Sky Mobile vs Talkmobile: Is Piggybank Worth Paying For?

Talkmobile is usually the cheaper, easier-to-leave option for 25GB or more. Sky Mobile can still be worth considering if O2 covers your home better, you often stream eligible Sky apps, or a shared Piggybank saves you from buying more data. The closest headline contest is 10GB: our Sky 24-month card starts at £6 a month, only 5p above Talkmobile 10GB at £5.95 on a rolling plan. But that is a comparison of starting payments, not identical commitments. For Sky 25GB and 75GB, the provider's published offers also have scheduled price steps after month 12, which change the two-year maths.

The key distinction: Sky's extras may improve the experience, but they do not automatically repay a higher monthly charge. Ask whether you actually need an O2-based connection and whether the extra features avoid a real cost.

How do Sky Mobile and Talkmobile SIM prices compare?

These specific DealPriceCheck cards compare 24-month Sky contracts with 30-day rolling Talkmobile plans. The price gaps here are opening payments, not verified long-term savings; some allowances differ. Choose a plan that actually covers your usage.

The price step most comparisons miss: Sky's current public 25GB offer is £10 for 12 months, then £14, and its 75GB offer is £14 for 12 months, then £22, before any additional contract price changes. Our Sky 25GB and 75GB deal cards show lower 'minimum contract cost' figures than these published price schedules. The exact checkout terms must be checked before relying on either total. The £6 Sky 10GB and £11 Sky 50GB deals also lack a confirmed full payment schedule, so treat those amounts as introductory charges rather than guaranteed two-year prices.

When 10GB is a genuine close contest

The Sky 10GB tracked offer and Talkmobile 10GB rolling SIM differ by just 5p at the displayed opening prices. If Sky really stayed at £6 and Talkmobile at £5.95 for all 24 payments, the difference would be £1.20 (£144 against £142.80). That is a conditional illustration, because the special tracked Sky price does not itself establish all 24 payments.

But the price comparison is not equal in risk. Sky's £6 offer has a 24-month minimum term, while the Talkmobile option is rolling. Sky may increase its charge during the contract, whereas Talkmobile's future rolling price is not guaranteed for two years either. Someone who might move, change jobs or need a different network in six months should give flexibility serious weight. The Sky 10GB plan details show its tracked purchase route and the price-change warning. If O2 works better for you, compare that specific offer with Sky 30-day alternatives before accepting a 24-month term.

At 25GB to 30GB, cheaper data starts to win

At the snapshot, Sky 25GB started at £10, while Talkmobile 30GB rolling cost £6.95. Talkmobile gives 5GB more for £3.05 less on the initial monthly comparison. Sky's published standard 25GB promotion is £10 for the first 12 months and £14 thereafter: £288 over 24 payments before any other increase. Twenty-four unchanged Talkmobile payments at £6.95 would be £166.80, a conditional £121.20 gap, not the £73.20 that results from incorrectly treating Sky's opening price as permanent. The linked Sky campaign may have a different schedule; the public example should not be mistaken for its final checkout quote.

A Sky buyer needs a concrete reason to pay the difference: better O2 service at an important address, genuinely useful Watch benefits, or Piggybank top-ups that avoid an otherwise necessary cost. Being able to accumulate unused GB is not itself that benefit.

At 50GB to 60GB, is Sky Piggybank worth the premium?

The Sky 50GB tracked offer starts at £11; the Talkmobile 60GB rolling SIM costs £7.95. Sky is £3.05 more at the opening price for 10GB less fresh data. Multiplying £11 by 24 yields £264, the figure shown on our card; 24 unchanged Talkmobile payments would be £190.80. But the £11 Sky offer is a tracked affiliate product whose full year-two schedule was not independently confirmed; the £73.20 difference is only a flat-price scenario, not a confirmed two-year saving.

Sky could still be right if you need O2 coverage or benefit from saved data across distant billing periods, rather than simply using 60GB every month. But even a very busy month does not automatically favour Sky: at our check Talkmobile also offered 80GB for £8.95 and 100GB for £9.95. Price a larger ordinary allowance before giving Piggybank a monetary value.

At 75GB to 100GB, check your normal peak first

Sky 75GB opens at £14 and Talkmobile 80GB rolling is £8.95: an initial £5.05 difference. Sky's published 75GB deal rises to £22 after month 12. That yields £432 over 24 payments before any additional rise, compared with £214.80 for 24 Talkmobile payments held at £8.95, a conditional £217.20 gap. The tracked campaign's own payment schedule takes precedence. If you need 90GB–100GB most months, Sky's 75GB allocation is insufficient without a dependable saved balance; Talkmobile's 100GB rolling was £9.95 in the checked catalogue.

