Lebara vs Three: Which UK SIM Is Better?

Short answer: Lebara is a strong first choice if Vodafone reception works at your addresses, you want a flexible 30-day SIM, or you regularly make eligible international calls and use its included Europe and India roaming. Three can be the better buy if its network works better where you actually use your phone, or a specific Three Lite, Lite+, Value or Complete deal offers the data, speed and roaming package you need at a competitive total cost. Don't assume Three has faster 5G everywhere, or that Lebara is always cheaper.

Key facts before you compare:

Lebara's flexibility and Three's retail extras are different products, so a low introductory payment alone cannot decide the winner.

Compare current deals: Compare Lebara SIM-only deals and Three SIM-only deals. If you need 30GB, examine the Lebara 30GB rolling card and Lebara 30GB 12-month card, then the nearest relevant Three products. The first card offers flexibility; the second has a minimum term. The decision isn't just a coverage contest. For a buyer who calls India every week, a Lebara bundle with the right international minutes may be worth more than a cheaper-looking Three plan. For someone who needs Three's reception and an eligible Complete roaming package, the balance may run the other way.

Which has better UK coverage: Lebara or Three?

Check Vodafone against Three at your actual postcodes. Lebara uses Vodafone's radio network, while Three sells service on its own network. The two brands are connected through the VodafoneThree merger, but they remain distinct retail services with different commercial terms and feature eligibility. A national population-coverage percentage will not tell you which SIM makes a reliable call in your kitchen or on your commute.

Use Ofcom's Map Your Mobile coverage checker to compare predicted indoor and outdoor 4G and 5G coverage at home and work, then inspect the journeys where you lose signal. A green outdoor coverage prediction isn't a promise of dependable indoor calling. Ofcom's local performance scores are area-level estimates, not controlled speed tests of Lebara and Three SIMs in your home.

Does the VodafoneThree merger mean both SIMs now have the same signal?

No. VodafoneThree has deployed network-sharing technology, but the benefits depend on the brand, location, enabled infrastructure and rollout arrangements. Three's retail customers can benefit from its advertised integration. That does not prove every Lebara customer has the same access to shared masts, radio bands or 5G capabilities. Don't treat the merger as a substitute for checking the precise service you intend to buy.

The underlying network picture is explained in our Vodafone-network guide and Three-network guide. This comparison concentrates on whether Lebara's and Three's actual retail plans justify their different costs.

Is Three 5G faster than Lebara 5G?

Three's network can perform better than Vodafone's in some locations, but a network-wide result isn't a guarantee that a particular Three SIM will beat Lebara on your phone. Handset capabilities, congestion, building materials and the exact tariff limit all matter. A plan advertising 5G might still impose a lower maximum download speed than your phone could otherwise achieve.

The Three Your Way SIM-only price guide effective 12 October 2026 describes Lite, Value and Complete as offering maximum downloads of up to 100Mbps, while eligible Lite+ includes the Full Speed add-on. This describes the applicable published plan family, not a universal cap for every past or future Three product. The product label and current contract summary determine which restriction applies to a new offer. Complete is a more feature-rich package, not automatically an uncapped-speed product. If fast tethering or large downloads matter, compare the exact Three tier before paying for a premium package.

If you mainly message, use maps and watch ordinary video, a consistent 4G/5G connection and the right price may matter more than peak benchmark figures. We have not run controlled head-to-head Lebara/Three speed tests and won't claim a measured winner.

Compare Lebara vs Three: 10GB, 30GB, 100GB and Unlimited

Compare a usable allowance first, then match the commitment. The UK offer ranges aren't always mirror images. Lebara currently has identifiable 30GB, 100GB and Unlimited products on our cards; its 15GB option can be a practical alternative for someone searching for roughly 10GB. Our selected Three catalogue currently shows 25GB, 120GB and Unlimited rather than exact 10GB and 100GB matches. Three's October 2026 Three Your Way SIM-only price guide also lists 12GB and 30GB for certain one-month and 12-month configurations, but publication in an official range does not prove a particular 12GB or 30GB promotion is available to purchase today. The 24-month data range in the same guide differs again; check the specific term rather than treating every allowance as universally available.

