Lyca Mobile vs Talkmobile: Which Budget SIM Is Better?
Quick answer: Choose Lyca Mobile first if EE is better at your postcode, you call eligible overseas numbers from the UK, or a qualifying bundle gives you more roaming data in a country you visit. Choose Talkmobile first if Vodafone or locally enabled VodafoneThree service works better, you want unlimited standard UK calls and texts on its regular SIM plans, or you need a destination in its roaming Zone A, such as Switzerland or Ukraine. Both advertise eSIM and Wi-Fi Calling for compatible devices. Compare the same usable UK data, then check the destination-specific roaming cap, any international minutes and total renewal cost.

These companies are not simply two prices for the same signal. Lyca uses EE's UK radio network; Talkmobile is part of the Vodafone family and advertises access to the evolving VodafoneThree combination. They can be very different choices at one address and nearly interchangeable at another.
Two details can decide this comparison immediately: a small Lyca UK Plan Smart bundle advertises 1,000 UK minutes and texts, whereas Talkmobile's standard current SIM-only range includes unlimited standard UK calls and texts. For travel, Talkmobile publishes a 5GB inclusive data limit for people joining or upgrading from 14 March 2023, but names countries such as Switzerland and Ukraine in Zone A. Lyca bundles have different country lists and limits, including certain higher-data EU or India options. Never treat one provider's largest roaming allowance as standard on every plan.
Is Lyca Mobile or Talkmobile better for UK coverage?
Neither can be declared the coverage winner for every postcode. Lyca connects over EE; Talkmobile's primary network is Vodafone, with additional VodafoneThree coverage being introduced. A useful comparison checks those underlying networks where you actually make calls and use data.
Talkmobile now advertises automatic access to both Vodafone and Three networks as integration allows. That is an important development, but it does not establish that every Three mast, every radio band or every future feature is already available to every Talkmobile user. Equally, an EE-based Lyca SIM is not guaranteed to deliver every EE-branded retail feature or an identical speed result in a crowded area.
Check signal in three places before switching
- Enter your home postcode into Ofcom's Map Your Mobile. Compare predicted indoor 4G, outdoor 4G and 5G rather than relying on an overall percentage.
- Repeat the check for work, a family member's address and any railway route or rural destination that matters. National coverage rankings cannot tell you whether a particular building blocks the signal.
- Check Talkmobile's current combined-network availability for your area, then try a spare physical SIM or eSIM if you need reliable calling. Test a call, an incoming security text and mobile data indoors at a busy time.
The same address can have excellent EE 5G but poor Vodafone reception, or the reverse. If one family of networks performs badly in your kitchen, a cheaper tariff on that network is not a bargain.
For the difference between host coverage, retail service and speed limits, read our MVNO coverage and speeds guide.
Which is cheaper, Lyca Mobile or Talkmobile?
Neither brand stays cheapest at every data allowance or over every term. Lyca has 30-day prepaid and pay-monthly products, while Talkmobile offers rolling 30-day deals and separately priced 12-month contracts. The fair comparison is the total cost of getting enough usable data, calls and roaming for the period you will actually keep the SIM.
Start with Lyca's current SIM cards and Talkmobile's live offers. Choose a similar data requirement, inspect the contract term and any step-up from a promotional price, then open Full plan details. The cheapest first payment does not establish the cheapest year.
| Your normal use | Compare these types of plans | What can change the winner |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly Wi-Fi, under 5GB on mobile | Lyca's small prepaid bundle against the smallest suitable Talkmobile rolling plan | UK calls/texts included, actual amount of data and renewal price |
| Around 10–30GB a month | Lyca mid-data 30-day plan against a similar Talkmobile 30-day plan | International minutes, indoor reception and roaming GB |
| Around 50–100GB | High-data plans with enough ordinary UK data | Fair use, hotspot requirements and the price after promotions |
| Very heavy data | Eligible unlimited or high-data products, not just the word “unlimited” | Tethering policies, minimum term and separate overseas caps |
| Regular calls to eligible international numbers | Lyca's included minutes against Talkmobile plus the actual calling charges | Country, mobile/landline eligibility and minutes used |
| Several trips to Europe | Home plan cost plus any data top-ups above the roaming cap | Talkmobile's 5GB new-customer cap versus Lyca's particular plan limit |
A fair cost example: international calls can outweigh a cheaper SIM
Imagine two hypothetical 30-day products with enough UK data. One costs £8 but has no included calls to your overseas number. The other costs £10 and includes your first 100 eligible international minutes. Assume calls on the first cost 20p per minute; these are illustrative figures, not current plan prices or quoted operator call rates.
| Minutes to that eligible number | £8 plan + calls at 20p/min | £10 plan including first 100 minutes |
|---|---|---|
| 0 minutes | £8 | £10 |
| 10 minutes | £10 | £10 |
| 40 minutes | £16 | £10 |
| 80 minutes | £24 | £10 |
At 10 minutes the two hypothetical options break even. At 40 minutes the plan with included calls saves £6. But if your destination is excluded from the second plan's allowance, that saving vanishes. Check the number type and included country before buying.
