First decision: keep your UK SIM or replace it?
The live offers above compare ordinary UK SIM service. They are useful for coverage, data, contract length and price, but they do not establish that any particular card includes calls to Ghana. A Ghana calling package and a UK data bundle are separate purchases unless the exact provider terms explicitly combine them. For Ghana-specific calling, you can explore Lyca’s international-plan selection through our confirmed partner link; verify that the product you choose actually covers the +233 numbers you dial.
| Your situation | Start by comparing | Don't overlook |
|---|
| You ring Ghanaian mobiles or landlines for long periods each week | A Ghana-specific voice bundle or an eligible calling plan | Number eligibility, actual billable minutes and expiry |
|---|
| You already have a good UK plan and mainly want to phone relatives | A second calling SIM or a paid app-to-phone service | The additional cost rather than a second full UK bill |
|---|
| You're an eligible existing Vodafone customer | The relevant Call Abroad Extra alongside your current plan | Ghana must be on that Extra's destination list, not merely a different list |
|---|
| You call conventional Ghanaian numbers only occasionally | Verified PAYG/app-to-phone rates and any fixed fees | Connection charges, minimum top-ups and credit expiry |
|---|
| Both parties can use internet calling | WhatsApp or another app-to-app service over Wi-Fi | It is not the same as dialling a normal Ghanaian landline |
|---|
For a new everyday UK line, you can compare Lyca Mobile's tracked SIM deals and Vodafone's current SIM-only offers. If your only problem is expensive Ghana calling, evaluate the incremental cost of fixing that first: replacing an otherwise suitable UK contract may be an unnecessary expense.
Lyca's Ghana bundle: the right product matters more than the brand
Lyca uses EE's UK mobile network and has published a Ghana-specific calling product covering eligible Ghanaian landlines and mobiles. That makes it a credible starting point for someone who wants a normal mobile number from which to call Ghana, rather than relying on an internet calling account. But the country-specific product is not the same thing as every Lyca SIM-only deal shown above.
Two practical questions determine whether it is the right purchase.
First, what exactly does the Ghana package include? Check whether its allowance is devoted to Ghana calls, how long it lasts, what UK calls or data are supplied — if any — and what happens after the included minutes are exhausted. A package designed primarily for overseas calls might still leave you needing another SIM for everyday UK data. Do not assume a Ghana calling bundle includes unlimited UK calls or a particular amount of data merely because a standard Lyca plan does.
Second, are you eligible for the offer? The Ghana product summary sets new-customer and activation conditions, which can affect existing Lyca users, number transfers and SIMs ordered in advance. Check its current eligibility, activation period, cancellation and renewal wording before paying. If a generic terms section mentions a different country or product, do not assume it describes your Ghana bundle: ask Lyca to confirm the Ghana-specific conditions. Do not apply another product’s terms to this purchase.
To see relevant options through our confirmed partner route, browse Lyca's international SIM plans. This is a wider international-plan page, not a guaranteed direct checkout for the Ghana-specific bundle. Check the Ghana product and its eligibility there, or compare the Lyca UK SIM offers we track if your main requirement also includes domestic data and calls. The cards' normal View Deal links remain specific to those UK tariffs. If you want to compare charges outside an inclusive allowance, use Lyca's international rates; the rates page is not proof that a particular Ghana call is included in a bundle.
Talk Home Mobile: compare the Ghana plan, not the global headline
Talk Home Mobile markets Ghana-specific options under names such as Ghana Basic and Ghana Pro. The important distinction is that these are country-focused international calling products, whereas its broad "Global" packages may serve a completely different list of destinations. Buying the biggest advertised worldwide allowance does not prove you can use it to phone an MTN or Telecel number in Ghana.
Think of Talk Home as an alternative when you would benefit from a dedicated calling line and want to keep the UK SIM you already trust. Compare its current Ghana-specific options with Lyca using the same intended calling period, eligible Ghanaian numbers and expected number of calls, not just headline minutes.