UnlimitedLebara Unlimited rolling or Unlimited 12-monthThree Unlimited 24-month card and any eligible shorter-term alternativeSame UK-data category, not necessarily the same speed, fair use, roaming or term

These are real named options, not a fixed cheapest-price ranking. A 24-month Three card must not be placed against a 30-day Lebara card as though cancelling after three months costs the same. Some Lebara cards carry duplicate-looking 30GB or Unlimited titles with different prices or commercial terms; check the offer behind the chosen SKU instead of assuming identical allowances mean identical benefits.

Around 10GB: does buying more data help?

If you use 8–10GB in an ordinary month, a suitable 15GB Lebara product gives breathing space, but it is still an over-provisioned comparison against a 10GB target. The official Three price guide lists 12GB in certain one-month and 12-month SIM-only configurations, so a live 12GB quote, if available, is the closer allowance match. The listed Three 25GB Lite contract might still be worthwhile when its full-year cost or coverage is better. It might also be a poor purchase if the headline promotion requires two years of payments.

Estimate your actual monthly consumption from your phone settings. Check UK calls and texts too: some entry-level Lebara bundles have finite minutes and texts, unlike many Three mainstream SIM-only offers. Our mobile data needs guide helps identify whether buying extra GB is useful.

30GB: flexible Lebara or a Three Lite/Value/Complete contract?

30GB is a sensible test case because it is a recognisable allowance in both operators' wider ranges. The question is which Three tier and term you can actually buy, and at what sequence of prices. Compare Three Lite against Lebara 30-day if you're mainly using ordinary data, but count any minimum-term liability. Move to Value only if its eligible European roaming and any subscription inclusion on the specific SIM-only term justify the price. Three's price guide describes a limited-period Paramount+ inclusion on selected Value SIM-only contracts, while its general Three Your Way marketing also describes Paramount+ as an optional add-on for Value. Confirm the actual contract rather than presuming free entertainment. Move to Complete only if wider roaming or a genuinely included subscription is worth the extra charge. A higher Three tier does not automatically provide faster maximum data than Lite.

If the only Three card you can currently find is a 25GB or 120GB promotion, say that openly: you have moved from a 30GB like-for-like comparison to a different allowance. Use the Lebara 30GB 12-month card to compare an actual one-year commitment with an eligible Three 12-month quotation, rather than silently comparing it with a 24-month Three offer.

100GB: is a 120GB Three deal worth a longer contract?

A 120GB Three offer may be a strong buy for someone whose UK use routinely reaches 90–100GB and who has good Three signal. However, its extra 20GB is worthless if you typically use 35GB. Compare Lebara 100GB rolling and 100GB for 12 months with the Three 120GB card by total obligation, not the first payment.

Also check Three's speed tier and roaming: 120GB at home does not necessarily mean 120GB abroad. If your main use is a laptop hotspot, test indoor reception and working speeds where the laptop will actually be used. An extra data allowance cannot fix unstable coverage or a restrictive maximum speed.

Unlimited: is unlimited data really equivalent?

Both sell UK Unlimited products, but unlimited UK data is not unlimited roaming and doesn't guarantee unlimited speed. A Three Lite Unlimited may have a speed cap, while a suitable Lite+ offer adds Full Speed; Value or Complete have other benefits rather than automatically removing all speed limits. Compare the specific Three Unlimited card with the Lebara Unlimited rolling and 12-month Unlimited. Confirm fair use, UK hotspot permission, the network where you spend most time and all future charges.

If you rarely pass 60GB, a suitable finite-data plan may be cheaper on either network. Our 100GB vs Unlimited guide examines this wider decision separately.

Which is cheaper over a full year, including promotional prices?

