Best SIMs for EU roaming in the UK

The right roaming SIM depends on the trip. A city break, a fortnight in Spain and regular travel to India can need very different allowances, destination coverage and pass costs.

Travel case, passport, map and eSIM phone prepared for a European trip

The best roaming SIM is not necessarily the one with the biggest UK data allowance. For a short trip, five free days can be more useful than a huge domestic bundle. For heavier use abroad, the roaming data cap and what happens after it matter much more.

Roaming policies are volatile. Check the visible date on every offer and confirm terms for the exact country before travelling.

Start with the trip, not the tariff

2–5 day city break

Maps, messaging, transport apps, browsing and occasional photo uploads can often fit inside 3–5GB when accommodation Wi-Fi handles heavier video. That makes lighter caps practical for many short trips, and Honest Mobile Classic SIM’s five free EU+ days can be relevant for repeated breaks.

One-week holiday

A week gives roaming policy more room to affect the experience. Regular maps, photos, social media and occasional streaming can make 5GB restrictive. SMARTY’s 12GB fair-use allowance offers more headroom, while iD’s normal published 30GB cap offers more again. Tesco Mobile takes a different approach: eligible customers use UK allowances across its Home From Home zone, subject to fair-use and periodic-travel terms.

Two weeks or more

Check the actual roaming data limit, what happens after it and any permanent-roaming restrictions. A 100GB UK plan does not necessarily mean 100GB abroad. On a longer trip, the difference between 5GB, 12GB, 20GB and 30GB can matter more than a small difference in monthly SIM price.

The strongest included-roaming options

Tesco Mobile: simple use-your-plan roaming

Tesco Mobile’s Home From Home covers 48 destinations across the EU and beyond. It says customers can use UK data, minutes and texts at no extra roaming fee in the included zone, subject to fair use. The list includes destinations such as Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Monaco, Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Canary Islands and Gibraltar.

Tesco currently says Home From Home is continuing and it has no plans to introduce EU roaming fees anytime soon. The policy is designed for periodic travel, so read the current terms before a long stay abroad.

iD Mobile: a large included data allowance

iD Mobile’s Inclusive Roaming covers 50 destinations. Under its normal published fair-use policy, customers joining or upgrading from 21 June 2023 can use up to 30GB a month while roaming. iD also has a temporary full-UK-allowance promotion running until further notice; customers should not rely on it as a permanent entitlement.

Lebara: Europe and India

Lebara says customers can use UK plan allowances in the EU or India at no extra cost, with data capped at up to 30GB. That can be useful for travellers who need both European and Indian roaming, as well as international-calling features. Use Lebara’s destination finder before travel.

SMARTY: a 12GB middle ground

SMARTY allows up to 12GB per plan month from the normal allowance while roaming in its EU zone. Calls and texts are included under the normal EU terms. Eligible larger plans can use add-ons and one- or three-day EU roaming passes to unlock more data for the pass period.

Good options for lighter roaming

giffgaff

Eligible giffgaff customers can use up to 5GB of plan data in the EU and selected destinations, with included calls and texts. Current terms say 10p/MB can apply after the cap, while starting a new plan early or a travel add-on may be an alternative.

Talkmobile

Talkmobile includes roaming in 47 European destinations. Customers who joined or upgraded from 14 March 2023 have a 5GB data fair-use limit per billing month. Older customers can have a different legacy allowance, which should not be used as the default for a new buyer.

Honest Mobile Classic SIM

Honest Mobile Classic SIM includes the first five EU+ roaming days free on each trip, then currently charges £2 per day. Its Unlimited plan is capped at 20GB roaming data a calendar month. Honest Smart SIM is a separate multi-network data product and should not be confused with Classic SIM.

Providers where Europe costs extra

VOXI

VOXI generally requires a European Roaming Pass in most European destinations. The current passes include normal plan data or 20GB, whichever is lower, plus unlimited calls and texts. Ireland, Isle of Man, Iceland and Norway currently have different treatment under the stated terms.

Sky Mobile

Sky Mobile’s Roaming Passport Plus currently costs £2 per 24 hours and covers 120 destinations. UK allowances can be used subject to a 25GB roaming-data fair-use limit per billing cycle. It can still suit existing Sky customers who value broad global coverage from one SIM.

How much roaming data do you need?

1–3GB: light trip

Often enough for messaging, maps, email, transport apps, search and occasional photo sharing — especially with accommodation Wi-Fi.

5GB: normal short holiday

Can cover regular maps, messaging, social feeds, web browsing, music and some short-form video.

10–12GB: comfortable week away

Offers more room for social video, photo uploads, moderate streaming and occasional tethering.

20–30GB: heavy user or longer trip

More suitable for frequent streaming, hotspot use, large photo/video uploads, longer travel or poor access to Wi-Fi.

Five roaming traps that cause surprise bills

  1. Switzerland is not in the EU. A provider’s actual destination list matters more than the word “Europe”.
  2. Border roaming can connect you to the wrong country. Check the network name and consider manual selection near borders.
  3. Ferries and planes can use satellite or maritime networks. Turn mobile data off unless you know exactly what network is in use.
  4. Use your UK allowance can still have a roaming cap. Check the fair-use limit, not only the UK headline allowance.
  5. International calling is not roaming. Calling France from the UK can have different charges from using a UK SIM while in France.

Fast final chooser

Start with Tesco Mobile for a simple broad-zone use-your-plan approach; iD for heavier included roaming data; Lebara for Europe plus India; SMARTY for a rolling-plan middle ground; giffgaff or Talkmobile for lighter use; and Honest Mobile for frequent trips of five days or less. VOXI and Sky can still make sense when their UK proposition suits you and you are comfortable with a paid roaming pass.
