1pMobile vs VOXI: Which UK SIM-Only Network Is Better?
Quick answer: 1pMobile is the stronger starting point if EE coverage suits your everyday locations, you want an ordinary 30-day data Boost, or you regularly roam in eligible European destinations without buying a pass. VOXI deserves the first look if its VodafoneThree coverage works better locally, or its eligible Unlimited Social Media, Music or Video benefits would save you ordinary UK data. Both have flexible SIM options; neither is automatically cheaper or faster. Start with signal, then check the exact plan's useful data, travel costs and renewal terms.

1pMobile vs VOXI at a glance
| Compare | 1pMobile | VOXI | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK network | EE-based | Vodafone-based, with access to eligible shared VodafoneThree sites | Which signal is better depends on your postcode, handset and local rollout |
| Main SIM format | Prepaid 30-day data Boosts | Rolling 30-day subscriptions | Both are flexible, but renewal and out-of-bundle charging differ |
| Other payment models | Separate Classic PAYG and upfront annual products | Separate handset-finance option alongside the SIM | Don't compare Classic PAYG rates with a VOXI data bundle |
| 4G/5G | Eligible devices and plans | Eligible devices and plans | Check indoor 4G and the 5G your phone actually gets |
| UK calls and texts | Included on usual Boost plans | Included on standard SIM plans | Check exclusions for premium and special numbers |
| European roaming | Included on eligible Boosts, with a 14GB maximum on larger home allowances | Pass needed in many European destinations; Zone A pass-free | A 5GB 1pMobile Boost still has no more than 5GB of its home data to use abroad; VOXI can cost extra for a pass |
| Social, music, video | Standard data is used unless the exact product says otherwise | Selected zero-rated app traffic in the UK; Music/Video availability varies by tier | Social-app calls, ads, VPN traffic and roaming can still use ordinary data |
| eSIM and Wi-Fi Calling | Eligible plans and phones | Eligible plans and phones | Handset support and activation route matter more than a badge |
| Live comparison | 1pMobile offers | VOXI offers | Use live cards, not old promo prices |
The practical trade-off: if EE already works at home and at work, switching to VOXI is most sensible when the app benefits or total price are worth changing network. If VOXI's usable VodafoneThree coverage is stronger locally, don't stay with EE just for more headline gigabytes. The live 1pMobile cards and VOXI cards are the right places to compare current allowances once coverage passes the test.
Is 1pMobile or VOXI better for UK coverage?
Neither is best at every address. 1pMobile uses EE. VOXI uses Vodafone's retail network, with access to eligible VodafoneThree shared infrastructure. Switching between them changes the network family your phone uses.
VOXI's coverage checker describes combined Vodafone and Three access where the upgrade is technically available. That doesn't mean every VOXI customer can already use every Vodafone and Three mast or every 5G feature across the UK. A 1pMobile SIM on EE infrastructure likewise doesn't inherit every EE-branded tariff feature or guarantee the same real-world speeds.
How to compare coverage properly
- Enter your home postcode in Ofcom's Map Your Mobile. Compare EE with Vodafone and Three, looking at indoor 4G as well as outdoor 5G.
- Check your workplace, regular train route, family addresses and any rural location where calls matter. A network can be strong in a city and weak in one building.
- Read VOXI's latest availability information on the combined-network rollout. A shared site isn't active just because the merger happened.
- If the number matters for work or banking, test a spare SIM or eSIM before moving it. Make indoor calls, check incoming texts and run data tests at busy times.
- On older handsets, check VoLTE (4G Calling). 4G data doesn't prove voice calls will work after the 3G shutdown.
A postcode map is a prediction, not an indoor field test. Compare EE and Vodafone forecasts; use Three predictions as additional context, not as proof that every Three site is already accessible to VOXI. If signal is marginal, a test SIM is more useful than a national percentage or a dated 5G league table. For the wider distinction between host-network coverage and retail-service features, see our MVNO coverage and speeds guide.