How do you compare a promotion with a 12-month contract?
Write down every payment, including the first discounted months and the later standard rate, rather than multiplying an introductory headline by twelve. For instance, an illustrative 12-month contract priced at £5 for three months and £10 for nine months costs £105 over the minimum term, before any separately chargeable use. A £9 rolling contract paid twelve times costs £108 over those twelve billing periods. That £3 difference is not worth much if you need to leave the fixed contract early, or if the networks and allowances are not equally suitable.
Also note that 12 renewals of a 30-day bundle cover 360 days, not an entire 365-day year. For 12-month contracts, check the actual contractual billing schedule. If you intend to move networks after a few weeks, flexibility can be more valuable than a modest headline saving.
For wider tariff choices, use our SIM-only deals under £10 catalogue rather than a fixed list of old promotional prices.
An actual 30GB-to-30GB comparison from our catalogue
An illustrative cost example teaches the maths, but you also need a like-for-like starting point with real product terms. The following existing internal deal-detail pages let you compare a similar UK data allowance without baking changing promotional prices into this guide:
| Check | Lyca Mobile National Plus | Talkmobile 30GB SIM only |
|---|---|---|
| Selected UK allowance | 30GB | 30GB |
| Current catalogue format | 30-day rolling | 30-day rolling |
| Network to test | EE | Vodafone with locally available VodafoneThree sharing |
| Included roaming data advertised on these selected cards | Up to 12GB in eligible EU destinations | Normally up to 5GB in published Zone A destinations for new customers |
| UK calls and texts shown on these selected cards | Unlimited standard calls and texts | Unlimited standard calls and texts |
| DealPriceCheck plan details | Lyca National Plus 30GB | Talkmobile 30GB |
How to decide: if you normally use only 4GB abroad, both allowances could be sufficient in an eligible country, so signal and total recurring cost should carry more weight. If you expect 8GB in France, the selected Lyca plan may avoid additional data charges that the selected Talkmobile plan would not. If you go to Switzerland or Ukraine, Talkmobile's published Zone A list may be the better route; check Lyca's exact destination entitlement instead of assuming the same countries. Both are catalogue snapshots, not a guarantee of future availability, plan eligibility or checkout price. Open each plan page, then its existing purchase route to confirm the final terms.
For heavy usage, the Lyca UK Plan Unlimited details advertise a different, plan-specific roaming cap from National Plus, while the Lyca 24 Month Unlimited details have a longer commitment and their own allowance. Neither should be compared as though it were a 30-day 30GB plan. Use the plan-specific details and conditions before choosing.
Is Lyca Mobile or Talkmobile better for international calls?
Lyca has the more relevant starting proposition for frequent eligible international calls from the UK. Many current Lyca bundles advertise included minutes to selected overseas destinations, while Talkmobile publishes destination-specific calling charges. Neither arrangement should be chosen from the words “international calls” alone.
Lyca's ordinary advertised bundles may include 100 international minutes, but eligibility depends on the exact product, country and whether the destination is a mobile or landline. Specialist Lyca international bundles can have different lists or allowances. A 30-day UK data card is not proof that every international calling package is included in its checkout.
Talkmobile generally treats calls from the UK to foreign numbers as a chargeable service outside its unlimited standard UK minutes. The price depends on the destination zone and number type. If you only call overseas a few minutes a month, you may not need to switch plans or pay for extra included minutes.
Three calls that look alike but are billed differently
- Calling a Polish +48 mobile from Manchester: an international call from the UK. Check Lyca's included Polish mobile eligibility or Talkmobile's applicable international rate.
- Using your UK SIM while physically in Poland: roaming. UK-to-Poland international minutes do not tell you how many gigabytes you can use in Poland.
- Calling a family member's +44 UK number while they are visiting Poland: normally a UK-number call from your side. Their roaming arrangements may be separate.
If you mainly speak to family through WhatsApp or another app over home Wi-Fi, the cost of international telephone-number calls may matter less than UK data coverage and price. Carrier Wi-Fi Calling is different: it is still an ordinary tariff-rated voice call, not automatically free international calling.