There is no permanent winner. For a meaningful answer, compare the same service dates, the minimum commitment and the payments actually due. Lebara's live catalogue contains 30-day and 12-month products. Three's selected cards can display low introductory payments followed by higher monthly charges and April price increases. A first-month amount is not a valid full-year cost. In the current Three catalogue, the headline monthly price can be markedly below the effective monthly cost calculated from the minimum contract payments. That difference is a prompt to open the plan details and read the whole price schedule, not proof that Three is always more expensive.

For a continuous 365-day period, a plan that renews in exact 30-day blocks needs 13 paid periods because twelve blocks cover only 360 days. That is a continuous-service calculation, not a claim that all 390 purchased days fall inside the comparison year. The thirteenth purchase extends service beyond day 365; don't pretend all 390 days were consumed. A 12-month contract normally means twelve calendar billing periods, while a 24-month contract still obliges you beyond month twelve unless you have a specific lawful exit right.

How to calculate a promotional 12-month total

Use the real payment schedule on the Lebara cards and Three cards, not a flat monthly estimate:

Payment patternFormula for an illustrative first yearWhat matters
Lebara 30-day rolling with a constant renewal price P13 × P for 365 days of continuous coverPrices may change at renewal; compare whole dates
Lebara 12-month contract at M each month12 × M, plus any upfront chargeA minimum commitment applies
Three 12-month tariff with first a bills at promo I, then regular Ra × I + (12 − a) × R, adjusted for any riseOffer-specific promo end and April increase
Three 24-month contract with a first-year payment patternAdd the first 12 actual payments, but also record the remaining liabilityA cheap first year doesn't cancel the second-year commitment

Fictional example, not a published Lebara or Three price: a contract at £7 for three months followed by £16 for nine months costs £165 in its first twelve payments, before any additional increase. A rolling 30-day bundle at £12 per renewal needs thirteen payments for continuous cover over 365 days, costing £156 if the price does not change. The rolling choice is £9 cheaper over that period and can be stopped without an equivalent two-year commitment, but only if it meets the same data and service needs.

This formula has a second purpose: it prevents a promotional Three rate from winning a comparison simply because the cost of months four to twelve was hidden. If an April increase falls inside the first year, split the schedule at that date and add the actual new bills. If an advertised price steps up before the April rise, count both changes. Annual cost is different from minimum contract cost; you need both when the contract lasts 24 months.

What do Three's annual price increases change?

Three's published 2026 pay-monthly terms provide fixed pound-and-pence annual increases by data band, normally from 1 April, and product pages can show additional introductory step-ups. The amounts and rules depend on which agreement you actually sign. A plan with 100GB or more can fall in a different increase band from one with 30GB. Never apply a tariff-wide percentage from an old review to a new agreement without checking the final terms.

For a 24-month deal, note the starting payment, date the introduction ends, each annual increase date, total minimum contract cost and early termination charge. Some Three catalogue prices are introductory offers with substantially higher later payments. On the relevant contracts Three also publishes fixed annual rises according to the plan's data band; a promotion ending and an April contractual increase are separate events. Our SIM-only price rises guide explains the difference; the provider's final schedule takes priority over a catalogue summary.

Lebara's 12-month range is not its flexible 30-day range

Lebara's eligible current SIM-only range is advertised without annual in-contract rises, but that isn't a perpetual guarantee that an individual 30-day price will renew forever. One plan can have a 12-month minimum commitment while another is a rolling bundle that you can stop. If you're likely to leave after four months, the lower monthly figure on a one-year contract may be poor value once you count its remaining obligations.

For a one-year buyer, compare the Lebara 30GB annual offer with a genuine Three 12-month quote, if offered. Don't substitute a Three 24-month promotion and forget the second twelve months. If buying through a live provider card, trust the final contractual payment schedule over static explanatory copy.

Three Lite, Lite+, Value and Complete: what do you actually get?

The tier is often more important than the operator's headline data allowance. In Three's published Three Your Way SIM-only structure, the differences include speed and roaming rights. Availability varies by term and sales channel, and old contract versions may have different benefits.

