Sky Mobile Review: Is It Worth Switching for SIM-Only?

Sky Mobile is a good fit if you want O2-based coverage, regularly have unused mobile data and are likely to use Sky Piggybank or Sky's app-streaming benefit. It is harder to recommend on price alone. Longer SIM-only contracts can look cheap but expose you to a lengthy commitment and possible price changes; roaming in many destinations costs extra. The right choice depends on your local O2 coverage, data use and the total cost of the plan.

Sky is not just a phone-contract company. It also sells SIM-only plans for people keeping an existing handset, with 30-day rolling and longer minimum-term options. Its extras are attractive, but the buying test is whether you will use them often enough to justify the specific plan and contract you choose.

If you already know you want Sky, compare current Sky Mobile SIM-only deals on DealPriceCheck. Our live cards show the data allowance, contract term, listed price and a tariff-specific View Deal route. For introductory offers, check the later payments and full minimum-term cost at Sky checkout, not just the first figure on a card. If you are still deciding, start with the trade-offs below.

Our verdict: shortlist Sky for its specific extras, rather than assuming a familiar TV brand delivers the cheapest mobile service. Anyone mainly seeking free EU roaming, a guaranteed fixed monthly price or a contract without a credit check should compare alternatives first.

What makes Sky Mobile different?

Most UK SIM-only deals compete on data, coverage, price and contract length. Sky adds three features that can genuinely alter what you need to buy: Roll, Mix and Watch.

Those extras are not equally valuable. If you never have spare data, barely open Sky apps and leave your allowance untouched, a cheaper ordinary SIM could deliver much the same everyday connection. If you watch Sky Go regularly on the move or share a mobile account with family members whose usage varies, Sky becomes more interesting.

The useful way to assess Sky is to compare what its extras would replace: a bigger data bundle, a one-off top-up, or regular video data use. They should not be treated as automatically equivalent to money back.

Is Sky Piggybank worth it?

Sky Piggybank is the most distinctive reason to consider the network. At the end of a billing period, unused data on an eligible limited-data plan is added to an account-level balance. You can later withdraw it to top up eligible SIMs, share it among eligible SIMs on your account, or exchange it for selected rewards.

The four rules that matter:

  1. Saved data lasts up to 12 months, not forever. Older balances expire even if you have accumulated newer GB. Older descriptions mentioning three years should not be used for a new buying decision.
  2. Withdrawals work in whole 1GB increments. Having less than 1GB spare does not mean you have a useful 1GB withdrawal ready.
  3. An Unlimited Data plan does not generate Piggybank data, and an unlimited SIM cannot be topped up from Piggybank. Previously saved data may remain available according to its existing expiry rules.
  4. Sharing happens within the same Sky Mobile account, not as a transfer to a friend on an unrelated account. Sky describes sharing with up to seven eligible SIMs on your account. That is not a transfer between separate customer accounts.

Example: save 8GB, then withdraw 5GB

Imagine a 20GB Sky SIM on which you use only 12GB in one billing period. 8GB remains. On an eligible plan, that 8GB goes into Piggybank.

Next month you unexpectedly need 25GB. Rather than automatically paying for a permanently larger bundle, you could use the regular 20GB allowance and withdraw 5GB from your saved balance as needed. You would have 3GB remaining in Piggybank, assuming no expiry or other withdrawal in between.

This is an illustration, not a promise about any particular current price. The actual saving depends on whether the smaller plan plus banking costs less than a larger plan, and on whether you would otherwise pay for extra data.

When the Piggybank sounds better than it is

If you keep banking 10GB every month but rarely withdraw it, you have not made a financial saving simply because the balance looks big. If you plan to leave Sky, use or redeem eligible saved data while you still have access; it is not a transferable balance with another operator. Some of it could expire after a year. The same applies to rewards: Sky may let you trade data for money off certain purchases, but saved GB are not cash, and the available reward and redemption value can vary.

For a broader comparison of different providers' expiry periods and rollover mechanics, see our UK data rollover SIM guide. That page compares the feature; this review tests whether it makes Sky worth choosing overall.

Is Sky Mobile coverage good on O2?

Sky Mobile uses O2's UK mobile infrastructure. Its customers can access O2-based 4G and 5G coverage, subject to availability, a compatible handset and the relevant account settings. You do not become a direct O2 retail customer: Sky sets its own pricing, support arrangements and perks.

The practical issue is your postcode and routine, not an impressive national population-coverage percentage. A network can cover almost everybody nationally and still have a weak indoor signal in your kitchen or poor performance on a particular railway route. Two phones in the same postcode may also differ because of the building, device, congestion and radio bands.

Before buying, use Ofcom's Map Your Mobile postcode checker and select O2. Review indoor and outdoor predictions and any available local performance estimates. If possible, test a real O2-based connection in your usual locations. Predictions are a guide, not a signal guarantee.