Practical rule: write down the two or three international numbers you call most, their country codes, whether they are mobile or landline and roughly how many minutes you use. A package with more headline international minutes is worthless for a number it excludes.
Our international-calling SIM guide compares calling arrangements across providers. When the country is the main decision, use a country-specific guide rather than relying on one all-country claim.
Which is better for European roaming?
Talkmobile's standard new-customer offering generally gives up to 5GB of inclusive data in its published Zone A destinations. Lyca's included roaming data depends on the exact bundle and can be smaller or larger. Some destinations included by Talkmobile are not automatically in Lyca's standard EU roaming set, so check both the destination and the data cap.
Talkmobile's published rules distinguish customers who joined or upgraded before 14 March 2023, for whom a higher historic limit can apply, from later customers generally limited to 5GB per billing month of inclusive roaming data. Its Zone A includes many European destinations beyond the EU, such as Switzerland, and lists the Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Ukraine. Those should not be assumed to qualify on Lyca merely because its product says EU roaming.
Lyca displays different plan-specific limits. For example, its UK Plan Smart advertises 5GB of UK data with up to 5GB EU roaming. National Plus advertises 30GB at home but up to 12GB EU roaming. Lyca's separately listed UK Plan Unlimited advertises a larger 35GB EU and India roaming allowance. Those are examples of published product entitlements, not the allowances on every Lyca plan or a promise that all countries use the same pot. Some Lyca general roaming-policy pages describe broader default limits that differ from individual product advertising; the precise selected plan's binding terms and eligible destinations must take priority when you buy.
| Your trip | Lyca: check this | Talkmobile: check this |
|---|---|---|
| Long weekend in France | Exact plan's EU allowance, including smaller-plan limits | France in Zone A; normal new-customer 5GB fair-use cap |
| Week in Switzerland | Do not assume it is in Lyca's EU list | Switzerland is listed in Talkmobile Zone A; 5GB limit normally applies |
| Holiday in India | Only qualifying Lyca products explicitly include India roaming; check that plan's limit | India is not Zone A; check World Holiday Booster and its cost |
| Visiting Ukraine | Do not infer inclusion from “EU roaming”; check the precise Lyca country list | Ukraine is on Talkmobile's published Zone A country list |
| Working abroad with a hotspot | Check roaming, device and long-stay fair-use terms | Check the 5GB data cap, top-up cost and long-stay policy |
As a simple calculation, if you typically use 1GB a day for seven days, that is around 7GB. A 5GB included roaming allowance leaves roughly 2GB to cover through Wi-Fi, a booster or another legitimate arrangement. If the Lyca plan you selected genuinely includes 12GB for the destination, it may work better. Conversely, a non-EU destination included by Talkmobile might reverse the result.
Do not confuse the UK home data allowance with the number of gigabytes available abroad. A 100GB home SIM can still have a 5GB roaming limit. Our UK EU-roaming SIM guide compares other options when travel is your main priority.
Is Talkmobile faster than Lyca Mobile on 4G or 5G?
There is no credible permanent national winner for every buyer. Lyca uses EE's network family and Talkmobile uses Vodafone with evolving VodafoneThree sharing. Speeds on each depend on your phone, the exact plan, coverage, congestion and where you are standing. A national host-network average does not establish that every budget reseller delivers identical performance on every tariff.
Older comparison articles sometimes award Lyca a 4G win or Talkmobile a 5G win using historic speed-test averages and counts of towns with 5G. Those comparisons are particularly fragile now that network integration and device support have changed. Neither provider's marketing claim is a substitute for testing your own commute, workplace and home.
If speeds matter for demanding personal use, make a like-for-like test on compatible devices, near the same time of day. Record upload, download, latency, whether a normal voice call stays connected and how the signal behaves indoors. Upload stability may matter more than a one-off peak download for a personal video call.
Can you use these SIMs for hotspot or home broadband replacement?
Talkmobile explicitly advertises personal tethering on its phone plans. Its acceptable-use policy restricts the SIM to private, personal and legitimate consumer use, rather than general business use. Lyca's plan and acceptable-use restrictions should also be checked for your intended device and use, especially on products sold as unlimited. A phone hotspot for a laptop is not automatically the same contractual use as leaving a SIM in a 4G/5G home router all month.
If your aim is to replace household broadband, confirm the operator explicitly permits your intended device and use before comparing data allowance and sustained performance; do not assume a consumer phone SIM permits a permanent router or a paid-work connection. Our hotspot and tethering guide covers that use case separately.