Also establish what is being sold: a Talk Home mobile SIM, a calling app and a calling card are distinct services. A Ghana SIM calling product may require a Talk Home line and have its own renewal and out-of-bundle rules. If you want one phone to handle both your existing UK number and the new line, check dual-SIM support and choose the correct outgoing SIM before calling Ghana.
Neither Lyca nor Talk Home should win automatically because a named Ghana package has the larger printed allowance. A pack that expires with most of its minutes unused can be worse value than a smaller bundle or straightforward PAYG calling.
Which Ghanaian number are you actually dialling?
Ghana's country code is +233. To dial from the UK, replace the leading domestic 0 with +233. For example, a Ghanaian mobile written `024 123 4567` becomes `+233 24 123 4567`. That is the correct format, but it does not by itself make the call eligible for free or inclusive minutes.
The number matters because calling services sometimes distinguish Ghanaian landlines from mobile networks and, in some cases, apply different rates to different mobile-network destinations. You may see names such as MTN, Telecel (formerly Vodafone Ghana) and AT (formerly AirtelTigo) in rate lists; some calling services still use legacy network names. Ghana supports mobile-number portability: the first few digits are not reliable proof of which network carries a person's number today. What counts is the provider's actual rating of the full number.
Before comparing costs, check three things for your real recipient:
- Is it a standard Ghanaian mobile or landline, rather than a short code, premium line, business service or unusual forwarded number?
- Does the selected bundle cover that kind of number, or does the calling app apply a different charge?
- Are calls billed by the second, rounded to whole minutes or subject to a separate connection charge?
A landline in Accra and a mobile used in Kumasi should not automatically be priced with the same rate. Nor should a low advertised "Ghana rate" for an unspecified destination be treated as the charge for every number saved in your contacts.
Already with Vodafone? Check the Ghana add-on before switching
Vodafone has different international Extras, and their destination lists are not interchangeable. The broader Call Abroad Extra has listed Ghana among eligible destinations; the standard International Saver Extra has a different list. That distinction matters more than which product advertises the most international minutes. If Ghana is absent from the one attached to your account, your call can be charged at the ordinary international rate.
If you already pay for Vodafone and want to keep it, compare the extra cost of the correct Ghana-eligible add-on against a separate Ghana calling bundle or prepaid calling account. Include whether the Extra is available on your particular tariff, its included mobile/landline calls, renewal arrangements and what each call costs after the allowance is spent. Vodafone lists its Pay Monthly Call Abroad Extras as recurring monthly add-ons until cancelled. Check whether your account is eligible and how to stop renewal before buying for a single month.
If you would have to take out an entirely new Vodafone contract solely to qualify, the calculation is different: add the full UK plan commitment and any scheduled price rises as well as the international Extra. Our Vodafone provider comparison covers regular UK tariffs; those cards do not promise Ghana calling benefits on their own.
Lebara and calling apps: other ways to reach Ghana
Lebara has international calling features on eligible UK SIMs and publishes Ghana calling rates. However, "international minutes included" does not establish that Ghana is included in the allowance of the particular SIM you are buying. Check its current destination list and number eligibility before assuming a Ghanaian mobile or landline will be covered. If you're already on Lebara, compare the additional Ghana calling charge with what a replacement plan would cost. You can examine our Lebara SIM listings or Lebara's international-calling options through our partner link. Our Lebara vs Lyca Mobile comparison covers their UK coverage and service differences; it does not replace this Ghana-specific calling check.
A different solution is an app-to-phone calling account. Services such as BOSS Revolution let you call an ordinary Ghanaian number without requiring the person answering to use the same app. They can be practical for infrequent calls when keeping your current UK SIM is more valuable than moving to another provider. They are not the same as a free WhatsApp-to-WhatsApp call: a traditional call to Ghana still uses paid voice minutes or calling credit.
Be careful with rates here. A provider may show one per-minute charge for Ghanaian landlines and separate charges for individual mobile-network routes. Calling via a UK access number may also introduce charges from your current UK operator, on top of the international calling service. Before topping up, check the full destination, whether the app uses mobile data or an access number, any minimum credit purchase, credit expiry, and whether a calling plan renews automatically.
