PAYG eSIM guide
Pay As You Go eSIM UK: Prepaid and No-Contract Plans Compared
Short answer: Yes. UK PAYG eSIMs can give you a UK mobile number, calls, texts and data without a long contract. The choice is between classic pay-per-use credit and a prepaid bundle, which may renew after 30 days. For regular data, compare eligible Lyca Mobile eSIM bundles. For an occasional backup number, check 1pMobile Classic PAYG and its minimum spend before you buy. Unlike Lyca, the specific 1pMobile Classic PAYG eSIM checkout is not yet verified through DealPriceCheck; its tracked cards are separate Boost bundles.
Key facts:
- A UK-network eSIM may include a UK number and ordinary calls and texts. A travel-data eSIM may include none of these.
- A 30-day prepaid offer can renew automatically even without a long contract. Check the next charge.
- Lyca Mobile and 1pMobile use EE coverage. Moving between them will not switch your underlying radio network.
- Lyca normally requires its UK eSIM to be activated in the UK.
- Under 1pMobile's published rules for accounts joining from 1 August 2026, Classic PAYG requires £10 eligible spend per 90-day period, with a shortfall deducted from credit if necessary.
Ready to compare a UK-number eSIM? See eligible Lyca eSIM offers on DealPriceCheck. That page includes current recorded offers with existing affiliate View Deal buttons. For a different payment model, browse 1pMobile's selected Boost bundles, but note that those are not Classic PAYG and their eSIM eligibility must be confirmed at checkout.
What types of PAYG eSIM are there?
Searches for "pay as you go eSIM" cover several payment models. Only plans with an eligible digital ordering or replacement route can actually be activated as eSIM.
| Type | How you pay | Suits | Catch to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic PAYG credit | Top up credit, pay published rates per minute, text or MB | Spare phone, low usage, a second number | Minimum-spend, inactivity and top-up rules can make it dearer than it looks |
| One-off prepaid bundle | Pay upfront for an allowance and validity period | Temporary UK use, spending control | The pack expires; extra use may come from credit or need a new bundle |
| Auto-renewing 30-day bundle | Pay for an allowance, then pay again at renewal | Regular data with no long minimum | Auto-renewal, promotional prices, cancellation settings |
| Rolling 30-day SIM-only agreement | Recurring payment, short commitment | Regular use with flexibility | Not necessarily classic PAYG, and may involve a credit check |
| Travel data eSIM | Prepay for a country or region data pass | A trip, alongside your main UK line | Usually data-only, often no UK number, calls or SMS |
Judge the actual payment and renewal terms, not the PAYG label. For the wider billing comparison, see our PAYG vs SIM-only guide. This page covers buying one as an eSIM.
Is a no-contract eSIM the same as a prepaid eSIM?
No. "No contract" normally means no long minimum term, and the plan can still renew every 30 days. "Prepaid" means you pay before you use the allowance, which says nothing about auto-renewal. Classic PAYG has no monthly subscription but may need minimum activity or spend to keep the line alive.
Ask three questions before buying: What am I paying for now? Will another payment happen automatically? What keeps my number active?
Which UK providers offer a PAYG eSIM?
Lyca Mobile, 1pMobile, giffgaff, Three, Vodafone and O2 have consumer eSIM routes alongside prepaid or short-commitment offers. The decisive question is whether the exact PAYG product has a supported eSIM order or replacement journey. This is a product-selection guide, not a live price list.