Three tierBroadly what it buysKey qualification
LiteCore UK calls, texts and data with a lower-priced tierPublished examples have a speed cap; Go Roam generally not included
Lite+Lite benefits plus the Full Speed add-onNot every data/term configuration offers Lite+; verify actual checkout
ValueEligible Go Roam in Europe; October 2026 SIM-only price guide also describes time-limited Paramount+ on specified 12/24-month versionsGeneral Three marketing treats Paramount+ as optional for Value, so verify the specific sales route; no automatic Full Speed
CompleteEligible wider Go Roam bands and Paramount+ for the full term in the reviewed SIM-only guideWider roaming does not mean every country, unlimited overseas data or uncapped downloads; verify SKU eligibility

Does Lite+ make Three the obvious 5G winner?

No. Lite+ can remove the specified Lite maximum-speed restriction, but a network must still deliver signal and available capacity at your location. Nor should a 100Mbps cap be equated with a 100Mbps minimum. If you're using a phone for everyday browsing, the cost of Lite+ may not be justified. If you download large files or work using a mobile hotspot, the extra headroom can be valuable, provided Three's signal is strong.

When is Value or Complete worth more than Lebara?

Value is attractive if its eligible European roaming replaces paid passes you would otherwise purchase. Complete becomes more interesting if you travel to included destinations outside Europe frequently enough to offset its larger subscription cost. Its entertainment benefit may have value if you'd otherwise buy that subscription, but it shouldn't be assigned a fictional cash value if you never use it.

Compare that with Lebara's included international calling and eligible Roam Like Home benefits. If you mostly stay in the UK and call relatives abroad, an expensive Complete plan can be a poor trade just to get perks you won't use. If Three has much better local signal or a particular Go Roam destination is included on Complete but not on Lebara, Three may genuinely justify its premium.

Lebara international calling vs Three: who saves more?

Lebara is the obvious starting point for regular conventional calls to eligible overseas numbers. Qualifying bundles include international minutes to specified countries, but the minutes, number types and country lists can differ. Some smaller Lebara bundles also limit UK calls or texts. Three's mainstream unlimited UK calls and texts do not mean unlimited calling to foreign numbers; ordinary international calls can be charged separately or require a paid add-on.

A real decision depends on which overseas number you dial

Check the international dialling code, destination, mobile versus landline, included minutes and the charge once you've used them. Calling a Polish mobile, an Indian landline or a premium-rate international number are not interchangeable services just because the country appears in an inclusion list.

Illustrative calculation: if you call a qualifying foreign mobile for 100 minutes and Three would charge a hypothetical 15p a minute for those calls, that adds £15 to the period. If a suitable Lebara plan genuinely includes those exact 100 minutes, there would be no per-minute charge within the allowance. Neither the 15p rate nor any particular bundle inclusion is being stated as the current rate for your number. Check the provider's actual price guide or bundle terms.

Before paying more for an international-minute bundle, ask whether you actually need conventional calling. WhatsApp or Signal calls to someone using the same app use data or Wi-Fi instead of ordinary overseas voice minutes. They aren't a substitute when the recipient only has a normal landline.

Our international calling SIM guide covers the broader market. This article stays focused on what Lebara and Three charge for their own retail products.

Lebara Roam Like Home vs Three Go Roam

Roaming can reverse the price winner. Lebara's eligible Roam Like Home service covers selected European destinations and India, with included data up to the smaller of the UK plan allowance and 30GB. Three uses tier- and contract-specific Go Roam arrangements: Lite generally needs paid access in supported places, Value offers eligible Europe, and Complete offers broader eligible bands. The rules for older Three agreements can differ from new ones.

Frequent European tripsLong-stay fair use, plan data and overseas callingIs paying for Value cheaper than separate roaming charges over the year?

A long stay abroadFair-use/time-based rules; don't treat tourist roaming as permanent serviceIncluded-pass duration or day limits, fair use and daily charges

Why does Three's 12GB roaming figure matter?

