Lebara vs Asda Mobile: Which SIM-Only Deal Is Better?
Short answer: Choose Lebara first if you often call people abroad, want EU and India roaming included, or want to avoid a long commitment. Look closely at Asda Mobile if you want a 12 or 24-month SIM with next-month data rollover and you'll really use the Asda Rewards Cashpot. Both are Vodafone-linked, and Asda also advertises Vodafone-and-Three benefits, but that doesn't mean identical signal or speed on every phone and plan. Which is cheaper depends on the data you need and how long you'll stay.

Lebara vs Asda Mobile at a glance
| What matters | Lebara | Asda Mobile |
|---|---|---|
| UK network | Vodafone-hosted; 5G where eligible | Vodafone-hosted, with advertised Vodafone and Three benefits |
| Plan types | 30-day recurring bundles; separate 12-month contracts | One-calendar-month PAYG bundles; 12- and 24-month Pay Monthly contracts |
| International calls from the UK | Included minutes to eligible destinations on qualifying plans | Destination-dependent charges; no bundled international allowance to assume |
| European roaming | Roam Like Home on eligible destinations; data capped at UK allowance or 30GB | Eligible European destinations; data capped at UK allowance or 5GB |
| India roaming | Included in eligible Roam Like Home scheme | Not part of the same included Europe allowance; check India rates and add-ons |
| Data rollover | No Asda-style contract rollover to assume | Unused eligible Pay Monthly data usable the following month |
| Grocery rewards | No Cashpot equivalent | Asda Rewards value on qualifying 12 or 24-month contracts, subject to membership and timely payment |
| Price rises | Advertises no annual increases on its eligible current SIM-only range | Advertises no mid-contract rises on current 12 and 24-month SIM-only plans |
| eSIM | Available, but new-customer activation has device limits | Pay Monthly terms describe eSIM; confirm for the offer and handset |
| Strongest reason to pick | Calling abroad and included roaming without a two-year commitment | Long-term value if you use rollover and Rewards |
Neither is universally better. If your phone works well on both, total cost for the right allowance, the contract length and the extras you'll actually use decide it. If reception is poor where you live, start with coverage, not price. If you depend on unlimited UK calls, also compare the calling allowance: some smaller Lebara deals specify finite UK minutes, while Asda's standard data bundles advertise unlimited eligible UK minutes and texts.
Do Lebara and Asda Mobile have the same coverage and speeds?
Not necessarily. Lebara uses Vodafone's UK network. Ofcom lists Asda Mobile as Vodafone-based, and Asda's own plans advertise access benefits from Vodafone and Three as the combined infrastructure develops. Those statements don't prove that Lebara customers get the same network-sharing access as Asda customers, or that Asda always has the stronger signal.
"Same network, same coverage, same speed" misses three things: the coverage on a specific plan, which shared sites are enabled for that customer, and congestion or performance policies. The Vodafone–Three integration is still in progress, and its benefits can vary by location, device and network arrangement.
Use the Ofcom mobile coverage checker for the places that matter: home, workplace, commute and the building where you spend most of your time. Start with Vodafone as the underlying network for Lebara, then check Asda's own Vodafone-and-Three coverage information for the exact offer. Predicted outdoor coverage and national population percentages don't tell you whether an indoor call works.
Will Asda be faster because it advertises two networks?
There's no evidence of a blanket speed winner. Two-network marketing doesn't show that Asda has unrestricted access to every Three 5G mast or priority over Lebara. Sharing Vodafone infrastructure doesn't guarantee identical speeds or traffic management either. A better test is whether either SIM improves signal in the rooms and journeys where you actually use it; national population coverage is not a substitute for that.
Both sell 5G-capable SIMs, subject to coverage, a compatible phone and plan eligibility. Data allowance and data speed are separate questions: some Asda Unlimited offers have been sold in different maximum-speed tiers, so an “unlimited” label alone is not proof of unrestricted 5G speed. Check the speed stated for the exact offer. Real results depend on signal strength, handset modem, local congestion and network configuration. DealPriceCheck hasn't run controlled side-by-side speed tests, so we don't claim measured superiority for either.
