International calling guide

Best SIM for Calling India from the UK

For ordinary calls from the UK to Indian mobiles or landlines, compare Lyca Mobile and Lebara before you pay per minute. Both sell UK SIM-only plans with international calling allowances that can include India. Lyca is worth examining first when you need a larger India-eligible voice allowance, while Lebara is a strong alternative if Vodafone reception is better for you or its plan covers your calls and UK data more economically. Neither is automatically the cheapest for every caller.

If most of your conversations already happen on WhatsApp over Wi-Fi, changing your SIM only for India calls may save you nothing. The first decision is whether you need to dial an ordinary Indian telephone number, how long you talk and what you pay for the whole UK service — not a headline promising "free international minutes".

Buying route: Use the live Lyca and Lebara cards on this page to compare UK data, prices, promotional renewals and contract length. Full plan details may not list India calling minutes. Choose View Deal to inspect the actual provider offer and its destination terms before paying: India must be included for your mobile or landline number, with enough eligible minutes. If that cannot be confirmed, do not assume the card includes India calling.

What kind of India call do you need to make?

A daily call to a parent on an ordinary mobile number is a different purchase from an occasional call to an Indian bank, or to a relative who does not have internet access.

This page is about calling India while you are in the UK. If you are travelling to India, jump to the roaming distinction, because the terms are different.

Lyca or Lebara: where do the India-specific differences appear?

Both brands offer UK data and calls alongside eligible international minutes, but the number of India minutes is a product term, not a promise from the operator as a whole. Their host networks also differ, since Lyca uses EE infrastructure and Lebara uses Vodafone. If you have weak indoor coverage, that difference may outweigh a slightly cheaper headline price.

Lyca: a clearer route when your call volume grows

Lyca's published bundle information, reviewed for this guide on 22 October 2026, shows how allowances step up. Some entry plans offer 100 eligible international minutes, All In One 10 specifies 200, All In One Plus 15 specifies 500, and All In One Plus 20 advertises unlimited eligible international minutes with India listed as a destination. The last offer remains subject to fair-use terms and eligible-number restrictions. These are dated examples of product features, not a promise of today's price, stock or your checkout eligibility.

Do not buy a huge UK data allowance just to get more India minutes. Someone who uses little UK data but makes 250 minutes of conventional India calls may need a different voice tier from a person who uses 50GB of mobile data and makes no international calls. Check whether an eligible international calling add-on would be cheaper over your actual billing cycle than moving to a larger bundle.

Compare current Lyca SIM deals for live UK prices, allowances and commitment. Our catalogue does not reliably identify India-minute entitlements on each card; use View Deal and the exact provider product terms to confirm those before paying.

Lebara: what is the India rule on the exact high-usage plan?

Lebara advertises international calling to more than 50 destinations on its SIM-only range. Its standard product examples include 100 or 500 international minutes, and some products advertise an unlimited international allowance. The word "unlimited" can hide an India-specific exception, though.

Important exception: Official Lebara product pages reviewed on 22 October 2026 give 1,000 minutes to India alongside an "unlimited international minutes" description on certain 30-day products. This is not only a condition on a 12-month contract, and it does not mean every 30-day or 12-month Lebara plan has 1,000 India minutes. Match the precise product title and its country-specific terms before you rely on the allowance.

That matters if you talk to India for an hour every evening. An hour a night across 30 days is 1,800 minutes. A 1,000-minute India allowance would not cover that use, even if the headline advertises "unlimited international" calling. Check the out-of-bundle route and do not assume excess calls are free.

Compare current Lebara SIM deals and use Full plan details for the payment and commitment. Then use View Deal to check the specific plan’s India allowance and what happens when it runs out; the catalogue does not consistently show these terms.

Which advertised plans have documented India allowances?

These are operator-published product examples reviewed on 22 October 2026, not a ranking of the currently available DealPriceCheck cards. Do not assume a similarly priced or similarly sized live plan is the same product.

