SMARTY vs Lebara: Which SIM-Only Network Is Better?
SMARTY is a strong first choice if its Three-based coverage works well for you and you want a straightforward, flexible data plan. Lebara is worth checking first if Vodafone reception is better, you regularly call eligible international numbers, or you need more included roaming data. Neither is always cheaper. Compare your actual signal, the allowance you will use and the full cost of the same type of plan before deciding.

The most useful distinction: SMARTY and Lebara are not simply two differently priced versions of the same mobile service. The underlying network, contract, international-minute allowance and roaming rules can each change the better buy.
Which has better UK coverage: SMARTY or Lebara?
Neither has better coverage at every address. SMARTY is built around Three's UK network; Lebara uses Vodafone. Although Vodafone and Three merged to form VodafoneThree, that does not make the coverage and features of their consumer brands identical overnight.
SMARTY says its customers can automatically connect to participating Vodafone and Three sites where network sharing has been enabled. This can improve the experience in some locations, but it is a phased rollout. It does not establish that every Vodafone mast is already available to SMARTY, that SMARTY has the same 5G access at each site, or that Lebara customers receive identical sharing, speeds or prioritisation. A network-family logo is not a promise of the same service.
A UK-wide population-coverage figure is a poor way to decide between two SIMs for a particular home, workplace or rural journey. A property can have good predicted outdoor reception but disappointing calls in the kitchen or downstairs office.
Use Ofcom's Map Your Mobile checker to compare predicted indoor and outdoor 4G/5G coverage for Three and Vodafone at the postcode where you spend your time. The tool's local performance figures describe a postcode district, not a guarantee for an individual building. Then consult the two providers' coverage guidance and test a SIM where reception really matters. For broader network context, see who uses Three's network and who uses Vodafone's network.
How to test the network without risking your main number
- Check the indoor prediction at home, then your workplace and other frequently visited postcodes. Do not stop at a green outdoor coverage map.
- Check the places where a dropped call would matter most: a basement flat, work premises, regular train journey or family member's home.
- Do not assume the merger has fixed a weak signal. SMARTY's extra access depends on the sites enabled where you actually travel.
- Try a temporary-number SIM first, if possible. Make ordinary voice calls, send texts and test data at different times, including busy periods. Dual-SIM phones can make a side-by-side test easier.
- Test voice calling as well as internet speed. An older handset may support 4G data yet need specific 4G Calling (VoLTE) compatibility to make reliable calls after the UK 3G shutdown.
If only one SIM provides dependable indoor calls, that can settle the decision before a price comparison. If both work, the other features and your real spending become more important.
Which is cheaper: SMARTY or Lebara?
There is no permanent price winner. A cheap introductory rate, a larger data allowance or an attractive monthly figure says little until you know the contract length and what you will actually pay.
SMARTY's core consumer plans are normally paid in advance and roll monthly, with the option to change or stop renewal. Lebara also offers flexible 30-day SIMs, but it separately sells 12-month SIM-only contracts. These should never be compared as though both were cancellable rolling plans.
A qualifying Lebara 12-month plan can carry an early-termination charge if you leave during its minimum term. The amount depends on the applicable agreement and time left; get the current charge from Lebara before switching rather than relying on an illustrative formula. If you may leave soon, this commitment can outweigh a small monthly saving.
