International calling guide
Best SIM for Calling Pakistan from the UK: Which Option Costs Less?
Quick answer: if you regularly call Pakistani mobile numbers or landlines from the UK, start by comparing a Pakistan-specific calling bundle, especially one from Lyca Mobile, against the cost of calling Pakistan on your existing SIM. Lyca advertises dedicated Pakistan products, but its ordinary UK SIM-only deals do not automatically include Pakistan minutes. For occasional calls, pay-per-minute calling can be more economical. And if both people can use WhatsApp over Wi-Fi, you may not need paid international voice minutes at all.
The best choice depends on who you call, how often you call, and whether you need UK mobile data too. A tariff with cheap UK data is not necessarily a cheap way to reach a +92 number. Below, we separate these costs and show exactly what to check before buying.
Looking for a Pakistan calling bundle rather than an ordinary UK SIM? Explore Lyca's international plans and check whether a Pakistan-specific product is available for your number. The UK SIM comparison below is useful for data and domestic calls, but does not certify Pakistan minutes.
How should you call Pakistan: bundle, add-on, second SIM or app?
You could pay for an international bundle, keep your present SIM and buy an add-on, use a second SIM for calls, or make internet-based calls instead. These are not interchangeable purchases.
| What your calls look like | Compare first | What can make it a poor choice? |
|---|---|---|
| Frequent calls to Pakistani mobiles or landlines | A Pakistan-specific voice allowance | The recipient's number may be excluded, or you may pay for unused UK features |
| Frequent Pakistan calls and regular UK data | A specialist bundle that includes both | A calling-only bundle may require a second data plan |
| A few ordinary telephone calls per month | PAYG international rates on a suitable SIM or calling service | Connection fees, rounding and top-up expiry can outweigh the rate |
| You like your current UK plan and number | An eligible international add-on or a second calling SIM | A second line means another balance/renewal to manage |
| Both people mainly use smartphones and Wi-Fi | WhatsApp or another app-to-app voice service | It cannot dial every ordinary Pakistani landline or mobile without a separate paid calling service |
The decision rule: first establish whether you need a conventional phone call to a Pakistani number. Only then compare plan prices. This avoids buying international minutes you never use or a UK data offer that doesn't include the calls you need.
Is a Pakistan calling bundle the same as an international SIM?
An operator may advertise international minutes while listing only certain destinations. Pakistan can be included in a specialist product and absent from an ordinary bundle offered by the very same company. Some international allowances cover standard landlines and mobiles; others apply only to particular destinations, networks or number types.
Before buying, match these four details to the exact product:
- Origin: calls must be included when placed from the UK.
- Destination: Pakistan, not simply a broad label such as “40+ countries”.
- Recipient: standard Pakistani mobile or landline, plus any exclusions for special, premium or routed numbers.
- Usage: available minutes, expiry, call rounding, additional charges and renewal settings.
A Pakistani mobile number normally begins `03` when written domestically. From the UK you use +92 and drop the initial zero. A domestic number beginning `03…` therefore becomes +92 3…. This is a dialling rule, not proof that the call falls within your bundle.
Lyca Mobile: what is the difference between Pakistan Plan and Pakistan Plus?
Lyca is particularly relevant because it has advertised Pakistan Plan, Pakistan Plus S and Pakistan Plus M as separate products. Their purpose differs even though the names sound similar:
| Lyca product to inspect | What makes it relevant | What to confirm before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Pakistan Plan | A Pakistan-focused voice bundle, useful if you already have a UK data SIM | Whether the current product includes any UK data, which Pakistan numbers qualify and whether you are eligible |
| Pakistan Plus S | Combines Pakistan calling with a smaller UK data and domestic-calling allowance | Both the Pakistan minutes and the usable UK allowance on the exact offer |
| Pakistan Plus M | Combines Pakistan calling with a larger UK allowance | Whether the additional UK data and domestic minutes are worth the higher total cost |
These are product types to compare, not fixed tariff quotations. The live offer pages control current prices, minutes, availability and eligibility; do not transfer an allowance from one named product to another.
That creates two genuinely different buying decisions:
You already have a UK SIM you like. A calling-focused Pakistan bundle might be sufficient as a second line, without buying extra UK data you won't use. Check whether your phone supports two active SIMs and which line is set to make outgoing calls.
You want one SIM for everything. Compare a Pakistan-inclusive product with useful UK data and domestic calling against the total price of your current UK plan plus a separate calling service. Look at UK network reception as well as international minutes; Lyca uses EE's underlying UK network.
The Lyca international-plan selection linked above is not a guaranteed direct checkout for any particular Pakistan bundle. Confirm its product and number eligibility before ordering. For everyday UK data, compare our current Lyca SIM-only listings and use an individual plan's Full plan details before View Deal.