Lyca All In One Plus 15500 minutesIndia is on its published destination list

Lebara Unlimited Plus, 30-day productUnlimited international minutes plus 1,000 minutes to IndiaThe India allowance is not unlimited, despite the broader headline

The examples are not a guarantee that these exact product IDs appear in our live feed. Matching by the number of gigabytes alone is unsafe. If you see a different name on a card, verify its own India terms rather than transferring the allowance from this table.

For a wider comparison of the two operators on domestic coverage, roaming and support, not on this one destination, read Lebara vs Lyca Mobile.

The live cards below show selected UK SIM offers from our catalogue, not an India-minute-qualified shortlist. They may include products with names and allowances different from the official examples above. Check the current and later price, then verify the selected product’s India destinations, ordinary mobile/landline eligibility, minute cap and out-of-bundle charge in its provider terms before paying. A SIM card appearing here alone proves none of those calling benefits.

Selected providers — not whole of market. Each card shows its own last verified date. Prices and availability can change; check the provider’s website before purchase.

If your priority is a conventional India call and not maximum UK data, it is reasonable to choose a smaller qualifying bundle over a deal with a better price per gigabyte. That metric says nothing about the cost of reaching an Indian number.

What does an India call add to your UK mobile bill?

The cheapest-looking UK SIM can be the wrong choice if it charges for each international minute. Compare the full cost over the same period:

Total cost = UK SIM payments + India calling charges or add-ons + any other required fees.

Here is a hypothetical calculation, not a price quote for Lyca, Lebara or any other operator. It compares two SIMs meeting exactly the same UK data needs in one payment period.

Plan APlan B
UK SIM charge£5£8
Included eligible India callsNone100 minutes
Extra India rate assumed for this example10p/minNot needed within allowance
Total with 20 minutes to India£7£8
Total with 60 minutes to India£11£8
Total with 100 minutes to India£15£8

At an assumed 10p a minute, 30 minutes is the break-even point: 30 × £0.10 = £3, exactly the extra SIM charge. Below that Plan A costs less, and above it Plan B costs less, provided the Indian number is eligible and there are no other charges. That is why "best for calling India" cannot be decided by sorting SIMs from the lowest monthly sticker price.

The result changes if calls are rounded up by the minute, there is a connection charge, your rate varies by number type, or the included minutes are shared with calls to other countries. Use the actual price and terms shown for the selected package, not the illustrative figures above.

How many minutes do you need: 200, 500 or 1,000?

For regular calls, the cost of the next eligible minute matters more than the number of countries in an advertisement. At 200 minutes, compare a matching larger bundle with a basic one plus an add-on. At 500 minutes, compare the actual price of a qualifying 500-minute product against repeated extras. At 1,000 minutes or more, check what any "unlimited" product actually includes for India and whether its acceptable-use policy fits your pattern.

Remember that 100 international minutes are generally a shared pool across eligible destinations, not 100 separate minutes each for India, Pakistan and Poland. A household that calls several countries can use the pool far faster than expected. If you regularly call several countries, our wider international-calling SIM guide covers that different buying decision.

Why are 30-day charges not twelve identical calendar months?

If a bundle renews every 30 days, twelve renewals cover only 360 days. Staying connected across 365 days may mean paying for a thirteenth bundle, part of which covers days after that anniversary. An illustrative £8-per-30-day service needs 13 purchases costing £104 to keep coverage across that period, while a genuine £8 calendar-month subscription normally takes 12 payments totalling £96. No hidden fee is implied, because the renewal calendar is simply different.

Do not apply this calculation to a 12-month contract automatically. Its minimum commitment, payment schedule and early termination terms must be assessed as the specific product describes them, and an attractive first-payment promotion should not be multiplied across the whole year unless it lasts that long.

What does "India included" mean for the number you dial?

An India country badge is a starting point, not a guarantee that every reachable number is free. Before you order, separate three cases.