Compare the same period, allowance and commitment
| Your actual need | What to compare | What could change the result |
|---|---|---|
| A light phone user, mostly on Wi-Fi | Small-data 30-day plans | Lebara's entry-level UK call/text caps, not only GB or price |
| Normal browsing, music and navigation | Similar data allowance on like-for-like terms | Local coverage and any international-call savings |
| Heavy data, hotspot or streaming | High-data/unlimited options | Congestion, fair-use terms, hotspot permission and renewal cost |
| Short stay in the UK | Flexible, no-long-commitment plans | A 12-month price is not necessarily a useful bargain |
| Calling family overseas | Plan plus any required international add-on | A qualifying Lebara allowance can outweigh a lower SMARTY headline price |
| Frequent European travel | The UK allowance plus the usable roaming allowance | Whether SMARTY's 12GB is enough or Lebara's higher cap matters |
| Several household connections | Total price for all lines | An eligible SMARTY Group discount versus multiple Lebara plans |
There is a simple way to expose a misleading bargain. Write down (1) the price for each charge period, (2) any introductory discount and when it ends, (3) the minimum commitment, (4) add-ons you really need and (5) any charges for leaving early. Use the minimum contract cost shown for 12-month deals and compare it with a realistic period on a rolling plan. If two Lebara cards have the same GB allowance but different prices, do not assume the dearer one offers extra international minutes or that the cheaper one is fully equivalent: our deal details do not consistently state those extras. Check both checkout offers before paying.
Take two illustrative, not advertised, 30-day options: Plan A is £8 and Plan B is £10. If Plan A requires a £5 international-calling add-on each period to cover the calls you actually make, it costs £13 for that use, against £10 for Plan B. But if you never call overseas, the £5 does not belong in the calculation and Plan A remains cheaper. The purchase decision changes with your behaviour, not with an arbitrary brand ranking.
Billing period matters too. Twelve 30-day plan periods cover 360 days, not a 365-day year. A 12-month contract may be billed by calendar month. Use the exact start and end dates if comparing a whole year; do not pass `12 × 30-day price` off as a precise annual total.
To check real costs, start with the current SMARTY plan cards and Lebara plan cards. Open Full plan details to inspect the plan and commitment before using its View Deal route.
Which is better for international calls from the UK?
Lebara is the more promising option for regular calls to eligible overseas numbers. This is one of the clearest differences between the two providers, but it is only an advantage if your destination and type of number are covered by the particular plan you buy.
SMARTY's ordinary unlimited UK minutes do not mean unlimited calls to other countries. Its published rules say international calls from the UK normally require an out-of-plan add-on, with charges taken from that balance at the rate for the destination.
Lebara includes an international-minute allowance on selected SIM-only plans. That can be useful for conventional calls to mobiles or landlines abroad, but the included minutes, countries and number-type restrictions vary. A bigger UK data bundle does not guarantee a bigger or universally usable international allowance. Even a plan advertising unlimited international minutes is subject to the named destinations and its specific terms.
Check the number before you buy the tariff
- UK-to-overseas calling, or roaming? Calling an Indian or Polish telephone number from your home in the UK is not the same thing as using mobile data while you visit India or Poland. They use different benefits and charging rules.
- Mobile or landline? Do not assume a country being listed means every mobile network and every number range in that country is included.
- How many minutes? Compare an ordinary month of calls with the precise allowance, rather than the biggest number on the plan page.
- What is charged after the allowance? Check international rates, add-ons and premium or special-number exclusions before committing.
- Would a calling app work? App-to-app WhatsApp, Signal or FaceTime Audio calls use internet data or Wi-Fi rather than ordinary international phone minutes; the other person must be able to use the app.
For a practical example, a provider may list a destination with a named mobile network rather than every operator in that country. If you call Ukraine, India, Pakistan or elsewhere, check the country, mobile network or landline type and the exact tariff. A generic country label is not enough to verify your specific number.
If eligible international calls are your main reason for switching, begin with Lebara's available SIM plans; check the international-minute detail for the exact plan before paying. Our broader UK SIM guide for international calls covers alternatives when neither of these two suits your numbers.
Which offers better EU roaming: SMARTY or Lebara?
Lebara advertises the higher standard data ceiling: up to 30GB against SMARTY's usual 12GB on larger plans. The difference is potentially useful, but your actual allowance depends on the destination, the UK plan and fair-use terms.
SMARTY: its ordinary included EU roaming generally uses your UK data allowance, up to 12GB per plan period on plans with more than 12GB. Its official rules specifically exempt the Republic of Ireland from that fair-use ceiling. On larger plans, SMARTY offers separate EU roaming passes that can temporarily unlock more of your remaining UK data; those passes are not part of the usual free 12GB allowance. SMARTY also has a prolonged-roaming rule: after 60 consecutive days abroad, its published policy says it may suspend service, with warning in advance. It is not a permanent overseas SIM.
