Best UK SIM Cards for Tourists & Visitors: PAYG vs eSIM

Short answer: If you need a UK mobile number during your visit, start with a prepaid UK SIM or eligible operator eSIM on a short plan rather than a long contract. Lyca Mobile, Lebara, giffgaff, 1pMobile and Three are worth comparing, but delivery, activation and payment eligibility differ. If you only need maps, messaging and internet, a data-only travel eSIM may be simpler: EE even offers a dedicated visitor data eSIM with no UK address requirement, but it does not provide ordinary UK calls or texts. The right choice must work with your phone and payment method, be ready when you arrive and have coverage where you will stay.
Compare eligible current offers: Lyca Mobile SIM deals, Lebara plans and short-term SIM-only offers. Check that the exact offer is prepaid or suitably flexible and that you can activate and pay for it as a visitor. Open Full plan details before View Deal; not every UK SIM-only listing is tourist-eligible.
Which type of UK SIM do you need?
| Your visit | Best starting point | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| A weekend or city break, only maps and apps | Data-only travel eSIM, if your phone supports it | Many include no UK number, SMS or ordinary voice calls |
| One to four weeks, UK number needed | UK prepaid bundle or eligible 30-day eSIM | Delivery, where you can activate, foreign card acceptance and renewal |
| Several weeks across different UK regions | Short prepaid plan on a network that covers your route | A network strong in London can be weak at a rural stop |
| Calls or texts to UK numbers | Local UK voice-and-SMS plan | A data-only travel eSIM is not a substitute |
| Keeping the number for a later trip | Provider with manageable inactivity or minimum-spend rules | Unused SIMs can still cost money or be disconnected |
| Overseas billing address only | Check the operator's prepaid eligibility before buying | Some products require UK residency or UK billing details |
"PAYG" does not always mean pay-per-minute credit. Operators also use it for prepaid data packs that last a set period. A 30-day pack may charge your card again unless you switch renewal off, and a plan labelled "SIM-only" may need a credit check or a longer contract. Our PAYG vs SIM-only guide explains those payment models. This guide covers the visitor's journey.
Which UK SIM options suit tourists?
No provider wins for every visitor. The table lists routes worth comparing, and not every product a network sells is open to visitors.
| Provider | UK network | Why a visitor might choose it | What can rule it out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lyca Mobile prepaid SIM or eSIM | EE | UK number, short-term prepaid bundles, eSIM, international-calling options | eSIM normally must be activated in the UK |
| Lebara physical SIM | Vodafone | Short-term bundles, international calling on eligible plans | New-customer eSIM limited by device; delivery and activation need planning |
| giffgaff rolling plan or eSIM | O2 | App-managed eSIM, flexible plans, UK number | No international SIM delivery; new eSIM needs a plan purchase; check auto-renewal |
| 1pMobile Boost or classic PAYG | EE | UK number, 30-day Boosts or occasional-use PAYG | Classic PAYG has a qualifying minimum spend |
| Three PAYG Data Pack | Three | One-off or auto-renew packs, eSIM on eligible routes | Auto-renew discounts are not one-off prices |
| Vodafone Pay as you go Plus | Vodafone | PAYG with physical SIM or eSIM | Terms require UK residency and a UK billing address |
| EE Travel eSIM (data only) | EE | Dedicated prepaid data pass for visitors; no UK address required | No ordinary UK phone number, voice calls or SMS; needs compatible unlocked eSIM phone |
Lyca Mobile: a good first comparison for a short stay
Lyca suits visitors who need a UK number and want EE coverage. It offers prepaid plans with eSIM or physical SIM, UK calls and data. Some packages include international calling, but eligible destinations and numbers depend on the plan. Your phone must support the SIM format you choose.
Lyca's published guidance says its eSIM must normally be activated in the UK unless the product's terms say otherwise. A QR code received before your flight does not give you working UK service overseas. Plan to have Wi-Fi on arrival and read your plan's activation steps.