On Sky, an Unlimited option may suit consistent high usage, but UK Unlimited does not build Piggybank data. Do not buy Unlimited to bank spare GB.

Sky 30-day SIM vs Talkmobile 30-day SIM: which is cheaper without a long term?

Comparing only Sky's £6 or £11 fixed-term offers can make Sky look more flexible than it is. If leaving early matters, compare rolling plans on both sides.

Flexible-plan comparisonSky 30-day rollingTalkmobile 30-day rollingBuying consequence

Roughly 75–80GBSky 75GB, £19 first month; then £25Talkmobile 80GB, £8.95Talkmobile £10.05 lower initially and £16.05 lower thereafter

Our checked Sky rolling selection has 3GB, 5GB, 25GB and 75GB cards, not an equivalent 50GB rolling card. Sky's official 30-day promotion spells out the first-month discount for 5GB, 25GB and 75GB; the DealPriceCheck cards show only the initial price. Do not confuse the £11 Sky 50GB 24-month price with a flexible rolling offer.

A rolling plan is useful when you want to test O2 or Vodafone/Three reception, are between homes, or expect your data needs to change. Cancellation notice, billing dates and the exact contract summary still matter. Sky states that its 30-day rolling service can be cancelled on 30 days' notice. Sky's advertised rolling deals are still subject to status and credit check, so '30-day' means a short commitment, not prepaid PAYG.

Sky 24-month vs Talkmobile 12-month: how much is the full commitment?

The cheapest first payment is a poor way to judge a one- or two-year agreement. Compare the number of committed payments, introductory steps and future price changes.

OfferFirst advertised paymentWhat can be established for its minimum term
Sky 10GB tracked, 24 months£6/month£144 only if £6 lasts all 24 payments; later schedule not verified for this affiliate-only deal
Sky 25GB tracked, 24 months£10/monthSky's published UK 25GB schedule: 12 × £10 + 12 × £14 = £288 before further increases; exact linked-offer checkout must confirm it
Sky 50GB tracked, 24 months£11/month£264 only if £11 lasts all 24 payments; exact later schedule not independently verified
Sky 75GB tracked, 24 months£14/monthSky's published UK 75GB schedule: 12 × £14 + 12 × £22 = £432 before further increases; exact linked-offer checkout must confirm it
Talkmobile 100GB, 12 months£4.98/month3 × £4.98 + 9 × £9.95 = £104.49 on the dated promotion
Talkmobile 150GB, 12 months£5.97/month3 × £5.97 + 9 × £11.95 = £125.46 on the dated promotion

The £288 and £432 examples reflect the published public Sky offers, not independently verified totals for every affiliate promotion. The tracked deal's full payment schedule controls the purchase decision.

The Talkmobile 12-month examples have different allowances and shorter minimum terms than the Sky 24-month offers. This is a contract-risk and payment-schedule comparison, not a like-for-like 100GB-versus-25GB value ranking. The point is why buying on an initial banner alone can be misleading. Their three-payment discounts are time-sensitive, and the later regular prices matter more than the opening £4.98 or £5.97.

For comparison, twelve unchanged payments on Talkmobile's 100GB rolling plan at £9.95 would be £119.40, against £104.49 on the checked 12-month introductory schedule: £14.91 less, in exchange for a 12-month commitment. That is a conditional worked example, not evidence that a discount remains available for future joiners.

What about 24 months on Talkmobile?

Our checked Talkmobile catalogue chiefly offers 30-day rolling and 12-month contracts, not a matching 24-month fixed SIM. You can model 24 payments of a current Talkmobile rolling plan to understand what it would cost if the same price held, but that is not a guaranteed 24-month contract total. Conversely, a Sky 24-month baseline may exclude permitted future price rises. The real comparison must include the provider's contract summary and any promotional step-up.

Can Sky Mix remove the minimum-term commitment?

Sky Mix lets eligible customers change data allowances. It does not automatically cancel a 24-month minimum term, erase an early termination fee, or preserve every promotion when you move to a different allowance. Downgrades can take effect later under the contract's rules. If you expect to need a different network or provider, choose a rolling plan rather than counting on Mix as an escape clause.

For the broader trade-off between flexible and fixed terms, see our 30-day SIM guide and SIM-only price rises explained.

