Sky Mobile vs Lebara: Which UK SIM-Only Deal Is Better?

Short answer: Choose Sky Mobile if O2 gives you the better signal and you will use its Piggybank for spare data, share banked data across family SIMs or watch eligible Sky apps on the move. Choose Lebara if Vodafone works better, you regularly call international numbers from the UK, you want included roaming in qualifying European destinations and India, or you prefer its advertised no-annual-price-rise policy. Lebara also sells 30-day SIM-only plans with no conventional credit check, while Sky offers rolling and longer pay-monthly contracts. Neither is always cheaper, so compare the exact data allowance, every scheduled payment, roaming and commitment.

Compare both: current Sky Mobile SIM-only deals and current Lebara SIM-only deals. Both are our affiliate partners, and the cards show selected live offers, not every plan either operator sells. Open Full plan details on the offer you want, check the complete payment schedule (including any advertised introductory step-up), then use its View Deal button.

Start by establishing whether O2 or Vodafone works better where you live, work and travel. If both do, use your expected international calls, travel days and real data use to compare equivalent offers.

Is O2 or Vodafone better where you live?

Sky uses O2's network and Lebara uses Vodafone's. O2 and Vodafone can share physical mast sites, but they operate distinct mobile services with different coverage and capacity. Local reception may settle the choice before price or extras.

Use Ofcom's Map Your Mobile checker. Select O2 for Sky and Vodafone for Lebara, then compare predicted indoor and outdoor 4G and 5G coverage at home, at work and on a route you travel often. If your flat has thick walls or your commute is rural, the outdoor postcode result alone isn't enough. Ofcom's maps can't guarantee a particular phone's signal or speed at a particular moment.

Vodafone is reliable, O2 is patchyStart with Lebara's offers, even if Sky advertises more extras

One network is being upgraded locallyChoose on coverage you can use today, not on a promised improvement

The Vodafone and Three network integration may change coverage over time, but it doesn't mean every Vodafone-based reseller gets the same access to upgraded masts or premium 5G. Sky's O2 host doesn't guarantee that its speeds match a direct O2 contract either. Our guides to MVNO coverage and speeds and Sky Mobile coverage explain the background.

Is Sky faster than Lebara on 5G?

There is no verified nationwide winner. Both market 5G on eligible plans and compatible phones, and results depend on location, handset radio bands, network capacity and the plan. Sky's standard 5G uses a free 5G Network add-on that may need switching on, and its separate 5G+ service has narrower handset and eSIM requirements. Lebara's normal 5G is not the same as Vodafone's separately marketed premium tiers.

Both support Wi-Fi Calling or 4G Calling on qualifying phones, but a handset that works on one carrier may not be supported on the other. Check this before you move your main number, especially if you rely on indoor calls or use an imported phone.

Which is cheaper, Sky Mobile or Lebara?

Neither, in every case. Compare two actual plans that meet the same need over the same period. A Sky 24-month promotion, a Sky 30-day rolling offer, a Lebara 30-day renewal and a Lebara 12-month product are four different commitments.

Run five checks:

  1. Enough usable data. If you use about 8GB most months, compare plans that reliably cover that, not a 5GB plan against an unlimited one you don't need.
  2. Every known payment. Include first-month discounts, later step-ups, start-up costs and scheduled changes. Note any permitted but unquantified price changes separately.
  3. The same window. A 30-day renewal is not a calendar month, and a 24-month contract carries obligations even if you only look at its first year.
  4. Out-of-bundle spending. Count international calls, paid roaming periods and data add-ons you will actually need.
  5. Flexibility. Work out what happens if you move, spend months abroad or want to leave before a minimum term ends.

See live offers on Sky's selection and Lebara's selection. Check a listed minimum contract cost against the full scheduled payments at checkout, particularly on a Sky promotion with a later step-up. The displayed first-month rate multiplied by 24 is not a reliable substitute for a two-stage payment schedule. Do not treat a mismatch as proof of a tariff error without verifying the exact offer and its terms.

Example 1: a cheaper first year is not a cheaper 24 months

These are invented prices, not Sky or Lebara tariffs. Suppose two offers have enough data for the same buyer. The Sky-style offer is a 24-month agreement with a reduced opening price. The Lebara-style offer renews every 30 days at a fixed rate.

