Which O2 SIM-only deal is best for your needs?

Choose O2 for a reason beyond the headline number of gigabytes. Its own-network plans can be appealing if you value inclusive European roaming, O2 Priority or eligible Virgin Media Volt benefits, but a 24-month plan with a low opening price is not necessarily better value than a shorter agreement, especially when annual price increases apply.

Three questions help you shortlist a deal:

  1. Will you use O2-specific benefits? Priority is available to eligible O2 customers, while Volt and enhanced roaming depend on your circumstances and tariff. Do not pay extra for perks you will never use.
  2. How long do you want to stay? A rolling 30-day agreement leaves room to change course, and a longer term has to earn its commitment through total cost or useful features.
  3. How much of your allowance can you actually use? A large UK data package does not become an equally large roaming allowance, and a tariff with the wrong coverage is poor value at any price.

Start with the Full plan details on each live offer above. The View Deal button then takes you to the recorded destination for that offer, where you can confirm the final conditions.

The real O2 SIM-only cost: how April price rises add up

O2's published pricing policy states that qualifying Pay Monthly voice airtime plans rise by £2.50 each April from April 2027. That makes the payment schedule particularly important when comparing a 12- or 24-month SIM-only commitment with a rolling option. O2 lists a different annual amount for data-only and smartwatch products; those are not ordinary phone SIM-only tariffs. Read the price-change terms for the specific contract rather than assuming every O2 offer follows the same schedule.

Here is a worked example, not an advertised O2 deal: a qualifying 24-month voice SIM-only contract starting at £20 per month in October 2026, with six payments before April 2027, twelve payments before April 2028 and six payments after that. The calculation assumes the currently published £2.50 annual increase also applies in April 2028. That is an explicit modelling assumption, not a guarantee of what O2 will charge every future customer.

Illustrative billing periodMonthly paymentPeriod cost
October 2026–March 2027: six payments£20.00£120.00
April 2027–March 2028: twelve payments£22.50£270.00
April–September 2028: six payments£25.00£150.00
Illustrative 24-month total£540.00

Simply multiplying £20 × 24 gives £480 — £60 less than the modelled £540 total. That example averages £22.50 per month, even though the starting price is £20. Your actual contract start date, promotional rates and documented increases determine the real total. A rolling plan has its own renewal and price-change terms; do not mechanically apply the same 24-month calculation.

For a shorter illustration, six payments of £10 followed by six of £12.50 add up to £135, rather than £120 if you multiply only the opening rate. Both examples are arithmetic scenarios under the published price-rise model, not promises about a particular live tariff. If the difference between O2 and another plan is small, calculate whether the included roaming or perks repay it.

O2 also says out-of-bundle charges rise by 5% each 1 April; these are separate from the fixed £2.50 core voice-airtime increase. O2 publishes the rules at O2 annual price changes. To compare flexible offers from several networks, use DealPriceCheck's 30-day SIM-only deals.

When should you choose a 30-day O2 plan instead?

A rolling plan is a sensible starting point if you are moving, testing O2 coverage, considering an eSIM as a second line or waiting for an existing contract to end. A longer term becomes easier to justify once you have confirmed local reception and calculated a real overall benefit, not just because the headline price is promotional.

A 30-day minimum term is not the same as pay as you go. A rolling Pay Monthly SIM is still an ongoing subscription, may need a credit check and has its own notice and cancellation rules, while traditional PAYG bundles are paid for differently.

Can you change an O2 SIM-only tariff during a longer contract?

On an eligible flexible tariff, yes — but changing your data plan is not the same as cancelling the contract. O2 extended its flexible-tariff scheme to new and upgrading SIM-only customers from 2 July 2026. On an eligible connection, you can usually move up or down among the tariffs available to you once per billing month, after the first 30 days; the change takes effect on your next bill date.

This can be useful if you need more data for a busy month, or want to reduce your allowance later without leaving O2. The catch is that moving to a lower tariff can remove benefits, potentially even if you later move back up. Check whether you would lose Plus or Ultimate extras, travel benefits, rollover eligibility or a promotional entitlement. The monthly charge will also change with the tariff you select. Your existing minimum-term and cancellation rules still apply.

