Lyca Mobile Review: Is It Any Good in the UK?

Lyca Mobile is worth a look if you want access to EE's UK network, a flexible SIM or an allowance for calls abroad. But a low introductory price is not the whole story. The standard renewal cost, roaming limits and how much help you can get when something goes wrong matter just as much. Here is where Lyca makes sense — and where another provider may suit you better.

Our verdict: who should choose Lyca Mobile?

Consider Lyca if EE coverage works well where you live, your chosen bundle includes the international destinations you call, and its price remains competitive after any introductory offer ends. A 30-day option can be useful if you do not want a long commitment.

Think twice if you need consistently strong customer support, rely on particular features such as Wi-Fi Calling on your exact handset, or want to use a large UK data allowance while roaming. The value depends on the specific plan, not simply the Lyca brand.

What do Lyca Mobile customers say?

Low prices are easy to compare; reliability when something goes wrong is harder. Think about what would happen if your eSIM failed to activate, a payment did not go through or your number transfer was delayed. You may need support more urgently than you need an extra few gigabytes.

In its July 2026 Lycamobile review, Which? reported a 68% customer score, placing Lycamobile 13th out of 15 providers in its January 2026 customer research. This is an overall customer score based on satisfaction and likelihood to recommend. It is not a stand-alone score for customer service or network speed. Read the Which? Lycamobile review.

There is a meaningful limitation: the Lycamobile result was based on 67 respondents, and Which? notes that its final network survey data was not weighted and may not represent the wider population perfectly. That makes it useful independent evidence, not a prediction of your individual experience. It also describes customers surveyed in January, not every subsequent change to the service.

What this means when choosing: if you depend on your phone for work, banking or travel, check the available support routes and account controls before moving your main number. If your phone supports a second SIM or eSIM, trying coverage before porting your existing number may reduce the risk of an inconvenient switch.

Which network does Lyca Mobile use — and is its coverage as good as EE?

Lyca Mobile uses EE's UK 4G and 5G radio network through BT Wholesale. BT announced the partnership in June 2023. Older articles describing Lyca as an O2-based network reflect its previous UK arrangements, not the current network relationship.

If EE has been reliable at your home, workplace and regular travel destinations, Lyca is worth considering. But EE-network access is not the same as buying an EE plan. Features, traffic management, account service and contractual terms can differ between brands; even phones on the same network may behave differently indoors.

Before buying, check your usual locations with Ofcom's Map Your Mobile. Look at home and work separately, especially if you make important calls indoors. A postcode-level coverage result is a prediction, not a guarantee of reception in every room.

If you want to retain EE's underlying network but compare different operators, see our EE-network SIM deals. That page is for selecting a tariff; this review focuses on Lyca's suitability and trade-offs.

International calls: where Lyca could save you money

Lyca's international calling options are a real reason to compare it. A plan that includes minutes to the country you call may work out cheaper than a lower-priced UK-only SIM with international calls charged separately.

For example, imagine you phone family abroad for 90 minutes per 30-day period. At an illustrative out-of-bundle rate of 20p per minute, that would add £18 to a UK-only plan. A suitable bundle with at least 90 eligible international minutes could avoid that extra charge. This is a comparison example, not a quoted Lyca calling rate.

However, an allowance labelled “international minutes” does not necessarily cover every country or number. Before deciding, check:

Use Lyca's published international rates to check out-of-allowance costs and the precise plan terms for included minutes. For a wider buying decision, our guide to SIMs for international calls from the UK compares how other operators handle this.

International calling is not roaming

International calling means phoning another country while you are in the UK. Roaming means using your UK SIM while you are physically abroad. Calling a Polish number from London is not the same service as using data on your phone while visiting Poland. The allowances and charges need to be checked separately.

Lyca roaming: the questions to answer before travelling

Selected Lyca UK plans include roaming in specified destinations, but your UK data allowance is not automatically your roaming allowance. A plan advertised as unlimited in the UK may have a much smaller limit abroad. The destination, data cap, fair-use conditions and out-of-allowance rates must match your exact tariff.

Travel situationWhat to confirm
A short trip to an included European countryWhether the country is covered and how much data the plan allows there
Working from a laptop while travellingWhether personal hotspot/tethering is permitted for your plan and destination
A stop outside the listed roaming zoneWhether a separate add-on is required and the price per MB/minute
Buying a UK Lyca SIM before arrivalWhether first activation must happen in the UK

For a practical example, 10GB of UK data plus 2GB of roaming is not 12GB available everywhere. It is two allowances serving different situations. If you need to share data with a laptop abroad, do not treat successful UK hotspot use as proof the roaming service allows it.

Check Lyca's current EU roaming information and the chosen plan's checkout terms before travelling. For a side-by-side comparison across providers, see our UK SIMs with EU roaming. A UK SIM with roaming and a dedicated travel eSIM are different products; neither is automatically the better option.

Are Lyca's introductory prices really good value?

Lyca promotions can be useful, but the first bill is only one part of the cost. To compare plans fairly, decide how long you expect to keep the SIM and calculate every payment over that period.

