International calls
Best SIMs for International Calls from the UK

For regular calls from the UK to numbers abroad, start by comparing Lyca Mobile and Lebara: selected plans include international minutes alongside UK data. If you already have an EE or Vodafone contract, an international calling add-on may be cheaper than switching. For just a few calls, paying the destination-specific rate — or using an internet calling app when both people are online — may cost less than buying an allowance.
The best SIM depends on the country, the type of number you call, your monthly minutes and the cost of the whole UK plan. A bundle advertising “100 international minutes” is no use if your destination is excluded. Here's how to choose without paying twice.

Which UK SIM is worth comparing first?
| Your calling pattern | Where to start | What could change the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Regular calls to an eligible overseas mobile or landline, plus everyday UK data | Lyca Mobile or Lebara bundled international minutes | Exact country/number eligibility, UK coverage, renewal price and any fair-use terms |
| Long conversations to a covered destination | A larger eligible Lyca international plan or Lebara allowance | Whether 200, 500 or another advertised amount applies to your country and number type |
| Frequent calls to Pakistan or another country missing from a standard allowance | A destination-specific package or an accurately priced alternative | Do not assume ordinary “international minutes” include that country |
| Already happy with Vodafone or EE | A compatible international calling add-on | Add-on's eligible destinations, renewal rules and total cost on top of the existing plan |
| A handful of calls, or calls to different destinations | Compare pay-per-minute rates and optional bundles; 1pMobile is one candidate | Individual call rates, minimum spend and any per-call/rounding rules |
| Both callers can use WhatsApp or a similar service | App-to-app calls over Wi-Fi or mobile data | Both parties need a compatible app and internet; this is not a call to an ordinary overseas phone number |
If you already know your destination and usually make the same calls each month, look at the relevant provider first. If not, spend two minutes checking the number and call duration before changing networks.
Check the country and the number before choosing a SIM
An overseas country name is not enough to establish that a call is included. Four checks prevent most expensive mistakes:
- The exact destination. International allowances are plan-specific; a list on one Lyca or Lebara product cannot automatically be applied to a different bundle.
- Mobile or landline. A package might include both, one category only, or exceptions for particular networks or prefixes. Premium-rate, satellite and specialist numbers may be excluded.
- How the allowance resets. A 30-day bundle and a calendar-month billing plan do not necessarily renew on the same dates. Check whether unused minutes disappear at renewal and whether extra minutes require credit or a bolt-on.
- The price when the allowance ends. Included minutes, out-of-bundle calling and promotional UK data can follow different rules. Check the rate, any connection charge and whether calls are billed in whole-minute increments before making a long call.
Lyca publishes international-minute country lists covering destinations such as India, Bangladesh, Poland, Romania, China and the United States on selected products, but these lists are not identical across every plan. Check any mobile-only or landline-only restriction as well. Pakistan should not be assumed to be in the standard allowance: a separate Pakistan-specific package may be needed. Lebara publishes an interactive destination and number-type checker. Neither company’s general advertising confirms what is included on the exact SIM you choose.
A useful test is to enter the number you call most — or at least its country code and whether it is a mobile — into the provider's current rate and inclusion information. Only compare prices once you've confirmed eligibility.
Lyca or Lebara: the most direct SIM-and-calling comparison
Both brands sell UK mobile service with international calling on qualifying plans, but their underlying networks differ. Lyca uses EE; Lebara uses Vodafone. The coverage that works in your kitchen or at work can outweigh a small monthly saving. And a “free minutes” claim means minutes included within the paid plan, not unlimited calling worldwide.
Lyca Mobile: useful when the right country is in the bundle
Lyca advertises 100 international minutes on various ordinary UK bundles, while separate international-focused packages can offer different amounts and destination lists. Its standard bundles should not be treated as its entire international-calling range. Different Lyca pages may describe a prepaid 30-day product or a pay-monthly agreement; check which payment model you are choosing, its commitment and its later price.
For calls to an eligible country, compare Lyca Mobile's international-calling plans with the current UK-data offers on our Lyca SIM-only deals page. A card showing attractive UK data does not, by itself, confirm the number of included minutes to your country. If you exceed your allowance, check Lyca's out-of-allowance international rates.
Best reason to shortlist Lyca: the specific bundle covers the people you call, EE coverage is suitable, and its full sequence of payments beats the alternatives. Don't choose it solely on an advertised international-minute count.
