Which UK networks support Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE?

EE, O2, Vodafone and Three support both Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE (4G Calling) on compatible UK phones. So do many smaller providers, including 1pMobile, Lyca Mobile, spusu, giffgaff, SMARTY, iD Mobile, VOXI and Lebara. But a network advertising both features does not mean they will work on every handset or tariff. Tesco's PAYG and Pay Monthly rules, for example, are different.

If mobile reception is poor indoors, Wi-Fi Calling may help without changing your number. If you are choosing a new SIM, check that your exact phone, SIM and plan can actually use Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE. The table below shows where to start; when compatibility is confirmed, compare current UK SIM-only deals rather than paying extra for a feature a suitable cheaper provider also supplies.

Both are network-based voice services, not WhatsApp or a data-only calling app. Wi-Fi Calling is most helpful when a building blocks mobile signal; VoLTE is essential to the modern outdoor/mobile voice experience. Neither feature guarantees a seamless handover if you move between Wi-Fi and 4G mid-call: that depends on the provider, phone, signal and configuration. See Ofcom's advice on improving indoor coverage.

Which UK mobile providers offer Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling?

The table separates provider capability from eligibility. “Yes” means the provider offers the feature to qualifying UK consumer customers; it is not a promise for every phone, SIM, product or imported model. “Reported” means the feature could not be confirmed from a sufficiently clear current first-party service policy. Information checked 21 October 2026.

Vodafone and Three are part of the VodafoneThree group, and some consumer brands have access to elements of both networks. These labels do not mean everyone has identical multi-network access. An MVNO using EE or O2 masts also does not automatically inherit every host-network voice feature. Our MVNO coverage and speeds guide explains why.

Two easily missed details in the smaller-brand rows: Asda Mobile says new-customer Wi-Fi Calling activation can take up to 24 hours, while Honest Mobile confirms Wi-Fi Calling on its Classic SIM and publishes a separate VoLTE-compatible phone list. Neither is evidence that every device works. Superdrug Mobile remains a check-before-buy case, not a confirmed recommendation.

Three exceptions worth knowing before you buy

Lyca is more capable than old comparisons suggest. Lyca now explicitly advertises Wi-Fi Calling across its SIM plans. The old blanket advice that it “may not support Wi-Fi Calling” is outdated. A compatible handset and working service are still required. If you want EE coverage, compare current Lyca Mobile SIM-only offers and confirm device support before buying.

Tesco PAYG is not O2 PAYG. O2 confirms Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling for eligible O2 PAYG customers. Tesco's Wi-Fi and 4G Calling help describes both services for Pay Monthly customers and directs PAYG users towards Pay Monthly. Yet Tesco's PAYG Essentials instructions say an Essentials phone needs VoLTE capability enabled. A hardware requirement does not establish that the PAYG service is provisioned for both features. These official pages do not give a consistent, unambiguous PAYG entitlement. If using Tesco PAYG, ask Tesco to confirm 4G voice and Wi-Fi Calling on your exact account and handset before transferring your number.

SMARTY compatibility can differ from Three. SMARTY's excluded-device list, updated in May 2026, names handsets such as Google Pixel 3, Fairphone 3 and Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) that it says may work on Three but will not work on SMARTY. That is a SMARTY-specific exclusion, not proof those phones cannot use 4G voice anywhere. If your exact model is listed, do not buy SMARTY merely because the specification sheet says “4G” or “VoLTE”.

Which is best for poor signal at home?

It depends on where the signal is weak. Wi-Fi Calling is a useful remedy for a house with thick walls and dependable broadband, but it does not fix a poor mobile signal on the street, on the train or after the router loses power.

Your problemBetter starting pointWhat to verify
No indoor signal, reliable home broadbandA SIM with confirmed Wi-Fi Calling for your handsetWhether incoming calls and SMS work over Wi-Fi on your actual account

If EE's signal is good where you live, both 1pMobile and Lyca are plausible lower-cost starting points. 1pMobile explicitly advertises Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE; Lyca advertises Wi-Fi Calling across its UK SIM plans. Compare their current packages on DealPriceCheck's EE-network SIM page. Then confirm your model with the chosen provider rather than assuming the EE logo settles it. You can also browse 1pMobile's UK products or review Lyca's cheap SIM range if you want to see each provider’s range directly. For tariff-specific pricing and purchase, use our live comparison cards and their existing View Deal links.

Prefer O2's coverage? Compare O2-network SIM deals, including giffgaff's offers. giffgaff supports both technologies but has a specific phone/software compatibility list. Its official Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE help is worth checking before using an older handset. This is different from saying every O2-based SIM works the same.

If Three or Vodafone coverage is better, use the Three-network comparison or Vodafone-network comparison. SMARTY, iD, Vodafone, VOXI and Talkmobile may suit you, subject to the phone requirements above. Do not pay more just because a large network advertises Wi-Fi Calling prominently: confirm compatibility, compare equal data allowances and total costs, and choose the cheaper suitable plan when the feature and coverage are genuinely equivalent.