Sky's 5G service is included without a separate paid 5G tariff, but using it requires an eligible device, local coverage, the appropriate 5G setting and Sky's free 5G Network add-on. Sky also describes 5G+, a standalone 5G service, for a narrower set of compatible handsets, with eSIM and account requirements. Do not assume that any phone displaying a 5G icon is using 5G+.

An O2-hosted alternative might have similar underlying coverage but different benefits. Read who uses O2's network and why MVNO coverage and speed are not always identical before treating all O2-based offers as interchangeable.

Is Sky Mobile good value for SIM-only?

It can be — provided you compare the entire commitment. Sky currently markets both flexible 30-day rolling SIM-only plans and longer fixed-term options, with 24-month offers prominent in its range. The longer plan can have a lower headline monthly price, but that does not automatically make it cheaper for someone likely to leave soon.

On DealPriceCheck, Sky's current live SIM-only offers show the data allowance, listed price, contract type and links to full plan details. A card’s listed monthly price or minimum-cost field is not a substitute for the final payment schedule, especially when a promotion has different first-year and second-year rates. Select the Sky offer that fits you, then confirm every scheduled payment in the operator’s contract summary before ordering.

What a headline price may leave out

Price or contract detailWhy it matters
Introductory and later paymentsSome rolling promotions change after the first bill; some 24-month promotions change after the first 12 months.
30-day rolling vs 24-month minimumA rolling plan offers an earlier exit; a long contract usually commits you to many more payments.
Minimum contract costCalculate all scheduled instalments, including a known promotional step-up. Future discretionary price changes may still be outside that calculation.
Variable price clauseSky's longer-term wording permits price changes, including during the term unless a fixed-price arrangement is agreed.
Changing allowance or leaving earlyMix can affect promotional pricing without ending the minimum term; leaving a fixed-term SIM early may trigger charges.
Optional device creditA Sky handset loan is a separate obligation from the SIM airtime plan. SIM-only buyers do not need a handset loan.

The 24-month promotion trap: compare both years

Sky publishes SIM-only promotions in which a 24-month plan costs one amount for the first 12 months and a higher amount for the next 12. That higher second-year payment is part of the advertised offer schedule, not necessarily a future discretionary price rise. Sky also states that changing to another data allowance through Mix can mean losing the promotional rate.

For a hypothetical deal costing £10 a month for 12 months and £14 a month for the next 12, the scheduled 24-month spend would be £288, not £240 (24 × £10). An additional contractual price change, where permitted, could alter what you eventually pay. These figures demonstrate the calculation; they are not a quoted Sky tariff.

What you compareThe correct question
24-month promotional SIMWhat are months 1–12, months 13–24, any stated price-rise terms and the total of scheduled payments?
30-day rolling SIMWhat is the first payment, what does it renew at, and what notice is needed to stop?
Changing your Sky data allowanceWould the new plan remove the original introductory discount while leaving the commitment in place?

This distinction matters more than a headline saving of a few pounds: someone buying for a full two years can value the lower initial rate, while someone likely to leave soon should favour predictable flexibility.

A 30-day rolling plan is not the same as instant cancellation: Sky says its rolling option can be cancelled on 30 days' notice. A 24-month SIM normally has a much longer minimum commitment. If you expect to switch soon, compare what you would actually pay before leaving, not merely the cheaper per-month figure on the long contract.

Sky's ability to change your data allowance through Mix is helpful when usage varies, but it is not a free right to end a 24-month agreement. Choose a rolling plan for flexibility, or a longer plan only when the minimum-term commitment makes financial sense.

Can Sky change prices during a contract?

Yes. Sky's published 24-month plan terms allow price changes during the minimum term. Separate a scheduled introductory-price step-up from a later change made under the contract’s price-variation terms: they affect your total differently, and neither should be hidden behind the cheapest headline month.

Before signing, read the contract summary: does it show a known step-up, can another change be made, and what notice or exit right applies? A right to exit after a qualifying change is not the same as an unrestricted right to cancel a fixed-term agreement.

For the broader rules, read our UK SIM-only price rises guide. To purchase, return to the exact Sky deal cards, where the stated term and offer conditions are closer to the decision.

Sky Watch: what is included and what still uses data?

Sky Watch allows eligible streaming or use of supported Sky apps in the UK without drawing down the usual mobile-data allowance. Sky names apps including Sky Go, Sky Sports and Sky News.

This is particularly valuable if you already subscribe to qualifying Sky TV content and watch through the relevant Sky app while travelling or commuting. However, Sky Watch does not give you a free Sky TV subscription. Someone without Sky TV can still benefit from eligible free Sky app content, such as Sky News, but cannot assume paid sports or entertainment programmes are included.