Lebara: its Roam Like Home scheme covers qualifying European destinations and India, with included data of up to 30GB, capped by the data allowance you actually buy. It is intended for short trips by UK-based customers; its published policy assesses EU roaming against UK use over a rolling 120-day period and may apply surcharges for prolonged higher overseas use. Activate the service in the UK before travelling, including for an eSIM where required. Do not assume an unlisted destination is included.
| Hypothetical UK allowance | SMARTY's usual included EU data cap | Lebara's advertised eligible roaming cap |
|---|---|---|
| 8GB | Up to 8GB | Up to 8GB |
| 20GB | Up to 12GB | Up to 20GB |
| 40GB | Up to 12GB | Up to 30GB |
| Unlimited | Up to 12GB | Up to 30GB |
These are examples applying the published standard ceilings to imaginary UK allowances, not current deals. SMARTY's Republic of Ireland exception, optional passes and the destination-specific rules are not represented in the table.
For a short trip using maps, messages and a few photos, SMARTY's normal allowance may be sufficient. For longer visits, regular hotspot use or work calls, Lebara's larger cap may make a material difference, assuming the underlying UK plan supports it. Neither provider's included EU benefit should be assumed to cover all of geographical Europe: Switzerland and Turkey, for instance, need a separate check. Cruise ships, ferries and border areas can also connect to unexpected networks.
If travel is the main deciding factor, our guide to SIMs for EU roaming explains the wider market. For this two-provider decision, check your destination against the latest official roaming conditions at the final provider offer reached through the relevant View Deal route. Start with our Lebara deals or SMARTY deals. Confirm the included countries, fair-use limit and any add-on charges before checkout.
Is SMARTY or Lebara faster on 4G and 5G?
There is no defensible blanket speed winner for every UK customer. Both offer 4G and 5G on compatible phones, but speed depends on where you use the service, the local spectrum and mast, the handset, indoor conditions and congestion.
VodafoneThree sharing gives SMARTY access to additional sites where enabled; it does not guarantee that Lebara and SMARTY will have the same signal, network priority or 5G performance. Nor is it evidence that every Vodafone tower is shared. Ofcom's local coverage predictions help with a first shortlist, but a genuine side-by-side test is more persuasive than an isolated national average.
For streaming, navigation and ordinary browsing, connection consistency may matter more than the highest download number. If you work from your phone, check upload stability and video-call quality. For commuting, test inside the bus or train you actually take. You should not rely on a 5G symbol alone to select a contract.
Can you tether or use your mobile as a hotspot?
SMARTY permits tethering on its ordinary consumer plans and advertises UK hotspot use. Lebara also permits tethering on eligible plans, including relevant roaming use. Your hotspot still consumes your plan's data, and your laptop or tablet may use much more data than your phone.
If you plan to replace home broadband or put the SIM into a router, check the device and fair-use terms for the exact offer. Do not confuse a normal phone bundle with a dedicated data-only SIM, and do not assume an unlimited UK allowance creates unlimited roaming-hotspot data.
Which is better for eSIM, Wi-Fi Calling and older phones?
SMARTY is the simpler eSIM starting point for many new customers. Its official eSIM information says eligible new customers can order an eSIM, and existing customers can move from a physical SIM, subject to device and activation requirements.
Lebara's new-customer eSIM availability is more restricted. In the official guidance checked on 28 October 2026, new-customer eSIM purchase was limited to Apple iPhone Air, whereas existing customers used a different route. This is a dated product-eligibility fact, not a permanent device list: check whether the sign-up process has expanded for your exact phone. Lebara's cards on DealPriceCheck may display 'Limited eSIM' without verifying that a particular handset or checkout is eligible. If you have an eSIM-only phone, confirm activation support before buying the plan.