To buy, use Lyca's UK SIM-only deals, then the live card's Full plan details and View Deal. You can also browse Lyca's cheap SIM-only range through our partner link. That page does not guarantee a tourist-eligible tariff or the price on a live card. Before you pay, check the first-period price, the renewal price, how to cancel and whether the plan is prepaid.
Lebara: choose a physical SIM unless your phone is on its eSIM list
Lebara can suit you if Vodafone coverage fits your route or you want to call particular overseas numbers from the UK. It sells short-term plans and longer commitments, and the longer ones rarely suit a short holiday. Check the plan type on our Lebara SIM-only page, where the live View Deal buttons use our approved partner routes.
Lebara's current guidance limits new-customer eSIM sign-up to the Apple iPhone Air. Existing customers converting to eSIM follow a separate process. Lebara says you can order an eSIM from outside the UK, but service must be activated in the UK. If you have a different phone, don't order a Lebara eSIM just because your handset supports eSIM. A physical SIM is the safer route if you can arrange collection or delivery.
If international calling matters, check destination eligibility, because "international minutes" never covers every country, landline and mobile number. Our international calls comparison covers that separate decision.
giffgaff: app-based eSIM, but no overseas SIM delivery
giffgaff uses O2's network and manages eSIM plans through its app. Activating a new eSIM normally needs an eligible plan purchase, and a small amount of classic PAYG credit is not enough. Your phone must support the giffgaff app and its eSIM activation process.
giffgaff now delivers physical SIM orders to UK addresses only. If you are still abroad, check whether you can use the eSIM route or arrange delivery to a UK address with permission from the recipient. Older guides suggesting overseas postage are out of date.
Check renewal at activation: giffgaff says a plan bought on a payment card is set to auto-renew. For a one-trip SIM, switch it off in your account if you do not want the next paid period and confirm that the current allowance remains active. Compare giffgaff plans on DealPriceCheck and choose a rolling option rather than an 18-month Good Contract for a short visit. This is a non-affiliate comparison route.
1pMobile: EE coverage with a PAYG commitment
1pMobile sells 30-day prepaid Boosts and classic pay-per-use credit on EE, and the two are different products. An active Boost provides its own paid allowance. Classic PAYG carries a minimum-spend rule: for customers joining from 1 August 2026, it is £10 of qualifying spend or use in each 90-day period. Eligible Boost payments count towards it, so it is not an extra £10 on top of an active Boost.
That is reasonable for a month-long visit but matters if the SIM will sit unused between trips. A low per-minute or per-megabyte rate is not a reason to choose it on its own. Our 1pMobile page shows selected live bundles, and 1pMobile's wider product range is available through our partner link, which is not an exact product checkout. Check delivery, eSIM activation and payment eligibility for your situation.
Three and Vodafone: PAYG with different visitor rules
Three offers prepaid Data Packs as either one-off or auto-renew. For a short visit, the one-off pack is simpler than remembering to cancel a discount tied to automatic renewal. Three also sells eSIM on eligible routes, so confirm your handset and payment method work before you arrive.
Vodafone Pay as you go Plus is different. Its published terms require a UK resident with a UK billing address, and the first plan period starts when you pay, not when a physical SIM arrives. A UK hotel address does not make you a UK resident. If you cannot meet those rules, choose another prepaid route.
EE Travel eSIM: for data on arrival, not a UK phone number
EE has a separate Travel eSIM for UK Visitors. It is a prepaid data-only service that EE advertises for visitors without a UK address. EE says you can prepare it before landing and use it on a compatible, unlocked eSIM phone. That makes it a concrete alternative for someone who needs maps, bookings or messaging apps immediately, rather than a standard resident-focused SIM-only contract.
The trade-off is fundamental: EE says this visitor product does not provide normal calls or SMS. You can use internet-based calling and messaging, but you should not choose it if your accommodation, employer or another service needs to call or text a UK mobile number. Check the selected pass’s duration, when service begins and what happens after it expires. This visitor data pass is not a product listed in DealPriceCheck’s ordinary EE SIM-only catalogue, so do not mistake a standard EE card for the same offer.
