Lyca Mobile vs spusu: Which SIM Should You Choose?

Quick verdict: choose spusu if a current plan includes calls to the European numbers you dial, or if you want a rolling plan with spending controls. Choose Lyca Mobile if one of its bundles covers the international numbers you call, especially a destination-specific package, or if its total cost is lower for the months you will use the SIM. For UK data, calls and texts alone, neither brand wins by default. Compare the live plans below and count every payment, because the first price matters less than the cost over the time you keep the SIM.

These are decision rules, not guarantees. Neither provider includes a given destination, roaming feature or contract type on every offer. The cards show prices and other fields recorded in our catalogue. International-number eligibility and some service restrictions must be confirmed with the provider.

Important if you need international calls: Lyca's separate country-focused calling packages are not automatically included in the standard SIM-only deals below. Check the exact offer's eligible destinations and number types before buying. Clicking View Deal on a standard Lyca SIM-only card does not guarantee that you are purchasing a specialist international-calling package. Check spusu's EU-calling eligibility on the exact plan too.

How Lyca Mobile and spusu differ

Both are UK SIM providers rather than mobile networks of their own. When the current cards list the same host network, the radio coverage broadly overlaps, so plan terms are a better basis for the decision than a claim about masts. Indoor signal, speeds, supported handsets and enabled services can still differ on one network. Check reception for the places you spend time with Ofcom's mobile coverage checker. If the cards name EE as the host, our EE-network SIM comparison shows other brands on the same network.

The bigger difference is the kind of calling each one suits:

Calling an EU number is a different problem from calling a relative on a specific network in another part of the world. If your phone is mostly for UK data, calls and texts, ignore destination marketing you will never use and choose on usable data, renewal cost, cancellation terms and signal.

International calls: which provider to check first

Calling an EU country regularly (Poland, Romania, Germany, Spain and others): start with spusu's qualifying EU-calling terms. Confirm that your tariff includes the destination, whether it covers mobiles, landlines or both, and what happens when the allowance runs out. Then compare it with the specific Lyca bundle you are considering, not with Lyca in general.

Calling a destination outside the EU (Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh and similar): start with Lyca's eligible bundles and any separate country-focused product. A specialist package can save money when a standard UK tariff would charge for every minute. It is not automatically part of the Lyca SIM-only cards on this page, and it may have its own UK data, validity and renewal terms.

CustomerFirst checkWhat would change the answer
Weekly calls to relatives in Poland or Romaniaspusu's current EU-number eligibility against Lyca's included countriesLyca covers the numbers at a lower total cost, or spusu excludes the number type you need
Frequent calls to a number in Pakistan or NigeriaWhether Lyca has a currently eligible specialist or included calling productThe package does not cover the actual network or number, or the combined cost is worse than another option
Occasional calls abroadEach provider's destination rate plus the base UK planPaying per minute costs less than an inclusive bundle
Calls over WhatsApp or FaceTime AudioUK data allowance, coverage and total costYour calls turn out to use conventional international voice minutes

If you make app-to-app calls using WhatsApp or FaceTime Audio over Wi-Fi or mobile data, you do not need international voice minutes for those calls. Ordinary calls to phone numbers, including calls made using your operator's Wi-Fi Calling feature, can still incur international charges. A country named in marketing is not proof that your exact mobile or landline number qualifies. Check current eligibility in Lyca Mobile's international plan information and spusu's international-calling information.

International calls from the UK and roaming abroad are separate services. For other providers, see our guide to SIMs for international calls from the UK.

The real cost: a lower first payment can be the dearer deal

For mostly UK data, the right plan is the cheapest suitable one over the period you will own it. Do not set a promotional first payment on one card against an ordinary renewal price on the other. Compare the same amount of data, or note when one plan gives more, and count every payment.

Write down your start and end dates, then add up:

  1. Start-up cost: the first payment and any unavoidable upfront charge.
  2. Later payments: how many renewals fall at the promotional rate and how many at the ordinary rate, where shown.
  3. Billing period: how long each payment keeps the service active.
  4. Exit terms: any minimum term, unused prepayment, cancellation requirement or out-of-bundle cost.

Why 30 days and a calendar month are different

Twelve 30-day periods last 360 days, not 365. If you buy a separate 30-day package each time and want continuous service for a full year, you generally need a thirteenth purchase. A tariff billed by calendar month follows a different schedule. This is arithmetic, not a claim about either provider's billing, and a thirteenth payment does not apply to every contract.

Illustration, not a current offer: if two identical allowances each cost £10 per renewal, a plan needing 12 payments costs £120 and one needing 13 costs £130 over the same coverage period. The result changes if promotional prices, contract dates or included data differ. The £10 is hypothetical and is not a Lyca Mobile or spusu price.

Use the live cards for recorded current and later prices. If a card does not describe a payment condition clearly, confirm it at checkout instead of assuming that "monthly", "rolling" and "30-day" mean the same thing. For wider options, compare SIM-only deals across providers.