An ordinary Indian mobile is the most relevant for calls to relatives. Check that standard mobile numbers are covered by the exact allowance. A recipient on Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL may have a normal mobile number, but do not infer eligibility from the network brand alone.

An ordinary Indian landline needs its own check, because a plan may include landlines or only mobiles. If you phone an older relative at home or an office landline, this can be decisive.

A special or premium number, such as a short code, premium service, unusual range or forwarded call, can be excluded or billed separately even if India is an included destination. A bank, helpline or business switchboard may not use the same number type as a family mobile, so check the rate for the full number before you place a long call.

To dial India from a UK mobile, use +91 followed by the Indian mobile's 10 digits, or the area code and subscriber number for a landline. If the landline's area code is written with an Indian domestic leading 0, leave that trunk prefix off after +91. You can generally use 00 91 instead of +91. Correct dialling helps the call connect, but it does not change your plan's eligibility or price.

Can coverage decide a close price comparison?

Yes. Lyca uses EE's UK network and Lebara uses Vodafone's. If both packages have enough eligible India minutes, compare reception where you actually take long calls, such as your kitchen, workplace, commute or student accommodation. A cheap plan with unreliable indoor calls will not deliver the saving you expected.

Use Ofcom's mobile coverage checker to check predicted indoor and outdoor coverage for the underlying networks. The map is a prediction, not a call-quality test in your building, and network-sharing arrangements do not mean all branded services and features are identical. If the EE and Vodafone choice is unfamiliar, browse our EE-network SIM catalogue and Vodafone-network catalogue for context.

For long calls indoors, check whether Wi-Fi Calling works on your specific phone and plan. That is separate from WhatsApp: Wi-Fi Calling may support conventional calls through the operator, while WhatsApp uses an app-to-app internet connection. Neither should be assumed available just because the host network supports it.

Do you need to replace your existing SIM?

For some India callers the sensible answer is to keep the plan they already have. Switching only to claim an international allowance can cost more if you rarely use it, already have a paid contract or can reach the recipient through an internet app.

What if your family member uses WhatsApp or another calling app?

If both ends can use WhatsApp, Signal or a similar service over Wi-Fi, there is normally no separate conventional UK-to-India voice charge. Mobile data may still count against a plan allowance, and both people need a working internet connection. That is often sensible for long daily family conversations. If the recipient only has an ordinary Indian mobile or landline, some app-to-phone calling services can still dial that number for a separate charge. Compare their real per-minute or credit costs with an eligible SIM bundle; an ordinary app-to-app call cannot reach a number that does not use the app.

What if you are still within a UK mobile contract?

Check whether your present provider has an India-specific calling add-on and calculate its cost on top of your existing plan, instead of comparing only the add-on price with a new SIM. Changing operators before your minimum term ends may trigger early termination charges. If the current plan otherwise works well, a verified add-on can be a better short-term choice even when a new SIM would be cheaper after your contract finishes.

Should you buy a second SIM for India calls?

A second UK calling SIM can separate family calls from your main number. It can work on a dual-SIM phone, or with a physical SIM plus an eSIM if your phone and chosen provider support the combination. Two active subscriptions mean two renewal schedules, so the second line makes financial sense only when the calling savings justify it.

How do you keep your number if you move to Lyca or Lebara?

Text PAC to 65075 from the number you want to keep, then give the code to your new provider. Ofcom says the code lasts 30 days and a normal transfer must be completed within one working day after the new provider receives it. Review early exit costs and do not cancel your old number first. See our number-switching guide or Ofcom's mobile switching guidance.

Calling India from the UK is not India roaming

An allowance for dialling +91 while you are in Britain is not permission to make unlimited calls, texts or use unrestricted data while you are physically in India. That is roaming, and its rules are set separately.