Can you buy a UK eSIM before you travel?
Some eSIMs can be ordered before you fly, but when you can install and activate them depends on the product. Lyca and Lebara require UK activation for the relevant operator eSIMs; travel data eSIMs may work differently. Ordering, downloading a profile, starting service and starting its validity period are not necessarily the same event. Check each step before relying on connectivity at the airport.
For this decision, separate two common eSIM product types:
| Local UK operator eSIM | Data-only travel eSIM | |
|---|---|---|
| UK mobile number | Generally yes, when sold as a UK phone plan | Often no; check the product |
| UK calls and SMS | Where the plan includes them | Frequently not included |
| Internet for maps and apps | Yes, within allowance and coverage | Yes, within the purchased allowance |
| Ready before flying | Ordering may be possible; activation may need you in the UK | Some can be installed early; check when validity starts |
| Network and speed | Depends on provider, handset and plan | Depends on the travel eSIM's UK roaming network and policy |
| Main risk | Activation, residence or payment eligibility, auto-renewal | No UK number; different top-up and expiry rules |
If your bank, host, employer or transport provider needs to call or text a UK mobile number, choose a local voice-and-SMS plan and confirm it includes both. Messaging apps may work on data alone but won't replace every voice call or verification SMS, and a UK number does not guarantee a bank or website will accept it for identity checks.
If you need internet the moment you land, a travel data eSIM with documented pre-arrival installation can bridge the gap until you buy a UK SIM. See our UK eSIM plans and eSIM network compatibility guide. They list UK provider options and do not promise that every product can be activated abroad.
Where can visitors buy a physical SIM in Britain?
You may find prepaid starter packs at operator shops, supermarkets, mobile shops or airport retailers, depending on stock. A physical SIM avoids eSIM compatibility problems if your phone has a SIM tray. No airport, terminal or shop is guaranteed to stock a given network or bundle, and a starter pack may not include enough data for your visit.
Ask four questions before you pay in a shop:
- Does the pack include a data allowance, or only starter credit?
- When does the paid period begin?
- Does this specific pack require identity, an address or another eligibility check, and can I pay with a foreign card?
- Can I stop it renewing?
If you order to a hotel or rental, get the property's permission and confirm someone will accept the parcel. Not every provider offers collection, hotel delivery or overseas shipping.
A cheap card on a rack can still cost more than it looks. Your first cost is the starter pack plus any top-up or bundle you need before maps work, not the price printed on the packaging.
Will a foreign phone and payment card work with a UK SIM?
Your phone must be unlocked, but that is not the only test. Some overseas models support different UK bands or lack the VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling or eSIM provisioning a UK provider needs. A 5G logo or an EID does not prove the plan will work, so check the provider's compatibility guidance for your exact model.
Payment is a separate test. A provider can sell prepaid without a conventional credit check and still ask for an address, identity or anti-fraud verification, and it may reject a foreign card. No rule says every UK network accepts every non-UK card. A UK delivery address is not necessarily a valid UK billing address, and you should never give an untrue address or residency status to get around an eligibility rule.
Before you leave home, line up a backup payment method and reliable internet for the order. If a plan demands a UK address or card you can't provide, use an alternative you can access. For the difference between prepaid approval and pay-monthly checks, see our guide to no-credit-check SIM options.
How much data do you need for a UK trip?