Read O2's flexible-tariff rules and confirm that the specific SIM-only offer is eligible before you treat this as a benefit.

What do O2 Classic, Plus and Ultimate plans include?

The O2 badge alone does not show that an offer includes every O2 perk. O2 sells distinct plan levels, and not every SIM-only deal is a Plus or Ultimate plan, which matters when offers from different retailers look similar on price and UK data.

O2 plan levelMain buying considerationDetail to check
ClassicCore calls, texts, 5G and standard Europe Zone roaming; some offers include a time-limited ExtraWhether an Extra is included and when its free period ends; no automatic Plus or Ultimate benefits
PlusEligible plans add data rollover, the expanded O2 Travel Inclusive Zone and a longer introductory ExtraThat the exact offer is branded Plus, because not every data allowance qualifies
UltimateMore extensive international roaming and extra benefits on eligible plansThe particular tariff, a compatible device and the destinations actually included

O2's official tariff comparison describes a complimentary Extra for up to three months on Classic, up to six months on Plus, and for the lifetime of an eligible Ultimate plan. Plus advertises an enlarged travel zone; Ultimate goes further. An Extra's eligibility, redemption conditions and what happens when its included period ends should be checked on the exact offer. Leaving an Ultimate plan can convert an included Extra into a paid subscription; leaving within six months of redeeming it can also trigger charges for the remainder of that initial six-month period. For eligible Plus and Ultimate travel zones outside the standard Europe Zone, O2 specifies a 2Mbps roaming-data speed cap — useful for routine phone tasks, but an important limitation if you expect high-speed tethering or large downloads overseas. The published zone terms determine where this cap applies.

O2 also advertises features tied to buying a handset, including device warranties and Switch Up. Those are not standalone SIM-only benefits. The relevant test is whether an actual SIM-only perk — such as eligible data rollover, travel access or an entertainment Extra — saves you more than the additional airtime cost. Avoid paying a premium for the plan-level label alone.

Does O2 include data rollover?

Only on eligible plans. O2 includes data rollover on eligible Plus and Ultimate Pay Monthly plans. Unused data from the main monthly allowance carries into the next billing cycle and expires at the end of that cycle. Data that has already rolled over cannot roll over again, unlimited plans are excluded and Volt double-data portions do not qualify. O2's rules say rolled-over data is for UK use, not extra EU roaming.

On an eligible 50GB Plus plan, 20GB left over could give you 70GB available in the next UK billing cycle. There is a subtle restriction: O2 uses the new month's main allowance before it uses rolled-over data. So the previous month's 20GB is only useful if you exhaust the new allowance before the carried data expires. This is a buffer for unusually heavy months, not 20GB extra abroad or an accumulating data bank. If rollover is your main reason for choosing a plan, compare it with our UK data rollover SIM guide instead of assuming any O2 card includes it, and see O2's rollover rules for the exact conditions.

How much O2 data can you use in Europe?

O2's standard Europe Zone allowance is the smaller of your available UK monthly data allowance and 25GB. It covers eligible destinations and not every country that sits geographically in Europe, so check yours before you travel.

Your UK monthly allowanceStandard Europe Zone position
10GBUp to your 10GB monthly allowance, not an extra 25GB
20GBUp to 20GB of your allowance
50GBUp to 25GB of your allowance
UnlimitedStandard 25GB roaming limit, not unlimited roaming

On an O2 SIM with 50GB in the UK, a two-week European trip could draw on up to 25GB within the Europe Zone allowance, while a 10GB UK plan cannot produce 25GB abroad. If you reach the applicable limit, O2 says data stops until you buy a suitable Bolt On, and the network warns you as you approach the cap.

The standard Europe Zone and the O2 Travel Inclusive Zone are different benefits. On eligible Plus and Ultimate plans, the expanded travel benefits cover additional destinations outside Europe and are subject to 2Mbps data-speed limits in the relevant Inclusive Zone. Their fair-use and calling rules differ from ordinary UK usage: 'unlimited' international-zone data is not an unlimited-speed connection. Review O2's Europe roaming rules, the travel-zone terms and the current tier comparison for the actual destination and plan.