The restrictions that can change your buying decision are:

Consider a person who watches several hours of Sky Go on the train each week. Watch may let them choose a smaller data bundle than they would need if every streamed GB counted. By contrast, someone whose screen time is mostly YouTube or TikTok would get much less value from the feature.

Buyer test: review your app-by-app mobile usage. If Sky apps genuinely account for a meaningful part of it, Sky Watch is commercially relevant. If not, do not pay a premium for it.

Is Sky Mobile roaming free, and what will a trip cost?

Many Sky Mobile customers must pay to use their allowances abroad in destinations covered by Roaming Passport Plus. Sky currently publishes a £2 charge per 24-hour period in eligible destinations, including many EU/EEA countries and countries further afield. The roaming allowance is also subject to a 25GB fair-use threshold per billing cycle and destination conditions. Sky may charge for usage above that threshold or restrict it under its fair-use policy, so unlimited UK data is not unlimited roaming data.

A seven-day trip could therefore add £14 if the pass is activated on each of the seven days. That is an illustrative calculation of the daily charge, not an assumption that Sky will always bill for every day of a trip. It is triggered by qualifying use, such as calls, texts or reaching the published data-use threshold. Avoiding chargeable use can prevent a pass being activated. Make sure any spending cap is high enough to allow a pass when you do want to use it, but low enough for your risk tolerance.

An important exception is Sky VIP Diamond. Sky publishes free roaming in eligible Roaming Passport Plus destinations for qualifying Diamond customers, subject to the applicable mobile-plan and fair-use conditions. Having Sky TV or broadband alone does not establish that you qualify: check your VIP tier and the current offer in your Sky account before relying on it.

If you regularly holiday in Europe, an alternative SIM with appropriate inclusive roaming may offer better value over the year even when Sky's UK monthly price appears lower. Compare SIM-only deals for EU roaming before joining Sky just for the headline bundle.

How to switch to Sky Mobile and keep your number

Moving to Sky is straightforward in principle: you can keep your existing mobile number using a PAC, or request a STAC if you do not want to keep it. You should still check the end date of your current agreement and whether leaving early could trigger a charge.

Before ordering, check three details that matter more than a generic star rating:

If you are ready to switch, compare current Sky Mobile plans and use the tariff-specific View Deal. If you are unsure about the transfer process, our guide to keeping your number explains PAC and STAC steps.

Is Sky Mobile better than Tesco Mobile, giffgaff or iD Mobile?

There is no universal winner. The competitors differ not only in price but in network, rollover, flexibility and travel features.

AlternativeWhy compare it with Sky?Where Sky may be strongerWhere to be cautious
Tesco MobileAlso uses O2 infrastructure; different incentives and contract choicesSky Piggybank and eligible Sky-app streamingCompare Tesco's current roaming terms and any Clubcard-dependent pricing before assuming Sky is better value
giffgaffAnother O2-based option, often chosen for straightforward online management and flexible bundlesLonger-term data banking and Sky household benefitsDon't pay for Sky extras you won't use; check the exact flexibility and renewal arrangement
iD MobileData rollover alternative on Three's infrastructurePiggybank can retain data longer than one-month rolloverSignal may be substantially different because the host network is different
1pMobile or Lyca Mobile (EE network)Another underlying network if O2 reception is weakPiggybank and eligible Sky-app viewingCompare an EE-hosted SIM when Sky’s local O2 coverage is unsuitable

This is a comparison of product models, not a static ranking of current tariff prices. Someone with reliable O2 coverage and three Sky-watching relatives on one account may value Sky highly. Another buyer, working in a building with unreliable O2 reception, should reject Sky even if Piggybank looks attractive.

To compare current costs, start with Sky Mobile plans and use each tariff’s View Deal to check its payment schedule. If O2 signal is unsuitable, use our SIM-only catalogue to compare other networks, including 1pMobile and Lyca Mobile on EE. This review establishes the fit; the catalogue provides the purchase route.

Who should choose Sky — and who should not?

Choose Sky Mobile if…

Your usage rises and falls. You work from home most weeks, then occasionally need extra mobile data; Piggybank could keep unused allowance available for later rather than immediately purchasing a larger plan.

You share an eligible Sky account with family. A common Piggybank can be more useful than separate unused balances — but sharing is within the account, not between any two Sky customers.

You regularly watch Sky apps in the UK. Watch may reduce the data allowance you need. Check that your content, device and usage qualify.

You already get good O2 service. Good coverage is the starting requirement; a generous feature set is irrelevant if calls or data fail indoors.

Look elsewhere first if…

You want straightforward free EU roaming. Sky's paid pass can make a superficially cheap deal expensive if you travel frequently.