| Provider | PAYG or short-term eSIM route | Why check it | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lyca Mobile (EE) | PAYG-labelled bundles and rolling offers with eSIM | UK number, 30-day data choices, international calling on selected plans | Pick the exact eSIM product; UK activation normally required |
| 1pMobile (EE) | Classic PAYG and separate 30-day Boost; eSIM exists at provider level | Credit for occasional use, Boost for regular data | £10/90-day new-customer Classic minimum spend; confirm that the chosen checkout offers eSIM; our cards are Boost bundles without verified eSIM badges |
| giffgaff (O2) | Prepaid and recurring plans; eSIM through its app | O2 alternative, app-based eSIM management | App activation, renewal terms; no confirmed affiliate route for us |
| Three | PAYG Data Packs with eSIM selection and replacement support | Three-network coverage, selectable packs | One-off vs auto-renew packs; roaming limits |
| Vodafone | Pay as you go Plus on compatible eSIM devices | Vodafone network, explicit eSIM checkout | Auto-renew is selectable, so check it is off if you want that |
| O2 | PAYG Big Bundles and Rolling Plans with eSIM available | O2-network alternative with official digital PAYG ordering | Check the selected bundle, number, renewal and digital activation route |
The table covers provider product availability, not a list of buyable affiliate offers on DealPriceCheck. To compare other networks and their eligibility rules, see our guide to UK networks supporting eSIM.
Which options can you actually compare and buy through DealPriceCheck?
| What you are trying to buy | Start here on DealPriceCheck | What this link does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Selected short UK-number eSIM bundles | Lyca eSIM comparison with live offer cards | Check the checkout selection, later payments and any UK activation restriction |
| A renewable 30-day data bundle on EE | 1pMobile selected Boost offers | No verified eSIM flag on these cards; not the classic PAYG top-up product |
| More recorded eSIM choices across networks | UK eSIM deal comparison | This page is not a PAYG-only or credit-only catalogue |
| Short commitments beyond the two providers | No-contract SIM deals | A 30-day rolling agreement may not be prepaid or exempt from credit checks |
Purchase distinction: the Lyca eSIM page contains currently recorded eSIM offers with Awin View Deal. The 1pMobile page contains selected Boost offers with Awin View Deal, but not a verified Classic PAYG eSIM purchase. There is no confirmed dedicated affiliate checkout here for O2, giffgaff, Three or Vodafone PAYG eSIM. These other networks are included to help with coverage and eligibility decisions, not to masquerade as tracked offers.
Lyca Mobile: a practical starting point for prepaid data
Lyca is the first place to look if you want a UK number and a fixed data bundle instead of paying per MB. It sells eSIM plans under both PAYG and SIM-only labels, and some offers carry longer commitments. Renewal and cancellation terms differ by plan, so don't assume they all match.
You choose an allowance and activate an eligible eSIM digitally. Some plans include international calling or roaming benefits, and these are plan-specific. A UK voice allowance, international calls from the UK and mobile data while abroad are three separate entitlements.
Two points can change the value of a deal:
- Activation location: Lyca's UK guidance says its UK eSIM must normally be activated in the United Kingdom, unless the product terms say otherwise. Don't order a UK-number Lyca eSIM from overseas and expect it to activate on arrival abroad.
- Renewal price: an introductory discount doesn't tell you the second, fourth or twelfth payment. Check the recorded later price and the minimum commitment.
Compare selected Lyca eSIM offers with live recorded cards and their existing View Deal routes. Check the final eSIM selection and renewal terms before paying. If you want to browse the wider Lyca range, see all Lyca plans.
1pMobile: Classic PAYG for occasional use, Boost for regular data
1pMobile sells classic pay-per-use credit and separate Boost bundles. Classic PAYG charges 1p per standard UK minute, 1p per UK text and 1p per MB of UK data under its published classic tariff. It can suit a low-use spare number, but the minimum-spend commitment changes the economics significantly.
Under 1pMobile's terms updated in July 2026, the period for the £10 eligible-spend minimum depends on when the customer joined:
| Classic PAYG account opened | Minimum spend period |
|---|---|
| From 1 August 2026 | £10 every 90 days |
| 15 October 2025 to 31 July 2026 | £10 every 120 days |
| Before 15 October 2025 | £10 every 60 days |
For a new account in the first row, using nothing does not mean keeping the number free. If eligible spend is below £10 during the period, 1pMobile may deduct the shortfall from account credit. In some cases its rules allow top-up attempts and service suspension if the obligation cannot be met. This is a minimum spend, not a separate £10 fee added on top of qualifying calls, texts and data. Read the applicable account terms before ordering, especially if the phone will sit in a drawer.