Calling an international number from the UK is not the same as roaming abroad. Using your SIM in France is one situation, and calling a French number from the UK is another, which can be chargeable. For broader comparisons, see our SIM-only deals with EU roaming.

Can Virgin Media customers get double O2 data with Volt?

Sometimes, and for an existing Virgin Media household it can be the strongest reason to consider O2. With qualifying Virgin Media broadband and an eligible O2 Pay Monthly subscription at the qualifying household address, Volt can double the eligible mobile data allowance. O2 also lists extra travel benefits and separate broadband improvements for qualifying households.

"Double data" has boundaries. It is a benefit of eligible O2 plans and qualifying Virgin Media broadband, not an automatic bonus for every O2 customer. O2's terms double allowances on eligible tariffs below 250GB, while eligible tariffs at or above 250GB can be increased to unlimited instead, and plans that are already unlimited gain no more UK data. The extra data is not rollover data, the EU roaming allowance does not automatically double with the domestic bundle, and some benefits depend on account and address matching or activation and may take time to appear.

If you already have eligible Virgin Media broadband, confirm your Volt eligibility before you reject a lower-data O2 deal. An eligible 30GB plan doubled to 60GB could be enough for a customer who would otherwise buy a much larger tariff. Do not count unconfirmed Volt data when you compare a card's base allowance, and see O2's Volt guidance.

Is O2 Priority worth paying extra for?

O2 Priority gives eligible O2 customers access to selected rewards, presale tickets and experiences. It can be a real differentiator if you regularly use a specific offer or attend events, but it is not a guaranteed monetary discount on your mobile bill. Decide which benefit you would actually use and compare its value with any difference in SIM cost. If you would not use the rewards, they carry £0 of value in your decision, and rewards and their eligibility can change independently of the SIM's data allowance.

O2's bundled entertainment Extras also need care. A free subscription for the first few months is not necessarily included for the whole contract, and continuation or cancellation charges follow that Extra's own terms. A discounted SIM plus an unwanted continuing Extra can be poorer value than a simpler tariff.

O2, giffgaff or Tesco Mobile: which gives you the better deal?

O2 is the network owner, but giffgaff and Tesco Mobile also use O2 infrastructure. That makes this a useful comparison if you like O2 reception but are not convinced by the O2-branded price or minimum term, and it avoids switching to a different radio network just to save money.

Your priorityStart by comparingThe trade-off
O2's own rewards or eligible Volt benefitsO2The extras may justify the cost but are not included on every card
A rolling O2-based SIM with straightforward data pricinggiffgaffSeparate giffgaff terms, and its included EU roaming limit is typically much lower
Clubcard pricing or an alternative O2-based contractTesco MobileEligible Clubcard offers and contract length set the price, and O2 Priority and Volt do not transfer

A dated example from the DealPriceCheck catalogue visible on 20–21 October 2026 shows an O2 50GB rolling plan at £20 per month and a giffgaff 50GB rolling plan at £15 per month; the giffgaff offer's own verification date was 12 October 2026. These are two specific listed plans, not the entire market or a claim that every O2 deal costs more. More importantly, they are not equal-feature products: the O2 listing includes up to 25GB of Europe Zone data while the giffgaff listing includes up to 5GB. The practical choice depends on whether you use that extra roaming and any eligible O2 benefits.

A £5 monthly difference would amount to £60 over twelve payments if both rates stayed unchanged. This gives you a practical break-even test: would O2's extra up-to-20GB roaming headroom, Priority offers or other benefits that actually apply to that plan save you more than £60 across those twelve payments? If you stay in the UK and do not use the perks, paying more is harder to justify. If you regularly need 15–20GB on European trips, the larger included roaming allowance can change the decision. This is a buyer's comparison method, not a monetary valuation of Priority rewards. Compare the giffgaff deals and Tesco Mobile deals alongside the O2 cards above. The separate guide to networks using O2 explains other brands and technical differences, while this page stays focused on buying O2-branded SIMs.

What if O2's signal or cost still does not work for you?

