Which O2-network SIM deal is best for your needs?
There is no single best brand for everyone. The network underneath is shared, but your bill, commitment, roaming allowance and support come from the provider selling the SIM. Start with the decision that would make you regret a purchase.
| What matters most | Compare first | What could change the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Being able to leave soon | Monthly rolling offers from giffgaff or O2, where listed | Renewal dates and cancellation terms; do not assume every provider's “monthly” period means exactly 30 days. |
| Getting enough data at a good total cost | Eligible giffgaff longer contracts and Tesco Mobile offers, alongside rolling alternatives | Later payments, promotional data conditions, minimum term and early-exit charges. |
| Keeping the basic monthly charge predictable | Eligible Tesco Mobile Clubcard Price plans | Clubcard eligibility, the minimum term and what happens to the price after that term. |
| Using mobile data on European trips | The specific roaming terms of O2, giffgaff and Tesco Mobile | Included destinations, fair-use ceilings and whether your UK data allowance is smaller. |
| Getting O2-specific extras | Direct O2 SIM-only plans | Your eligibility for O2 Priority, possible Volt benefits and whether you would use them. |
This comparison contains selected offers, not every O2-network plan in the UK. Sky Mobile also uses O2's infrastructure, but it may not have a qualifying card in the live selection. If saving unused data matters, check Sky's own Piggybank conditions rather than assuming rollover lasts indefinitely. For a wider provider map, see which UK providers use O2's network; that guide explains network relationships, whereas this page helps you choose a deal.
A four-step way to use the live cards
- Check reception first. If O2 coverage is weak where you spend most of your time, changing to another O2-based brand may not solve it. Use the independent and network checkers below.
- Choose a realistic data range. Check recent usage in your phone settings or existing provider account, allowing for months when you travel or tether. A large unused allowance is not a saving.
- Filter by a commitment you can live with. A monthly rolling plan gives different freedom from an 18- or 24-month agreement, even when the monthly price looks similar.
- Open the full details before buying. Check the minimum-term cost, later payments, price-rise rules, EU allowance and device features. Then use View Deal to confirm the final price and terms with the provider.
If you may need to leave soon, widen your search to no-contract and rolling SIM-only deals across networks.
The price trap: compare the whole deal, not the first month
The cheapest starting price can be the more expensive choice once a promotion ends. For example, imagine two hypothetical O2-network plans offering the same UK data and features, each billed once per calendar month for 12 months:
| Illustrative plan | First payments | Remaining payments | Total for 12 payments |
|---|---|---|---|
| A: promotional headline of £6/month | 3 × £6 = £18 | 9 × £12 = £108 | £126 |
| B: £10/month throughout | 3 × £10 = £30 | 9 × £10 = £90 | £120 |
Plan A looks £4 cheaper at first, yet costs £6 more over the same 12 billing months. These are made-up numbers to show the calculation, not current offers or a price forecast. The example assumes no setup charges, extra usage or price changes; actual agreements can differ on all three.
Compare three separate things on the live cards:
- Starting and later monthly charges: a welcome discount may not run for the full term.
- Total cost across the relevant term: a one-month minimum term cost and an 18-month minimum contract cost cover different periods, so the smaller number is not necessarily the better long-term deal.
- Cost of losing flexibility: a longer agreement can be cheaper if you stay, but expensive if you need to leave. Ask whether a modest monthly saving is worth the potential early-exit liability.
If a card also shows an effective monthly cost, check the period and any assumed price increases behind it. It is useful for understanding one offer, but it does not make different minimum terms directly interchangeable.
Annual increases are another reason not to multiply today's headline charge blindly. O2 publishes its applicable annual price-change terms. Tesco Mobile says eligible Clubcard Price plans freeze the basic monthly usage charge during the minimum term; that is not a promise about every Tesco tariff, extra charge or the period after the minimum term. Tesco's pricing guidance also explains when annual increases can resume. Check the individual agreement rather than relying on a generic “price changes” badge.