Do Lyca Mobile and Talkmobile both offer eSIM, Wi-Fi Calling and 5G?
Yes, both now advertise these features for eligible customers and compatible devices. A blanket claim that Talkmobile has no eSIM or that Lyca has no Wi-Fi Calling is outdated. The buying question is whether the feature works on your specific phone, plan and activation method.
- eSIM: Lyca advertises instant eSIM ordering on qualifying products; Talkmobile says eSIM is supported on compatible SIM-only plans. Confirm new activation versus physical-to-eSIM conversion, replacement handling and the phone's eSIM support.
- Wi-Fi Calling: Both have current official Wi-Fi Calling information. A visible settings toggle does not guarantee service registration; check your model against the provider's compatibility advice and test actual calls.
- 4G Calling / VoLTE: Older phones can use 4G for data without being suitable for all network voice functions after the UK's 3G shutdowns. Verify calls, not just signal bars.
- 5G: Both advertise 5G access in supported areas with suitable phones. Neither should be chosen solely because a tariff card says 5G.
- Security texts and number transfers: If you use banking verification by SMS, test the new service with a temporary number before moving your main one when possible.
Our UK eSIM support guide and Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE comparison give broader device checks.
What is the difference between Lyca prepaid plans and Talkmobile contracts?
Lyca's plan families and Talkmobile's contract lengths are not interchangeable. This matters even if two offers have the same monthly-looking headline.
A Lyca 30-day prepaid bundle typically provides a fixed period of calls, texts and data paid in advance, with renewal arrangements and separate rules for credit outside the bundle. It is not necessarily a contract with the same billing and cancellation terms as Talkmobile's 30-day rolling agreement.
Lyca also has distinct pay-monthly and longer-term products, including separate 12- and 24-month terms. Do not assume a large discount on one of those products is available on the prepaid rolling version, or that any allowance or roaming cap carries over unchanged.
Talkmobile sells 30-day contracts and 12-month contracts. The latter can carry a lower introductory price, but the remaining months still count towards the commitment. Talkmobile currently advertises no annual CPI/RPI price rises on its plans; this does not mean optional out-of-plan or international rates are frozen forever, or that a promotion continues after its stated end.
The question to ask before signing up
If you might leave in three months, what will it cost to leave? A rolling product is usually a better starting point than a 12- or 24-month commitment if the network is untested or your circumstances change frequently. For any contract, read the minimum term, notice requirements, cancellation charge, introductory payment schedule and device or credit checks. Prepaid and pay-monthly eligibility can differ.
For a fuller explanation of these models, use our PAYG vs SIM-only guide and SIM-only price-rise guide.
Which provider is better at controlling unexpected costs?
The safer choice is the plan whose renewal and out-of-bundle rules you understand and can control. Lyca prepaid users should know whether their plan auto-renews, what happens to leftover credit, and how data or international calls are charged after allowances run out. Lyca also publishes a roaming spend-cap facility, including the ability to disable chargeable roaming use.
Talkmobile customers should check their account's spending cap, international rates, roaming threshold and whether boosters renew or expire. Its inclusive roaming rules can be quite generous for a named destination, yet excess data after the fair-use limit is a different cost from ordinary UK data. On either brand, a £0 cap or a block on certain services may prevent spending but can also stop a service you expected to use.
If the SIM is for a family member or a backup device, check practical controls rather than just the lowest advertised charge. Our SIM-only spending caps guide covers the wider market.
How do customer service and switching compare?
Neither low price nor an award badge proves a particular support issue will be solved quickly. Talkmobile advertises telephone and online support. Lyca provides its own account and support channels. Consider how you will reach someone when a number port, eSIM installation or billing question fails; anecdotal reviews are not an independently controlled head-to-head support test.
To keep your existing UK mobile number, the normal route is to text PAC to 65075 from your old SIM and give the code to the provider you are joining. Text INFO to 85075 to check your current contract position, or STAC to 75075 if you want to end the old service without retaining its number. A PAC is normally valid for 30 days. Do not cancel your old line separately before the transfer if keeping that number matters.
When possible, activate and test the new plan before the number transfer. Afterwards, check incoming calls, ordinary texts, mobile data and any security-code messages. Our guide to switching while keeping your number explains the process.
Who should choose Lyca Mobile and who should choose Talkmobile?
Choose Lyca Mobile if
- EE reception is stronger in your home, workplace or frequent destinations than VodafoneThree-based service.
- You ring eligible overseas telephone numbers regularly and the specific Lyca bundle covers those numbers and enough minutes.
- Its plan-specific roaming data allowance and supported countries fit your itinerary better than Talkmobile's standard new-customer limit.
