Provider comparison

EE vs 1pMobile: Is EE Worth Paying More For?

Quick verdict: 1pMobile uses EE's underlying UK network, so paying EE directly is not automatically necessary to get an EE-based signal. Start with 1pMobile if you mainly want UK calls and data on a flexible 30-day bundle without paying for premium extras. Consider EE direct if the exact plan includes advanced 5G, priority features, more useful roaming, support or subscriptions that justify the full cost. Both sell different household options. Neither provider is always cheaper, faster or better.

Compare current EE and 1pMobile SIM deals

Selected providers — not whole of market. Each card shows its own last verified date. Prices and availability can change; check the provider’s website before purchase.

Use the live cards above as your starting point. Compare the allowance, last-verified date, payment schedule and Full plan details, then use the relevant View Deal. You can also see the wider 1pMobile SIM range we track and EE's tracked SIM-only offers. If the displayed deals are not like for like, compare the same usable data level. The lowest first payment does not decide the winner.

Does 1pMobile really have the same EE coverage?

Broadly, yes: the underlying radio network is the same, though not necessarily every service. 1pMobile is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that uses EE's infrastructure. If an EE SIM already works where you live and work, that is a good reason to consider it. Moving from EE to 1pMobile does not mean switching to O2, Three or Vodafone masts.

Sharing a network does not guarantee identical 5G technology, handset provisioning, Wi-Fi Calling, roaming, peak speeds or customer service. It also does not show that every 1pMobile user is pushed behind EE customers in a busy area. EE offers premium prioritisation on particular tariffs, which is different from proof of a blanket EE-over-MVNO hierarchy.

Before you move a number you depend on, use Ofcom's Map Your Mobile to check predicted EE reception at your postcode, your workplace and the places you travel to. The indoor forecast does not guarantee signal inside your building. If you need your phone for work, try the new SIM in your usual locations before you port your number. Our MVNO coverage and speeds explanation covers the wider technical differences without assuming they apply to every 1pMobile tariff.

Is 1pMobile slower than EE?

Not automatically. A cheaper EE plan can have a published maximum speed, while 1pMobile's ordinary 30-day Boosts are promoted without a general speed cap. "Uncapped" does not guarantee a download speed, and it does not prove 1pMobile is faster in real use.

Service you are consideringSpeed question to checkWhy it matters
EE No Frills or EssentialsDoes the deal have a maximum download-speed tier?A lower-priced EE plan is not necessarily EE's fastest
EE premium SIM-onlyDoes that exact contract say uncapped, and does it include advanced 5G?Uncapped speed and 5G+ are separate capabilities
1pMobile 30-day BoostNo general speed cap is advertised, but what are the service and heavy-use rules? An uncapped headline does not remove congestion or fair-use policies

Network demand, your handset, indoor signal, spectrum, local infrastructure and supported technology all affect what you experience. A published cap is a ceiling, not a measured average. A test of EE as a network cannot be relabelled as measured 1pMobile speeds.

For browsing, maps, messaging, streaming and everyday video calls, enough data and dependable reception usually matter more than the highest theoretical speed. Heavy tethering, large uploads and packed events make advanced network access more relevant. Both operators publish limits or network-management rules for unusually heavy use of unlimited data. Check the current policy for the exact product instead of assuming unlimited means full peak speed in every situation.

Does paying EE buy higher network priority?

Not on every plan. 5G+ access, an uncapped speed tier and queue priority are three different things. Some EE tariffs offer 5G+ without giving you every premium congestion feature. EE's Network Boost is available on eligible premium products and aims to improve data performance in crowded places. Fast Lane is a separate feature requiring an eligible Full Works Plus plan, 5G+ SIM and compatible phone, and 5G+ coverage in a busy area. Fast Lane is not included with every EE SIM-only tariff; the Full Works Plus product you find may be a handset contract, not a standalone SIM.

These features do not promise an exact speed, and they do not prove a standard EE tariff always beats 1pMobile. If priority is why you would pay extra, check the exact product's eligibility in EE's Fast Lane guidance before you pay. If the feature is not on the SIM-only offer you can buy, do not count its value in your comparison.

When does EE earn its higher total price?

A premium EE tariff makes sense if it replaces other spending or fixes a real limitation. Price each benefit separately. The EE logo does not make the service better on its own.