Both providers support Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling (VoLTE) on supported handsets. Wi-Fi Calling can help indoors when mobile reception is weak, but it requires a working Wi-Fi connection and does not fix outdoor coverage. SMARTY's own support guidance says its Wi-Fi Calling does not work abroad; it is not a loophole for avoiding international or roaming charges.
For an older or imported phone, verify VoLTE support with the actual operator. SMARTY says it does not support 2G or 3G; a device working for 4G data on Three is not, by itself, proof of working calls on SMARTY. Having a 4G data connection does not guarantee the phone can place ordinary voice calls on either provider. More detail is in our Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE guide and UK eSIM network guide.
Which is better for families and several SIMs?
SMARTY has a specific Group-plan feature that may save a multi-line household money. Its published arrangements include Mix & Match discounts for added members and an Everyone Unlimited group option with a different shared-renewal and payment structure. Group ownership, membership and eligibility rules matter; do not assume a single-person promotional price also applies to every additional SIM.
For Lebara, compare the total cost of the individual plans your household would actually need. One person might need a generous international-minute allowance while another only wants light UK data. Buying the same larger plan for everyone can cost more than using different allowances.
SMARTY's older Data Discount plans also need a warning: the provider says they have been discontinued for new customers. Some existing users can retain the arrangement, but it is not a currently available reward for anyone joining SMARTY today. Do not mistake this old feature for general data rollover or money back on ordinary unused GB.
An unused monthly allowance, a purchased add-on balance and data rollover are separate concepts. If you repeatedly finish a period with unused data, a smaller plan can be better value than chasing a refund neither current standard plan guarantees. Our standard SMARTY deal cards are individual SIM offers: an advertised Group price may require a separate Group set-up and is not automatically the price behind a normal card. For households considering more than these two providers, see our family SIM-only comparison for broader multi-line comparisons.
Is it easier to get customer support from SMARTY or Lebara?
The channels differ. SMARTY primarily steers customers towards online chat and its help centre. Lebara offers online chat and phone support, including 5588 from a Lebara SIM, alongside account self-service. These are support routes, not independent evidence that one provider resolves problems faster. If you rely on phone support, factor that into your decision alongside coverage and price.
Do these providers help control unexpected costs?
Both promote no credit check and no annual price rises for their ordinary qualifying SIM-only ranges. SMARTY's prepaid rolling model also helps separate the cost of the plan from optional spending. But neither claim makes premium-rate calls, special numbers, non-included destinations or international add-ons free. And Lebara's no-annual-price-rise message does not cancel the minimum commitment of a separately sold 12-month plan.
Choose a plan according to the bills you could actually incur, not just the provider's headline promise. Confirm whether an out-of-allowance purchase requires credit or explicit opt-in on the specific product.
Who should choose SMARTY, and who should choose Lebara?
Choose SMARTY first if its Three-based service works well in your main locations, a flexible prepaid data plan meets your needs, your EU roaming fits the normal included limit, and you do not need regular paid calls to overseas telephone numbers. It is also worth comparing when an eligible SMARTY Group can reduce your total household spend or you need a supported new-customer eSIM route.
Choose Lebara first if Vodafone reception works better for you, your actual overseas numbers qualify for included international minutes, you value its larger eligible EU roaming allowance or India roaming, or one of its 30-day or 12-month plans offers the best true cost for the time you intend to stay. Confirm eSIM compatibility and any 12-month exit terms before ordering.
Keep your current SIM for now if both networks look unreliable at home, a must-have feature is unconfirmed, or the apparently cheaper offer depends on a commitment you cannot make. Test a temporary line first rather than porting your main number on an unverified promise.
A 30-second buying check: if both networks work locally, compare the same allowance on the same commitment; then ask whether you actually use international telephone minutes, more than SMARTY's standard EU roaming cap, or a new-customer eSIM on your device. If none applies, choose on dependable coverage and total price, not branding.
How do you switch between SMARTY and Lebara without losing your number?