An illustrative example, not a live Lyca price: suppose a rolling plan costs £4 for its first three 30-day renewals, then £8 for each of the next nine. The total for twelve 30-day payments is (3 × £4) + (9 × £8) = £84. The average is £7 per renewal, before any upfront fees. Quoting it simply as “£4 per month” would be misleading after the promotion.

Twelve 30-day billing periods are 360 days, not quite twelve calendar months. For 12- or 24-month contracts, calculate the actual minimum commitment instead of mixing different time periods.

Payment typeWhat matters most
30-day rolling or auto-renewing bundleFirst renewal, later price, renewal controls and how to stop it
Prepaid PAYG credit or one-off bundleWhat expires, whether it renews and what happens to unused allowance
Fixed-term SIM contractTotal minimum commitment, any future increases and early-exit costs

Choose by total value, not just price. A cheaper renewal is no bargain if coverage is poor in your home or if the international allowance excludes your destination. Our Lyca deals page shows the currently recorded introductory and later charges where available, with each offer's own last-checked date. Do not assume the prices in an editorial example remain available at checkout.

Does Lyca support eSIM, 5G, Wi-Fi Calling and unlimited data?

Lyca advertises these features on eligible UK products, but availability on one plan does not guarantee eligibility on every deal, device or account. The best way to avoid a frustrating switch is to check the feature you actually need before buying.

FeatureWhat it can help withCheck before you order
eSIMActivate a supported phone without inserting a physical SIMDevice compatibility, selected tariff, QR-code/activation process and transfer rules
5GAccess 5G where compatible service is available5G-enabled phone, local coverage and plan eligibility
Wi-Fi Calling / 4G CallingMake or receive calls in areas with limited indoor signalSpecific phone model, software, account and provider support; do not infer it from EE coverage
Unlimited UK dataHeavy UK data use without a stated domestic GB bucketCommitment, published usage restrictions and the separate roaming allowance
Personal hotspotConnect a laptop or another device through your phoneTerms applying to your plan, particularly while roaming

For example, Lyca's own published UK plan pages advertise eSIM, 5G and Wi-Fi Calling on selected bundles. That is evidence that options exist, not a guarantee for every device or tariff. If eSIM is essential, consult our UK eSIM deals and guide to networks supporting eSIM before committing.

People with light data usage should compare a smaller plan before paying more for unlimited UK data. If you need unlimited plans from multiple networks, use our unlimited SIM comparison.

Switching to Lyca without losing your number

A low price will not feel worthwhile if the change interrupts access to your main number. You can usually keep a UK mobile number when switching by requesting a PAC from your current provider. For one number, text PAC to 65075, then give the code to the new provider. You can check potential early-exit charges first by texting INFO to 85075. Ofcom explains the process.

A useful order is to check coverage and handset compatibility → read the new plan's renewal terms → check any exit charges → activate or test the new service where practical → transfer your number. Do not cancel an old account manually without understanding the switching process, and do not assume removing a SIM stops any existing payments.

See our guide to keeping your number when switching for the broader process. If you are unsure about Lyca's account management, try to find the support and cancellation options before relying on the service for everyday banking or work.

Lyca Mobile versus the alternatives

There is no single winner for everyone. First decide what you are trying to improve: coverage, regular international calls, customer service, flexibility or the real renewal cost.

Final verdict: is Lyca Mobile worth it?

Yes, for the right customer and the right tariff. Lyca's EE-network access, international calling options and range of SIM arrangements make it worth comparing. The important cautions are the later renewal cost, plan-specific roaming limits and mixed independent customer satisfaction evidence.

Before buying, ask three questions: Will it work where I need it? What will I pay over the period I intend to keep it? Does it include the calls and features I actually use? If you cannot answer one of those, check the exact terms or compare another provider rather than rushing into a promotional price.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lyca Mobile on EE or O2?

Lyca Mobile currently uses EE's UK 4G/5G radio network through BT Wholesale. Older references to O2 describe its previous network relationship.

Is Lyca Mobile customer service good?

We have not tested it independently. Which?'s January 2026 survey gave Lycamobile an overall customer score of 68% from 67 respondents; this is not a dedicated customer-service score. Check how to contact support and manage your account before moving an important number.

Does Lyca include international calls?

Selected plans include international minutes to eligible destinations, but countries, number types, allowances and extra-minute rates vary by bundle. Check the specific tariff, not only the headline.

Can I use all my Lyca UK data in Europe?

Not necessarily. Roaming has its own eligibility, fair-use conditions and data caps, even on plans offering unlimited UK data. Check the destination and the allowance for your exact plan.

Does Lyca support eSIM and Wi-Fi Calling?

It advertises those features on selected UK plans. Support depends on the device and the specific plan or account. Confirm both before transferring your primary number.

Is a Lyca PAYG bundle the same as a 30-day rolling plan?

Not always. Prepaid credit, one-off bundles, auto-renewing 30-day allowances and longer contracts can have different renewal and cancellation conditions. Confirm which arrangement you are buying.
