Coverage comes before the brand

The two brands may use different underlying UK radio networks. What counts is the host network shown on the current tariff card, checked against the signal you get where you live, work and travel. If the networks differ, moving from one brand to the other can change your reception even with the same handset.

A coverage map is a prediction, not a promise of speed or indoor signal, so where you can, test a SIM in the rooms that matter before you move your main number. A modest allowance can be better value than Unlimited if you rarely use it. Frequent video streaming or working from a laptop can justify a larger plan.

SMARTY is worth checking first if you use your phone as a domestic hotspot or are buying more than one SIM. If SMARTY's group-plan options suit your household and are available when you order, compare the combined monthly bill instead of pricing each line alone. International calls: where Lyca can win

This is the clearest possible difference for households that call family abroad. Calling an overseas number while you are in the UK is international calling. It is a different service from using your SIM while you travel.

Check SMARTY's international calling prices for calls from the UK and how chargeable calls are handled under your account or add-on terms. For occasional short calls, paying the destination rate can make sense if the UK plan is good value.

Lyca's official offers can include SIM bundles and separately sold international-calling products for eligible overseas numbers, so check what is on sale when you order. For frequent voice calls, a qualifying included allowance can make Lyca the stronger choice. A country named in a headline does not prove that every mobile network, landline or other number type in it is covered. Check the product, how long its allowance lasts and the renewal price. A specialist package may differ from the Lyca SIM-only offers shown above.

Wi-Fi Calling is not the same as WhatsApp or FaceTime Audio. A normal phone call placed over the network's Wi-Fi Calling can still be billed as an international voice call. Do not read included international minutes into a Wi-Fi Calling or eSIM badge.

Compare the real cost, not the first payment

A discounted first payment helps, but it does not tell you what a SIM costs for a holiday, a university term or a year. Pick a shared start and end date, then add every payment you need for uninterrupted service, including the higher renewals after a promotion. Note any minimum commitment and unavoidable charge, and compare equivalent data or account for the difference.

Why billing period matters: twelve 30-day periods cover 360 days, not 365. If a service is sold as separate 30-day purchases, uninterrupted cover for a full year generally needs a thirteenth purchase. A plan charged by calendar month follows a different schedule. This is arithmetic, not a claim that every SMARTY or Lyca product uses one particular cycle.

Hypothetical illustration, not a current offer: if two suitable plans each cost £10 per renewal and one needs 12 payments to cover your dates, it costs £120. If the other needs 13, it costs £130. A cheaper renewal, an introductory offer, different data or an exit condition could reverse that result, so use the exact terms of the offers you compare.

Roaming: the allowance and what you can do with it

Check the card for the recorded eSIM and network details, then confirm handset eligibility, activation steps and Wi-Fi Calling requirements with the operator before you move a number you rely on.

To keep your UK number, request a Porting Authorisation Code (PAC) from your current provider and give it to the new one. Do not cancel the old service before the transfer is arranged. Choose SMARTY first when most of your use is UK data, a domestic hotspot matters or you are comparing group plans for several lines. Confirm its current deal is cheaper for the data and time you need, because a group benefit is not part of the SIM-only cards.

Choose Lyca Mobile first when conventional overseas calling is a big expense and an eligible Lyca product covers the numbers you call. A specialist calling package may be a separate purchase. Lyca can also win on UK data alone when its full price and coverage beat the matching SMARTY offer.