On eligible Lebara SIM plans, India appears in its Roam Like Home arrangements, subject to plan-specific fair use and a data allowance capped at up to 30GB rather than an automatic extra 30GB. Lebara says a new SIM must be activated in the UK before travelling; otherwise roaming may not work. Confirm which calls, texts and data use are included in the exact plan. On Lyca's published All In One Plus 15 terms, India roaming is expressly data-only, with voice calls and texts needing separate PAYG credit, and other Lyca packages can have different allowances. Neither benefit says that a UK-to-India voice allowance can be used freely in the opposite direction.

If travel is the real reason you are shopping, compare the exact providers' India-specific roaming terms rather than choosing an ordinary UK international-calling bundle by its international minutes alone. Our EU roaming comparison addresses a different destination-specific question.

Which India-calling SIM should you choose?

Choose between Lyca and Lebara on a small eligible allowance when you already need a UK SIM and your calls comfortably fit the plan's India minutes. Check EE against Vodafone signal and the actual renewal price before you treat the two as equal.

Look more closely at Lyca's larger international bundles if you need several hundred conventional India call minutes per period. Its published range offers 200-minute, 500-minute and eligible unlimited-international examples, but availability, fair use and the selected product matter.

Compare Lebara's specific India-minute cap if its higher-tier product advertises unlimited international calling. The operator has documented 1,000 minutes to India on selected 30-day products, which is not unlimited India calling and does not apply to all its plans.

Keep your current SIM or use a second calling service if international calls are occasional, you face exit costs or you mostly call over Wi-Fi apps. Paying for voice minutes you do not use is not a saving.

When a live card has the right UK data and payment terms, open Full plan details for the recorded conditions and View Deal for the actual provider offer. Do not pay until India minutes are confirmed for that exact product. Compare Lyca Mobile and Lebara through our catalogue instead of another comparison site.

Calling India from the UK: common questions

Which UK SIM is best for calling India regularly?

Start with a qualifying Lyca or Lebara plan if you need calls to ordinary Indian numbers and also need a UK SIM. Compare the actual India-minute allowance and renewal cost: the operator examples above show 200, 500 and conditionally unlimited on Lyca, but a particular Lebara 30-day unlimited-international product specifies 1,000 to India. Your exact product, signal and number type decide the winner; catalogue data alone is insufficient proof.

Are calls to India free on Lyca or Lebara?

Eligible calls can be included within a paid SIM package instead of charged per minute until the allowance runs out. That is not free in the literal sense, and a call outside the package's rules, or beyond a specific India cap, may cost extra.

Are Lebara's unlimited international minutes unlimited to India?

Not necessarily. Lebara's published terms for some 30-day products distinguish unlimited eligible international minutes from 1,000 minutes to India. Check the exact selected product and do not apply that cap to every Lebara package.

Does Lyca have unlimited calls to India?

Lyca's published All In One Plus 20 lists India among the destinations for its advertised unlimited eligible international allowance. The offer remains subject to fair use, excluded numbers, product eligibility and the current terms, so it is not an unconditional unlimited calling service.

Can I call an Indian landline from a UK SIM?

Yes, but whether the call comes out of an included allowance depends on the provider, the selected package and the number type. Standard Indian landlines may qualify where specified, while premium, short-code or non-standard services may be treated differently. Dial +91 and the landline's area code without its domestic leading zero.

How do I call an Indian mobile from the UK?

Dial +91 followed by the ordinary ten-digit Indian mobile number. From a UK landline you can dial 00 91 instead of +91. This is a numbering instruction only and does not establish the call charge.

Can I keep my UK mobile number if I switch?

Yes. Text PAC to 65075 from your existing UK number and give the code to the new provider, and do not cancel the line yourself before the transfer if you want to keep it. Existing contract charges may still be due.

Is an India calling allowance the same as India roaming?

No. Calling an Indian number while in the UK and using a UK SIM while in India are separate services with different allowances. Check roaming data, outgoing calls, texts and fair-use conditions if you will travel.

Buy the SIM that gives you enough eligible India calls and usable UK coverage for the lowest cost over the time you intend to keep it, which is not necessarily the cheapest first payment or the biggest data bundle.