Hypothetical Sky-style 24-month offerHypothetical Lebara-style rolling offer
First 12 monthly payments12 × £6 = £72n/a
Next 12 monthly payments12 × £10 = £120n/a
Payments needed for uninterrupted cover throughout the 24-calendar-month window£192 (24 monthly payments)25 × £8 = £200 (25 renewals; 24 cover only 720 days)
Commitment24 months, with a possible cost to leave earlyNo 24-month commitment, but renewal and cancellation rules apply

On scheduled charges the Sky-style offer is £8 cheaper, before any further price change or extras. A 30-day renewal covers 30 days. Twenty-four renewals cover only 720 days, while a 24-calendar-month period lasts roughly 730–731 days depending on the dates. To stay covered throughout it, you would need a 25th renewal, which buys service beyond the end of the comparison window. If Sky raises its price, or international calls and roaming add costs, the saving can vanish. If Lebara's renewal price changes, the result changes too. Two shortcuts mislead: £6 × 24 = £144 ignores the second-year rate, and comparing 24 renewals of a 30-day price with a two-year calendar contract leaves the rolling plan short by ten days.

Example 2: when you only need flexibility for six months

A rolling option costs a hypothetical £9 every 30 days, and a 24-month contract starts at £7 a month. After six payments the rolling plan has cost £54 and the contract £42. That doesn't mean leaving the contract at six months costs £42, because a large remaining liability may apply. Paying a little more for flexibility can be the cheaper choice if you expect to move on. To compare 12-month and 24-month commitments fairly, calculate the payments made over the same first 12 months and state the 24-month customer's remaining contractual obligation. Do not call the first-year cash outlay the entire price of switching after a year.

What about Lebara's 12-month discount and no annual price rises?

Lebara sells discounted 12-month SIM-only products alongside flexible 30-day plans. A 12-month Lebara plan is not a cancel-anytime 30-day plan, so compare its minimum term, cancellation terms and payments with Sky's equivalent fixed-term offer. Lebara's no-annual-price-rise policy helps with budgeting, but it is not the same as a promotional discount ending on a stated date, and it doesn't cover every older or unrelated product.

Sky can apply scheduled promotional step-ups and price-change clauses, so read both separately. If stable payments matter most, our no-annual-price-rise SIM catalogue lists other eligible options.

Is Sky Piggybank better than a smaller Lebara plan?

It depends on whether you will use the saved data. On eligible capped-data plans, Sky saves unused data at the end of the billing period for up to 12 months. You can withdraw it later in whole 1GB steps, use it to top up an eligible SIM on the same account or swap it for eligible rewards. It isn't a pool of everyone's current-month data, and banked GB have no cash value.

Sky Unlimited Data plans don't add to Piggybank and can't receive top-ups, so judge an unlimited Sky SIM on price, coverage and features.

Lebara has no equivalent long-term bank on its ordinary SIM-only range. Its approach is to buy an allowance that suits your use at the lowest sensible total cost. If you often have spare GB but never need them later, a cheaper Lebara plan can beat paying extra to store data.

Example: six spare gigabytes

A customer on a capped Sky plan regularly uses 8GB of a 15GB allowance, leaving 7GB to bank in one eligible month. Months later they need 6GB extra and withdraw it, avoiding a bigger allowance or a paid top-up. That doesn't prove Piggybank saved money. If the Sky plan costs a hypothetical £3 more per period than a sufficient Lebara plan, twelve payments cost £36 more, so the banked data has to be worth more than that. One heavy month doesn't justify a year-round premium. Treat the data bank as a way to avoid a specific purchase, not as cash: if you would never have bought an add-on, the 6GB withdrawal produces no direct saving. If you would genuinely need an add-on, compare that real add-on cost against the extra you paid for Sky.

Does Sky Watch beat Lebara for streaming?

