International calling guide

Best SIM for Calling Thailand from the UK

For regular phone calls from the UK to Thailand, start with Lyca Mobile and Lebara, but compare the Thailand minutes in the exact package, not just the SIM price. Selected ordinary UK plans from both providers list Thailand for international calling. Lyca has also published an All In One Plus 20 bundle advertising unlimited calls to selected countries including Thailand, subject to its fair-use and eligibility terms. That makes a higher-volume option worth checking instead of assuming every plan stops at 100 minutes.

The best buy changes with the person you call. If most conversations happen on LINE, you may only need an affordable UK data SIM. If you often ring a Thai mobile or landline through your phone's normal dialler, a suitable international allowance matters. And if you already pay EE, Three or Vodafone, an eligible calling add-on may cost less than changing networks.

This guide is for calls from Britain to ordinary Thai +66 mobile and landline numbers. Using a UK SIM while visiting Thailand is roaming, and needs a different comparison.

The real choice: 100, 500 or unlimited-labelled minutes

Start with how many chargeable minutes you make to Thai +66 numbers in one renewal period. Then match those minutes to a product that explicitly lists Thailand and covers the number type you call. A UK SIM advertising 50GB of data does not automatically include 500 minutes to Thailand.

Documented Lyca and Lebara product examples

The operator examples below were reviewed on 22 October 2026. These are dated product snapshots, not the live prices in DealPriceCheck’s catalogue. In particular, the number of GB on a live card does not establish the Thailand-calling entitlement.

Published product exampleInternational-calling benefit described by the operatorAdvertised price at reviewWhat matters for Thailand
Lyca All In One Plus 15500 international minutes, with Thailand on this product’s published list£15 / 30 daysShared international pool; check standard mobile/landline eligibility
Lyca All In One Plus 20Unlimited-labelled international minutes, Thailand listed£20 / 30 daysFair use, online/new-customer eligibility and 30-day activation requirement
Lebara 50GB 30-day example500 international minutes in its published UK range£15 / 30 daysThailand appears on a published Lebara destination list; verify that the selected offer uses that list

For Lyca Plus 20, the operator explicitly lists Thailand within its unlimited-labelled eligible countries. The £20 offer is online-only for new customers, requires activation within 30 days of ordering and excludes some previous customers porting the same number; a fair-use policy applies. These limits matter before switching, not just in the small print. Lyca's list indicates standard mobiles and landlines unless a country is specially marked.

Lebara's published destination list includes Thailand, and its UK international-calling page says eligible allowances cover standard overseas mobiles and landlines. For the 50GB/500-minute example, confirm that your chosen checkout product uses the relevant destination list. A separate Lebara offer carrying an "unlimited international" label is not included as a verified Thailand option here because its product-specific Thailand entitlement has not been established.

Count ordinary +66 calls, not hours spent on LINE

Three realistic calling patterns show why the tier matters:

Calls made through your UK phone's normal diallerApproximate voice timeSensible comparison
Eight 10-minute calls in one renewal period80 minutesA qualifying 100-minute package versus the rate on your current SIM
Twelve 20-minute calls240 minutesA 500-minute bundle versus an existing-account add-on
Twenty-five 25-minute calls625 minutesA higher allowance or an eligible unlimited-labelled product, because a 500-minute pool is not enough

These are conversation minutes, not a guaranteed count of billable minutes. Call rounding, shared destination pools, fair-use provisions and excess charges can change the result. If you also call another country from the same allowance, subtract those minutes before deciding whether your Thailand calls fit.

A bigger allowance is not automatically better value. If almost all your long conversations happen on LINE, you may have 80 minutes of telephone calls but hours of internet calls. Buy for the 80 chargeable voice minutes, not the total time you spend talking.

The overlooked alternative: a few calls at Thailand PAYG rates

Lebara's official Thailand PAYG rate page displayed 3p per minute to Thai landlines and 5p per minute to Thai mobiles when reviewed on 22 October 2026. These figures apply to the rate-page's PAYG context, not automatically to every plan or specialist number. You need the appropriate PAYG credit; check the rate and charging increments relevant to your account.