Estimate total mobile data for the whole stay, including the days when you cannot use Wi-Fi. There is no reliable universal GB allowance for a tourist: a week of occasional maps is very different from a week of laptop video calls.
| Your main use away from Wi-Fi | What to budget for | What can change the result |
|---|---|---|
| Maps, messages, tickets and searches | Estimate daily usage, then multiply by travel days | Offline maps and hotel Wi-Fi can reduce it |
| Social photos, music and regular browsing | Include background photo upload and app updates | Automatic backups can use far more than planned |
| Video calls, streaming or work | Calculate video-call or streaming hours as well as daily browsing | Picture quality, hotspot devices and long calls dominate |
| Heavy hotspot use | Compare a larger bundle against the total trip duration | Hotspot permission, speed restrictions and coverage matter |
Illustrative calculation: if you budget 0.5GB a day for 10 days, that is 5GB. If you budget 2GB a day for the same trip, that is 20GB. These are planning assumptions, not measured typical tourist usage or operator allowances. Allow headroom for unexpected journeys, uploads and poor Wi-Fi.
For a two-week stay, one 30-day bundle can be simpler than several short packs, provided its activation and renewal rules fit. If your stay crosses a renewal date, add the second period's price. A hypothetical bundle costing £6 at first and £12 on renewal costs £18 over two paid periods, not £6. That is not a quote from any operator.
See how much mobile data you need for detailed scenarios. If you plan to share data with a laptop, read the hotspot and tethering conditions first.
Does a UK tourist SIM work in Ireland or the rest of Europe?
Not automatically. UK data and calling allowances are not roaming allowances, so a SIM bought for London may not suit Dublin or Paris. The Republic of Ireland is outside the UK, while Northern Ireland is part of it. Operators apply different rules to each, and plans can cap roaming data even when UK data is unlimited.
If you are travelling on, check each country, the included roaming allowance, fair-use conditions and any pass or extra-data charges on the exact prepaid plan. A separate travel eSIM covering your whole itinerary is another option. Our EU roaming comparison covers UK-plan roaming rules. This page is about connecting while visiting Britain.
What should you do when you land in the UK?
- Use a trusted Wi-Fi connection at the airport or your accommodation, particularly if you must receive an eSIM QR code, open the provider app or verify your account.
- Check your phone is unlocked and compatible, and that activating the eSIM is allowed while you are in the UK.
- Check what the payment actually buys. A top-up may add PAYG credit rather than a data bundle. Some tariffs let you use data from that credit at potentially costly per-MB rates, so confirm the pack or rate before turning mobile data on. Save the order email and account login.
- Install and activate the SIM following the operator's instructions. If data fails, check the selected data line and follow provider APN guidance rather than immediately deleting the eSIM.
- Avoid home-network roaming charges. Set the new UK SIM/eSIM as your mobile-data line and check whether your phone can automatically switch data back to your home SIM. Turn off home-line data roaming if your home tariff would charge for it, while keeping that number reachable if you need security texts.
- Test the service. Open a website and, if you bought a UK voice-and-SMS plan, test an ordinary call and text. Check reception where you will stay.
- Check auto-renewal immediately. If you only need the first paid period, disable renewal using the provider's controls and confirm whether this leaves the current paid allowance running.
To check signal before you order, use Ofcom's Map Your Mobile with your accommodation postcode and destinations. It compares host networks, not individual prepaid plans, and its predictions can't promise signal in your hotel room. EE carries Lyca and 1pMobile, Vodafone carries Lebara, O2 carries giffgaff, and Three runs its own network.
How do you avoid another charge after your holiday?
Prepaid bundles can renew automatically: "no contract", "pay as you go" and "30-day" do not promise one-off billing. For example, giffgaff says plans paid by card are set to auto-renew; Three offers both one-off and auto-renew Data Packs. Check the selected plan, how renewal is charged, any later promotional price and whether switching renewal off leaves your existing allowance active.
Set a phone reminder before the next billing date, which is not necessarily one calendar month after you arrive. To keep a UK number between visits, read the inactivity and minimum-spend terms. Removing the SIM does not stop costs or keep the number indefinitely. A long-term SIM is a different goal from buying data for a holiday.
Keep auto-renewal on only if you have checked the continuing price and expect to use the service again. Otherwise confirm renewal is off, note any notice period and save the confirmation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best UK SIM card for tourists?