Only if you use eligible Sky apps in the UK on mobile data. Sky Watch doesn't count qualifying use against your normal Sky allowance. You need an active Sky Mobile data plan with at least 50MB available and a compatible device. Sky News is an example of an eligible app that does not require a paid Sky TV subscription, while premium Sky content may require one. Some advertising can still use data, Netflix, Prime Video and Spotify aren't covered, and Sky Watch is neither free access to paid Sky programmes nor a roaming benefit. If you use iCloud Private Relay, check Sky's app guidance: privacy routing can interfere with identifying eligible app traffic.

Lebara has no comparable exemption, which doesn't make it worse for someone who never uses those apps. If you mostly stream YouTube, Spotify or other third-party video, compare allowance and price. Both providers support tethering on eligible plans, and a laptop still needs a suitable data budget.

Think about your last month off Wi-Fi: would eligible Sky Watch traffic noticeably reduce the ordinary data you buy? If not, treat it as an extra and not a reason to accept a dearer or longer contract.

Which is better for international calls from the UK?

Lebara is often the better starting point for conventional calls from Britain to relatives or businesses abroad. It advertises international minutes with qualifying SIM-only plans, but the number of minutes, destination list, eligible networks and excess rates vary by product. Unlimited UK minutes don't mean unlimited calls to every country.

Sky charges normal out-of-plan rates for international calls unless you have a relevant benefit. It sells an optional paid International Saver add-on that discounts eligible international calls and texts, and the standard UK allowance doesn't include those destinations.

For example, if you call an overseas landline for 60 minutes a month and the out-of-plan rate is a hypothetical 20p a minute, that is £12 a month. If another tariff includes all 60 minutes, the difference could outweigh a modest gap in UK SIM prices. The 20p rate and the allowance are illustrative and don't describe a real country or bundle.

Before you choose, write down:

Start with Lebara's SIM deals. If calling abroad is your main reason to buy, Lebara's international-calling range is available through our affiliate link. It is a general information page and not proof of a particular allowance on the SIM you pick. For a wider country-by-country decision, see our international-calling SIM guide.

International calls are not roaming

Calling India, Poland or Nigeria while you are in the UK is international calling. Taking your UK SIM to another country is roaming. The two have separate allowances and rules: an international-minutes headline doesn't buy unlimited roaming data, and an included roaming destination doesn't make calls from the UK to that country free.

Which gives better roaming, Sky or Lebara?

Lebara usually wins for trips within its Roam Like Home destinations, provided your use fits its fair-use policy. Its official roaming finder currently includes qualifying EU/EEA destinations, India and Ukraine in Roam Like Home, generally up to 30GB of data or your smaller UK plan allowance, subject to destination and fair-use rules. This is a published list, not a guarantee that every call type, special number or country outside the scheme is included. Check the country in the operator's current finder before travel. Using your UK SIM abroad for long periods can trigger fair-use limits even in an included country.

Sky takes a different approach. Its pass, advertised in October 2026 as covering 120 destinations, generally costs £2 per qualifying 24-hour period in the applicable zone. A call, a text or more than 10MB of data can trigger it, and you aren't charged just for landing. Sky also publishes a roaming data fair-use limit, and some places are treated differently, including the Republic of Ireland. A Sky spend cap set to £0, or too low for the passes you intend to use, can prevent chargeable roaming from working. Background data use may trigger a pass, so check your phone settings before departure. Eligible Sky VIP Diamond customers may have the daily fee waived in qualifying destinations, and that doesn't extend to everyone with Sky TV.

Worked example: when roaming changes the winner

Suppose someone uses 14 chargeable 24-hour Sky pass periods on qualifying holidays. At £2, that is £28 in roaming fees. In an eligible Lebara Roam Like Home destination, within their allowances and fair-use terms, the extra roaming cost could be £0.

If the chosen Sky tariff costs a hypothetical £2 less a month, twelve months save £24 before travel. After 14 pass periods Sky is £4 more expensive (£28 charged, £24 saved). This is not a live quote or a rule for every destination, and a different country, customer status, trigger or number of travel days can reverse it.

If you rarely leave Britain, coverage and UK pricing will usually matter more. A traveller who visits only one or two qualifying countries should calculate actual chargeable days, not simply compare Sky's larger destination count with Lebara's included-zone count. If you often go to eligible European destinations or India, roaming becomes a major part of the decision. Our EU roaming SIM comparison covers wider alternatives.

