Lyca Mobile UK Plan Smart 5GB: Price, Real Cost and Alternatives
Offer information checked 3 November 2026.
Lyca Mobile's UK Plan Smart is a prepaid 5GB SIM with an advertised £3.50 first 30-day payment and £5 renewals. It uses EE's UK network, provides 1,000 UK minutes and 1,000 texts, and advertises 100 international minutes to eligible destinations plus up to 5GB of EU roaming. It is a low-cost option for people who mostly use Wi-Fi and do not need unlimited UK calls.
Is it the cheapest sensible choice? Not for everyone. Lyca's separate 6GB rolling offer is advertised at £3 for each of its first three payments, then £6. It provides an extra 1GB of UK data and unlimited standard UK calls and texts. The 6GB offer costs less over the first seven payments on the advertised schedules; UK Plan Smart's lower renewal price moves it ahead from payment eight. The roaming allowances differ, too.

One important qualification about the £3.50 promotion
Lyca still advertises UK Plan Smart at £3.50 on its current plan listings, but the detailed promotional terms linked to the product state that an earlier campaign ended on 23 October 2026. The provider's promotion and its published small print are therefore not fully aligned. We could verify the advertised offer, not eligibility at the final checkout for an individual buyer.
Those earlier terms refer to online new customers, one discounted offer per number, a 30-day activation window and an exclusion affecting certain previous customers porting the same number back to Lyca. Do not assume those older restrictions apply unchanged to a newly advertised promotion, but do check the applicable offer conditions before ordering, especially when transferring an existing number. The £5 standard renewal is the more useful number for a long-term budget.
What does Lyca 5GB really cost over time?
The following is the published schedule, assuming the introductory payment is available to you and later prices do not change.
| Consecutive 30-day payments | Calculation | Total paid | Average per payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | £3.50 | £3.50 | £3.50 |
| 3 | £3.50 + 2 × £5 | £13.50 | £4.50 |
| 6 | £3.50 + 5 × £5 | £28.50 | £4.75 |
| 8 | £3.50 + 7 × £5 | £38.50 | £4.81 |
| 12 | £3.50 + 11 × £5 | £58.50 | £4.88 |
| 13 | £3.50 + 12 × £5 | £63.50 | £4.88 |
Why does the 13th payment matter? Twelve 30-day bundles provide 360 days of service, not 365. To remain covered through day 365, you would need the next renewal, taking the cash paid to £63.50, with that last bundle also covering days beyond the first year. Twelve payments still cost £58.50, not £42: £3.50 is not the recurring price.
These figures describe payments and service periods, not an annual contract or a price guarantee. For a temporary second SIM, your first payment may matter most. For ongoing use, compare the £5 renewal with other rolling plans.
Lyca 5GB vs Lyca 6GB: which deal is better?
Both use EE's UK network, but they differ in allowance, billing model, included benefits and how their introductory prices end. Lyca calls the 6GB offer a one-month SIM-only plan, while the DealPriceCheck 6GB card lists a 30-day rolling term; check the actual dates shown at checkout rather than assuming the payment cycles are identical.
| UK Plan Smart 5GB | Lyca 1 Month 6GB | |
|---|---|---|
| Initial payment | £3.50 | £3 |
| Introductory discount | First 30-day payment | First three payments |
| Later price | £5 per 30 days | £6 per renewal |
| UK data | 5GB | 6GB |
| UK minutes/texts | 1,000 / 1,000 | Unlimited standard UK minutes/texts |
| International minutes | 100, to eligible numbers | 100, to eligible numbers |
| Included EU roaming | Up to 5GB | Up to 2.5GB |
| Payment type | Prepaid 30-day PAYG bundle | Rolling one-month SIM-only offer |
| Purchase route | Select 5GB from Lyca's tracked budget offers | 6GB offer details and View Deal |
How much would each cost?
| Number of payments | Lyca 5GB | Lyca 6GB | Lower total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | £13.50 | £9 | 6GB by £4.50 |
| 6 | £28.50 | £27 | 6GB by £1.50 |
| 7 | £33.50 | £33 | 6GB by £0.50 |
| 8 | £38.50 | £39 | 5GB by £0.50 |
| 12 | £58.50 | £63 | 5GB by £4.50 |
The maths assumes the 5GB plan costs £3.50 once, then £5, and the 6GB plan costs £3 three times, then £6. Payment eight is the crossover point, not a promise that every buyer will have identical renewal dates or retain the promotional eligibility. This is a comparison of payment counts, not automatically a comparison of identical calendar periods.
Choose 6GB if you expect to leave after a few payments, need unlimited UK calls or simply want more UK data. Consider Plan Smart 5GB if you use less data, value its larger listed EU roaming allowance or expect to keep the bundle beyond the introductory months. If the 5GB introductory price is not available to you, recalculate using the checkout price before comparing.
Is 5GB enough for everyday phone use?
Five gigabytes can be sufficient if you use home, workplace or university Wi-Fi for video, downloads and backups, and mobile data mainly for messages, maps, email and browsing. It can be a practical choice for a spare phone, a light-use main number or someone who wants to avoid an unnecessary large allowance.
