Is EE or Vodafone better for coverage?
Neither network is better in every postcode. 1pMobile uses EE's underlying UK network; Lebara uses Vodafone's. Two people in the same town may get different indoor reception depending on the building, local masts and handset.
If Vodafone already provides dependable reception throughout your home but EE struggles, a cheap 1pMobile Boost may be poor value. If EE performs better along your commute, Lebara's international minutes might not make up for dropped calls at work. Check your postcode and the actual places you use your phone through Ofcom's Map Your Mobile, which reports predicted reception rather than a guarantee for any particular room. If possible, test the prospective network before moving your main number.
Do not read the Vodafone–Three merger as an automatic promise that a Lebara customer can use all Three masts or has the same access arrangements as a Vodafone-branded contract. Nor does using EE mean 1pMobile necessarily has identical handset features, traffic management or support to EE itself. For alternative tariffs on the same underlying networks, see our EE-network SIM comparison and Vodafone-network SIM comparison.
Which is better for international calls from the UK?
Lebara is the stronger starting point if your specific country and number type are included in its international-minute allowance. Selected SIM-only plans include calls from the UK to overseas numbers, but minute quantities and eligible destinations vary by product. Calls outside the included allowance can cost extra. For India, Pakistan, Nigeria or Ukraine, confirm the exact destination and mobile or landline number you dial; an included country does not guarantee that every operator or number type qualifies.
By contrast, standard 1pMobile Boosts are primarily UK-data, UK-calls and texts bundles; conventional international voice calls normally use account credit and destination-specific rates. 1pMobile can still be the sensible purchase if you only make an occasional overseas call, or if an affordable UK bundle and the actual call charges together undercut a Lebara alternative.
When do included international calls become worth paying for?
Here is a fictional example, not the price or overseas call rate of either provider. Assume both options provide the same usable UK data and coverage, with identical renewal periods:
| Illustration | Offer A: £6 per period + 20p per overseas minute | Offer B: £8 per period, with those calls included |
|---|
| 5 eligible international minutes | £7 | £8 |
|---|
| 10 eligible international minutes | £8 | £8 |
|---|
| 20 eligible international minutes | £10 | £8 |
|---|
The break-even point is 10 minutes per paid period in this illustration. At fewer than ten minutes Offer A costs less; above ten, Offer B does — as long as those minutes really qualify for inclusion. Replace the imaginary prices and call rate with each real plan's post-promotion charge, the destination-specific mobile or landline rate and the number of eligible minutes you expect to use. Include any extra PAYG credit you will actually spend, not a second charge for credit already consumed. The cheapest bundle for UK data alone may therefore lose once regular overseas calls are included.
You can explore Lebara's international-calling SIM options and then compare the exact eligible minutes against the live Lebara plans. For UK-first usage, browse 1pMobile's bundles. These additional tracked provider pages do not replace the tariff-specific View Deal on our live cards.
WhatsApp is a separate question. Calling a person abroad through WhatsApp or FaceTime Audio typically uses Wi-Fi or mobile data, not the conventional international-minute allowance. A family that speaks over home Wi-Fi may get little benefit from paying more for traditional overseas minutes. Equally, calling an overseas number from the UK is not the same thing as using a UK SIM while physically abroad.
How do 1pMobile and Lebara roaming compare?
Both providers have useful options for short trips, but the country you visit matters as much as the gigabytes.
1pMobile advertises Roam Like Home in a list of European destinations. For eligible 30-day Boosts, the included roaming data is restricted to 14GB at most; a Boost with less UK data cannot magically supply 14GB abroad. Once the relevant roaming allowance is exhausted, extra charges may apply. Its policy also contains long-stay restrictions.
Lebara lists qualifying European destinations plus India and Ukraine under its Roam Like Home arrangements, with a maximum 30GB roaming data allowance on eligible SIM-only products. Your own package may offer less than that maximum. Country eligibility, reasonable-use restrictions and charges beyond the allowance still matter. Lebara's rules also address prolonged use abroad — this is intended for travel, not a substitute for permanently living elsewhere.
For example, if you visit India, it would be a mistake to assume that 1pMobile's European roaming benefit follows you. On the other hand, someone spending a weekend in France who needs only maps and messages might find either provider's eligible roaming allowance sufficient. Compare the destination and expected use, not just “14GB vs 30GB”. Our EU roaming SIM comparison is useful if travel is your main purchase criterion.