Boost bundles provide a set allowance for recurring 30-day periods and generally cost less than metered data when you use the internet regularly. 1pMobile advertises eSIM ordering for eligible plans and SIM swaps for existing customers. However, its public Classic PAYG product page does not establish the eSIM option for that specific checkout, and DealPriceCheck's current Boost cards do not carry a verified eSIM flag. Confirm digital delivery for the exact product before payment.
If a Boost ends, 1pMobile's published terms say that the service reverts to its standard PAYG arrangements, with a new commitment period starting after the Boost finishes. Turning off bundle renewal is therefore not necessarily a way to keep the number active indefinitely at no cost.
Buying route: Compare selected 1pMobile Boost bundles using the existing Awin View Deal links if a renewable allowance suits you. These cards are not Classic PAYG credit products. For Classic PAYG as an eSIM, get confirmation of the exact digital order option before buying.
For the full cost difference between credit and bundles, see PAYG vs SIM-only: real costs and minimum-spend rules.
O2, giffgaff, Three and Vodafone
These matter if EE coverage doesn't work where you live, or you prefer a different prepaid or activation route.
- O2 confirms eSIM availability for eligible PAYG Big Bundles and Rolling Plans, including a PAYG digital ordering route. Check whether the plan is a one-off bundle or a recurring payment.
- giffgaff runs on O2's network and has new and existing customers install eSIM through its app.
- Three offers PAYG Data Packs with eSIM options. One-off and auto-renewing packs are different products.
- Vodafone Pay as you go Plus supports eSIM on compatible devices and lets you choose the auto-renewal setting at checkout.
You can also inspect selected eSIM-capable offers in the DealPriceCheck catalogue, but it includes monthly agreements and longer contracts, not a verified PAYG-only feed. A general O2, giffgaff or Vodafone card must not be mistaken for that operator's specific prepaid eSIM checkout.
Why isn't Lebara a default PAYG eSIM recommendation?
Lebara's official eSIM help currently limits new-customer activation to the Apple iPhone Air, with a separate SIM-swap route for existing customers. It should not be recommended universally as a UK PAYG eSIM for new customers with other devices. Check eligibility for your exact device if Lebara appeals to you.
Which PAYG eSIM suits your situation?
Start with what the phone is for. A cheap-looking plan is a poor buy if it renews unexpectedly, won't activate on your device or has weak indoor reception.
| Your use | Compare first | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday UK number, several GB a month | Eligible Lyca prepaid or 30-day eSIM bundle | Introductory vs later price, renewal, coverage, eSIM at checkout |
| Rarely used backup number | Investigate 1pMobile Classic PAYG, but verify eSIM availability | New-customer £10/90-day minimum spend; no confirmed Classic PAYG eSIM affiliate checkout |
| Regular data, no long commitment | Lyca 30-day plans and 1pMobile Boost | Renewal rules, total cost |
| Two UK lines on one phone | Eligible second-line eSIM | Dual-SIM support, separate charges on each line |
| A network other than EE | Eligible O2, giffgaff, Three or Vodafone PAYG eSIM | Exact activation method and product terms; no validated dedicated affiliate route in this article |
| Short UK visit | UK-number prepaid eSIM vs visitor data eSIM | UK activation, SMS need, address and residency rules |
| Data abroad, no UK number | Destination-specific travel eSIM | Country coverage, validity, hotspot, speed limits |
For short UK visits, see SIM cards for UK tourists and visitors, which separates visitor eligibility from the resident routes covered here.
How much data should a prepaid eSIM have?
Buy for your mobile data use, not your Wi-Fi use. Too small a bundle means paying for extra data repeatedly. Too large means paying for capacity you never touch.
| Typical mobile use | Allowance to look at | Starting decision |
|---|---|---|
| Calls and SMS, almost always on Wi-Fi | Minimal data or classic PAYG | Work out minimum-spend costs first |
| Maps, email, messaging, light browsing | About 1–5GB | Compare a small 30-day bundle with your real use |
| Frequent social apps, music, some video | About 5–20GB | A renewable bundle usually beats per-MB credit |
| Regular video calls or streaming off Wi-Fi | About 20–50GB or more | Compare the next size up and excess-data rules |
| Heavy downloads, hotspot, unpredictable use | High-data or unlimited | Check fair use, tethering, post-promo price, term |
These are shopping starting points, not promises of how long data lasts. A photo backup or system update can change the maths. If you don't know your usage, our mobile data usage guide shows how to estimate it.