At that dated rate, 80 billable mobile minutes cost £4, 240 mobile minutes cost £12, and 240 landline minutes cost £7.20, before any other applicable charges. These are simple minutes × PAYG rate illustrations, not all-in monthly SIM prices. A light caller may be better off using credit rather than buying a second £15 or £20 subscription. For someone replacing an everyday UK SIM, compare the whole replacement-plan cost, not calling charges in isolation.

If you want a new primary SIM, compare Lebara's current UK plans and use its international-calling information through the existing approved affiliate route. That destination explains the international offering; it is not a direct checkout for a particular PAYG rate or bundle.

Lyca versus Lebara for a new UK SIM: choose the exact benefit

Neither is the automatic winner for every Thai number or customer. Both can combine everyday UK calls, data and selected international destinations on one SIM. Compare an actual Lyca product with an actual Lebara product over the same renewal period, using the ongoing price instead of an opening promotion.

Is Lyca good for calling Thailand?

Yes, for moderate to frequent conventional calling when the selected product is eligible. Lyca Plus 15 explicitly lists Thailand within its 500-minute international pool. Plus 20 explicitly lists Thailand for its unlimited-labelled international offer, with the fair-use and new-customer restrictions described above. Neither statement makes an ordinary UK data card automatically Thailand-qualified.

Someone making hundreds of ordinary voice calls a month should compare the specific Plus product. Someone using only a few minutes may prefer a cheaper standard plan with an eligible allowance. Don't buy a generic 6GB UK card on the false assumption that it includes unlimited Thailand calls.

Lyca uses EE's UK network. If EE covers your home and workplace well, that is a reason to look at it, though a shared network does not guarantee identical features, speeds or terms. Compare current Lyca UK tariffs for domestic data, the normal price and commitment length. Explore Lyca's international calling plans using DealPriceCheck's approved affiliate link to find the overseas-calling product. It does not guarantee direct checkout for All In One Plus 15 or Plus 20.

Is Lebara good for calling Thailand?

It can be, when the exact offer carries the Thailand allowance you need. Lebara lists Thailand as an international destination and says qualifying allowances cover standard overseas mobiles and landlines. Its UK range publishes 100-, 500- and unlimited-labelled international-minute examples, but those labels alone do not verify how much Thailand calling a particular checkout product supplies.

Lebara runs on Vodafone's UK network. It suits you if Vodafone coverage works well, you prefer its plan terms or a verified Thailand-eligible package meets your calling volume at a lower total cost. Don't assume a 12-month commitment and a rolling 30-day product share the same cancellation rules.

Start with Lebara's live UK offers on DealPriceCheck. To check the international calling arrangement, use Lebara's international-calling section, a confirmed affiliate link. It is an information page, not a guaranteed direct checkout for a particular unlimited or 500-minute product.

For wider differences between the brands, see Lebara vs Lyca Mobile. If you also call several countries, our international-calling SIM guide covers the wider choice. This page stays focused on calls from Britain to +66 numbers.

Already have a UK SIM? Compare the add-on with the cost of switching

A calling add-on can be cheaper than switching if your existing UK plan works well or you would incur an exit charge. Compare the extra charge for Thai calls with the cost of a whole replacement SIM, including any commitment that would continue.

Does EE include Thailand?

EE's Pay Monthly International add-on lists Thailand among its eligible countries. By contrast, the published PAYG Rest of World minutes pack does not include Thailand. That does not mean every PAYG call to Thailand is impossible: the standard international per-minute service and any other eligible option are separate from that particular pack. At the 22 October 2026 review, EE advertised 500 international minutes for £15 per month on an eligible recurring add-on. These are extra minutes on top of an underlying EE plan, not a £15 standalone UK SIM, and EE's other international products have different destinations, allowances and charges.