Another O2-based provider may not solve genuinely weak O2 reception at home. If you are willing to change underlying networks, start with 1pMobile SIM-only deals on EE or Lebara SIM-only deals on Vodafone. These are relevant alternatives when their coverage, term and extra features suit you; they are not substitutes for O2 Priority or Volt. Eligible Lebara plans may also appeal to customers who make international calls from the UK. Check the actual signal and product conditions before choosing. DealPriceCheck's SIM-only comparison includes network filters and Keep My Signal for comparing alternatives where staying on a host network is a priority.

Will O2 coverage, 5G, eSIM and Wi-Fi Calling work for you?

O2 supports 5G, eSIM and Wi-Fi Calling on suitable consumer phones and services. A 5G logo does not guarantee strong indoor reception, access to O2's newer standalone 5G+ features or identical performance on every device.

Before you commit, check signal in your home, workplace and on your regular journeys, not just the centre of your postcode. O2's coverage estimates can be affected by buildings, terrain and congestion, and its network and coverage information is a sensible starting point. If you need a digital SIM for a compatible phone, see DealPriceCheck's eSIM SIM-only deals, and remember that compatibility and activation still depend on your exact handset and subscription. Wi-Fi Calling can help inside a thick-walled house if your phone and Wi-Fi support it, and our Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE guide explains the difference.

How do you move your number to O2?

You can normally keep a UK mobile number when you switch to an O2 SIM.

  1. Text PAC to 65075 from the number you want to keep.
  2. Check any early-termination charge quoted by your current provider.
  3. Choose the O2 offer whose full-term cost and features suit you, then submit the PAC through O2's transfer process.
  4. Keep your old service active until the transfer is confirmed, since switches normally complete within one working day after the new provider receives a valid PAC.

If you are leaving without keeping the number, text STAC to 75075. Ofcom's mobile switching guidance explains the consumer rules. A PAC removes the need to cancel the old line separately in the normal switching process, but it does not erase charges owed under an existing minimum term.

O2 SIM-only FAQs

Does O2 have 30-day SIM-only deals?

Yes. O2 sells 30-day as well as 12-month and 24-month SIM-only options. Check whether the selected offer is a rolling Pay Monthly subscription and what notice or pricing terms apply, and do not treat it as traditional PAYG.

Do O2 SIM-only prices go up every April?

O2's published policy currently specifies a £2.50 annual increase from April 2027 for qualifying Pay Monthly voice airtime plans. Check the exact contract documents and the planned rise schedule, especially for short-term or older agreements; do not apply a standard voice-tariff rule to data-only products.

Is European roaming free with O2?

Eligible O2 Pay Monthly plans include roaming in the Europe Zone with no extra roaming fee, up to the smaller of 25GB and your UK allowance. Countries outside that zone and enhanced worldwide roaming have different conditions.

Do all O2 SIM-only deals include data rollover?

No. O2's advertised data rollover applies to eligible Plus and Ultimate Pay Monthly tariffs, not every Classic, rolling or unlimited offer. Rolled data lasts one following billing cycle and is UK-only.

Is O2 cheaper than giffgaff on the same network?

Not necessarily. They share O2 infrastructure but have different contracts, roaming allowances and perks. Compare today's matching data plans and full costs instead of declaring one provider cheaper.

Can I get double O2 data if I have Virgin Media broadband?

Potentially. Volt can boost data on eligible O2 Pay Monthly plans for qualifying Virgin Media broadband households. It depends on eligibility, address and account rules and plan conditions, and it is not automatic on every O2 tariff.

Our verdict: is an O2 SIM-only plan worth it?

O2 deserves a place on your shortlist if its coverage works where you need it and you will benefit from the perks attached to your offer. Its standard Europe Zone roaming, eligible Volt boosts and O2 Priority are reasons to compare it seriously instead of judging on price per gigabyte alone.

A long O2 commitment is harder to justify if the full cost exceeds a shorter or comparable plan and you will not use the extras. Before choosing View Deal above, apply four checks: (1) your real usage and coverage; (2) the full payment schedule including any scheduled increases; (3) the exact plan's Europe Zone, Plus, Ultimate or Volt eligibility; and (4) whether the extra benefits are worth the difference against a suitable alternative. Use Full plan details for the recorded terms, then the provider's checkout for the final offer.

Editorial check: 21 October 2026. Dated examples are illustrative; live offer availability and conditions may change. Use each card's verification date and confirm the exact tariff terms at checkout.