If your reception is borderline, check the coverage maps, verify Wi-Fi Calling on your exact handset and, where practical, try a short-term SIM before committing to 12 or 24 months. Our MVNO coverage and speeds guide explains why a shared network owner doesn't mean identical service.
Which is cheaper: Lebara or Asda Mobile?
Neither has a permanent price lead. More gigabytes isn't better value if you won't use them, and a small monthly saving isn't worth a two-year commitment you may regret. Both ranges change offers often, so compare the current cards, not an old voucher price or a competitor's frozen table.
Three comparisons beat comparing headline prices:
- Same usage: find the smallest allowance and UK calls and texts package that covers a typical month. Don't compare 5GB with 10GB.
- Same period: for 90 days, compare short-term renewals. For two years, compare the total payments of a 24-month contract with renewing a flexible plan over that time.
- Same extras: add roaming, calls abroad, overage and any other services you'll use. Treat Asda Rewards as a separate, conditional shop benefit, not cash off the bill.
The live Lebara catalogue includes 30-day and 12-month products with tracked View Deal routes. The Asda Mobile catalogue has one-month PAYG, 12-month and 24-month options. Read each deal's data, commitment and price schedule before concluding anything.
Why can a cheaper 24-month Asda plan cost more?
The full contract liability counts. A plan that's slightly cheaper each month can still be poor value if you leave early, move abroad or find the signal doesn't work for you. Rolling plans let you rethink, but that flexibility costs you if you keep paying a higher price for years.
Hypothetical example, not real Lebara or Asda prices: suppose both plans include enough data and you need uninterrupted service for 24 calendar months. Depending on the dates, that is typically 730 or 731 days, so you would need 25 consecutive 30-day bundles to cover the full period rather than just 24. The last bundle would extend slightly beyond the end of the comparison.
| Payment model over the same 24 calendar months | Cycles or payments needed | Illustrative total before extras |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible 30-day bundle at £8 per renewal | 25 × 30-day bundles, covering 750 days | £200 |
| 24-calendar-month contract at £7 per month | 24 monthly payments | £168 |
| Difference under these assumptions | £32 |
That £32 difference is the illustrative cost of choosing the flexible option over the stated period, rather than proof that a real Asda or Lebara plan is cheaper. The last 30-day renewal also covers days after the comparison end date. If you cancel after several months, you could save much more by avoiding the remaining minimum-term liability; if you stay throughout, Asda's rollover and Rewards could also add value. Renewal prices, minimum-term charges and promotions must be accounted for on the actual offers.
Why the arithmetic matters: 24 × 30 days is only 720 days, not two calendar years. Twelve 30-day cycles cover 360 days, not 365. Comparing the same number of bills when billing periods differ can make one option look falsely cheaper. Asda's current PAYG materials describe a calendar-month bundle; Lebara's flexible product is a 30-day bundle.
Is Lebara's 12-month SIM better than Asda's longer contracts?
It depends on the agreement. Lebara's 12-month range suits someone who wants a longer-term price without a 24-month commitment. An Asda 12 or 24-month contract appeals if you'll use the next-month rollover and Rewards. Leaving either plan during its minimum term can trigger early-termination charges unless a cancellation right or other contractual exception applies. Lebara's 12-month plan is not the same as its flexible 30-day bundles. Asda's marketing about flexible plan changes must not be read as permission to downgrade freely during a 12- or 24-month minimum term; check the contract's tariff-change and early-exit rules first.
View the Lebara 12-month 5GB offer and 12-month 30GB offer, then compare similar Asda allowances on the Asda provider page. Both Lebara links lead to existing deal pages with verified Awin-backed buttons. Check each offer's international minutes and eSIM compatibility.
30-day Lebara vs one-month Asda PAYG: which is more flexible?