Compare the extra cost in your account before you shop for a replacement line. Our EE-network SIM comparison covers underlying UK plans and doesn't turn an ordinary EE-network SIM into EE's international add-on.

Does Three include Thailand?

Three's Pay Monthly Call Abroad country list names Thailand, whereas its standard PAYG Call Abroad pack has a different destination list and does not name Thailand. This is about pack eligibility, not an assertion that a PAYG SIM cannot ever dial Thailand at standard international rates. At the 22 October 2026 check, Three described recurring Pay Monthly options with a 100-minute tier and an unlimited-labelled tier. These can suit an existing eligible Three customer who already needs their normal service.

Don't buy the standard PAYG Call Abroad pack assuming it covers +66 because the product name matches. Check your account, number type, allowance and renewal. If you're changing your UK SIM anyway, compare the full cost of Three UK plans with an eligible Lebara or Lyca alternative, not just the price of a Three add-on.

Does Vodafone include Thailand?

Yes, for eligible products. Vodafone includes Thailand in its Pay Monthly International Saver destinations; it publishes separate 100- and 500-minute Extras that renew monthly until cancelled. At the 22 October 2026 review, its published prices were £6.95 for 100 minutes and £14 for 500 minutes. These prices are in addition to your Vodafone UK plan and must not be compared as though they were standalone SIM offers. Vodafone PAYG and PAYG Plus use different international products.

That makes Vodafone worth checking for an existing customer, especially if leaving a plan costs money. A new Vodafone SIM plus an Extra is a different purchase from a Lebara SIM with an included allowance. For wider differences, see Vodafone vs Lebara.

What about 1pMobile, O2 and specialist international SIMs?

1pMobile Boosts do not include international call minutes. Calls to Thailand use separate account credit at the destination rate: the brand's “1p” UK pricing does not mean calls to Thai numbers cost 1p per minute. Also account for its published call-rounding rules and minimum credit-use requirements, which can matter to somebody who rarely calls abroad.

That can still suit you if you make very few ordinary Thailand calls and mainly use LINE. First price the actual +66 mobile or landline rate and credit requirements. Our 1pMobile deals compare domestic service, while 1pMobile international calling rates can be checked using the approved affiliate route.

If you're already with O2, check your Thailand rate or eligible international Bolt On in your account. A generic "calls from" rate doesn't establish the cost of calling a Thai mobile or Bangkok landline.

A separate market alternative is Talk Home Mobile: its Global Standard and Global Pro pages include Thailand in their international destination lists. Its headline "minutes/SMS" wording still needs careful interpretation against the package's detailed voice terms. It is not a DealPriceCheck live offer, but it gives buyers who need mainly international voice calling a useful alternative to compare against the total cost of Lyca and Lebara.

LINE versus a call to +66: two different kinds of communication

LINE can replace many paid international voice calls, but not every call to a +66 number. LINE is widely used for keeping in touch in Thailand. When both callers have LINE and an internet connection, LINE-to-LINE voice and video calls use Wi-Fi or mobile data, not the international voice minutes on your SIM. That can be the cheapest practical way to speak regularly to relatives, and it matters more to the buying decision than an extra few UK gigabytes.

An app is not a universal replacement for a phone call, though.

A good compromise is a value UK SIM-only plan for everyday connectivity, plus a smaller international voice allowance for people you can't reach on LINE. That can beat an unlimited-labelled overseas bundle for hours of calling you'd make over Wi-Fi anyway.

When is a sensible time to call someone in Thailand?

Thailand is six hours ahead of the UK during British Summer Time and seven hours ahead when the UK is on Greenwich Mean Time. Thailand observes UTC+7 all year, while the UK switches between GMT and BST.