Is Sky Piggybank actually worth more than Talkmobile's cheaper data?

Piggybank is a flexibility feature, not a refund for unused gigabytes. On eligible fixed-data Sky Mobile plans, unused data is saved at the end of a billing period. You can redeem it later, in whole gigabytes, to top up an eligible Sky SIM, share a balance with other qualifying SIMs on the account, or exchange it for a reward under the terms available at redemption.

Four limits change its value:

  1. Saved data expires after 12 months. A large balance is not permanent value.
  2. Unlimited plans do not accumulate Piggybank data. Buy one for unlimited UK use, not data banking.
  3. There is no guaranteed cash rate per GB. Reward values and products can change, and unused rewards are not money in your current account.
  4. Your contract still applies. A smaller data allowance, a saved balance and Sky Mix do not remove a fixed term or any eligible early-exit charge.

A worked example: 50GB Sky vs 60GB Talkmobile

Imagine you use 10GB in a quiet January and 75GB in a busy February, with no other usage, no expired balance and both networks working equally well. A Sky 50GB plan would move roughly 40GB into Piggybank after January. In February, you could redeem 25GB from that bank to reach 75GB of usable data, subject to Sky's rules.

Talkmobile's 60GB rolling SIM would cover January but not the 75GB February total. You might need to upgrade to a bigger allowance, arrange a permitted add-on or use less data. But Talkmobile's checked 80GB rolling plan cost £8.95, below Sky's £11 50GB fixed-term charge. If that larger Talkmobile plan works for you, banking data may still not justify Sky's premium.

The useful question is not How much data could I bank? It is What would Piggybank let me avoid paying for, compared with the cheapest suitable alternative on a network that works? If the answer is nothing, Piggybank's financial value to you is zero.

When a household Piggybank is genuinely useful

Suppose several eligible Sky SIMs share one account. One member regularly has spare data while another occasionally goes beyond their ordinary allowance. A shared Piggybank can move data where it is needed without automatically buying the other member a permanently larger plan. Sky says eligible accounts can have up to seven SIMs contributing to and sharing the balance.

But a household with two inexpensive Talkmobile SIMs might still pay less overall. Add all Sky line charges, term obligations, possible rises and real top-up costs, then compare that total with the combined Talkmobile payments. Shared data is convenient, not free money. For rollover mechanics across providers, use our dedicated data rollover guide. This comparison is about whether paying for Sky rather than Talkmobile is worthwhile.

Does Sky Mobile Watch make Sky worth paying extra for?

Sky Mobile Watch can let customers stream qualifying Sky apps in the UK without consuming their ordinary data allowance, subject to Sky's rules. Sky News, Sky Sports and Sky Go are among the relevant apps, but access to subscription content still depends on the Sky TV package you actually have.

Two details often get missed: you need at least 50MB of plan data available to use Watch, and some advertising within or before streams can consume normal data. Netflix, YouTube, Spotify and other non-Sky apps are not included merely because you use a Sky SIM. The Watch benefit is for eligible UK use and should not be treated as a roaming entitlement.

If you watch live Sky Sports or Sky Go regularly on mobile data, Watch might allow you to buy a smaller data allowance than you otherwise would. Compare an actual Sky 10GB offer with Sky 25GB: moving down a tier only saves money if the full term, promotional changes and Sky TV entitlement work for you. That is a more credible reason to choose Sky than claiming Piggybank GB have a fixed redemption value. If you mainly watch Netflix or browse social media, the Sky-specific Watch advantage may be minimal.

An easy test is to inspect your phone's data-usage figures for the apps you actually use, then compare Sky's eligible SIMs against Talkmobile's cheaper regular allowances. For help estimating your usage, see how much mobile data you need.

Sky Mobile vs Talkmobile coverage: O2 or Vodafone and Three?

Sky Mobile operates on O2's UK mobile network. Talkmobile's current official website advertises automatic access to both Vodafone and Three networks. That is a material update from older comparisons that call Talkmobile simply Vodafone-only.

It does not mean a Talkmobile handset can necessarily use every radio site, frequency, standalone 5G feature or performance tier sold directly by Vodafone or Three. Integration and access can vary by location, device and service arrangements. Likewise, Sky using O2 does not promise identical performance to every retail O2 tariff.