Why VoLTE matters after the UK 3G switch-off

All four major UK mobile networks have completed their 3G shutdowns, as Ofcom confirms. Advice that UK 3G will close “soon” is outdated. This matters most when a phone can use 4G for browsing but falls back to an older network for an ordinary call.

A handset can show 4G data capability without being properly enabled for 4G voice on a particular SIM. It may previously have fallen back to 3G, or to 2G where available, when you dialled a number. With 3G gone, that fallback is no longer available. Some providers still have 2G for a limited period, but it is not a future-proof reason to keep a handset without working VoLTE.

Ofcom says UK 2G services will also be retired by 2033 at the latest, and some operators plan to start earlier. According to the UK Government’s published network-modernisation timetable, EE plans to begin retiring 2G from May 2029, O2 from summer 2029 and VodafoneThree’s remaining 2G service in spring 2030, with earlier local trials possible. Three did not operate a separate 2G network. These are announced plans, not guarantees of service at an individual postcode.

Buyer implication: a “4G” badge on the phone box does not guarantee VoLTE voice service with your chosen SIM. Before switching an older family member's phone, check the exact model against the destination network's VoLTE requirements. It is especially important if the phone is relied on for medical, security or everyday contact.

How to turn on Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE on iPhone or Android

iPhone: check the active SIM or eSIM line

  1. Open Settings, select Mobile Service or Mobile Data, and choose the line if you use two SIMs.
  2. Look for Wi-Fi Calling (on some iOS versions under Apps → Phone → Wi-Fi Calling) and enable it when available.
  3. Under Mobile Data Options → Voice & Data, leave a suitable 4G or 5G voice-enabled mode selected. Newer iOS versions may handle VoLTE automatically without a separate switch.
  4. Install pending iOS and carrier-settings updates. Check any on-screen emergency-address prompts.
  5. On a normal call in weak mobile reception, look for the network's Wi-Fi Calling indicator; the precise icon or label varies.

Do not treat the mere presence of a Wi-Fi Calling switch as proof that the provider has provisioned it on this SIM. The same phone may have different feature availability on two networks.

Samsung, Pixel and other Android phones

  1. Update the phone software, connect to Wi-Fi and open Settings.
  2. Search settings for Wi-Fi Calling; on some Samsung phones it is also in the Phone app settings or Quick Settings.
  3. Search for VoLTE, 4G Calling or SIMs → Mobile network. Some phones enable it automatically and show no toggle.
  4. If using two SIMs, check the settings for the number you actually use for calls.
  5. Test an ordinary incoming and outgoing call, and receive a standard SMS while the phone has weak indoor reception.

If your model isn't listed as supported, do not assume a dialler code, hidden setting or custom firmware will solve it. Carrier configuration can matter as much as the chipset. For example, Vodafone's official 4G Calling checker uses the phone's IMEI to check compatibility; use the equivalent check for the network you intend to buy.

How to tell whether Wi-Fi Calling is genuinely working

If mobile reception is poor but your Wi-Fi works, make a normal call using the Phone app to someone you know and check for a “Wi-Fi Call” indicator or a network-specific label. Try receiving a call and standard SMS too. A successful WhatsApp call proves only that your internet works; it does not verify your network's Wi-Fi Calling service. Do not place a test call to 999 or 112.

If you have strong mobile reception, your phone may choose cellular voice instead of Wi-Fi, even with the option enabled. Conversely, a Wi-Fi icon on the phone's status bar alone does not prove the call is using Wi-Fi Calling.

Calls still fail? Use this troubleshooting order

  1. Confirm the SIM and phone are eligible. Check the provider's exact model/firmware advice and whether the selected PAYG or pay-monthly product supports the service.
  2. Update and restart. Install system/carrier updates, then restart the handset and check the voice settings again.
  3. Test Wi-Fi itself. An unstable broadband connection, a guest-network sign-in page or a workplace firewall can prevent Wi-Fi Calling from connecting.
  4. Test ordinary calls and SMS separately. Not every implementation handles messaging identically, and iMessage, WhatsApp or RCS do not prove ordinary SMS works.
  5. Ask for voice provisioning support. If both toggles are present but neither works, ask your actual SIM provider whether Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE are enabled for your line. The host-network brand may not be able to fix an MVNO account.

Changing the SIM or network before checking the handset may leave you with the same fault. And be cautious about resetting all network settings: that can remove saved Wi-Fi networks, VPN information or other configuration, depending on the phone.

Charges, texts, roaming and emergency calls: what the labels don't tell you

Wi-Fi Calling is not a free international-calling loophole. A normal UK call over Wi-Fi generally uses your regular allowance or standard call charge. Calls to overseas numbers or premium services are charged under the relevant provider terms. Ordinary VoLTE calls likewise use the voice allowance and ordinarily do not consume your metered mobile-data bundle; they are not WhatsApp calls. Using Wi-Fi Calling can still consume a small amount of broadband data if your home connection has a cap.