It is less suitable if you regularly stream video on mobile data, make long video calls, download large apps or use your phone as a laptop hotspot. Check your phone's past data usage before buying; a cheaper bundle stops being good value if you repeatedly need extra data. Our mobile data usage guide helps you choose a sensible allowance.
What happens if you run out of data?
Do not assume further data is free or continues at a reduced speed. Lyca's published general UK-plan conditions discuss additional usage at standard rates once a bundle allowance is exhausted, subject to the plan and available credit. Check your own balance and the current add-on or pay-as-you-go rates. If you commonly exceed 5GB, compare larger Lyca bundles rather than planning to buy repeated top-ups.
Does Lyca 5GB use EE, and will 5G work?
Yes, Lyca uses EE's underlying 4G/5G radio network in the UK, under a partnership with BT Wholesale. This is supported by BT's announcement of the Lyca agreement. It does not mean every Lyca service feature, speed policy or support arrangement is identical to an EE-branded tariff.
Check predicted EE signal at home and work using Ofcom's Map Your Mobile, particularly indoor reception. Lyca advertises 5G, eSIM and Wi-Fi Calling for UK Plan Smart, but the right handset and activation method still matter. For the broader operator picture, see our Lyca Mobile review; for other providers on the same network, see EE-network SIM deals.
International calls and EU roaming: are they useful?
Calls from the UK to other countries: the plan advertises 100 international minutes, but that is not 100 minutes to every number worldwide. Your country, mobile or landline prefix and excluded number types determine whether the allowance is useful. Check the number you actually call before deciding.
Using data abroad: UK Plan Smart advertises up to 5GB of EU roaming data in eligible destinations. This is not an extra 5GB of unrestricted global data. The separate Lyca 6GB offer advertises 2.5GB of included EU roaming, so Plan Smart may suit someone travelling with light UK usage. Check the included countries and Lyca's roaming tethering rules if you intend to share a connection abroad.
If you seldom call internationally or travel, do not pay extra for benefits you will not use. See our guide to SIMs for international calls for wider destination-based comparisons.
Is UK Plan Smart a contract or pay as you go?
UK Plan Smart 5GB is a prepaid 30-day PAYG bundle, not a 12- or 24-month airtime contract. Lyca advertises no conventional Pay Monthly credit check for this product. If you buy only one period, check whether auto-renewal is switched on, how to cancel it and whether unused credit or allowances expire. The separate Lyca 6GB offer uses a different rolling SIM-only payment arrangement, so do not assume all of its cancellation or payment terms match UK Plan Smart.
Our PAYG vs SIM-only explainer covers the difference between prepaid bundles and monthly SIM-only agreements.
Can I keep my number when switching to Lyca?
Normally, yes. For a single UK number, text PAC to 65075 from your current SIM, then give the code to the new provider when requested. Check any early-exit charges first, and do not cancel your old service before arranging the transfer. You can read the full process in our guide to keeping your number.
Keeping your number and qualifying for a discount are separate issues. The earlier UK Plan Smart promotional conditions include an exclusion for certain previous Lyca customers returning with the same number; confirm the conditions that apply to your order if that describes you.
Is this the cheapest SIM-only deal in the UK?
Not by definition. The lowest first payment, the lowest renewal, the cheapest twelve payments and the best data allowance for the money are different comparisons. Lyca's own 6GB option illustrates the point: it costs £3 at first but rises to £6 later. Network reception and the features you actually use matter too.
This page is intentionally about one Lyca product. For the broader UK market, compare SIM-only deals under £10 or the under-£10 buying guide. If your priority is EE coverage rather than Lyca specifically, see the cheapest SIMs on EE's network. Those pages handle the broad cheap SIM-only UK search; this page explains UK Plan Smart 5GB in detail.
Lyca UK Plan Smart 5GB FAQs
Is £3.50 the price every month?
No. It is the advertised introductory payment. Lyca lists £5 for later 30-day renewals. The exact current promotion and eligibility must match your order.
Is 5GB enough for WhatsApp, maps and email?
Often, for someone on Wi-Fi most of the day. Long video calls, streaming, hotspots and automatic downloads can consume far more. Review the usage recorded on your own phone.
Is Lyca's 6GB plan cheaper than the 5GB plan?
On the published payment schedules, the 6GB offer costs less for the first seven payments. UK Plan Smart's lower £5 renewal makes its cumulative total slightly lower from payment eight. For the first three payments, the 6GB price difference is £4.50 in total.
Does the 5GB plan include unlimited UK calls?
No. UK Plan Smart includes 1,000 standard UK minutes and 1,000 texts. Lyca's separate 6GB offer advertises unlimited standard UK minutes and texts.
Does the 5GB bundle work with eSIM or Wi-Fi Calling?
Lyca advertises eSIM, 5G and Wi-Fi Calling for UK Plan Smart. Check the specific handset, software and activation route before relying on those features.
Can I stop after one 30-day bundle?
It is prepaid and has no long minimum term, but check auto-renewal and the cancellation setting to avoid another payment.
Verdict: is Lyca UK Plan Smart 5GB worth buying?
Yes, for the right light user, provided the offered price and conditions apply to your order. UK Plan Smart gives you EE-based coverage, a short prepaid term and useful selected international and EU roaming benefits. The £5 ongoing price should drive your decision more than the first-payment discount.
