specific service conditions can change; always check the final plan and device terms before purchase.