Lebara: compare the included destination before comparing GB
Lebara's official international-calling information says its SIM-only range includes calls to more than 50 countries, with 100 minutes on some plans and 500 on others. Standard eligible mobile and landline calls are included, but exclusions and premium-number rules still matter. A higher UK data allowance does not automatically mean more overseas minutes: check the relevant Lebara product.
Start with our Lebara SIM-only deals to compare contract length and current UK-data prices, then use Lebara's international-calling destination checker for the number you actually ring. Those are two separate decisions — UK SIM value and overseas-call entitlement.
Best reason to shortlist Lebara: its eligible allowance covers your regular calls, Vodafone coverage is strong where you need it, and its complete cost is competitive. A 500-minute tier can be valuable to a heavy caller, but only if those minutes work for the destination in question.
If both providers cover your number, our Lebara vs Lyca comparison goes deeper into coverage, roaming and payment differences. This guide focuses on choosing the right international-calling arrangement, rather than repeating that head-to-head review.
What about Vodafone, EE and 1pMobile?
These can be sensible solutions, especially if you already have a UK SIM that works well. They are not interchangeable with a bundle that includes overseas calls.
| Provider | How international calls are typically paid for | When it deserves a closer look |
|---|---|---|
| Vodafone | Separate eligible International Saver or Call Abroad Extras, or out-of-bundle rates | You are already with Vodafone and can add calls without replacing your domestic plan |
| EE | Eligible international calling add-ons or applicable out-of-bundle rates | Your existing EE contract works for you and the add-on covers the destination |
| 1pMobile | Destination-specific calls deducted from credit; standard Boosts do not include international calling minutes | Your calls are infrequent enough that paying per minute is competitive |
As checked on 21 October 2026, Vodafone's official Extras page listed International Saver 100 at £6.95 a month and Saver 500 at £14 a month, with calls to 100 listed destinations. These are additional monthly charges, not the price of a Vodafone SIM. They renew automatically until cancelled, and the relevant Vodafone plan and destination must qualify. Vodafone also has different Call Abroad Extras, which should not be confused with Saver. EE publishes pay-monthly international calling add-on terms; account and plan eligibility differ, and EE's PAYG options have separate rules.
1pMobile says its Boosts include no international call allowance: international calls use account credit at destination-specific rates. This can be a good fit for someone who calls abroad for only a few minutes, but there is no universal point, such as 100 minutes, beyond which it becomes cheaper or dearer than Lyca or Lebara. The rate and SIM cost decide that. Compare the UK bundle in our 1pMobile deal listings, then check 1pMobile's official destination-specific calling rates before choosing.
For a buyer making calls to several countries, calculate the cost of each destination separately: a bundle may cover some numbers but charge for others. A small number of overseas calls is not, on its own, a reason to switch away from a provider with reliable UK coverage. Equally, staying put is not automatically good value if you regularly buy expensive add-ons.
What is the real monthly cost of calling abroad?
Compare the entire arrangement: UK SIM cost + eligible calling add-ons + calls outside the allowance. If you already have a SIM, compare the extra cost of keeping it against the full cost and commitment of switching, rather than counting a phone bill you would pay in either case twice.
Consider this hypothetical comparison. Both options provide enough UK data; 20p a minute is an illustrative overseas rate, not a quote from any operator:
| Monthly calling to one eligible destination | UK SIM at £7 + calls at 20p/min | UK SIM at £12 with 100 included eligible minutes |
|---|---|---|
| 10 minutes | £9 | £12 |
| 50 minutes | £17 | £12 |
| 100 minutes | £27 | £12 |
| 150 minutes | £37 | £12 plus the charge for 50 extra minutes |
For 0–100 minutes, the second plan becomes cheaper once you exceed 25 minutes under these assumptions: its £5 higher monthly price is offset by avoiding more than £5 of call charges. At exactly 25 minutes, they cost the same. Above the allowance, you need the second provider's actual excess-minute rate to complete the comparison; the table deliberately does not invent it.
This is why an expensive-sounding bundle can be good value for someone with family calls every evening, while an ordinary UK plan can win for someone who only calls abroad occasionally. It also shows why a cheap first payment or a long minimum term can distort a monthly-only comparison: calculate all payments over the period you intend to keep the SIM, including any price changes and early-exit obligations.