- A suitable 30-day prepaid or separately checked pay-monthly plan gives you lower total costs for your real usage.
- You have confirmed that eSIM, Wi-Fi Calling and any important SMS services work on your phone.
Compare current Lyca Mobile SIM plans. Choose the exact product, open Full plan details, then its existing View Deal button. Do not assume a general UK-data card is a specialist international-calling checkout.
Choose Talkmobile if
- The VodafoneThree-based signal available where you live works better than EE.
- You mostly call UK numbers and prefer a straightforward allowance of unlimited standard UK minutes and texts.
- You need inclusive roaming in a destination on its Zone A list, such as Switzerland, that is not established for the Lyca plan you're considering.
- A 30-day Talkmobile contract suits your budget, or the fully calculated 12-month deal is genuinely better for a longer commitment.
- You want its current eSIM, Wi-Fi Calling and personal tethering capabilities and have confirmed device eligibility.
Compare current Talkmobile SIM plans. Check the data allowance, contract, roaming limit and any step-up after a promotional rate before using the card's purchase route.
Choose neither yet if local coverage is unreliable, a must-have international destination is excluded, or you have not checked how much it costs to leave a longer contract. For a different host network, consider our O2-network SIM deals instead of changing only the badge on a phone with poor reception.
Lyca Mobile vs Talkmobile: frequently asked questions
Is Lyca Mobile better than Talkmobile?
Lyca is often a better candidate if EE works better locally or you need its qualifying international minutes. Talkmobile is worth prioritising if its VodafoneThree-based coverage, UK calling allowance, 30-day deals or Zone A roaming destinations suit you better. Compare the exact offers, not only the brand.
Which has better coverage, Lyca or Talkmobile?
Lyca uses EE and Talkmobile uses Vodafone with VodafoneThree integration. Neither wins at every postcode. Check indoor 4G and real local performance using Ofcom's coverage checker before changing your number.
Does Talkmobile use the Three network now?
Talkmobile advertises automatic access to the combined Vodafone and Three networks. Availability depends on integration and local technical support; it should not be interpreted as guaranteed use of every mast or feature nationwide.
Is Talkmobile cheaper than Lyca Mobile?
Not for every data allowance and term. Compare the first and later payments, contract length, UK data actually needed, international calls and roaming costs over the same period. A discounted 12-month commitment is different from a prepaid 30-day bundle.
Does Lyca Mobile include international minutes?
Selected Lyca Mobile bundles include calls from the UK to eligible international numbers, often with a stated 100-minute allowance. Check the exact destination, mobile or landline eligibility and the chosen product. Ordinary UK minutes on Talkmobile do not automatically cover overseas telephone numbers.
Does Talkmobile include free EU roaming?
It includes roaming in its published Zone A destinations on qualifying UK plans, normally subject to 5GB inclusive data for customers joining or upgrading from March 2023. Older customer terms can differ. Its Zone A list extends beyond EU countries.
Is Lyca roaming better than Talkmobile roaming?
Sometimes. Lyca publishes different limits by plan, with some bundles offering more than 5GB in eligible EU destinations, but Talkmobile lists certain non-EU destinations in Zone A. The exact country and plan decide the better option.
Does Lyca Mobile have Wi-Fi Calling?
Yes, Lyca now advertises Wi-Fi Calling on its UK SIM plans for compatible devices. Check handset support and test calls, especially if you depend on indoor reception. Older reviews claiming that Lyca has no Wi-Fi Calling can be outdated.
Does Talkmobile have eSIM?
Yes, Talkmobile advertises eSIM for compatible SIM-only devices and plans. Check whether your exact purchase or replacement route supports eSIM and whether the phone is compatible. Older comparisons describing Talkmobile as physical-SIM-only should not be relied on.
Which is faster on 5G, Lyca or Talkmobile?
There is no reliable universal winner. Lyca is EE-based and Talkmobile connects through VodafoneThree arrangements; real 5G performance depends on local radio coverage, device, congestion and tariff. Test at the locations and times you use data.
Can I use a Talkmobile or Lyca SIM in a hotspot?
Talkmobile advertises personal tethering. For Lyca, confirm the exact plan's tethering and device restrictions. On either service, data used by a laptop counts towards the applicable ordinary data allowance; a phone SIM does not automatically authorise permanent router use.
Can I keep my number when moving from Talkmobile to Lyca or back?
Usually yes. Text PAC to 65075 from your existing number and provide the code to your new provider. Check contract exit costs first, then let the new provider complete the transfer rather than cancelling the old line manually.