A low PAYG rate can be genuinely attractive, but it is not comparable to a Ghana-specific bundle without accounting for your actual billable calls, any minimum credit purchase and the cost of the UK service you retain. If an app offers a low rate only to a named Ghanaian mobile network, ask how it will charge the actual number, particularly if that number has been ported. We don't recommend one non-partner app as a permanent cheapest winner based on a promotional rate table.
The real-cost test: when a bundle wins — and when it loses again
A country calling bundle can beat PAYG for a regular caller and become more expensive again if it has a steep out-of-allowance rate. That is the calculation missing from many simplistic "cost per minute" rankings.
Here is a fictional example, not a current rate from Lyca, Talk Home, Lebara, Vodafone or any app. Assume the two calling options reach the same eligible Ghanaian numbers, cover the same period, round minutes identically and have no connection charges. You keep and pay for the same UK SIM in either case.
- Option A: 15p for each billable PAYG minute, with no fixed calling fee.
- Option B: £9 for a bundle of 90 eligible minutes, then 25p for each additional minute.
| Billable Ghana minutes | Option A: PAYG | Option B: bundle + excess | Cheaper calling method |
|---|
| 20 | £3.00 | £9.00 | PAYG |
|---|
| 60 | £9.00 | £9.00 | Tie |
|---|
| 90 | £13.50 | £9.00 | Bundle |
|---|
| 120 | £18.00 | £16.50 | Bundle |
|---|
| 135 | £20.25 | £20.25 | Tie |
|---|
| 160 | £24.00 | £26.50 | PAYG |
|---|
The bundle first breaks even at 60 billable minutes and ceases to be cheaper above 135 in this illustration. It is the excess-minute charge that changes the winner — not the provider's brand. For whole billable minutes, PAYG wins below 60 and above 135; the bundle wins from 61 to 134. A genuinely suitable larger bundle might be better than either, but you need its actual price and included destinations to prove that.
What to include when you calculate your own bill
If you retain your UK plan regardless, treat it as a shared cost and compare only the extra Ghana calling expenditure. If you are replacing your main UK plan, compare everything over the same dates: the replacement SIM's UK data and calls, Ghana minutes, any compulsory add-on, top-ups, charges after the allowance and early-exit costs you would really incur.
Also count billable, not just conversational, minutes. Ten calls of 65 seconds amount to less than eleven minutes of speech, yet a service rounding every started minute upwards could charge 20 full minutes. That is only a rounding illustration; each product has its own billing rules.
For a service renewed in successive 30-day periods, 12 periods cover 360 days. Covering 365 days without a gap can require entering a 13th period, whereas calendar-month billing and annual prepaid products work differently. Compare continuous service over the same days rather than writing "12 months" beside two different billing schedules.
Second SIM or moving your UK number: which works better?
If your current UK number is used for work, banking messages, healthcare appointments or other important contacts, a separate calling method can be less disruptive. Keep the existing UK line, then use an app or compatible second SIM when you ring Ghana. On dual-SIM phones, check which line is used for international voice calls; leaving the wrong line selected could trigger the standard charge from your UK operator.
Changing the main provider makes sense if the alternative also gives you the UK coverage, data and everyday calling services you need. Lyca operates on EE's UK network, but that doesn't make its reception identical for every phone and service feature. Check your regular locations, handset support and existing commitment before porting a number just to obtain Ghana calling minutes.
If you choose to switch and keep your UK number, text PAC to 65075 from the old SIM and give the code to the new provider. Don't cancel your number before arranging the transfer. Early termination or separate device-finance payments may still apply. Our UK number-switching guide provides the process, and Ofcom's switching guidance explains the relevant consumer rules.
Calling +233 from Britain is not roaming in Ghana
International calling is making a call from the UK to a Ghanaian number. Roaming is using your UK SIM when you are physically in Ghana. A Ghana-inclusive international voice bundle does not automatically give you data or cheap local calls when you land in Accra, and an EU roaming benefit is not evidence of any Ghana roaming allowance.
