1pMobile vs Lyca Mobile: Which SIM Is Better for You?
By DealPriceCheck · Published 10 October 2026
Quick verdict: Check 1pMobile first if you are deciding between metered pay as you go (PAYG), a prepaid UK data bundle and paying in advance for a longer period. But classic PAYG can come with a minimum-spend requirement, so infrequent use does not necessarily mean a negligible bill. Check Lyca Mobile first if you regularly call eligible numbers abroad and an included or destination-specific calling bundle could reduce your total cost. If you mainly use UK data, calls and texts, compare the full cost of suitable current plans from both brands instead of assuming either is permanently cheaper.

Important before buying: The offers below are selected SIM-only plans, not a complete list of either provider's products. Classic 1pMobile PAYG, yearly prepaid options or Lyca's specialist international-calling packages may not appear in these cards. A standard Lyca View Deal does not guarantee calls to a particular overseas number. Check the exact product before ordering.

The 1pMobile PAYG catch: low unit rates are not the whole cost
Classic PAYG and a prepaid data bundle solve different problems. PAYG charges for eligible activity such as calls, texts and data outside a bundle; a Boost pays for a stated allowance over a stated validity period. Calling one of them “cheap” without checking how much you will use is misleading.
There is a second issue for a rarely used 1pMobile SIM: a minimum eligible-spend requirement may apply under the PAYG agreement. Check 1pMobile's current terms and conditions for whether it applies to your account, the amount, the commitment period and how Boost payments count. If such a requirement applies and eligible usage falls short, you may still have to cover the difference. Ending a Boost can also change which PAYG conditions apply. Our SIM-only cards do not calculate these account-level obligations.
A useful way to compare a standby phone is to ask three questions: How many calls, texts and megabytes will you really use? What minimum eligible spending does the current PAYG agreement require across the period you will keep the number? And would a prepaid Boost or another SIM cost less over that same period? A SIM kept for emergencies deserves this calculation just as much as an everyday phone.
Illustration without quoting current rates: if your actual eligible usage is below an applicable minimum, comparing only the small per-minute charges understates your effective cost. The minimum is not necessarily a second full bundle charge; check how qualifying usage and Boost payments are counted in your own terms. Use 1pMobile's published tariff and charges alongside its agreement, rather than relying on the brand name as a price promise. If metered PAYG is what you actually want, inspect the operator's PAYG and prepaid options directly: the SIM-only cards on this comparison may not list them.
Boost, annual prepayment or a Lyca bundle: compare like with like
For someone who uses UK mobile data regularly, a suitably sized bundle often makes more sense than paying per megabyte. But a rolling Boost, a prepaid annual product and a promotional Lyca plan do not have the same payment schedule. You should not compare one first payment against a whole year's upfront cost.
What you are buying
What to calculate before choosing
A metered 1pMobile PAYG service
Actual usage charges, the applicable minimum-spend terms and any ongoing account conditions
A 1pMobile Boost
The allowance, period covered by each payment, renewal behaviour and cancellation rules
A prepaid product with a longer validity
Total upfront cost, how frequently the data allowance refreshes, and what happens if you leave early
A Lyca bundle with an introductory offer
Number of discounted payments, subsequent payments, product validity and any commitment
Price both choices to the same end date. A 30-day validity period is not a calendar month: twelve consecutive 30-day periods cover 360 days. A service that requires a new purchase every 30 days can therefore need an additional renewal for continuous use across a full 365-day year. That arithmetic does not mean every 1pMobile or Lyca product is billed 13 times a year; follow the actual plan terms, especially for annual prepaid or calendar-month contracts.
Compare similar usable UK data amounts and count unavoidable upfront charges, later payments and exit conditions where applicable. The cards above show catalogue-recorded prices and promotion/renewal fields where available, with an individual last-verified date. If an essential term is missing, check it at the final checkout rather than filling the gap with an assumption. You can also browse 1pMobile SIM offers and Lyca Mobile SIM offers.
International calls: the strongest reason to check Lyca
If you phone a relative overseas using an ordinary mobile or landline number, the destination can matter more than the UK data allowance. 1pMobile publishes charges for calls to international destinations; a paid-per-minute approach may be economical for someone who only calls abroad briefly. On eligible Lyca products, included international minutes or a separate destination-focused calling package may cost less for more frequent calls. Neither assumption should be applied to every tariff.