Likewise, giffgaff's 18-month SIM contracts are not monthly rolling plans. As checked on 19 October 2026, its contract guidance calculated an early termination charge as 50% of the current or most recent plan's monthly cost × the number of full months remaining. For illustration, a £10 plan with six full months left would mean £30 under that formula. giffgaff also allows changes between eligible monthly contract plans without restarting the 18-month commitment, but that is not the same as being able to cancel without a fee. Check its current formula before signing.
A standard giffgaff rolling plan, by contrast, normally runs for one calendar month, according to giffgaff's current plan guidance. For any promotional extra data, check the activation deadline and how long the increased allowance lasts on the actual offer.
If avoiding scheduled increases matters more than the provider name, also compare SIM-only offers with no annual price rises and read our guide to UK SIM-only price rises.
O2, giffgaff or Tesco Mobile: when is paying more worthwhile?
A direct O2 plan is worth considering when you genuinely value an O2-specific benefit, not because the O2 logo automatically means better coverage. Eligible customers may value O2 Priority, and qualifying O2/Virgin Media households may have access to Volt benefits. Check eligibility, the particular SIM and whether the benefit offsets any extra cost. These are not universal freebies for every O2 contract or the other brands on its network.
giffgaff is worth comparing when you want a choice between rolling and committed terms. Do not treat an 18-month promotional plan as a flexible monthly product. Its lower headline price, if any, must be judged against the full minimum term and exit conditions. As checked on 19 October 2026, giffgaff's plan guidance says SIM-only monthly and 18-month plans do not require a credit check; handset finance is different. Verify eligibility at checkout. Customer support, account management and plan features are giffgaff's, even though the radio network is O2's.
Tesco Mobile is worth comparing when Clubcard eligibility, contract price predictability or its roaming arrangement fits your use. A Clubcard Price freeze applies to the stated basic charge of an eligible agreement during the minimum term, not every service or every Tesco offer. Confirm whether the live card is a Clubcard Price deal before relying on that benefit.
If you only want offers sold by a particular brand, use the existing O2 SIM-only deals, giffgaff deals or Tesco Mobile deals pages. Those brand pages serve a different purpose from this cross-provider O2-network comparison.
EU roaming: one UK network, very different allowances
Using the same network at home does not give O2, giffgaff and Tesco Mobile the same roaming policy. The following provider rules were checked on 19 October 2026. They are dated policy facts, not guaranteed future allowances; the terms attached to the plan you buy take priority.
| Provider | Included roaming position for eligible plans | Decision-making detail |
|---|---|---|
| O2 | Europe Zone use is generally subject to the lower of your UK data allowance and a 25GB fair-use ceiling. | A UK plan with less than 25GB does not acquire 25GB of roaming data. |
| giffgaff | EU and selected-destination included data is subject to the lower of your UK allowance and 5GB per plan. | With 2GB UK data, at most 2GB can be used as included roaming data, not 5GB extra. |
| Tesco Mobile | Eligible customers can use their UK allowances in specified Home From Home destinations, subject to its conditions and fair use. | Verify the particular destination and tariff. “Roaming included” does not mean every country or unlimited international use. |
See the first-party terms: O2 roaming fair use, giffgaff EU roaming and Tesco Mobile Home From Home.
Two details catch people out. First, the roaming ceiling is part of, not an addition to, the UK allowance. If a deal card advertises a higher generic roaming limit than the plan's UK data, check the lower-of rule in the provider's terms. Second, giffgaff's included roaming has eligibility and duration conditions, including a published 63-day limit for qualifying UK-resident users; a long stay abroad needs an extra check. Countries outside the listed zone can attract charges even when geographically close to the EU.
Roaming while abroad is different from calling a foreign number while you are in the UK. Do not assume the latter is inclusive. For deals on other networks, compare the EU roaming SIM-only selection.