Both suit people who don't want a long commitment, but they aren't the same product. Renewal dates, included calls, out-of-bundle rates and leftover credit can differ. In particular, Asda's own PAYG page says bundles last one calendar month, while some DealPriceCheck Asda catalogue cards label them "30-day rolling". The official product's actual expiry and renewal date should take precedence at checkout; the catalogue-label discrepancy is a separate technical correction, not something to hide by calling the two periods equivalent.
| Check before buying | Lebara 30-day bundle | Asda one-month PAYG |
|---|---|---|
| Long minimum term | None of the normal 12-month kind | No 12/24-month minimum on a one-month bundle |
| Renewal | Check auto-renew settings and sufficient credit/payment | A one-calendar-month bundle; recurring purchase can be enabled |
| After data runs out | Check balance use, add-ons and ordinary out-of-bundle rates | Check data add-ons and the standard PAYG rate |
| Included calls | Plan-specific; some small bundles have finite UK minutes | Current standard data bundles advertise unlimited UK minutes and texts |
| International calls | May include eligible destinations and minutes | Check destination rate or add-on |
| Rollover and rewards | No Cashpot | Don't assume Pay Monthly rollover or Rewards apply to PAYG |
Lebara is attractive if included calls abroad replace paid international minutes. Asda can be simpler if you just want domestic calls and texts on a flexible bundle. Choose on the exact offer, not the brand.
For small or mid-size allowances, start with the Lebara 5GB 30-day card, the Lebara 15GB 30-day card and Asda's one-month selection. Confirm each card's UK calling allowance and renewal rules before paying.
Is Asda's data rollover better than Lebara's flexibility?
Asda's rollover is a real benefit on eligible Pay Monthly contracts: unused included data can move into the following month. You can't accumulate it indefinitely, and Asda's one-month PAYG bundles shouldn't be assumed eligible.
Hypothetical example: on a 20GB contract allowance you use 12GB in month one. If the 8GB left over is eligible, it can cushion a busy month two. It doesn't automatically roll again into month three. Asda's published Pay Monthly terms say rolled data is used before the new monthly allowance and that moving tariffs can mean losing the unused allowance from the former tariff. Rollover is a short-term buffer, not a savings account, and an unlimited-data plan cannot accumulate an unlimited quantity of unused GB.
That helps if your usage swings: a quiet month then a holiday, a commute change or more hotspot use. It helps little if you routinely buy far too much. If you use 4GB a month, a smaller plan can beat paying for 30GB just to roll most of it forward.
Lebara's strengths are shorter-term bundles, eligible overseas calling and roaming. Don't assume it has identical rollover unless the offer says so. For networks that let you keep unused data, see our UK data rollover SIM guide.
Are Asda Rewards worth choosing Asda over Lebara?
Only if you shop at Asda regularly and qualify. The Asda Pay Monthly terms we reviewed say eligible Rewards members who pay their mobile bill in full and on time earn Cashpot value of 2% of the monthly bill on a 12-month SIM and 5% on a 24-month SIM. That's a scheme benefit, not an automatic reduction in the contracted payment.
Hypothetical example: a £20 monthly bill on a qualifying 24-month contract earns £1 of Asda Pounds Cashpot at 5%. Over 24 eligible payments that's £24 in Cashpot value, not £24 paid to your bank or taken off your mobile bill. Membership, redemption and validity rules apply, so confirm the percentage and eligibility at checkout. Cashpot value is only worth its face value if you'll actually use it under the scheme's redemption rules; the SIM's contracted bill remains due in full.
Don't buy more data than you need because of a rewards percentage. If an Asda plan costs £3 more a month than a suitable Lebara plan, £1 of monthly Cashpot doesn't close the gap. It can still be worth it if other Asda benefits matter to you, but weigh those separately.
Some Asda promotional rewards apply to one product only. Don't assume they cover every SIM, one-month PAYG or the whole life of a 24-month contract. And Lebara doesn't need a Cashpot to be the better buy for someone who calls abroad or needs more roaming data.
Lebara vs Asda EU roaming: which is better for travel?
Lebara is the stronger starting point if you need more included data abroad. Its Roam Like Home scheme covers eligible European destinations and India, with data capped at the smaller of your UK allowance and 30GB. Asda includes European roaming on eligible plans but caps standard included data at the smaller of your UK allowance and 5GB. Check country lists, long-stay conditions and what happens after the allowance separately.
| UK data allowance | Lebara: possible included roaming data | Asda: possible included roaming data |
|---|---|---|
| 3GB | Up to 3GB | Up to 3GB |
| 5GB | Up to 5GB | Up to 5GB |
| 15GB | Up to 15GB | Up to 5GB |
| 50GB | Up to 30GB | Up to 5GB |
| Unlimited UK data | Up to 30GB | Up to 5GB |
These are ceilings derived from the published caps, not proof that each example tariff exists or that every country is included. A 5GB UK plan doesn't become 30GB abroad because Lebara's top cap is 30GB.