How to compare a destination-specific package fairly
Some countries are poorly served by standard international-minute allowances. In that situation, compare a specialist calling package with the alternative of retaining your UK SIM plus a second SIM or another calling service. If you would need two subscriptions, add both charges. If the recipient is reachable on an app over Wi-Fi, an internet-to-internet call can avoid conventional international voice charges, though mobile-data use and the other person's access still matter.
Do not buy a generic international bundle expecting it to cover a country omitted from its list. This is particularly important for Pakistan and for the exact number types covered in any separately advertised country package.
Calls to India, Pakistan and Poland: where to go next
Country-specific pricing belongs in a country-specific comparison. The broad guide should help you select the method of calling, while these guides examine individual destinations and relevant tariff conditions.
| You call | The decision that matters | Detailed DealPriceCheck guide |
|---|---|---|
| India | Whether your exact plan covers Indian mobiles and landlines, and any separate India limits on larger or “unlimited” offers | Calling India from the UK |
| Pakistan | Whether a separately sold Pakistan bundle is needed; a general international-minutes label is insufficient | Calling Pakistan from the UK |
| Poland | Bundled calls from the UK versus EU roaming when you travel; these are different benefits | Calling Poland from the UK |
For calls to China (+86), check the eligible number types on the exact package before buying; the general UK-minute allowance does not settle that question. For calls to other countries, apply the same test: eligible destination, number type, expected minutes, normal UK data needs and the full payment schedule. Do not extrapolate a rate quoted for India to Nigeria, Bangladesh, Ukraine or any other country.
International calling, roaming and app calls are different
International calling means ringing an overseas telephone number while you are in the UK — for example, calling a +48 Polish number from London. Roaming means using your UK SIM while you are physically outside the UK, such as during a trip to Poland. A plan including EU roaming does not automatically include calls from Britain to every European number, and an international calling allowance does not automatically give you free data abroad.
What if the person is abroad but still has a UK number? If you ring their ordinary +44 UK mobile number from the UK, it is normally treated as a UK-number call on your tariff, not as a call to the country they are visiting. The person receiving it may have separate roaming conditions. Conversely, dialling a foreign +country-code number from Britain is an international-number call even if its owner happens to be in the UK. Check any unusual number type or call-routing service with your provider.
An app-to-app voice call, such as WhatsApp to WhatsApp, uses an internet connection rather than ordinary international mobile voice minutes. If both people have the app, it may avoid a per-minute charge over Wi-Fi. Your mobile provider's Wi-Fi Calling, however, is still a normal phone call and does not automatically turn overseas-number calls into free app calls. Dialling an ordinary number through a paid app-to-phone service can also carry its own rate.
If your real need is using data while travelling, use our SIM deals with EU roaming instead. This page is about calling other countries from the UK.
Questions people ask before switching
What is the best UK SIM for calling abroad?
For regular eligible overseas calls alongside UK data, compare Lyca Mobile and Lebara first. If you already have an EE or Vodafone SIM, check your account’s international add-ons before switching. The best choice depends on the destination and number type, minutes used, total payments and UK coverage.
Are international calls included in unlimited UK minutes?
Generally no. “Unlimited UK calls” refers to eligible domestic numbers. International numbers normally require their own included allowance, a compatible add-on or charges from credit. Check the specific plan.
Is Lyca or Lebara cheaper for international calls?
There is no reliable all-country winner. Compare the exact number type, destination, included minutes, renewal cost and UK network. Lyca uses EE and Lebara uses Vodafone, so signal quality can also settle the choice.
Do international-minute bundles include Pakistan?
Not automatically. A standard allowance may exclude Pakistan even when the same provider sells a separately priced Pakistan package. Check the exact package's destination and number-type list before ordering.
Is a second SIM worth having just for international calls?
It can be if a destination-specific calling bundle costs less than replacing your main UK plan, especially when your current signal and UK allowance already suit you. Check that your phone supports a second physical SIM or eSIM, and compare both ongoing payments, not just the second SIM’s headline price.
Can I keep my UK number if I switch for international calls?
Usually yes. Request a PAC from your current UK provider by texting PAC to 65075, then give the code to your new provider to transfer the number. Check any remaining contract commitment first. If you only need a second SIM for calling, you may not need to move your main number at all.