Test the new service before transferring an important personal or work number, particularly if coverage is uncertain. You can normally start with a temporary number on the new SIM or eSIM and make the decision once it works where you need it.
When you are ready to move:
- Text INFO to 85075 from your current UK SIM to check switching information, including any potential early-termination charge.
- Text PAC to 65075 if you want to keep your number. If you deliberately want to switch without keeping it, use STAC to 75075 instead.
- Give the relevant code to the new provider and arrange the switch. PAC and STAC codes are normally valid for 30 days, and the provider-led switch typically completes within one working day after the new provider has the necessary details.
- After the transfer, test incoming and outgoing calls, mobile data, ordinary texts, voicemail and security-code SMS. Update any settings that did not migrate.
Do not manually cancel your existing number before arranging a PAC transfer. A PAC does not cancel a valid early-termination charge on a minimum-term contract. See Ofcom's official mobile switching guidance or our guide to keeping your number when switching.
Compare the plans before paying
A sensible buying order is coverage at your postcode → must-have features → commitment → true cost → final checkout terms.
- If SMARTY looks right: compare current SMARTY SIM-only offers and inspect the rolling period, data amount, eSIM eligibility and any Group conditions relevant to you. Group discounts or roaming passes may require a separate product or add-on, rather than being included on the displayed SIM card.
- If Lebara looks right: compare current Lebara SIM-only offers, distinguishing its 30-day and 12-month choices. Open Full plan details, then the existing tracked View Deal button to reach the offer. Confirm international destinations and eligible numbers, eSIM support, roaming allowance, introductory/renewal price and any exit terms. If a card says 'Not stated' for a buying-critical feature, do not assume it is included.
The best deal is the one that works on your phone, in your locations and for your planned usage. A lower price that fails any of those checks is not a saving.
SMARTY vs Lebara FAQs
Does the VodafoneThree merger mean SMARTY gets Lebara's signal everywhere?
No. SMARTY remains Three-based, and only some network-sharing sites have been enabled. The Ofcom coverage forecast is a useful starting point; a local call and data test is still the best check for your address.
Can I cancel a Lebara 30-day plan without paying for 12 months?
A qualifying 30-day rolling plan is different from a Lebara 12-month contract. Turning off auto-renewal normally stops future rolling payments, but does not necessarily refund the current paid period. Check which product the card identifies.
Is Lebara better for international calls?
Often, if the country and number type you actually dial are included in the chosen Lebara plan and its minutes cover your usage. SMARTY usually requires a paid out-of-plan add-on for international calls from the UK. App-to-app internet calls are a different cost question.
Is the 30GB Lebara roaming limit available on a 5GB UK plan?
No. The roaming benefit cannot exceed the qualifying UK data allowance. The up-to-30GB figure is a ceiling for eligible plans and destinations, not extra data granted to a smaller UK bundle.
Is calling India from the UK included just because India roaming is offered?
No. Calls made from the UK to India and using your SIM while in India are separate services. Check both the international-minutes eligibility and the roaming policy on your exact Lebara plan.
Can I join Lebara with an eSIM on any Android phone?
Do not assume so. Lebara's published new-customer guidance checked in October 2026 named iPhone Air, while existing customers had a different migration route. Get current device-specific confirmation before purchasing. SMARTY advertises new-customer eSIM for eligible devices.
Do SMARTY or Lebara carry out credit checks?
Both advertise no credit check for their standard qualifying SIM-only sign-up. That does not remove identification or payment requirements, premium-number charges or, for a Lebara 12-month product, the contract commitment.
Does SMARTY refund unused data or roll it over?
Do not assume that a current SMARTY plan does. The old Data Discount plans have been discontinued for new customers. Treat an existing legacy Data Discount account, an add-on balance and a normal current plan allowance as different products.
Can I move my existing UK number from one to the other?
Yes. Text PAC to 65075 from your current number, pass the code to your new provider and let it arrange the transfer. Check any unexpired minimum-term charges first, and do not cancel the old line manually before porting.