When you call from the UKApproximate time in ThailandPractical implication
1pm UK, while British Summer Time applies7pm ThailandConvenient for some after-work conversations
12 noon UK, while Greenwich Mean Time applies7pm ThailandA similar Thai evening slot in winter
9pm UK, during British Summer Time3am next day in ThailandUsually a poor time for a family call
9pm UK, during Greenwich Mean Time4am next day in ThailandAlso unsuitable unless arranged in advance

Someone in Britain who waits until their own late evening to phone family may be calling in the middle of the Thai night. If you usually speak after work, a prearranged UK lunchtime or early-afternoon call can be more useful than buying extra minutes you'll struggle to use.

Thailand's UTC+7 standard is documented in the Thai government's time guidance. Exact UK clock-change dates vary by year, so use your phone's clock for a specific appointment.

How to dial Thailand from the UK: +66 and no domestic zero

Dial +66 and drop the initial zero from the Thai domestic number. You can usually dial 0066 instead, but saving contacts with +66 is clearer and works better when you travel.

Number as written in ThailandDial from the UKNumber type
`081 234 5678``+66 81 234 5678`Illustrative Thai mobile
`02 123 4567``+66 2 123 4567`Illustrative Bangkok geographic landline
`053 123 456``+66 53 123 456`Illustrative Chiang Mai geographic landline

These are format examples, not real contacts or guarantees of reachability. Thailand's Tourism Authority describes the +66 country code, the Bangkok (0)2 area code and the Chiang Mai (0)53 area code in its telephone guidance.

Does the number type matter?

Yes, sometimes more than the city. International allowances normally refer to standard mobiles and landlines. A Thai bank may publish a domestic four-digit service number, and a hotel may advertise a switchboard, premium number or a number that forwards calls. These aren't always treated as ordinary Thai landlines or reachable from overseas. Ask for the organisation's full internationally diallable +66 number and check for any number-type exclusion before a long call.

Calling a +66 number from the UK is international calling, and using your UK SIM while physically in Thailand is roaming. Neither benefit proves the other is included. Calling a UK +44 number whose owner happens to be in Thailand is normally a call to a UK number from your side, subject to your UK tariff, and the recipient's roaming terms are a separate matter.

Work out the cost that would actually disappear

Base the comparison on the bill that actually changes, not the biggest international-minute badge.

Take two people who each make around 240 minutes of conventional calls to Thailand in a typical renewal period. Both have a UK SIM. One is free to replace it and the other has an expensive remaining contract. The same 500-minute Thailand-eligible plan might suit both, but their actual savings differ.

DecisionThe correct cost calculationCommon mistake
Replace your everyday UK SIMNew SIM's ongoing cost + any uncovered Thailand charges + any exit costs, minus the old bill that genuinely stopsComparing only the promotional first payment
Stay on your existing SIMExisting UK bill + Thailand add-on fee or per-minute chargesForgetting the base UK bill, or assuming an add-on is a whole SIM
Keep two SIMsExisting UK bill plus the full cost of a second Thailand-calling SIMCounting the second SIM as a replacement when both bills continue
Use LINE for most callsCurrent data/Wi-Fi cost + charges for the few ordinary calls still neededBuying hundreds of international voice minutes for internet calls

For example, 12 calls of 20 minutes make 240 minutes before charging increments. An eligible 500-minute bundle could cover that, but a 100-minute pool would leave 140 minutes to be charged or handled another way. You can't find the cheapest option without the actual excess-call rate, renewal price and remaining minimum term. Don't invent a per-minute rate or assume the extra minutes are free.

Short calls need attention too. Under a hypothetical whole-minute charging method, ten calls of 61 seconds each would count as 20 billable minutes, although the combined conversation is just over ten minutes. This is not a claim about how Lyca or Lebara charge a specific bundle, so check the operator's rules.

Can you keep your number if you switch?

Usually yes. Text PAC to 65075 from your current SIM and give the code to the new provider. Check early-exit charges and whether the promotional product accepts your customer or porting situation before you start the move. Ofcom's mobile switching guidance explains the process. A second SIM or eSIM may avoid moving your number, but check that your phone supports it and that the right line is selected before each +66 call.