Important purchase detail: the Pakistan product pages carry new-customer eligibility restrictions and a deadline for activating an ordered SIM. Some pages also show a text-code route for existing customers; that does not establish that an existing customer can obtain the same online promotional terms. The Pakistan Plus conditions describe 30-day validity and automatic renewal, so check renewal settings and any out-of-allowance rate before ordering. International minutes do not cover premium, short-code or other excluded numbers.
Talk Home Mobile: when is a Pakistan calling plan worth comparing?
Talk Home Mobile also advertises Pakistan-specific international plans. That makes it a more direct comparator for this particular purpose than a random cheap UK SIM. But “Talk Home” can mean a mobile SIM, a country pack, app-based calling or a calling card. Their charges, expiry rules and included UK services need not match.
If a Talk Home offer includes a Pakistan calling allowance, compare its cost against a similarly eligible Lyca specialist product over the same period and for the same Pakistani number type. Don't compare a calling-only pack with an entire UK mobile package as if their prices bought equivalent service. If a prepaid calling account requires top-ups or deducts an access charge, include those too.
If UK data is a separate requirement, our SIM-only catalogue helps price that part of the choice. Its ordinary plan cards do not establish Pakistan calling eligibility.
Lebara: are Pakistan calls included in its international minutes?
Lebara sells UK SIM-only plans with included calls to selected international destinations. But a general promise of international minutes is not enough to prove that a particular plan includes Pakistan. The country and number-type list matters more than the large minute figure on the card. If a general destination checker lists Pakistan but the specific plan’s included-country list does not, do not assume the minutes apply. Ask Lebara to confirm the charge for that exact SIM and number type before making a conventional call.
If you already have a useful Lebara UK plan, investigate its exact Pakistan rate or any country-specific option before changing networks. It may be better to keep a good Vodafone-based UK plan and buy calls separately. We have current Lebara SIM-only offers, but those UK plan cards are not evidence of inclusive Pakistan minutes. Never make a chargeable call on the assumption that “international minutes” means any country.
What if you already use O2, EE, Vodafone or SMARTY?
You may not need a new main SIM. For example, O2 markets an International Bolt On for eligible Pay Monthly customers. It has a monthly bolt-on charge as well as destination-specific per-minute charges; the monthly fee is not a pot of included Pakistan minutes. Check the current bolt-on cost, Pakistan mobile/landline rates and account eligibility, and compare the combined extra cost with a Pakistan-specific bundle. This may be more convenient than switching SIMs, but it is not automatically cheaper.
EE and Vodafone also have international charging arrangements, but eligibility and country lists differ by product. If you have an existing contract, the useful comparison is often the incremental cost of keeping it plus a Pakistan calling extra, rather than the headline price of an entirely new contract. For a new contract, compare the full minimum term and any scheduled price changes.
SMARTY can be attractive for UK data, but its normal UK minutes must not be treated as Pakistan minutes. Compare our tracked SMARTY plans for UK use and price any calls to +92 separately. The same rule applies to an inexpensive SIM on another UK network.
How many Pakistan minutes make a bundle worthwhile?
A monthly bundle can be much better value for long conversations, but poor value for someone making two quick calls. Compare the fixed bundle charge with the actual billable minutes at the relevant per-minute rate.
This is a fictional calculation, not a live price or rate from any operator. Assume the same eligible destination, no connection charges, a £9 calling allowance covering 300 minutes, and a separate PAYG service charging 6p for each billable minute:
| Pakistan minutes used during the period | Hypothetical PAYG at 6p/min | Hypothetical bundle | Lower calling cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | £1.50 | £9 | PAYG |
| 75 | £4.50 | £9 | PAYG |
| 150 | £9 | £9 | Equal |
| 250 | £15 | £9 | Bundle |
Here the break-even point is 150 billable minutes (£9 ÷ £0.06). If you use more than the bundle's 300-minute allowance, you must add its out-of-bundle charge or price another valid option. If you need to maintain a UK data SIM alongside a calling-only bundle, add that separate service's cost too.
Can five short calls use more minutes than one long call?
Call rounding matters, especially for relatives who call frequently but briefly. If a product bills every started minute as a full minute, five calls of 61 seconds each use 10 billable minutes, not just over five minutes. Different providers and calling methods can use different charging increments, so this is a warning to check the selected product's terms, not a statement about all Pakistan plans.
The practical formula is:
Total cost for the same dates = UK mobile service you need + eligible Pakistan call charges or Pakistan bundle + mandatory extras.
Count only costs that actually apply. For example, if you already pay for a UK SIM and will keep it regardless, comparing the additional cost of Pakistan calls is more useful than pretending you can stop paying for your existing service. If switching saves the UK subscription too, then the full replacement-plan cost is relevant.
Our existing live comparison shows selected UK SIM-only offers from Lyca and SMARTY. It can help with UK data, UK coverage and ordinary domestic calling; it does not display the separate Pakistan-only products or certify an offer's +92 entitlement. If you are shopping primarily for calls to Pakistan, use the approved Lyca international-plan selection for that purchase path, then confirm the exact package. The UK offers below solve a different part of the decision.