It depends on whether you need a UK number. For a UK number and a prepaid plan, compare Lyca on EE, Lebara on Vodafone and giffgaff on O2, and consider 1pMobile or a one-off Three PAYG pack. For internet only, a data-only travel eSIM can be enough. Choose a product you can actually buy, activate and manage during your stay, not simply the one advertising the largest data allowance.
Can a tourist get a UK data eSIM without a UK address?
Yes, for certain products. EE explicitly advertises its data-only Travel eSIM for UK visitors without a UK address. It does not include an ordinary UK mobile number or SMS. That is different from a local operator voice-and-text SIM, which may have its own address, payment or activation rules.
Can a tourist buy a prepaid UK SIM without a UK address?
Often, but not every product accepts every non-resident. A shop-bought physical SIM can be easier to get than an online plan, and some prepaid services still require residency, billing or identity details. Vodafone Pay as you go Plus, for example, requires UK residency and a UK billing address. Check the exact operator and plan, not the PAYG label.
Can I activate a UK eSIM before arriving?
Sometimes you can order or download the details before you travel, but activation rules differ. Lyca and Lebara require UK activation for the relevant eSIM service. A data-only travel eSIM may follow a different policy, so check the product and when its validity starts.
Which UK SIM gives me a British phone number?
A UK operator's prepaid voice-and-SMS SIM or eSIM generally gives you a UK mobile number, while a data-only travel eSIM may not. UK mobile numbers normally begin `07` domestically. From abroad, use the `+44` prefix and drop the leading `0`. Confirm your plan includes ordinary calls and SMS.
Is an eSIM better than a physical SIM for visitors?
An eSIM avoids waiting for delivery and makes dual-SIM travel easy when your phone and provider support it. A physical SIM can be simpler if the operator restricts eSIM sign-up, your phone is incompatible, or you would rather buy from a staffed shop on arrival. Neither format improves signal, value or speed.
Can I use WhatsApp without a UK phone number?
Yes. WhatsApp and similar apps work over an internet connection once your account is set up, so a data-only eSIM can be enough. Apps may still need SMS or phone verification when you register or re-register, so keep your home number reachable for security codes and account recovery.
What is the cheapest UK SIM for a one-week visit?
No option is permanently cheapest. Compare the total first payment, any starter credit or bundle purchase, coverage, whether you need a UK number, and delivery and activation costs. A low first-period price only helps if you qualify and can activate the service. Check live UK SIM-only prices and filter for short terms.
Do UK tourist SIMs include EU roaming?
Not universally. Included roaming, destination lists and fair-use caps vary by provider and plan. This matters if your trip includes the Republic of Ireland or another European country, but ordinary UK use does not need it. Check the exact plan before you cross a border.
Can I keep my UK tourist SIM for my next trip?
Possibly, but a number can be lost after long inactivity or non-payment, and classic PAYG may require minimum qualifying spend. Compare the cost and activity conditions for the gap between visits, not just the first bundle's price. A SIM left in a drawer will not necessarily stay active.
Verdict: buy for arrival, not for the advertised allowance
If you want a UK number on a prepaid plan, start with Lyca on EE, Lebara on Vodafone and giffgaff on O2. Consider 1pMobile if EE coverage and its payment rules suit you, or a one-off Three PAYG pack. If you only need internet, compare purpose-built data-only travel eSIMs, including EE’s UK visitor offer, but do not mistake one for a plan with a UK number or ordinary SMS.
Four tests decide the purchase: can you qualify and pay, can you activate when you need to, does the network work where you are going, and can you stop renewal before it costs more than the trip warrants? Answer those before you chase gigabytes.
Compare current Lyca Mobile plans, Lebara offers and 1pMobile short-term bundles, read Full plan details, and use View Deal only when the tariff meets your visitor needs. No provider is the best fit for every arrival, handset or itinerary.
Plans, eligibility, network conditions and prices can change. DealPriceCheck compares selected UK offers and may earn a commission on qualifying partner purchases. Confirm activation, the full payment schedule and final terms before ordering.