Before you leave the UK: Lebara says a new SIM must be activated in the UK before travelling, or roaming may not work. Asda says roaming must be switched on both in your online account (under its current My Profile features) and in your phone settings. A working UK SIM and a country on the list do not, on their own, guarantee that roaming has been enabled.
What if you use more than 5GB in Europe on Asda?
Asda's published roaming page currently quotes 10p per MB after the included EU allowance and offers additional data bundles. At that published rate, another 500MB would cost £50 (500 × £0.10), before any separately purchased add-on. This is a calculation using the reviewed policy, not a prediction of your eventual bill; a later rate change, account control or add-on may change it. Check the current rate and buy a suitable add-on before you exceed the limit. Asda says it sends notifications at 80% and 100%, but these alerts are not a substitute for a spending control.
Lebara's higher cap isn't unlimited either. On a large or unlimited UK plan, data beyond the roaming ceiling may need a paid add-on or face another charge or restriction. Both operators apply fair use, and Lebara also publishes a rolling 120-day usage pattern check for Roam Like Home. For a stay of months rather than a holiday, don't assume either tourist allowance works indefinitely.
What about India?
This is a real difference. Lebara includes India in its eligible Roam Like Home scheme, subject to your plan allowance, the 30GB ceiling and fair use. Asda's European roaming list doesn't promise India. If visiting family in India is part of your year, compare Lebara's plan with Asda's actual India roaming charges or add-ons, not just UK prices.
Calling India from the UK is a different service from using your SIM while in India. A Lebara bundle may include qualifying minutes from the UK, but that doesn't automatically cover premium numbers or data abroad. Our EU roaming SIM guide covers other options if neither suits.
Which is better for international calls from the UK?
Lebara deserves the first look for regular international calling. Qualifying Lebara bundles include minutes to selected overseas destinations. The number of minutes and countries depends on the plan, and landline and mobile eligibility can differ. Some low-data Lebara plans also have finite UK minutes, so check both UK and international allowances instead of assuming unlimited.
Asda offers international calling, but its destination rates are a separate cost. Unlimited UK minutes and texts don't mean unlimited international calls. Someone phoning family overseas every week may save more with an eligible Lebara allowance than with a slightly cheaper domestic-only SIM.
When might Asda still make sense for calls abroad?
If you make one short call abroad every few months, a pay-as-you-go destination rate or add-on can cost less than buying a plan just for its international minutes. Your country, number type and monthly minutes decide it.
Hypothetical example: you need 100 minutes a month to one overseas mobile. If a suitable Lebara tariff includes them and an otherwise suitable Asda tariff charged 15p a minute, the separate call bill would be £15 a month. That is not a claim about Asda's real rate for your destination. Check Asda's country-and-number rate and Lebara's inclusion list.
Use our international-calling SIM guide, then the verified Lebara offer cards that match the data and minutes you need.
Do 5G, Wi-Fi Calling, eSIM and hotspot support change the choice?
An eSIM or 5G badge isn't enough. What matters is whether the specific offer works on your phone and supports the features you need at home and abroad.
Is eSIM easier on Lebara or Asda?
Lebara offers eSIM, but its current self-service guidance limits new-customer eSIM sign-up to the Apple iPhone Air, with separate arrangements for existing customers. For a new customer with another phone, a physical Lebara SIM may be the safer route. Device eligibility is changing, so confirm the onboarding option before assuming support. Travel soon after activating eSIM? Lebara's eSIM help currently warns that included Roam Like Home data may be temporarily blocked in the EU or India for the first seven days after activation. An extra roaming add-on may be needed during that period. This is a material reason to check your activation date before relying on a newly activated eSIM abroad.