What are the contract and price-rise differences?

Sky Mobile offers 30-day rolling pay-monthly SIMs alongside longer minimum terms. A rolling plan is not a prepaid bundle: it has renewal, notice and payment rules. Sky's 24-month plans may start with a lower charge followed by a scheduled step-up, and the terms can allow further changes. Sky Mix lets eligible customers adjust their data allowance, but it doesn't necessarily end the minimum term and can affect promotional eligibility.

Lebara sells flexible 30-day SIM-only plans and a separate 12-month discounted range. It advertises no annual price rises on its eligible SIMs and no conventional credit check for qualifying SIM-only sign-up. None of that turns a 12-month plan into a rolling 30-day one, or guarantees that a promotion will run forever. Identity, fraud, address and payment checks can still apply. A contract described as '30-day' also needs its actual notice and auto-renewal terms checked: a short billing period is not by itself proof that cancellation requires no action.

If a network suits you but the term doesn't, the right answer may be another plan from the same operator and not a switch of brand.

Which is easier for eSIM, 4G Calling and Wi-Fi Calling?

Both offer eSIM, but new-customer access isn't equal. Sky offers eSIM activation to eligible customers on compatible phones and plans. Lebara is rolling eSIM out in phases, and its official help page checked on 25 October 2026 says new-customer eSIM sign-up is restricted to the Apple iPhone Air, with separate arrangements for existing customers. Device availability can change, so don't assume an eSIM-capable Android or another iPhone qualifies for a new Lebara eSIM today.

That can settle the choice for a phone with no physical SIM slot. If you need eSIM straight away and your handset works with Sky but not with Lebara's new-customer route, confirm an eligible Sky plan before ordering Lebara.

Both networks' calling features need a compatible handset and configuration, and a phone with generic VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling isn't necessarily supported by every operator. If indoor signal is weak but your home Wi-Fi is solid, verify Wi-Fi Calling on your exact model before you move your main number. It helps inside the building and does nothing for weak outdoor reception.

Our UK eSIM deals cover several networks, while this page is about Sky against Lebara only.

Is Sky better for families or existing Sky TV customers?

For households with several eligible Sky SIMs, possibly. Unused data can feed a shared Piggybank on one account, which helps if one person often has spare data and another sometimes runs short. It isn't a discount on every SIM's monthly charge, and saved data can't move to unrelated accounts.

An existing Sky TV subscription can make Sky Watch more useful when you watch eligible content away from Wi-Fi. Being a Sky TV customer doesn't entitle you to a cheaper Sky SIM or to Sky VIP Diamond roaming, so check your own contract before assuming a household bundle beats several suitable Lebara SIMs.

If everyone uses little data, individually chosen cheap Lebara plans may cost less than paying a premium for a shared feature. If coverage differs between household members, a mixed-network setup may work better than keeping every number with one provider. Add up the full cost of each SIM before treating a shared account as a discount. Our family SIM-only comparison shows how to compare the total for several lines without treating Piggybank as an automatic price reduction.

Which should you choose?

Choose Sky Mobile if saved data or Sky apps have real value

Consider Sky first if O2 is reliable where Vodafone isn't, or if you have fixed-data plans with occasional heavy months and will actually redeem Piggybank GB. It also suits you if you often use eligible Sky apps in Britain and accept the subscription, advertising and minimum-data conditions. The plan still needs a sensible total cost and term.

Next step: compare Sky Mobile SIM-only deals. For an offer outside our selected cards, the wider Sky Mobile plans range is available through our affiliate link. It is the general Sky plans page, not a link to a specific data allowance.

Choose Lebara if international calling or included roaming dominates

Consider Lebara first if Vodafone coverage is better, you make conventional overseas calls or you often travel to its Roam Like Home countries. Its 30-day flexibility and no-annual-rise approach can matter more than long-term data banking, especially if you don't want a lengthy commitment.

Next step: compare Lebara SIM-only deals. Check the plan's international minutes, destination list, minimum term and checkout total, because allowances differ between plans.