Which is cheaper: 1pMobile or VOXI?
The cheaper one is the plan that covers your normal use for the lowest total cost, not the one with the lowest introductory price. Both have short rolling SIM products, so compare similar data allowances over the same period, then add any extras your habits make necessary.
On 1pMobile the usual comparison product is a prepaid 30-day Boost. On VOXI it's a 30-day rolling subscription with a data allowance and eligible app benefits. For either, check whether the allowance is promotional, how long it lasts, what happens at renewal and which usage is charged separately. VOXI has marketed price-locked plans, but read the terms of the specific offer rather than assuming every future tariff is permanently frozen.
| How you use your SIM | Compare first | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Light data, mostly Wi-Fi | Smallest 1pMobile Boost vs smallest VOXI plan with enough standard data | Buying a big social-data plan when you rarely use social apps on mobile data |
| Browsing, maps, messages, work apps | Equal practical allowances plus local reception | Treating unlimited social apps as unlimited data for maps, websites and banking |
| Frequent supported video or music in the UK | Higher-data 1pMobile Boost vs the VOXI tier with the specific zero-rated category you use | Assuming every VOXI plan includes unlimited streaming on every platform |
| One or two holidays abroad | UK price of each plan plus any VOXI roaming pass | Comparing UK prices and ignoring the trip |
| Almost no use, emergency backup | 1pMobile Classic PAYG spend rules vs a recurring bundle | Assuming "1p per minute" means the SIM is free to keep |
| Heavy tethering or hotspot | General-purpose data allowance, fair use, signal quality | Assuming VOXI's zero-rated social data makes laptop internet free |
Work out your real bill over the same period
Imagine two hypothetical 30-day plans, one at £8 per renewal and one at £10. Six renewals cost £48 or £60 over 180 days. Now add what you personally need: a VOXI European Roaming Pass for a relevant trip, any out-of-bundle calls, or the cost of buying a larger general-purpose allowance because your favourite app doesn't qualify for VOXI's zero-rating. The apparently cheaper plan can lose once those extras are counted.
Here is the reverse case. If VOXI's included Video benefit genuinely covers the app you watch most in the UK, you might manage with a smaller ordinary-data bundle than you would on 1pMobile. Estimate this from your phone's mobile-data usage, not screen time on Wi-Fi. The example prices above are purely illustrative, not current advertised tariffs.
Check the first payment, renewal charge, recurring period and eligibility of any offer. Twelve 30-day periods cover 360 days, not a full 365-day year. If you compare a prepaid annual 1pMobile product with either rolling plan, calculate its upfront cost and allowance-refresh dates separately; you cannot assume you may cancel and recover the unused portion.
Compare the 1pMobile SIM-only cards with the VOXI SIM-only cards, and open Full plan details before View Deal so you know exactly which product you're choosing.
Does VOXI's Unlimited Social Media make it better value?
It can, if the benefit matches what you do on mobile data. VOXI offers Unlimited Social Media on eligible rolling plans, while Unlimited Music or Video depends on the tier. This is selective zero-rated app traffic, not unlimited internet.
Scrolling a supported social app away from Wi-Fi can use the VOXI benefit instead of your general allowance. Opening an outside link, watching third-party ads, using an unsupported app or making a voice or video call may use ordinary data. VOXI says that some general-purpose data must remain available for its Unlimited app benefits to work. A benefit described as unlimited does not continue once the ordinary allowance is completely exhausted.
Five exclusions that can change the answer
- Voice and video calls through social platforms aren't necessarily covered. A WhatsApp call isn't the same as scrolling posts.
- Ads, embedded content and outside websites may use ordinary data even when opened from an eligible app.
- A VPN or privacy relay can stop traffic qualifying for zero-rating under VOXI's terms.
- Unlimited Music and Video aren't on every VOXI plan. Check the named category and supported services, not the word "unlimited" on a banner.
- The benefits are UK-only. Abroad, the same apps use your general data allowance.