What is the best way to call Thailand from the UK?

If you need a new everyday UK SIM and regularly make ordinary calls to Thai numbers, compare the actual Lyca and Lebara products with verified Thailand eligibility. For heavy calling, Lyca's All In One Plus 20 example makes a fair-use-limited unlimited-labelled product worth checking before you accept a small allowance by default. At moderate volumes, compare a suitable 100- or 500-minute tier, plus UK coverage and the real renewal cost.

If you already pay for EE Pay Monthly, Three Pay Monthly or Vodafone, review the Thailand-eligible option you can add to your account, which may beat a replacement SIM. EE and Three PAYG users in particular shouldn't confuse those products' destination lists with their Pay Monthly versions.

If most of your long conversations happen on LINE, focus on reliable UK data and keep conventional international calling for people and organisations you can't reach through an app. If calls are occasional, check a genuine Thailand-specific per-minute rate instead of paying for unused minutes every renewal.

Choose the arrangement that reaches the Thai numbers you actually call at the lowest sensible total cost, not the one with the biggest UK data allowance.

Questions about calling Thailand from the UK

Which UK SIM is best for frequent calls to Thailand?

Compare Thailand-eligible Lyca and Lebara packages at product level. Lyca has published a qualifying unlimited-labelled international product that explicitly lists Thailand, subject to fair-use and eligibility conditions. Lebara publishes smaller and larger international-minute tiers, but the exact product must include Thailand. Existing EE, Vodafone or Three Pay Monthly customers should check their add-ons before changing SIMs.

Does Lyca offer unlimited calls to Thailand?

One Lyca product has: the All In One Plus 20 example checked on 22 October 2026 advertised unlimited international minutes with Thailand on its included-country list. That doesn't mean all Lyca plans offer unlimited calls to Thailand. Check the fair-use, number-type, new-customer and activation terms on the exact offer.

Does Lebara include calls to Thai mobiles and landlines?

Thailand appears in Lebara's published international destination list, and Lebara says qualifying international allowances cover standard mobile and landline calls. Confirm the selected product's Thailand allowance, the recipient's number type and any exclusions. A standard UK tariff card alone isn't enough evidence.

Does EE PAYG Rest of World include Thailand?

No. Thailand is not in the published list for EE's standard PAYG Rest of World minutes pack checked on 22 October 2026. EE's Pay Monthly International add-on is separate and does list Thailand. PAYG per-minute calling may still be possible: it is the pack's inclusive Thailand minutes that are unconfirmed, not the technical ability to dial +66.

Is Thailand included in Three Call Abroad?

Yes for the eligible Pay Monthly Call Abroad add-on. Three's standard PAYG Call Abroad pack lists different destinations and does not list Thailand. Confirm your account type, the intended number and the add-on; ordinary PAYG international charges are a separate question.

Do LINE and WhatsApp calls count as international minutes?

No. App-to-app calls use internet data, not conventional international voice minutes. A call made through your phone's normal dialler to +66, even with Wi-Fi Calling on, can still be billed as an international voice call.

What is Thailand's dialling code from the UK?

Use +66, then the Thai number without the domestic opening zero. For example, an illustrative `081 234 5678` mobile number becomes `+66 81 234 5678`.

Is Thailand six or seven hours ahead of the UK?

Six hours ahead during British Summer Time and seven hours ahead when the UK is on Greenwich Mean Time. Thailand stays on UTC+7 all year.

Can I keep my UK number if I change providers?

Usually yes. Request a PAC from your current provider and give it to the new one. Check any early-exit charge and the specific promotional plan's rules on new customers and number transfers first. If your phone supports dual SIM, a second line is another option, but it adds cost while the main SIM stays active.

DealPriceCheck compares selected UK SIM providers and may earn commission from qualifying partner links. Prices, destination lists, international allowances and renewal terms can change; confirm the exact offer and Thai number type before buying.