What you useWhen EE might be worth moreWhen it may not be
Premium 5G or congestion benefitsYour compatible device regularly works in supported busy places and the exact EE plan includes themYou mostly use Wi-Fi, have no 5G+ coverage or are buying a tier without the feature
Included subscriptionsThe bundle replaces a service you would otherwise pay for at the same levelYou would not subscribe, already get it elsewhere or the package is not the one you need
Family and smartwatch featuresEligible data gifting, wearable service or multi-line discounts cut your household's total bill1pMobile also has selected multi-SIM offers; a regular family of phone users may save more there
Stay Connected DataWith a qualifying EE plan, essentials such as messages or maps may still work at reduced speed after your regular data runs outVideo streaming needs more speed, and this feature may cost extra where it is not included
More roamingThe destination and qualifying roaming data matter on your actual tripsYou rarely travel, or 1pMobile's included allowance is enough
Shops and supportYou value an EE store or a particular support arrangementYou are happy with remote account and customer support

The subscription-value test: work out the extra you would pay for the EE tariff over the same service dates, then subtract only the cost of benefits you would really have bought separately. A streaming inclusion you would not use is worth £0 to you. If you already have a discounted subscription, use your actual avoided cost, not the headline list price.

A family-plan check matters. 1pMobile advertises discounted additional SIMs through a particular Unlimited family arrangement; do not assume the same discount applies to every smaller Boost. The linked-SIM renewal and billing arrangement can change when you add or remove a family member. EE may instead offer account discounts, data gifting or connected-device services. Compare total family cost and useful allowances, not discount percentages alone. Start with 1pMobile plans we track for ordinary deals; for the separate family product, explore 1pMobile's bundles and family options through our confirmed partner link. Check the family checkout terms before buying.

An existing EE customer may qualify for a multi-line or broadband-linked offer that changes the sums. A premium EE plan can also carry a longer commitment and a different schedule of price rises. Read the product and account eligibility before you decide either provider wins. Stay Connected Data is reduced-speed fallback access, not another full-speed allowance. EE's explanation describes a very limited connection for basics rather than video streaming; on some plans it is included, while others may require a paid add-on. Check both eligibility and cost for the exact offer.

EE contract vs 1pMobile Boost: how to compare the real bill

The biggest money trap is comparing a calendar-month EE bill with a 30-day 1pMobile Boost as if they covered the same dates. They do not. EE also sells other payment models, including some shorter-term and pay-as-you-go options, so the right comparison depends on the exact offers.

  1. Choose a realistic period. For example, until a house move, a new handset or your next likely contract change.
  2. Match the data. Pick an allowance that covers your busiest normal month on both products. A 5GB SIM and a 50GB SIM are not direct substitutes.
  3. Count the payments. Add up the actual EE monthly payments, including any scheduled rises, and the number of 1pMobile 30-day Boost periods needed for continuous cover over the same dates.
  4. Add the extras. Include compulsory fees, out-of-bundle charges, roaming add-ons and early-exit payments where they apply. Value optional extras separately, not as invented cash savings.

A fictional worked example: twelve calendar months versus 30-day Boosts

These plans and prices are made up. They are not EE or 1pMobile offers. Assume both give equal UK data and services, there are no extra fees and the customer needs 365 days of unbroken coverage.

Illustrative planPayment patternCost to cover 365 days
Plan A£12 per calendar month, twelve monthly bills£144
Plan B£10 per 30-day period, 13 consecutive periods needed£130

Plan B costs £14 less for that period, and its last paid bundle runs beyond day 365. Counting only twelve 30-day payments would look cheaper but covers 360 days, five short. Covering 365 days normally takes a thirteenth consecutive 30-day period, though another billing or annual-prepay design may work differently.

Now imagine Plan A includes a feature you would otherwise buy for £30 over the same period. The value to you improves, but your cash payments do not become £114. Keep money paid to the network separate from value received. For the same reason, judge a 24-month EE promotion against its full minimum term, not just a cheaper first bill.

EE publishes scheduled pounds-and-pence changes for relevant contracts. The amount and dates depend on the agreement and when you took it out. See EE's price-change explanation. 1pMobile Boosts avoid a conventional long minimum term, but prices and conditions can still change with notice, so do not assume today's price is locked in for two years. Our guide to the cheapest suitable EE-network SIM covers a wider range of EE-based providers. This page is only about EE versus 1pMobile.