Check Ofcom's Map Your Mobile tool for O2 and the relevant Vodafone and Three coverage at home, at work and on your usual journeys. Use the providers' own checker as a secondary source. Pay particular attention to indoor 4G and call reliability: a fast outdoor 5G result is not a substitute for being reachable in your home office.

For a fuller explanation of Sky's underlying network, use Sky Mobile coverage. The MVNO coverage and speeds guide explains why sharing infrastructure does not guarantee identical speeds. This page stays focused on buying Sky rather than Talkmobile.

Roaming: is Talkmobile cheaper in Europe than Sky Mobile?

For many short European trips, Talkmobile starts with a price advantage. Eligible plans include use of UK calls, texts and data in listed European destinations, generally with a 5GB roaming-data fair-use limit. Sky's Roaming Passport Plus normally costs £2 per 24 hours of qualifying use in covered destinations, on top of the UK SIM bill. Eligible Sky VIP Diamond customers may get that pass free, so check your actual Sky VIP status before adding daily roaming charges to your comparison.

Travelling outside Talkmobile's European zoneSky Passport Plus may cover some of Sky's other listed destinationsStandard European allowance may not applyCheck both destination lists first

Sky's published trigger is a call, a sent text or more than 10MB of data in a covered destination; ordinary usage below that data threshold needs the applicable tariff rules checked. A standard paid pass counts towards the spend cap. The £2 charge is in addition to the UK SIM price, except where a verified VIP benefit removes it. Talkmobile's included 5GB is a ceiling on qualifying roaming use, not an extra 5GB added to your UK allowance. Its Zone A list includes places such as France, Spain and Germany but excludes some nearby territories, so check the exact destination. Using either service abroad continuously rather than for a holiday can trigger fair-use controls.

For a regular UK user who travels in Europe twice a year and stays under 5GB each trip, Talkmobile's included roaming may strengthen its cost advantage. Someone travelling beyond Talkmobile's included Europe zone may find Sky's broader Passport Plus coverage useful, but a £2-a-day option still needs to be compared with the total trip cost. Our EU roaming SIM comparison covers the wider market; this page compares these two named providers.

eSIM, 5G, Wi-Fi Calling and hotspot use

Both providers advertise 5G and eSIM services for supported phones and eligible configurations. Talkmobile's current site also explicitly lists Wi-Fi Calling, while Sky documents Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling. Older comparison pages that mark Talkmobile 5G, Wi-Fi Calling and eSIM as universally unavailable are not reliable evidence of the current product.

An eSIM badge is not a guarantee that every handset, smartwatch, tablet or imported device will activate. Check your exact device model, operating system, activation process and whether you need to keep a second line active. If your phone has no physical SIM slot, establish eSIM eligibility before ordering a SIM-only plan or requesting a PAC.

Tethering is available subject to data and fair-use terms. Sky says eligible Sky-app streaming on a device connected to a Sky Mobile hotspot can also qualify for Watch, though qualifying apps and advertising restrictions still apply. It does not make general laptop browsing, video calls, cloud backups or non-Sky streaming free. On a limited allowance, a video call or cloud backup can consume a large quantity of data. Our UK eSIM guide and Wi-Fi Calling guide cover device-level considerations in greater depth.

Does switching from Talkmobile to Sky make sense?

There are two separate decisions: whether O2 is a better network for you and whether Sky's tariff is worth the commitment. If you are already on Talkmobile and your signal works, a 24-month Sky deal should offer a clear practical gain before you move. If the existing Talkmobile service drops calls indoors, an O2-based Sky SIM could be worth more than a small recurring price difference.

Before switching, ask yourself:

  1. What do you really pay now? Look at your actual Talkmobile bill and whether a promotion is ending. Do not compare only with a standard advertised tariff.
  2. How much data do you use in your busiest normal month? If 60GB already covers it, a Sky 50GB Piggybank may not help.
  3. Would O2 improve coverage? Test a Sky rolling SIM or compatible second eSIM before committing to a long term.
  4. Which Sky feature would you really use? A banked balance you never withdraw, a reward you never redeem and Sky apps you never open should not justify a higher payment.
  5. What happens if you leave early? Check the remaining minimum term and any separate handset payments. A bundled phone loan and airtime service can have different obligations.

How to keep your phone number

You can normally move a number between UK mobile providers with a PAC. Text PAC to 65075 from the line you want to keep, then give the code to your new provider during the switching process. A PAC normally remains valid for 30 days. For multiple lines on one account, use the account-based process instead of relying on a single-number text.