Calling a +44 UK number whose owner is visiting Ghana is also different: you're generally dialling a UK number, while the traveller may have their own roaming charges. The other person's location does not change their phone number into +233.
With WhatsApp or another app-to-app service, both participants use internet access and you avoid the mobile operator's normal international voice charge. That can be the simplest option when relatives have reliable Wi-Fi. Your handset's Wi-Fi Calling feature is different: an ordinary call to a +233 phone number can still be billed under your mobile provider's international tariff, even if it travels over Wi-Fi. Our international calling SIM overview explains the wider UK market; this guide stays focused on Ghana.
Which option suits your Ghana calling habits?
A few occasional calls: Keep a UK SIM that already suits you. Check whether an internet call will do; otherwise compare a verified pay-as-you-go app-to-phone rate against your existing operator's rate. Do not take on a recurring bundle until you know you will use the minutes.
Regular, long calls to a Ghanaian phone: Start with a Ghana-specific mobile bundle from Lyca or Talk Home and compare it against separate calling credit. Check the exact receiving number, fair-use and renewal rules. For Lyca, use the international-plans route linked above as a starting point, not a promise that every standard SIM includes Ghana.
You already have Vodafone or Lebara: Check the precise Ghana inclusion or PAYG rate on your existing product before buying a new main SIM. The best answer could be an eligible Extra, a separate international account or simply staying where you are.
Your calls mainly go to different Ghanaian mobile networks: Verify the charge or included-minute eligibility against the recipient's full number rather than inferring the network from its prefix.
You are shopping for UK data as well: The general UK SIM-only catalogue can help you find an appropriate allowance. Keep the decision about Ghana voice calls separate until the exact purchased product confirms both benefits.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best SIM for calling Ghana from the UK?
For frequent ordinary calls to Ghana, compare eligible Ghana-focused products from Lyca Mobile and Talk Home Mobile. If you already have a suitable UK contract, an approved Ghana calling add-on or an app-to-phone service may cost less than replacing it. There is no permanent cheapest winner across all calling volumes and destinations.
Does Lyca include Ghana in every SIM plan?
No. Lyca has marketed a Ghana-specific voice product, but that does not mean every ordinary UK data tariff includes Ghanaian landline and mobile calls. Confirm the exact product, eligible numbers, minutes and conditions before buying.
Can Lebara customers call Ghana using their international minutes?
Only if the specific plan's destination and number-type rules include the Ghanaian number being called. A general promise of international minutes is not enough. Otherwise the operator's applicable international charges can apply.
Is Vodafone International Saver the same as Call Abroad for Ghana?
No. These are different Extras with different destination lists. Vodafone has listed Ghana under Call Abroad; do not assume International Saver includes it. Confirm the currently eligible product on your account before making calls.
Is calling a Ghanaian mobile more expensive than a landline?
It can be, and some services also charge differently for particular Ghanaian mobile-network routes. Check the full +233 destination and the product's applicable rate, not just the country's name or the number prefix.
How do I dial Ghana from a UK mobile?
Use +233 followed by the Ghanaian number without the initial domestic zero. For example, `024 123 4567` becomes `+233 24 123 4567`. Correct dialling does not guarantee that the call is included in your allowance.
Can I call Ghana for free over WhatsApp?
An app-to-app call over Wi-Fi avoids a conventional international voice charge when both callers have the app and internet. It does not automatically let you ring an ordinary Ghanaian landline or a mobile number whose owner is not using the app.
Will a Ghana calling bundle work when I travel to Ghana?
Not automatically. International calling to Ghana from Britain and roaming in Ghana are separate services. Check the provider's travel charges and any local or travel SIM options before your trip.
Bottom line: find out whether you need to dial a real +233 number, how many billable minutes you use and whether your current UK plan can stay. Then compare the full cost of a Ghana-specific bundle, eligible existing-network add-on or calling service. Use our live UK SIM cards for UK mobile needs, but never assume they certify Ghana-specific minutes.