What are you actually buying from 1pMobile?

Hearing "1pMobile" you might picture a SIM that costs 1p a minute. That is only one product. Classic PAYG, a 30-day Boost and an annual prepaid bundle do not work the same way.

30-day Boosts: for regular phone and data use

A Boost is the closest match to an ordinary EE SIM-only plan. It gives a set allowance of data and included UK calls and texts for its period. Compare the right data size, renewal settings, roaming and out-of-bundle charges, and remember that 30 days is not automatically a calendar month. Out-of-bundle use can draw from PAYG credit and trigger automatic top-up where that is enabled, so check your account controls if you want to prevent unexpected spending. If you do not need EE's premium benefits, compare the 1pMobile deals in our live catalogue and use a qualifying card's Full plan details and View Deal.

Classic PAYG: the 1p rate is not the whole cost

The traditional product charges account credit for standard UK calls, texts and mobile data. Under 1pMobile's terms updated in July 2026, customers joining from 1 August 2026 face a £10 minimum qualifying spend or use in each 90-day commitment period. Customers who joined earlier can have different historical periods. This matters for a backup SIM that sees almost no activity.

Do not count it twice. Qualifying usage and Boost spending count towards the minimum, so the £10 is not necessarily an extra fee on top of £10 you have already used. Loading £10 of credit is not the same as spending it. For customers using only classic PAYG, the terms also provide for deductions when use is too low, possible automatic top-ups from saved payment details and possible suspension if payment cannot be collected. A Boost that stops can leave you on standard PAYG rules, so check your account instead of assuming the SIM simply goes quiet.

If this is why you are looking, view the classic 1pMobile PAYG product and read our PAYG vs SIM-only guide before treating the per-minute headline as your annual bill.

Annual prepaid: not a rolling Boost or an EE contract

1pMobile also has separate annual prepaid products whose allowances refresh on the product's own schedule. The upfront cost, allowance reset, expiry and refund terms decide whether one suits a long-term user. An annual prepaid package does not become a normal twelve-bill contract just because you use it for a year. For a light-data scenario, you can check 1pMobile's annual prepaid 5GB product. It is not one of the rolling comparison cards above, so compare the upfront payment and actual service dates separately.

Which is better for EU roaming, eSIM and everyday calling?

EU roaming: included benefits differ

1pMobile includes roaming in eligible European destinations on Boosts, with a separate fair-use data ceiling. A smaller UK bundle cannot give more roaming data than the UK allowance it contains. Under the operator's policy as we reviewed it, larger Boosts had a 14GB roaming ceiling. Check the currently published cap and your destination before you buy or travel. Extra or prolonged roaming may bring charges or restrictions.

EE's European roaming varies more by tier. Some SIMs need a daily charge or an add-on, while qualifying premium products include roaming, with potentially larger allowances and, on some tiers, more international zones. The question is not just "EU roaming: yes or no". A week of maps and messaging may suit 1pMobile, while a long trip with heavy data may favour an eligible EE product. Compare the destinations, the remaining UK allowance, the fair-use limit and the charge after it runs out. Our EU roaming SIM comparison helps if travel is the deciding factor.

Roaming while abroad is not the same as calling a foreign number from the UK. UK calls and texts in a bundle do not mean free international dialling anywhere. Check both operators' out-of-bundle rates before you make those calls.

eSIM, Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling

Both brands support eSIM, Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling (VoLTE) in the right circumstances, but devices, account set-ups and connected products are not interchangeable. A phone's general eSIM capability does not prove the network will activate it as a new or replacement eSIM, and replacement eSIMs may carry a fee. Wi-Fi Calling working on EE does not automatically mean identical behaviour after you port to 1pMobile.

If your signal at home is poor, check your exact handset and software with your chosen provider before assuming Wi-Fi Calling will fix it. If you want a cellular Apple Watch or another standalone wearable, do not assume phone eSIM support covers it. Check that service and its eligible plan. Our UK eSIM network guide and Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE guide explain these checks.

Who should stay with EE, and who should switch to 1pMobile?