On relevant Three Go Roam services, using UK data abroad is normally subject to up to 12GB of fair-use data, even when the UK plan says 120GB or Unlimited. This isn't the full picture: a qualifying Value or Complete tier may include the roaming access itself, while Lite or some older contract types need a charge or pass. Paying for access and how much data you're permitted to use are two separate questions.

Lebara's higher advertised 30GB ceiling isn't an automatic 30GB entitlement either. A 10GB UK allowance cannot turn into 30GB of overseas data. Destination eligibility, the original UK plan and its fair-use policy still control use. Heavy roaming hotspot users should calculate the required overseas allowance and any extra costs before deciding.

Is Three Complete better for worldwide travel?

For some destinations, yes. The published Complete tier offers a wider collection of Go Roam bands than Value, including eligible countries beyond Europe. That can beat Lebara when your regular travel falls in a Three-inclusive band and Lebara would need a paid add-on. Equally, Lebara's India inclusion could be more economical if India is your main destination and you do not need Complete's other extras.

Hypothetical value test: a higher-tier Three plan costs £6 more per month than a suitable basic alternative. That's £72 over twelve months. If its roaming benefit would replace only £20 of charges during one trip, the premium isn't paid back by roaming alone. If it genuinely replaces £120 of travel costs over several trips, it may be justified. Those numbers are examples, not today's plan or pass prices.

Spend caps, fair use and eSIM activation can spoil the trip

A £0 or insufficient Three Spend Cap can block chargeable Go Roam usage. Check your tier, destination and cap in My3 before travelling. Lebara's EU Roam Like Home rules include a rolling 120-day comparison of EU and UK usage, so a long stay can trigger fair-use surcharges even when the destination is eligible.

Lebara recommends activating a new SIM/eSIM in the UK before travel. Its current eSIM help says the included Roam Like Home data allowance is temporarily blocked while roaming in the EU or India during the first seven days after eSIM activation. This is a data allowance restriction, not a blanket statement that all calls and texts stop. Check your activation date and any separate roaming add-on if you will travel immediately. Neither provider's UK unlimited allowance means unlimited overseas data. See our EU roaming guide for other options.

Which SIM is better for eSIM, Wi-Fi Calling, 4G Calling and hotspots?

Both offer modern network features, but they're not equally easy to activate on every phone. Three offers eSIM as part of its eligible Three Your Way range, with QR-code or supported seamless activation. Lebara offers eSIM too, but its current guidance restricts self-service new-customer eSIM sign-up to specific Apple hardware, with separate arrangements for existing customers. If you need to transfer an eSIM immediately to another phone, confirm eligibility and the exact process before ordering.

Both support Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling on compatible handsets, subject to network provisioning. Three has completed its 3G shutdown, which makes 4G Calling (VoLTE) especially important for older or imported devices. A phone that can use 4G data is not automatically a phone that can make voice calls over 4G. If you're buying for a parent or using a second-hand phone, compatibility is a purchase requirement, not a minor footnote.

What about tethering a laptop or using a mobile router?

Normal UK hotspot use is possible on suitable plans and devices, subject to fair use. The more important questions are your realistic data consumption, coverage, Three's maximum speed for the chosen tier and whether you can exit the agreement if the service won't work at home. A laptop can consume tens of gigabytes through backups, updates and video meetings without any extraordinary behaviour.

If the SIM will run a household router or business connection every day, test it during busy hours and confirm the network's terms for that kind of equipment. Check overseas tethering separately: domestic hotspot permission doesn't automatically make all roaming data unrestricted. Our hotspot and tethering guide covers sizing a plan for this use.

Can you keep your number moving from Three to Lebara or back?

Usually, yes. For a standard single-line UK mobile number, text PAC to 65075 from the SIM you're leaving and give the code to your new provider. Ofcom says a PAC is normally valid for 30 days and an eligible transfer normally completes within one working day after the new provider accepts it. If you don't want to keep your number, text STAC to 75075. Text INFO to 85075 to check your existing contract and potential charges.