Texts can matter more than HD voice. If you need bank verification codes indoors, check whether your chosen phone and network can actually receive ordinary SMS over Wi-Fi. Internet messaging services are separate. The ability to place a Wi-Fi voice call does not automatically prove that every one-time-password message will arrive on time.

Roaming follows separate rules. For example, O2's calling guidance, giffgaff's official guide and Sky's Wi-Fi Calling help restrict Wi-Fi Calling abroad. Some other providers have different policies, and overseas Wi-Fi can block the feature even if the SIM normally supports it. Never assume a Wi-Fi connection abroad makes voice calls free or avoids roaming. For mobile service while travelling, compare UK SIM deals with EU roaming separately.

Emergency calling needs special care. Certain supported networks can route 999 or 112 over Wi-Fi when mobile coverage is missing; O2 warns that the operator may need to ask for your location because Wi-Fi calls do not necessarily supply it. Wi-Fi Calling also fails without working broadband or power. In an emergency, use any working phone connection and state your location clearly. Do not make a non-emergency test call to 999 or 112.

Before buying: four checks that affect the actual SIM choice

  1. Will my exact phone make 4G calls on this provider? Check a model/IMEI compatibility page or ask support — especially for an older or imported handset.
  2. Can my chosen plan make and receive voice calls and SMS over Wi-Fi? Verify PAYG versus Pay Monthly restrictions, not just the brand's “Yes” badge.
  3. Which host network works where I use the phone? Check indoor and outdoor coverage, but remember that Wi-Fi Calling depends on a separate, working broadband connection.
  4. What is the full tariff cost? Compare the data amount you use, initial and ongoing payments, contract term and the existing Full plan details and View Deal options — not an undated advertised price.

For example, if you have reliable EE coverage and a compatible phone, compare EE-network offers — including the current 1pMobile and Lyca listings — rather than assuming an EE-branded SIM is required for Wi-Fi Calling. If another host network works better, compare O2-network, Vodafone-network or Three-network deals.

If you are keeping your handset, check its exact make, model, software and SIM eligibility before making a PAC transfer. Start with current SIM-only deals, or narrow the search to 30-day and no-contract options when flexibility matters. Use existing Full plan details and View Deal routes for actual offers. When switching, follow our guide to keeping your number rather than cancelling the old number first.

Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE FAQs

Which UK networks support Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE in 2026?

EE, O2, Vodafone and Three support both on eligible UK phones. Many smaller providers, including 1pMobile, Lyca Mobile, giffgaff, spusu, SMARTY, iD Mobile and Lebara, also offer both. Your plan and exact phone determine whether they work for you.

Is Wi-Fi Calling free, and does VoLTE use my data?

The technologies normally carry no extra feature charge. Ordinary calls still use your standard voice allowance or call rates. A normal VoLTE voice call is not deducted from the SIM's mobile-data allowance; Wi-Fi Calling uses the Wi-Fi/broadband connection instead.

Does Tesco Mobile Wi-Fi Calling work on PAYG?

Not confirmed from Tesco's current published guidance. Its Wi-Fi Calling/4G Calling page describes Pay Monthly eligibility, while its PAYG Essentials page requires a VoLTE-capable phone. That requirement is not a guarantee that both services are active on PAYG. Ask Tesco to confirm the particular line and handset before switching; O2's own PAYG rules do not transfer automatically to Tesco.

Why can my phone use 4G internet but not make calls?

It may lack working VoLTE provisioning or compatible carrier firmware for your network. UK 3G has already closed, and 2G is a limited and diminishing fallback. Ask the actual SIM provider to check the phone and account.

Has 3G been switched off in the UK?

Yes. All four major UK mobile networks have completed their 3G switch-offs, according to Ofcom. Some 2G voice fallback remains, but the operators plan to retire that as well, beginning in 2029. A 4G-capable phone still needs compatible VoLTE support to make ordinary calls over 4G.

Can I keep my number if I switch to a Wi-Fi Calling network?

Yes. Wi-Fi Calling uses your ordinary phone number. If moving between providers, obtain a PAC by texting PAC to 65075, then give it to the new provider. Changing only a phone's Wi-Fi Calling setting needs no PAC.

Is 5G Calling the same as VoLTE?

No. VoLTE is 4G Calling. Some providers also offer 5G Calling (VoNR) on specific 5G networks, phones and products. You do not need VoNR to benefit from Wi-Fi Calling or standard 4G Calling. O2's own 5G Calling eligibility, for example, is separate from its Wi-Fi and 4G PAYG support.

Bottom line: pick a UK SIM that can use both features on your exact phone, has reliable coverage away from Wi-Fi and offers a competitive total price for the period you expect to keep it. Compatibility comes before comparing deal prices.