WhatsApp or FaceTime Audio calls
A suitable data connection or Wi-Fi, rather than paying for conventional international minutes
Whether you are using an internet call, not a normal dialled call over Wi-Fi Calling
Crucial difference: WhatsApp and FaceTime Audio generally use internet connectivity. An ordinary international phone call placed through an operator's Wi-Fi Calling feature can still be billed as an international voice call. Do not confuse the two.
Network coverage: compare the recorded host, then your postcode
Do not assume that a different brand means different mobile masts — or that a shared host network guarantees identical speeds, indoor performance or account features. Use the host-network field in the current deal cards for both providers. Where both show the same network, expected radio coverage will broadly overlap, but handset compatibility, network capacity and provider-specific service policies can still affect your experience.
Check Ofcom's mobile coverage checker for your home, workplace and regular routes. If both relevant offers are recorded on EE and you want to compare more providers using that infrastructure, see our EE-network SIM comparison. Do not change your number based on a 5G badge alone.
Roaming, eSIM and 'Unlimited': three checks that prevent bad purchases
Roaming: An unlimited or large UK allowance does not promise the same amount of data abroad. Compare the destination, usable roaming data, charges after the allowance, fair-use rules and whether you may tether a laptop. Neither provider's UK hotspot support automatically proves permission to share data while roaming. Our cards may show a roaming indicator without the full policy; consult the current terms of the exact plan. For wider options see UK SIMs with EU roaming.
eSIM and Wi-Fi Calling: A provider advertising either feature is not proof that your particular handset, software version, service and activation path are supported. Look at any relevant eSIM information shown on the card, then confirm the exact combination with the operator before moving your main number. If eSIM is essential, explore our UK eSIM SIM-only comparison.
Unlimited UK data: Check the fair-use policy, hotspot restrictions, any congestion-management conditions and the separate roaming allowance. 'Unlimited' is not a promise of maximum speed everywhere or unrestricted travel data. Use the current product terms rather than a fixed fair-use threshold quoted in an old article.
Which should you choose?
Choose 1pMobile first if you want to weigh metered PAYG against a Boost or prepaid option, and you have calculated the true cost for the way you use your phone. A lightly used backup SIM is not automatically cheaper on classic PAYG — the minimum-spend conditions may decide that comparison. For everyday UK data, a correctly sized Boost may be a better fit than paying for individual megabytes.
Choose Lyca first if you regularly dial eligible overseas numbers and a specific inclusive or specialist package reduces your total UK plan-plus-calling bill. Lyca can also be the better domestic-data purchase where its actual recorded offer and subsequent renewal charges beat a comparable 1pMobile plan. Never assume the displayed standard Lyca plan includes the specialist international package you have in mind.
Choose on coverage and full cost, not brand, when you mostly use UK data, texts and calls. Check the same data need, the payment period, promotion end, commitment and actual host network, then use View Deal on the suitable live card to continue to the provider. Full plan details shows the recorded offer information; the provider's current terms govern eligibility. If neither fits, compare UK SIM-only deals across networks.
Keeping your number when you switch
You can normally keep your UK mobile number when moving between providers. Arrange the transfer using the current PAC process and give the code to your new provider. Avoid cancelling the old service first if keeping the number matters to you. Check unused PAYG credit, minimum-term charges and any refund conditions separately; a refund fee is not necessarily a fee for the number transfer itself.
There is no permanent winner. Classic PAYG, prepaid bundles and introductory SIM offers can have different costs even when the UK data amount looks similar. Compare the total amount payable for the same usage and period, including any applicable PAYG minimum and later renewal price.
Does 1pMobile PAYG have a minimum spend?
Do not assume PAYG can be left unused without cost. A minimum eligible-spend obligation may apply depending on the current agreement and your account. Check the applicable amount, period and treatment of Boost payments in 1pMobile's terms before buying an emergency or occasional-use SIM; do not treat it as a blanket extra charge on every active Boost.
Are 1pMobile and Lyca Mobile on the same network?
Check the host network recorded for each current SIM offer above. If the cards show the same network, the providers broadly share its radio coverage, but their prices, services and phone compatibility can still differ.
Does every Lyca Mobile SIM-only bundle include international calls?
No such assumption is safe. Included destinations, number types and minutes are specific to the product. Country-focused packages can be separate from ordinary UK-data SIM-only deals and may not appear in the comparison cards.
Which is better for travelling in Europe?
Choose by the actual countries, your plan's usable roaming allowance, the permitted activities and out-of-allowance charges. Check hotspot rules separately; a UK unlimited-data claim does not establish an unlimited European allowance.
Can I keep my number when switching?
Normally yes. Follow the provider's current PAC transfer process, and check credit and contract exit conditions before leaving.
How we compared 1pMobile and Lyca Mobile
This comparison focuses on the different buying decisions: classic PAYG and its potential minimum-spend consequences, Boost/prepayment versus promotional bundles, ordinary versus inclusive international calls, payment periods, coverage and travel requirements. We have not run independent speed tests, indoor-reception tests or customer-service trials.
DealPriceCheck shows selected UK SIM-only offers, not every tariff or specialist calling package. The shared catalogue provides recorded prices, introductory and later prices where available, UK data amounts, contract labels, host-network information and each card's individual last-verified date. A publication date is not an offer verification date. PAYG minimum-spend requirements, exact overseas-number eligibility, roaming hotspot permission and handset-specific support may need checking on the provider's own current pages.