You mainly use ordinary UK data, calls and texts. Compare a suitable 1pMobile Boost with the EE price over your intended period. If both support your device and you will not miss a premium benefit, paying extra for the EE brand may be unnecessary. Start with the live 1pMobile tariff comparison.

You often work in crowded places. First confirm that the EE product you can actually buy has the priority or 5G+ capability you want. Neither an ordinary EE plan nor a generic 1pMobile 5G label proves priority. If you cannot get the eligible feature on a SIM-only plan, do not pay for a benefit you will not receive.

You want unlimited data. Compare unlimited against unlimited, including fair-use and network-management rules, scheduled EE rises, 30-day billing and the value of EE extras. A selected EE promotion can win on total cost. 1pMobile is not guaranteed to be the cheapest unlimited option just because its smaller bundles are competitive.

You go abroad. Work out the countries, the trip length and the data you expect to use. A 1pMobile Boost's included roaming may be enough. On qualifying EE plans, a larger eligible allowance or extra countries may justify the premium. Never buy on an EU-roaming badge alone.

You want a second number or a light-use backup. Do not pick classic PAYG for its 1p headline. Work out the minimum-spend commitment and any automatic top-up behaviour. An annual prepaid bundle or another provider's low-usage product could suit you better.

You are already with EE. Check your contract end date and any early-exit or handset-finance balance before you buy a replacement SIM. If your EE price includes a household discount or subscriptions you use, count those benefits fairly. If neither provider fits, you can compare all tracked EE-network providers.

How to move from EE to 1pMobile and keep your number

Moving between two brands on EE's network is still a provider switch. To keep your UK number, text PAC to 65075 from your current SIM, then give the code to the new provider. To check switching or contract information, text INFO to 85075. Do not cancel your current number yourself before the transfer is arranged. If you want a new number instead of keeping your old one, the STAC process is different.

Check any remaining EE minimum-term or device payments. Changing providers does not make valid exit charges disappear. You may get a temporary number on the new SIM until your original number transfers. Our number switching guide covers the steps and common mistakes.

EE vs 1pMobile: frequently asked questions

Is 1pMobile the same network as EE?

It uses EE's underlying UK mobile network, so its ordinary radio coverage is broadly based on EE infrastructure. 1pMobile is a different retailer, though, so plan features, support and access to advanced technologies are not necessarily the same.

Will 1pMobile be slower than EE?

Not necessarily. 1pMobile advertises no general speed cap on its 30-day Boosts, while some EE tariffs have explicit limits. Neither fact guarantees a real-world speed. Check the exact plan, local signal, device and any premium network eligibility.

Is EE ever cheaper than 1pMobile?

Yes, for a specific offer, household discount, data requirement or full minimum term. A 24-month EE deal and repeated 30-day Boosts must be calculated over the same dates, with scheduled price changes and useful extras included fairly. Use the current cards, not an old permanent-winner claim.

Does 1pMobile have a contract?

Its 30-day Boosts avoid a conventional long minimum term, but prices and conditions can still change with notice. Classic PAYG and annual prepaid are separate products with their own rules, including a £10 minimum qualifying spend or use in each 90-day period for classic PAYG customers who joined from 1 August 2026.

Does 1pMobile offer 5G+ and Fast Lane like EE?

It advertises 5G, which does not confirm the same advanced EE 5G+ or premium priority products. EE itself limits features such as Network Boost and Fast Lane to qualifying plans, devices and coverage, and a standard EE SIM-only plan is not guaranteed to include Fast Lane.

Does 1pMobile include European roaming?

Eligible Boosts include roaming in specified European destinations, with plan-specific fair-use rules and a roaming data cap. EE's arrangement varies by plan: some include roaming and others charge or need an add-on. Check the destination, data cap and exact contract before you travel.

Can I keep my EE mobile number when moving to 1pMobile?

Normally yes. Text PAC to 65075 from the old SIM and give the code to 1pMobile. Arrange the transfer before you cancel anything, and allow for any minimum-term or handset-finance charges.

Bottom line: if you like EE coverage but mainly buy ordinary UK calls and data, 1pMobile deserves a serious like-for-like price comparison. EE earns its premium only where the exact contract offers benefits you need and would otherwise pay for. Use the live EE and 1pMobile offers above for the current price decision, and check eligibility before you order.