Roaming: the allowance and what you can do with it

Two questions matter: how much mobile data you can use at your destination, and whether the activities you need are allowed. A large UK allowance or an "EU roaming included" label answers neither.

A traveller who needs maps, messaging and browsing has different needs from one who must connect a laptop through a phone hotspot. A plan with a larger roaming allowance can suit the first and still fail the second if its roaming policy restricts tethering. Before choosing Lyca Mobile, read its current EU data-sharing policy. Before choosing spusu, read the roaming plan and hotspot conditions for the plan you picked. Tethering allowed in the UK is not automatically allowed abroad.

Check the exact destination, the usable roaming allowance on the plan (where recorded) and the latest restrictions: Lyca Mobile roaming terms and spusu roaming information. Also check charges after the allowance, long-stay rules and countries outside the included zone. If neither fits your trip, our EU-roaming SIM comparison lists other choices.

eSIM, Wi-Fi Calling and activation

A provider can support eSIM, 5G or Wi-Fi Calling without offering each feature on every tariff or phone. A handset may support eSIM and still need a specific activation method, and Wi-Fi Calling depends on the phone's software and the operator's compatibility list.

If you need service immediately, check that the exact offer supports eSIM, that your phone is supported and when service can start. If you rely on Wi-Fi Calling at home, verify it for the plan and handset before you port your only number. Treat an advertised activation time or spending-control feature as plan-specific, not as a promise for every customer. If either provider fails your requirement, see other UK eSIM SIM-only offers.

Which should you choose?

Choose spusu when a current plan includes the EU numbers and number types you call and the total cost is lower, or when its rolling plan and spending controls suit how you pay. Do not pick spusu for EU minutes until you have confirmed that the specific plan covers your destinations.

Choose Lyca Mobile when a bundle or destination-focused package covers the overseas numbers you dial and lowers your total bill, or when its data offer is cheaper for your period of use. An ordinary SIM-only card does not include a specialist international package.

Choose on price, not brand, when you use only UK data, calls and texts. The best offer has suitable coverage, enough data, the right commitment and the lowest full cost, not necessarily the cheapest first payment. If you need a hotspot abroad, make explicit roaming tethering permission a condition of buying, whichever brand you prefer.

Use the live comparison near the top of this page. View Deal continues to the operator's purchase route and Full plan details shows a recorded plan more closely. If neither provider fits, compare other UK SIMs instead of forcing a winner.

Switching and keeping your number

You can normally keep your UK mobile number when you change provider. Ask your current provider for a Porting Authorisation Code (PAC) and give it to the new one. Do not cancel the old service before the move is arranged if you want to keep the number. Unused credit or an existing commitment may need separate attention.

For the current process and deadlines, see Ofcom's mobile switching guidance and our guide to keeping your number.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper, Lyca Mobile or spusu?

Neither is always cheaper. Compare equivalent live plans over the time you need service, adding every renewal and any upfront or exit cost. A discounted first payment does not show the full cost.

Are Lyca Mobile and spusu on the same network?

The offer cards show each provider's recorded host network. If both list the same network, broad coverage overlaps, but speeds, features and service can still differ. Use a coverage checker for the places you use your phone.

Is spusu better for calling European countries?

It can be, if your plan includes calls to your exact EU numbers and the total cost is lower. Lyca Mobile may also include relevant countries on some products, so compare number eligibility, not just country names.

Does Lyca Mobile include Pakistan or Nigeria calls in every SIM-only bundle?

No. Check the current plan's destination and number-type list. A separate country-focused calling package may be a different purchase from the SIM-only offers on this page.

Can I use my phone as a hotspot while roaming in Europe?

Only if the provider's current roaming policy and your plan allow it. Check data-sharing restrictions, the destination and any separate roaming allowance before relying on a laptop hotspot.

Do Lyca Mobile and spusu support eSIM and Wi-Fi Calling?

Support varies by plan, handset and activation route. Use the eSIM indicator on the live card where it appears, then confirm the provider's supported phones and Wi-Fi Calling requirements before you order.

Can I keep my number if I switch to Lyca Mobile or spusu?

Usually yes. Get a PAC from your current provider and give it to the new one. Keep the old service active until the transfer is arranged.

How we compared Lyca Mobile and spusu

We looked at the decisions that matter for this pair: eligible calls to European numbers against destination-specific calling needs, total cost over the same period, roaming and hotspot use, host-network coverage and handset compatibility. We have not run independent speed, indoor-coverage or customer-service tests.

DealPriceCheck lists selected UK SIM-only offers, not the whole market. The shared catalogue supplies recorded prices, promotional and later charges where available, data allowances, contract labels, host-network information and individual last-verified dates. It does not guarantee that a card shows the full international-number list, roaming tethering permissions or device-specific conditions. Confirm those with the provider's current terms. The page publication date is not an offer-verification date.