A quick test: look at a normal week on your phone's mobile-data usage screen and distinguish mobile traffic from Wi-Fi. Maps, browsers, work apps, game downloads, cloud backups and video calls still need regular data. If these dominate, a straightforward larger Boost may suit you better. If eligible music or video streaming dominates, a suitable VOXI tier may stretch a smaller ordinary allowance further.
A streaming-service subscription is not included just because VOXI zero-rates eligible app traffic. If you pay separately for Netflix or Spotify, that payment remains. And a laptop connected through your phone's hotspot doesn't gain unlimited general internet just because the phone has Unlimited Social Media.
Check the named benefit at checkout. A DealPriceCheck VOXI card may show its ordinary data allowance without confirming every supported Music or Video service or app exception. If zero-rating is the reason you are choosing VOXI, confirm the exact tier and service before purchase.
Our SIM-only streaming guide shows how to estimate data needs instead of trusting an "unlimited" label.
Is 1pMobile or VOXI better for European roaming?
1pMobile is usually the simpler pick for regular trips to eligible European countries, because qualifying 30-day Boosts include roaming without a separate pass. VOXI is more nuanced than "no free European roaming": many countries need a paid European Roaming Pass, but its published Zone A destinations can use the plan allowance without one.
What does 1pMobile's 14GB roaming figure mean?
For eligible Boosts, usable roaming data is limited by your UK plan allowance or the 14GB fair-use ceiling, whichever is lower, in covered European destinations. This matters because DealPriceCheck's 1pMobile cards can display the general 14GB roaming ceiling even next to a 5GB Boost. It is a maximum policy limit, not 14GB of extra data for that smaller plan.
A hypothetical 5GB home Boost cannot give you 14GB of inclusive European data: the effective ceiling is 5GB. A qualifying 50GB Boost may allow up to 14GB abroad. Neither is a promise that every European territory qualifies. Excess usage may draw on PAYG credit, and prolonged roaming has additional restrictions. Check whether your destination appears on the operator's current eligible-country list.
Where does VOXI require a pass?
VOXI generally requires a paid European Roaming Pass in destinations such as France or Spain. Its published Zone A exception covers the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man, Iceland and Norway, where you can use an eligible ordinary allowance without buying the pass. This is a real exception: don't add a roaming-pass cost for a trip that qualifies for Zone A.
For pass-requiring destinations, validity starts when you buy the pass, not when you first connect abroad. Under VOXI's published terms, eligible roaming data is capped at your ordinary UK allowance or 20GB, whichever is lower. The pass does not turn zero-rated UK Social Media, Music or Video into unlimited overseas usage. VOXI also requires the SIM to be activated in the UK before roaming can be enabled.
| Illustrative UK plan allowance | 1pMobile: maximum included data on an eligible Boost in covered Europe | VOXI: maximum ordinary data with the required pass, or in Zone A |
|---|---|---|
| 5GB | Up to 5GB | Up to 5GB |
| 50GB | Up to 14GB | Up to 20GB |
Illustrative ceiling calculations for matching home allowances, not current product offers. VOXI needs a pass outside Zone A.
| Trip | Check on 1pMobile | Check on VOXI |
|---|---|---|
| Four nights in France | Is France included, and does your allowance fit within the 14GB cap? | Price and validity of the right European pass, and its data ceiling |
| A week in Ireland | Included-destination terms and your Boost allowance | Zone A pass-free terms, data ceiling, fair use |
| Two weeks in Spain with a hotspot | Whether 14GB covers work use, and what happens after | Multi-day pass cost, the 20GB-or-home-allowance limit, then extra data cost |
| A long stay abroad | 90-day and extended-roaming fair-use rules | Pass renewal, acceptable use, length of stay |
A VOXI plan can be the better UK fit for a heavy video user and still cost more across a travel period. And if you only visit a VOXI Zone A country, don't add a pass cost that doesn't apply. If roaming drives your choice, see our comparison of UK SIMs for EU roaming.
What's the difference between 1pMobile Boost and Classic PAYG?