Check your existing minimum term and any exit charges before requesting the move. Do not cancel the old number first: the receiving network coordinates the transfer. If you do not want to keep the number, the separate STAC to 75075 process applies. Our number switching guide covers the process and common faults.

Three expensive mistakes in this comparison

Multiplying Sky's advertised first payment by 24. Several public Sky deals step up after month 12, and its rolling deals can step up after month one. Even when a tracked card shows a flat minimum total, check whether the actual checkout agrees. A Sky 24-month price and a Talkmobile 30-day price also carry different exit risks.

Treating Piggybank as a cash rebate. Unused data can be useful later, but it expires, has no guaranteed redemption rate and may be unnecessary when the competing plan already gives you a larger allowance for less.

Assuming Talkmobile still uses Vodafone alone. Its present official website advertises access to Vodafone and Three. Historical network tables should not determine a purchase without a current local coverage test.

Sky Mobile vs Talkmobile: frequently asked questions

Is Sky Mobile cheaper than Talkmobile?

Not on most of the 25GB–100GB pairs checked. Sky's tracked 10GB offer starts at £6, just 5p more than Talkmobile 10GB rolling, but requires a 24-month commitment. Public Sky 25GB and 75GB offers also have a scheduled increase after 12 months. Compare full payments, not just the opening price.

Does Sky Mobile use the same network as Talkmobile?

No. Sky uses O2. Talkmobile currently advertises automatic Vodafone and Three network access. Coverage and performance depend on location, handset and exact access, so check your postcode and test the service where it matters.

Is Sky Piggybank better than Talkmobile's data allowance?

Only if you use the saved gigabytes to avoid a real cost. Sky's eligible fixed-data plans can bank spare data for up to 12 months; Talkmobile's ordinary listed SIMs do not have an equivalent multi-month bank but may offer a larger fresh monthly allowance at a lower price. Neither approach wins for everyone.

Does Sky Unlimited add data to Piggybank?

No. Under the UK Sky Mobile rules, Unlimited Data plans do not generate unused allowance for Piggybank. Do not confuse them with eligible finite-data plans.

Does Talkmobile offer 30-day and 12-month SIM-only deals?

Yes. Its catalogue includes 30-day rolling SIMs and separate 12-month products. Some 12-month deals show a reduced introductory price followed by a higher regular price. Read the whole payment schedule and minimum commitment before choosing.

Is Sky Mobile 50GB better than Talkmobile 60GB?

Sky 50GB may suit you if O2 coverage is stronger, eligible Sky streaming saves ordinary data, or you repeatedly use Piggybank top-ups. Our Sky 50GB affiliate card starts at £11 on a 24-month term, versus Talkmobile 60GB at £7.95 rolling. Talkmobile offers 10GB more and an easier exit. The Sky £11 rate's full 24-month schedule needs confirmation at checkout.

Which is better for roaming in Europe?

Talkmobile generally has the lower upfront roaming cost for eligible short trips within its 5GB European fair-use allowance. Sky's Roaming Passport Plus generally costs £2 for each 24 hours of qualifying use in covered destinations, on top of the SIM plan. Destination lists, fair use and charges outside the allowance can change the result.

Does Talkmobile have 5G, Wi-Fi Calling and eSIM?

Its current official website advertises all three, subject to handset and service compatibility. Don't rely on older third-party feature grids saying Talkmobile has none of them.

Can Sky Mix let me cancel a 24-month contract at any time?

No. Sky Mix can let you change your data plan under its rules; it doesn't automatically release you from a fixed minimum term or any applicable early-termination charge. Use a rolling deal if being free to leave is important.

Can I keep my number when moving from Talkmobile to Sky?

Yes, normally. Request a PAC from Talkmobile by texting PAC to 65075 and give it to Sky when arranging your new SIM. Check any existing commitment and device finance first; keep the original line active until the transfer completes.

Verdict: when is Sky Mobile worth paying for?

Sky is worth considering when O2 reception is materially better, you really use qualifying Sky streaming, or a shared Piggybank avoids a paid top-up. Its tracked 10GB offer looks competitive on its first payment, but the full contract schedule must support that price. A 24-month commitment and a scheduled year-two increase can outweigh a small opening-price advantage.

Talkmobile is the stronger price-and-flexibility starting point for many 25GB–100GB buyers in this snapshot. Provided its Vodafone/Three service works well at your locations, a larger rolling allowance can be worth more than a Sky Piggybank you rarely use. Sky remains a legitimate alternative where its specific benefits solve a real problem.