How much could Classic PAYG cost compared with a bundle?
Multiply the per-MB rate by the MB you expect to use, then add calls, texts and any minimum-spend shortfall. Compare that with the full price of a bundle covering the same data over the same period.
Illustrative calculation, not a current offer: 1,000MB at 1p per MB costs £10 in data charges alone. A hypothetical £8 prepaid bundle with enough data would cost less for that use. For a new 1pMobile Classic PAYG account, the published minimum is £10 per 90-day period even if the SIM is rarely used. Qualifying usage counts towards the £10: someone who spends £7 on eligible usage owes a £3 shortfall, not another £10 on top. That is approximately £3.33 per 30 days averaged over one 90-day period, before considering the timing of further commitment periods.
That yields an actionable decision: classic credit is worth considering when you value usage-based charging, but a prepaid bundle usually wins once mobile data use becomes regular. Compare the full cost over your intended duration, not simply a headline pence-per-MB rate.
With twelve consecutive 30-day packs, you purchase 360 days, not 365. Depending on the renewal schedule, 365 days of uninterrupted coverage may require paying for a thirteenth pack. A calendar-month plan bills differently, so compare equal periods rather than assuming 12 payments always cover a year.
How do you buy a UK PAYG eSIM without choosing the wrong plan?
- Check the phone. It must support eSIM and be unlocked or compatible with the network. An EID in the device information is a good sign, but doesn't prove every provider supports your model.
- Pick the payment model. Classic credit, one-off prepaid pack, auto-renewing 30-day bundle or rolling contract are different things.
- Check coverage. Lyca and 1pMobile both use EE. If EE is weak at home or work, look at O2, Three or Vodafone options instead of swapping between two EE-based providers. The Ofcom mobile coverage checker gives postcode-level predictions, though indoor performance isn't guaranteed.
- Check eSIM on the exact offer. The operator must let you select eSIM for this tariff, with an activation method your phone supports. A network can support eSIM while restricting it for some plans, accounts or devices.
- Read the next-payment terms. Is auto-renewal on? What happens when the allowance ends? What if you don't top up or renew? Check the UK activation rule before you travel.
- Buy through an eligible route. For a Lyca eSIM, start from the Lyca eSIM deal cards; for a selected 1pMobile Boost, use the 1pMobile plan cards. Open Full plan details, then View Deal. If that checkout does not offer an eSIM for the specific plan, stop; the Awin link is not proof of digital activation.
Can you keep your existing UK number?
Usually yes. If you're changing network, ask your current provider for a PAC and follow the new network's transfer steps, and don't cancel the old line first. If you're staying with the same provider and moving from a physical SIM to an eSIM, request an account SIM swap instead, since that isn't a network switch.
Our Lyca eSIM activation and switching guide covers both paths. A new eSIM purchase can create a new number, so choose the right route if keeping yours matters.
Does a prepaid UK eSIM work from abroad straight away?
Not necessarily. UK operators may require first activation in the UK or run eligibility checks. Lyca's UK eSIM guidance requires UK activation unless the product's terms say otherwise. After activation, roaming depends on the exact plan. If you need data before you reach Britain, a travel eSIM with a clear destination and activation policy is usually a better fit than a UK-number PAYG product.
Pay as you go eSIM FAQs
Can you get an eSIM on PAYG in the UK?
Yes. Lyca Mobile, O2, giffgaff, Three and Vodafone publish PAYG or prepaid eSIM routes, and 1pMobile supports eSIM on eligible plans. The existence of a network's eSIM facility does not confirm that every classic PAYG tariff is available as an eSIM. Confirm the precise offer and ordering process.