Choose the cheaper suitable tariff if both networks work

If you seldom call abroad, travel little and wouldn't use Piggybank or Sky Watch, don't pay for features you won't use. Compare equal data allowances and every payment over the same window, plus any remaining minimum-term liability. A small gap in the headline monthly price is no reason to ignore the full schedule.

Choose a different network if neither works for you

If neither O2 nor Vodafone is dependable at home or work, widen your shortlist and don't settle for the less unreliable of the two. Compare selected SIM-only deals across networks or re-check Ofcom's coverage checker.

Already have a UK number?

You can normally keep it. Text PAC to 65075 from your current number and give the code to the new provider once the replacement SIM is ready. Text INFO to 85075 first if you want to check exit obligations. Don't cancel the old number before the port completes, and remember that switching doesn't clear remaining handset finance or early-termination charges. Test calls, SMS and data on the new SIM or eSIM before you rely on it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sky Mobile or Lebara better in the UK?

Sky is the better starting point if O2 reception is stronger or you will use Piggybank and eligible Sky-app streaming. Lebara is the better starting point if Vodafone reception is stronger, eligible international calls matter or you want included roaming in supported destinations. Compare the full contract cost, because neither is always cheaper.

Do Sky Mobile and Lebara use the same network?

No. Sky Mobile uses O2 and Lebara uses Vodafone. Coverage can differ by postcode, building and route, so check both on Ofcom's map before choosing a contract.

Which has cheaper SIM-only deals, Sky or Lebara?

Neither wins permanently. Sky's longer deals can have discounted first payments, later step-ups and possible price changes, while Lebara has 30-day renewals and separate 12-month offers. Compare equal data needs over the same period, including every known payment and any outstanding commitment.

Does Lebara include international calls while Sky does not?

Eligible Lebara SIM-only plans include selected international minutes, depending on country, number type and allowance. Sky's standard UK call allowance doesn't cover international calls, and discounted calling comes with its paid International Saver add-on. Check the destination and tariff before you pay.

Is Lebara roaming free while Sky charges £2 a day?

Lebara includes eligible Roam Like Home use in listed destinations, within fair-use and data limits. Sky generally charges for qualifying roaming-pass periods in many supported destinations, with exceptions by country and for Sky VIP Diamond customers. The answer depends on where you go and your account.

Can I save unused data on Sky or Lebara?

On Sky, eligible capped-data SIMs put spare data into Piggybank for up to 12 months, with 1GB withdrawals and account rules. Sky Unlimited doesn't earn Piggybank. Lebara's standard plans have no equivalent long-term data bank.

Does Lebara do credit checks?

Lebara advertises no conventional credit checks for eligible SIM-only sign-ups, though identity, fraud, payment and product-eligibility checks may still apply. Sky's pay-monthly joining checks and any device-finance requirements are different.

Which provider is better for eSIM?

Sky offers eSIM on compatible phones and eligible plans. Lebara's rollout is phased, and at the time of review new-customer eSIM was restricted to particular devices. Confirm your exact phone before buying, because eSIM hardware support alone isn't enough.

Can I leave after 30 days?

Only on a rolling 30-day plan. Sky sells rolling and longer-term products, and Lebara sells flexible 30-day plans and separate 12-month plans. Check the notice period, renewal and any minimum term on the specific contract.

Can Sky Piggybank and Sky Watch justify a higher price?

Yes, if you actually use them. Piggybank can reduce occasional extra-data purchases and Sky Watch can keep eligible Sky-app streaming out of your UK allowance. Neither produces cash savings automatically, and a cheaper suitable Lebara SIM can still win if you barely use them.

Verdict: coverage first, then the features you will use

Start with coverage: O2 for Sky or Vodafone for Lebara. Then put a realistic value on what separates them. Sky's Piggybank, shared data and eligible Sky-app streaming help some customers, while Lebara's international calls, included roaming and flexible SIMs help others. A slogan or a low introductory payment shouldn't decide it.

Compare Sky Mobile deals and Lebara deals side by side. Pick enough data for normal use, open Full plan details, check the full payment schedule and the calling or roaming rules, then use the card's View Deal button. Both brands are DealPriceCheck affiliate partners.