A PAC does not erase a minimum-term Three or Lebara liability or outstanding handset finance. Multi-line or business accounts may need different instructions. If your main number receives banking codes or important work calls, test the new network with a temporary number first, then port when you're satisfied. See Ofcom's switching rules and our number-switching guide.

Lebara vs Three: frequently asked questions

Is Lebara better than Three?

Lebara is often a sensible first choice if Vodafone signal is reliable and you need a flexible SIM, included calls to eligible overseas numbers or Roam Like Home. Three can be better when its local reception or a particular data, speed or Go Roam package justifies the full contract cost. Neither is universally better.

Does Lebara use Three's network?

Lebara is Vodafone-hosted; Three is a separate retail service. Both are affected by VodafoneThree network integration, but that doesn't guarantee identical site access, signal, speeds or tariff features. Check each service locally.

Which has better 5G, Three or Lebara?

There's no guaranteed winner at every location. Three can perform strongly, but the selected retail tier may cap maximum downloads; eligible Lite+ includes Full Speed. Lebara depends on Vodafone radio coverage and its own plan and handset eligibility.

Is Lebara cheaper than Three over 12 months?

It can be. Compare the exact data you need and calculate every payment, not just the first promotional rate. Twelve 30-day bundle cycles cover only 360 days, and a Three 24-month contract leaves a second-year liability even if you're calculating its first-year payments.

Does Three have 10GB, 30GB and 100GB SIMs?

Available allowances vary by product range and sales channel. Three's published plans include a 30GB tier, but the selected live DealPriceCheck cards have shown nearby 20GB/25GB and 120GB offers rather than confirmed exact 10GB or 100GB cards. Check which SKU is actually on sale before comparing prices.

Are Three Lite and Complete both unlimited-speed plans?

No such assumption is safe. Three's published Three Your Way terms describe a maximum speed on Lite, Value and Complete; eligible Lite+ includes a Full Speed benefit. Read the exact plan and contract version.

Is Three Value better for EU roaming?

Value includes eligible Go Roam in Europe on qualifying current terms; that can be useful if you'd otherwise buy passes. Lebara's Roam Like Home can still be better if its eligible destination and roaming allowance meet your needs at a lower total cost.

Does Three Complete include worldwide roaming?

Complete's published benefits cover broader eligible Go Roam bands than Value, not every country on earth and not unlimited overseas data. Check the destination, UK allowance, the relevant 12GB fair-use cap and any extra charges.

Does Lebara include India roaming?

Lebara advertises India under its eligible Roam Like Home scheme, with a roaming data ceiling of the smaller of your UK allowance and 30GB plus fair-use rules. Calling India from the UK is a different benefit from roaming there.

Is Lebara good for international calls compared with Three?

Qualifying Lebara bundles include minutes to selected international destinations, whereas Three's ordinary UK unlimited minutes don't automatically cover international numbers. The better plan depends on the country, number type, minutes and current charges.

Does Three support eSIM and Wi-Fi Calling?

Three offers eSIM on eligible Three Your Way plans and supports Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling on compatible devices. Lebara also has these features, but its current new-customer eSIM eligibility is more restricted. Check your exact phone and activation route.

Can I tether on Three Unlimited or Lebara Unlimited?

Normal UK tethering is possible on suitable plans and compatible devices, subject to terms and fair use. Check the Three tier's speed policy, and don't assume the same UK allowance or tethering rights apply abroad.

Can I keep my number when switching between them?

Verdict: Lebara or Three?

If Vodafone works at the places that matter and you want international calls, eligible roaming or a flexible 30-day SIM, start with Lebara's current plans and the 30GB rolling or 100GB rolling cards. If you want a year-long commitment, check the Lebara 30GB 12-month option.

If Three works better or its exact Lite+, Value or Complete benefits suit you, compare the current Three retail plans honestly against those Lebara alternatives. Don't let a heavily discounted opening payment hide future prices or a two-year contract, and don't assume an expensive Three tier guarantees uncapped speeds. Choose the tariff that gives you dependable local service and the lowest real cost for your usage.