You want to keep the option of leaving shortly. A longer Sky SIM-only contract may cost less per month but be a poor fit for uncertain circumstances; compare its rolling options and alternatives.

You are consistently a very heavy data user. Unlimited may be sensible, but you won't accumulate new Piggybank data on an Unlimited plan. Judge the actual unlimited price and conditions, not a rollover perk you cannot earn.

O2 is weak where you live. Another O2-based brand will not fix the underlying local signal. Check another network rather than merely changing its retail logo.

You need a no-credit-check product. Sky's pay-monthly ordering process is subject to credit and eligibility checks. Our no-credit-check SIM guide explains alternative products and their trade-offs.

Before you order: your Sky Mobile buying checklist

  1. Check coverage first. Look up O2 on Ofcom's coverage tool for your home and work; consider calls indoors, not just 5G outdoors.
  2. Check the whole contract cost. On the Sky Mobile provider page, distinguish 30-day rolling from 24-month plans, including any introductory first-year and higher second-year payments. A Mix change may remove a discount.
  3. Choose data based on use. Look at your last three bills or our mobile data guide. A larger allowance is not worth more simply because Piggybank exists.
  4. Count the extras you actually use. Piggybank works for eligible finite plans, Watch has conditions, and roaming can add charges. Ask whether those features change the cost for your household.
  5. Use the tariff-specific View Deal and read the final order summary. Check the full payment schedule, any promo expiry, minimum term, potential price rises, device compatibility, roaming and early termination before submitting payment details.

If you are transferring an existing number, text PAC to 65075 from your current network and provide the code when switching to Sky. If you do not wish to keep the number, the alternative code is STAC to 75075. An existing contract's early termination charges may still apply. Our number-switching guide covers the process and common mistakes.

Sky Mobile review: frequently asked questions

Is Sky Mobile any good?

Yes, for people with suitable O2 coverage who will use Piggybank, Sky-app streaming or the ability to change allowance. It is less compelling on price alone, especially if paid roaming or a long commitment outweighs those benefits.

Which network is Sky Mobile on?

O2. Sky Mobile is a virtual network using O2 infrastructure. Coverage depends on your location, handset and available technology. It does not mean every provider using O2 delivers the same service terms or customer support.

Does Sky Mobile include 5G and eSIM?

Sky supports both. You need a compatible handset and eSIM support for eSIM, and 5G requires compatible equipment, coverage and the relevant free network add-on. Sky 5G+ has additional eligibility requirements; do not confuse it with standard 5G.

Does Sky Mobile Piggybank work on Unlimited?

No. Unlimited Data plans do not add unused GB to Piggybank. Eligible limited-data plans can bank unused data for up to 12 months, with withdrawals in whole gigabytes. A banked balance is not cash and is not permanent.

Does Sky Mobile have 30-day SIM-only plans?

Yes, alongside 12- and 24-month options. A 30-day plan can have an introductory first payment followed by a higher renewal price and normally requires notice to cancel. The longer option may also have a lower first-year rate than its second-year rate. Compare the full schedule on our Sky Mobile deals page and at checkout.

Is roaming free with Sky Mobile?

Not for most customers. Roaming Passport Plus normally charges per 24 hours of qualifying use in eligible destinations, subject to a data fair-use limit. Eligible Sky VIP Diamond customers can receive free roaming under Sky’s current terms. Check your tier, destination and spend cap before travelling.

Is Sky Mobile good for families?

Potentially. Eligible SIMs on the same account can use shared Piggybank data, subject to the account limits and expiry rules. But separate accounts cannot simply pool data, and households should compare their combined bills against buying individually suitable tariffs.

Will Sky Mobile put its prices up during my contract?

Yes. Sky’s 24-month terms allow price changes during the agreement, and some promotions already specify higher payments after the first 12 months. Read both the scheduled instalments and the price-change and exit clauses. A rolling plan has different flexibility.

Can I keep my number when moving to Sky Mobile?

Yes. Ask your current network for a PAC by texting PAC to 65075, then give that code to Sky as part of the switch. The old provider can tell you about any remaining contractual charges.

Final verdict: are Sky Mobile SIM-only deals worth considering?

Sky is a feature-led choice, not an automatic cheapest-network choice. Its O2-based coverage, account-level data banking and eligible Sky-app streaming can make a smaller data allowance more useful. The strongest case is for households that can actually use those benefits without paying extra for features they ignore.

The trade-offs are important: Unlimited does not earn Piggybank data; roaming can add daily charges unless you qualify for an exemption; and a 24-month promotion can cost more in its second year while remaining a long-term commitment.

If O2's local signal works for you and those trade-offs are acceptable, compare current Sky Mobile SIM-only offers and follow the tariff-specific View Deal for the plan whose total cost and commitment make sense. If not, use our UK SIM-only comparison to find an alternative on a suitable network.