Asda's Pay Monthly terms describe an eSIM order and QR-code activation, but that doesn't prove every Asda plan card is available as eSIM now, or that every eSIM-capable phone works. The Asda cards we checked don't confirm eSIM per product. If a digital SIM is essential, ask Asda about the selected plan and handset before buying.
What if you rely on Wi-Fi Calling indoors?
Support for Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling depends on handset compatibility, settings and provisioning. If indoor reception is poor, check your exact handset model and firmware on each operator's help pages. Sharing Vodafone infrastructure doesn't mean features transfer automatically. See which UK networks support Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE.
Can I tether a laptop or use a hotspot?
Normal tethering is possible within plan and fair-use conditions. Video calls, system updates and cloud backups on a laptop use far more data than phone browsing. If you hotspot often, compare ordinary UK data and fair-use limits. Roaming caps still apply abroad, and a big home allowance isn't a big European hotspot allowance.
Do either provider's spending controls prevent unexpected bills?
No flexible tariff or monthly subscription guarantees that extra charges can't happen. Premium calls, international numbers, overage data, add-ons and out-of-plan roaming can be charged on top of the base payment. Whether a spend limit catches them depends on the provider and the type of charge.
For Lebara, check what happens when an included allowance runs out, whether you hold a PAYG balance and whether auto top-up or auto-renew is on. On an Asda PAYG bundle, look at the standard data and international rates. On Pay Monthly, check out-of-plan limits and how a spending cap works when you travel.
A "£0 cap" doesn't mean a £0 bill if the contract charge, purchased extras or excluded fees are still payable. If spend controls are decisive, see our guide to SIM-only spending caps and check the exclusions in the contract summary.
Which should you choose? Seven buying situations
| If this sounds like you | Start with | Check before deciding |
|---|---|---|
| You call family abroad most weeks | Lebara | Destination, mobile or landline eligibility, included minutes |
| You travel in Europe often and use more than 5GB | Lebara | Destination, your UK allowance, the 30GB ceiling, long-stay rules |
| You travel to India | Lebara | Current India inclusion and your exact tariff |
| You shop at Asda regularly and can stay 12–24 months | Asda Pay Monthly | Cashpot eligibility, plan price, early-exit cost |
| Your data use spikes one month then drops | Asda contract with rollover, or a suitable smaller plan | Only one next-month rollover; don't buy more data than you need |
| You need a flexible UK SIM for a short or uncertain period | Lebara 30-day vs Asda one-month PAYG | Renewal cycle, included UK calls, out-of-bundle pricing |
| Signal is unreliable where you live | Check local network access first | Vodafone-based prediction, Asda's eligible sharing, handset, indoor use |
None of this assumes Lebara is always cheaper or Asda always has better network performance. If the difference is small and both work locally, pick the plan with fewer restrictions you're likely to hit.
How do you compare the actual Lebara and Asda plans?
Once you know your normal data use and how long you'll stay, use the current DealPriceCheck cards, not a permanent price table.
| Situation | Lebara deal | Why look at it |
|---|---|---|
| Modest data, flexible term | Lebara 5GB, 30-day | Check UK and international minutes |
| More everyday data, no year-long minimum | Lebara 15GB, 30-day | Compare with Asda one-month bundle and the EU limit |
| Moderate to heavy use on a rolling SIM | Lebara 30GB, 30-day | Compare ordinary UK data and travel needs |
| Low-data longer-term comparison | Lebara 5GB, 12-month | Check the full 12-month commitment |
| Medium-data longer-term comparison | Lebara 30GB, 12-month | Compare with Asda Pay Monthly rollover and Rewards |
These five internal Lebara pages have existing Awin-backed View Deal buttons. Each is a starting point for an actual purchase, not a promise that the currently displayed price includes a particular international-minute allocation, eSIM route or roaming eligibility. If 5GB is enough and you want flexibility, start with the 30-day 5GB card; if you know you'll stay at least a year, compare its 12-month counterpart over the complete term. See all Lebara plans for other allowances.
Compare the same allowance and term with Asda Mobile's listed plans. We include Asda because it may suit some buyers better. The internal Asda catalogue currently has provider-direct View Deal buttons and no confirmed Awin attribution, so this guide adds no separate Asda checkout link. That is a commercial limitation for DealPriceCheck, not evidence that an otherwise better Asda plan should be excluded.