They're different products, and the difference matters when you compare with a VOXI 30-day subscription.
1pMobile Boost: a prepaid bundle with a set allowance and a 30-day renewal. It's the product on our current 1pMobile cards. If you don't renew, the service can revert to standard PAYG terms, so don't assume the bundle's benefits continue without payment.
1pMobile Classic PAYG: calls, texts and data are charged from credit at published per-unit rates. That can suit very light use, but the headline 1p rate is not the whole cost. Under terms updated in July 2026, pure-PAYG customers joining from 1 August 2026 must spend at least £10 in each 90-day commitment period. If they spend less, 1pMobile can deduct the shortfall from remaining credit and attempt a payment from a saved payment method. An unpaid shortfall or empty balance can lead to suspension and loss of the number. Earlier joining-date cohorts have different commitment periods, so existing customers must check their terms. This is a minimum eligible spend, not necessarily an extra £10 charge on top of that usage.
Annual prepaid products: 1pMobile also sells packages paid upfront with their own allowance-refresh terms. They're neither the monthly VOXI subscription nor the 30-day Boost on our partner cards. A lower implied monthly cost doesn't mean monthly cancellation or refunds.
Which suits an occasional-use SIM?
For an emergency, spare-phone or rarely used number, compare the total cost of keeping the number active, not just the pence-per-minute headline. Relevant Classic PAYG customers need to meet minimum eligible spend even when the phone is rarely used. Usage and Boost purchases can count towards eligible spend under the terms, but a recurring Boost is still a separate 30-day product. If a Boost ends or its renewal fails, 1pMobile says the SIM returns to standard PAYG rules, starting a new PAYG commitment period. VOXI is best compared as a recurring SIM, not as a classic per-unit PAYG substitute.
For more, read our PAYG vs SIM-only guide. A 1pMobile Boost "View Deal" isn't a checkout for Classic PAYG or an annual product. Those are separate purchase journeys.
Is VOXI faster than 1pMobile on 4G and 5G?
You can't name a national speed winner from the network names alone. 1pMobile is EE-based. VOXI is Vodafone-based with access to eligible shared VodafoneThree sites. Both advertise 4G and 5G on suitable phones. Real speed and call stability depend on location, mast load, indoor signal, frequency bands, handset and plan.
Older comparison pages sometimes declare a permanent winner from a few 5G samples or town counts. That's a poor guide to your postcode today, especially while VodafoneThree sharing evolves. A network's own speed test doesn't prove an MVNO will match it everywhere.
For a fair test, use the same unlocked compatible phone in the same place at comparable busy times. Compare page loading, upload speed, call stability and latency, not one peak download. If 5G is patchy but 4G is solid, good 4G can serve you better than a weak 5G icon.
Can you tether or use the SIM in a router?
For tethering or replacing home broadband, check each tariff's data-use policy, device support and fair use. VOXI's acceptable-use policy is written for private, personal use and restricts commercial usage; a phone hotspot is not permission to run a business or a permanent office broadband replacement. 1pMobile also has fair-use and non-personal-use provisions, especially relevant for exceptionally high consumption. Neither provider's phone-SIM marketing guarantees suitability as a permanent router subscription. Our hotspot and tethering guide covers the wider use case.
Which is better for eSIM, Wi-Fi Calling and older phones?
Both can support eSIM, Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling on eligible plans and phones. Don't pick one because an old review says the other lacks eSIM.
1pMobile offers eSIM to new customers and qualifying existing customers converting from a physical SIM. VOXI advertises eSIM on eligible rolling plans, plus Wi-Fi Calling, 4G Calling and Visual Voicemail on supported devices. VOXI's published Visual Voicemail support instructions describe supported iPhones rather than Android phones. Check the latest handset guidance before treating that feature as a deciding advantage.
Before paying, confirm:
- Does the exact tariff and ordering route allow a new eSIM, or only converting an existing physical SIM?
- Is your phone model supported for eSIM, Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE? Being unlocked doesn't guarantee every feature.