What is the cheapest pay as you go eSIM in the UK?
There is no permanent cheapest option. A low first payment can hide a higher renewal price, and classic PAYG can carry minimum spend. Compare the total cost over your intended period and data use, using current DealPriceCheck offer cards rather than an undated price in an article.
Can I get a UK phone number with a prepaid eSIM?
Yes, with a UK mobile-service eSIM. A data-only travel eSIM may not give you a UK number, calls or SMS. Check this first if you need texts for banking or account verification.
Is there a UK PAYG eSIM without a monthly fee?
Classic PAYG can charge for use instead of a monthly subscription. For 1pMobile, accounts joining from 1 August 2026 have a £10 minimum eligible spend per 90 days; the Classic PAYG eSIM order route itself is unverified, so don't assume you can buy that exact product digitally. Calculate what it costs to keep the line active, not just the call rate.
Can I buy a one-month eSIM without a 12-month contract?
Yes. Eligible prepaid and 30-day plans exist. Check whether you're buying a one-off bundle, an auto-renewing package or a rolling contract, since cancellation terms differ. Compare selected no-contract UK SIM-only deals and confirm each offer supports eSIM.
Does PAYG eSIM mean no credit check?
Traditional prepaid usually avoids the credit assessment attached to many monthly contracts. But not every 30-day plan is prepaid, and providers can still run identity, payment or fraud checks. Confirm the eligibility of the exact order.
Can I use a PAYG eSIM and my normal SIM together?
On a compatible dual-SIM phone, often yes, for example one line for calls and another for data. Check device support, default-line settings and the charges on both accounts. Two lines don't pool their allowances.
Can I order 1pMobile Classic PAYG directly as an eSIM through DealPriceCheck?
Not through a separately verified Classic PAYG eSIM route. Our 1pMobile cards are selected Boost bundles, and the general 1pMobile eSIM information does not by itself prove that its Classic PAYG checkout supports digital activation for your order. Confirm that exact route with the operator rather than following a Boost affiliate link expecting classic credit.
Can I turn off renewal but keep the eSIM number?
It depends on the provider. Stopping a bundle renewal may leave you on a classic PAYG tariff with minimum-spend or inactivity rules, rather than closing the line or keeping it free indefinitely. Read the account terms before relying on the number for verification messages.
Can I switch from a physical SIM to an eSIM on an existing PAYG account?
Often yes, through the provider's replacement process. 1pMobile handles replacement eSIM orders from the account, and giffgaff uses its app for SIM swaps. Don't buy a new number just to change SIM format. Replacement fees and steps vary.
Is a UK PAYG eSIM the same as a holiday eSIM?
No. A UK PAYG eSIM is an ordinary UK mobile service, possibly with a UK number and allowances. A holiday eSIM is normally bought for data in chosen destinations, often without standard voice or SMS. Choose by whether you need a UK number or only temporary data abroad.
Which prepaid eSIM should you choose?
For regular UK mobile data and a UK number, compare a short Lyca eSIM bundle and its first and subsequent payments. See eligible Lyca eSIM cards on DealPriceCheck and use their existing affiliate purchase routes when suitable.
For a lightly used backup number, calculate the real cost of 1pMobile Classic PAYG, including its minimum-spend obligation. The specific digital Classic checkout has not been verified, so it is a research option, not a guaranteed eSIM purchase. For regular data, compare selected 1pMobile Boost bundles. Those bundle links are tracked via Awin, but you must still verify eSIM availability on the chosen product.
If EE reception is poor where you are, look at O2, giffgaff, Vodafone or Three PAYG eSIM options instead of picking another EE-based plan for a promotional price. Check each provider's activation method and terms, and remember that not every plan in our broader UK eSIM comparison is prepaid.
The eSIM is only the delivery method. Choose the payment model, UK number, data allowance, coverage and renewal terms that fit how you'll use the phone.
DealPriceCheck compares selected UK offers rather than the whole market and may earn commission on eligible partner purchases. Prices, eligibility and product terms can change; check the final plan and eSIM options at checkout.