Before you buy, check your handset, postcode, UK calling allowance, start and renewal price, overseas allowance, rollover and Rewards eligibility, and any cancellation cost. The provider's final contract summary matters more than the logo.
Can you keep your number when moving between Lebara and Asda?
Usually yes. Under Ofcom's Text to Switch process, text PAC to 65075 from the number you want to keep and give the code to the new provider. Eligible switches normally complete within one working day, and a PAC is normally valid for 30 days.
To switch without keeping the number, text STAC to 75075. To check your switching and contract position, text INFO to 85075. Early-termination charges and outstanding handset finance don't disappear because you use a PAC, and multi-line accounts may need a different request method. See Ofcom's switching advice and our guide to keeping your number.
Lebara vs Asda Mobile: FAQs
Is Lebara or Asda Mobile better?
Lebara often suits people who want eligible international calls and more included EU and India roaming data. Asda may suit people who use contract data rollover and Asda Rewards, or want its mix of one-month and longer plans. Coverage, full cost and the exact tariff decide it.
Do Lebara and Asda Mobile use the same network?
Both have Vodafone network links. Lebara is Vodafone-hosted. Asda is listed by Ofcom as Vodafone-based and advertises benefits from Vodafone and Three. That doesn't guarantee equal speed or the same shared-network access on every SIM.
Which is cheaper, Lebara or Asda Mobile SIM-only?
There's no universal winner. Match data allowances and UK calling needs, compare the full payment period, and count international calls, roaming, Rewards and early-exit risk. Prices and promotions change.
Is Asda Mobile's European roaming free?
Eligible Asda monthly plans include European roaming in qualifying destinations, with standard included data capped at the smaller of your UK allowance and 5GB. Extra data may be chargeable. Check the country list, current rates and add-ons.
Does Lebara include India roaming?
Yes, India is part of Lebara's eligible Roam Like Home scheme, subject to your tariff, the smaller of your UK allowance and 30GB, and fair use. Calling India from the UK is a separate benefit.
Does Asda Mobile roll over unused data?
Eligible Pay Monthly contract data can roll into the following month. It isn't unlimited accumulation, and Asda's one-month PAYG bundles shouldn't be assumed to share it.
Do Asda Rewards make Asda Mobile cheaper?
They may add value for eligible 12 or 24-month Pay Monthly customers who are Rewards members and pay bills as required. Cashpot value isn't a direct reduction of the SIM bill, and redemption terms may apply.
Does Lebara offer a 12-month contract as well as 30-day SIMs?
Yes. Lebara has a separate 12-month range alongside flexible 30-day bundles. A 12-month contract has a minimum commitment, and a 30-day rolling bundle is a different product.
Can I get eSIM with Lebara or Asda Mobile?
Both publish material on eSIM, but product and device eligibility differ. Lebara's new-customer self-service eSIM currently names the iPhone Air; Asda's Pay Monthly terms describe eSIM without confirming availability on every listed product. If you're travelling shortly after activating a Lebara eSIM, check the first-seven-days roaming-data restriction as well.
Is Asda faster than Lebara because it uses Vodafone and Three?
Not necessarily. Asda advertises benefits from both networks, but that doesn't prove a consistent speed advantage or identical access at every site. Compare local reception, handset and plan eligibility.
Is Asda one-month PAYG the same as Lebara 30-day SIM-only?
Both are flexible but not identical. Asda's bundle lasts a calendar month, while Lebara advertises 30-day bundles. Check renewal dates, international rates, out-of-bundle charges and included benefits.
Can I switch from Asda Mobile to Lebara and keep my number?
Normally yes. Text PAC to 65075 from your old number and give the code to Lebara. Check any remaining Asda contract liability first, because the PAC doesn't erase legitimate exit charges.
Verdict: Lebara or Asda Mobile?
If you value international calls and travel flexibility, start with the verified Lebara SIM-only deals. If next-month rollover and Asda Rewards matter and you're comfortable with the commitment, compare Asda's one-month and Pay Monthly options on the same data-and-term basis. Choose the plan that fits your real use, not the one with the loudest introductory price.