- Can you make and receive calls and security texts where you live? Test before moving a number used for banking.
- If your phone is older, will calls work over 4G (VoLTE) rather than a withdrawn 3G service?
- Do you need Visual Voicemail? VOXI publishes iPhone-specific eligibility requirements. Confirm your device, and do not assume equivalent support from 1pMobile.
See our UK eSIM network support guide and Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE guide.
How can you avoid unexpected bills on either provider?
Check the controls on each, because they differ. On 1pMobile Boost, look at recurring renewal, whether a failed Boost moves you onto standard PAYG, the credit available for out-of-bundle use and the rules for unused data. On VOXI, confirm how the subscription renews, what happens when general-purpose data runs out and whether an extra service or roaming pass is needed for what you plan to do.
Neither unlimited UK calls nor Unlimited Social Media automatically covers premium numbers, international calls from the UK, all video calls or overseas data. International calls from Britain and roaming abroad are different services. If you mostly call over Wi-Fi apps, tuning the ordinary data plan may save more.
Check spending controls and out-of-plan charges at final checkout, and don't trust a "no contract" or "unlimited" headline.
Does VOXI or 1pMobile offer phones on contract?
VOXI sells eligible handsets on a separate device finance agreement, alongside the rolling SIM. VOXI's published help describes 12-, 24-, 30- and 36-month device repayment choices, depending on eligibility. The phone payments continue if you cancel or change the 30-day SIM plan. Finance has its own credit decision and terms: a flexible SIM does not make the phone a one-month purchase.
1pMobile mainly sells SIM and prepaid mobile service rather than a comparable handset-finance range. This guide compares SIM-only decisions; if a new phone is essential, obtain VOXI's actual repayment schedule and compare the complete device cost plus SIM payments against buying the handset separately with a suitable SIM.
Who should choose 1pMobile and who should choose VOXI?
Choose 1pMobile if…
- EE-based signal has passed your home, work and travel checks, and VOXI isn't more reliable in those places.
- You want a predictable 30-day Boost with enough ordinary data for maps, video calls, email and streaming on any platform.
- You visit countries covered by 1pMobile's included European roaming, and the 14GB cap (or your smaller home allowance) is enough.
- You don't depend on VOXI's zero-rated apps, or a comparable Boost gives better usable data.
- A current card on our 1pMobile deals page fits after you check renewal and feature details.
Choose VOXI if…
- VodafoneThree-based reception, including locally enabled sharing, gives better real service than EE where you need it.
- You use Unlimited Social Media, or a tier with the Music or Video benefits you use in Britain, and you understand the exclusions.
- The current VOXI tariff gives a better total cost for your usage, even after any paid roaming passes.
- You need a VOXI eSIM or Visual Voicemail setup and have confirmed your phone supports it.
- The VOXI offers on DealPriceCheck match your usage and travel.
Neither? If EE is unreliable and VOXI's locally available VodafoneThree coverage is also weak, check another network family, including O2, and independently test any Three-based alternative rather than assuming it adds distinct coverage where VodafoneThree sharing has already arrived. A phone that cannot make reliable calls at home is a poor purchase at any price.
How do you switch between VOXI and 1pMobile?
Text PAC to 65075 from your current SIM. Switching between them changes your UK provider and underlying network, not just your bundle, so test coverage and number-critical services first.
- Text INFO to 85075 from your current SIM to check your position and any exit costs.
- To keep your number, text PAC to 65075 and give the code to your new provider. To drop the number, text STAC to 75075 instead.
- Arrange activation and transfer with the new provider. A PAC is normally valid for 30 days, and switches commonly complete within one working day of the new provider receiving the details.
- Don't cancel the old number separately before the switch. A flexible SIM doesn't clear any handset finance you have through VOXI.
- Test incoming calls, outgoing calls, security texts and mobile data as soon as the transfer completes.
For more, see our guide to keeping your number when switching and Ofcom's mobile switching advice.