Will an O2-based alternative give you the same signal and speed?
Expect the same underlying O2 radio footprint, not necessarily an identical service. Local coverage and congestion affect all users, while the plan and provider can determine eligibility for particular features. A shared network does not guarantee identical 5G/5G+ access, speeds, Wi-Fi Calling, eSIM activation or support arrangements.
Check the places that matter: home (including indoors), work and your usual commute. Start with the O2 coverage checker, then compare Ofcom's independent mobile coverage predictions. Both are estimates rather than handset tests. Building materials, local congestion, your phone and network maintenance can change your real experience.
If O2 works well at those locations, an alternative O2-based provider might let you change the commercial terms without changing the underlying network. If the physical O2 signal is consistently poor, switching from O2 to giffgaff or Tesco Mobile is not a reliable coverage fix. Compare EE-network, Vodafone-network or Three-network offers instead, then check the actual postcode and the provider's access to its network. Vodafone and Three's network integration does not imply that every plan already has identical combined coverage.
Before placing an order, check your particular phone and plan for Wi-Fi Calling, eSIM, tethering and any accessibility feature you depend on. For the reasons provider features can differ on shared masts, see our MVNO coverage and speeds guide. The eSIM SIM-only comparison is useful if avoiding a physical SIM is a requirement.
How to switch to an O2-network SIM and keep your number
Changing provider does not usually mean changing your phone number:
- Check your current agreement for any minimum-term charges before requesting a switch. Ofcom says you can text INFO to 85075 to check whether you are in or out of contract.
- To keep your UK mobile number, text PAC to 65075 from your existing SIM and provide the code to the new provider. To switch without keeping the number, text STAC to 75075 instead.
- Follow the new provider's activation instructions and confirm the transfer has completed before discarding the old SIM.
Ofcom sets out the official process in its Text to Switch guidance. A move from O2 to giffgaff or Tesco Mobile is still a provider switch, even though all use O2's underlying infrastructure. An O2 customer merely changing an O2 tariff should check O2's internal change-plan procedure. A PAC or STAC does not wipe out any valid outstanding contract charges.
O2-network SIM deals: questions buyers ask
What is the cheapest O2-network SIM-only deal?
The answer changes with the live offers and whether “cheapest” means the first payment, the ongoing monthly charge or the total across a commitment. Use the filters and sorting above, then inspect Full plan details. This is a selected-deals comparison, not a guarantee of the lowest price anywhere in the UK.
Can I get an O2-network SIM without an 18- or 24-month contract?
Yes. Eligible monthly rolling options exist on O2's network. Compare the available shorter terms in the live cards, then check their actual renewal periods and cancellation rules. In particular, giffgaff describes its standard rolling plan as lasting one calendar month.
Is giffgaff a different network from O2?
No. giffgaff uses O2's underlying UK mobile network, but it is a separate retail provider. Your contract, billing, support and eligibility for some features are not automatically the same as an O2-branded customer's.
Does Tesco Mobile offer 5G on O2's network?
Tesco Mobile offers 5G on eligible plans, compatible devices and covered locations using O2 infrastructure. Confirm the individual plan and phone; shared masts do not establish that every advanced 5G feature or speed is identical.
Do all O2-network SIMs include 25GB of EU roaming?
No. 25GB is an O2 fair-use ceiling on eligible plans, not a universal O2-network allowance. A smaller UK allowance remains the limit, and providers such as giffgaff have different rules. Check both your destination and the provider's current fair-use terms.
Can I keep my number if I move from O2 to Tesco Mobile or giffgaff?
Normally, yes. It is a change of provider, so use the PAC process described above. Check your old contract for any remaining charges before switching.
Is a giffgaff 18-month contract the same as a rolling plan?
No. The 18-month product has a minimum commitment and may have an early termination charge; a rolling plan has separate renewal and cancellation terms. Look at the contract length field, not just the brand name.