Compare the exact SIM before you buy
Read the offer card carefully: the 1pMobile catalogue currently displays the general 14GB EU roaming cap alongside even smaller home allowances. You cannot roam with more inclusive data than the eligible home bundle contains. The VOXI cards display “Paid roaming pass · 20GB”: that 20GB is a maximum fair-use ceiling, not a free pass, and not 20GB on a smaller plan. VOXI's app-specific Unlimited Music/Video eligibility may also need checking beyond the short card summary.
If 1pMobile fits, start with the current 1pMobile SIM-only cards. Open Full plan details, verify the 30-day Boost and use its View Deal route. That isn't Classic PAYG or an annual prepaid plan.
If VOXI fits, compare the VOXI SIM-only cards. Confirm the app benefits, general data allowance, roaming terms and eSIM options for that exact plan before you use its purchase route.
Buying order: check local coverage, the exact app and data benefits, your destination's roaming rules, and the full renewal cost. Then use the View Deal route on the specific card. A 1pMobile Boost checkout is not a Classic PAYG or annual prepaid checkout.
1pMobile vs VOXI: FAQs
Which is better, 1pMobile or VOXI?
Check 1pMobile first if EE reception is good, you want a standard 30-day data bundle or you travel to eligible European countries without wanting a roaming pass. Check VOXI first if VodafoneThree-based service is better where you live and you use the Unlimited Social Media, Music or Video benefits in the UK. Price and tariff terms decide the rest.
Does 1pMobile have better coverage than VOXI?
Not at every address. 1pMobile uses EE, and VOXI uses Vodafone with access to eligible shared VodafoneThree sites. Predicted coverage and a real handset test at your postcode beat old national rankings.
Does VOXI now use both Vodafone and Three?
VOXI describes access to a combined VodafoneThree network where technically available. That doesn't mean full access to every site or feature everywhere. Check its current coverage information for your location.
Is 1pMobile cheaper than VOXI?
Neither wins permanently. Compare similar allowances over the same 30-day period, and include any VOXI roaming passes or paid extras you expect to need. VOXI's app benefits can also change how much ordinary data you need.
Does VOXI really offer unlimited social data?
Eligible plans zero-rate named apps in the UK, but voice and video calls, third-party ads, outside links and VPN or private-relay traffic can use ordinary data. Music and Video depend on the plan, and none of the benefits apply while roaming.
Does 1pMobile include EU roaming?
Qualifying Boosts include roaming in eligible European destinations, with a 14GB fair-use ceiling on larger Boosts. A 5GB home allowance is still at most 5GB abroad, and destination and prolonged-use restrictions apply.
Do VOXI customers always need to buy a European roaming pass?
No. Many European countries need a paid pass, but VOXI's Zone A exception covers the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man, Iceland and Norway. Check the latest destination rules, and remember that overseas data is capped by your plan or the published fair-use maximum.
Is VOXI faster than 1pMobile on 5G?
There's no reliable universal winner. Networks, radio sharing, local load, handset and plan all affect speed. Check coverage and, if you can, test where you need data.
Can I get eSIM and Wi-Fi Calling on both?
Both advertise these on eligible plans and devices. Confirm your exact phone, whether you're ordering a new eSIM or converting a SIM, and 4G Calling (VoLTE) support before moving a number you rely on.
Does 1pMobile still have traditional pay as you go?
Yes, but Classic PAYG isn't a 30-day Boost. Pure-PAYG customers joining from 1 August 2026 face a published £10 eligible-spend requirement per 90 days. Other groups have different rules, so check the current terms if you keep a number mostly unused.
Can I buy a phone on finance with VOXI?
VOXI offers eligible devices on separate finance terms, while its SIM plan is rolling. Cancelling the SIM does not cancel handset repayments; compare both costs separately.
Can I keep my number when switching between these providers?
Yes, normally. Text PAC to 65075 from your UK number and give the code to the new operator. Let the new provider arrange the switch instead of cancelling your old number first.