Important if you plan to travel with a new Lebara eSIM: Lebara says you must activate the service in the UK before leaving. Its guidance also states that Roam Like Home data is blocked for the first seven days after eSIM activation while roaming in the EU or India. If your trip starts sooner, its own help page suggests buying a roaming add-on for data. Check eligibility, cost and timing before buying; an included roaming allowance does not override the activation restriction.
Which payment model makes the total bill cheaper?
Comparing 1pMobile and Lebara as if every plan were the same “monthly SIM” obscures a crucial difference. 1pMobile offers three distinct ways to buy service, while Lebara's advertised SIM-only choices include rolling and fixed-commitment options.
| Product | What you are paying for | Main cost trap to check |
|---|
| 1pMobile 30-day Boost | An allowance for a recurring 30-day period | Renewals, out-of-bundle use and what happens if the Boost stops |
|---|
| 1pMobile classic PAYG | Calls, texts and data charged from credit | Minimum qualifying spend, even if usage is extremely low |
|---|
| 1pMobile annual prepaid | A larger upfront payment for a named annual product with periodic allowances | Upfront cash, allowance reset/validity, what can be refunded and whether it meets your usage |
|---|
| Lebara 30-day plan | Recurring SIM-only allowance without a typical long minimum commitment | Introductory versus subsequent charge, renewal and cancellation |
|---|
| Lebara 12-month option | A recurring plan with a 12-month minimum commitment | Remaining-term charges if you leave early; compare the total commitment, not just the headline payment |
|---|
1pMobile classic PAYG: the minimum spend is not optional
The familiar “1p” proposition refers to standard UK pay-per-use charges on the classic PAYG product, not a 30-day Boost. Under 1pMobile's terms updated 24 July 2026, customers who join from 1 August 2026 and use classic PAYG must spend or use at least £10 every 90 days. Earlier joining dates can have different minimum-spend periods. The requirement is for qualifying usage including Boost purchases — not a demand to spend £10 on ordinary calls as well as paying for an active Boost. If a pure PAYG account falls short, 1pMobile can deduct the difference from its credit. Failed collection may lead to suspension and eventual loss of the number.
What this means for a backup SIM: topping up £10 is not the same thing as using £10. If you make only £3 of qualifying PAYG usage in a commitment period, the published minimum-spend mechanism can deduct the £7 shortfall from your credit. If you have already used £10 on qualifying services or Boosts, you do not add a further £10 minimum charge. There is also an automatic top-up risk: under the published classic PAYG terms, if your credit balance is below £10 at the start of a commitment period, 1pMobile can attempt to top up from your stored payment details. This tops up account credit; it must not be counted as a second £10 usage fee. If you stop paying for a recurring Boost, the service reverts to PAYG and its spending and payment rules become relevant. For an emergency-only number, check the current account settings and payment obligations before ordering.
If low usage genuinely suits you, inspect 1pMobile's classic PAYG product and compare its commitment requirement with a regular bundle. Our PAYG vs SIM-only guide explains the different payment mechanisms without assuming that topping up and spending are interchangeable.
Keeping a SIM for a year? Don't overlook prepaid alternatives
1pMobile sells distinct year-long prepaid products, including a version providing 5GB of UK data every 30 days with an upfront annual payment and included UK calls and texts. It is not the same purchase as twelve individual Boosts or a normal 12-month billed contract. The provider's annual product page also describes automatic account top-ups for chargeable out-of-bundle use when the usage balance runs low. If you are buying the annual product to avoid surprise charges, check that setting, the reset of the data allowance, the precise validity and refund conditions. You can inspect 1pMobile's annual 5GB prepaid option and compare the actual upfront cost with a similar Lebara plan over the same dates.
To compare two plans fairly, use the same real calendar dates, usable data and likely overseas calls. Add discounted payments, later renewals and any unavoidable extras. For Lebara's 12-month option, its published terms provide for an early-exit charge based on the plan price and remaining months (including part-months). Don't treat a discounted 12-month tariff as a rolling one you can cancel without consequences.
30 days is not a calendar month. Twelve consecutive 30-day periods cover 360 days, not 365. Depending on activation and validity, uninterrupted service across a full calendar year may need a thirteenth paid period. That calculation is not a universal rule for calendar-month billing or 1pMobile's named annual prepaid product. Use the actual payment and expiry dates for each plan.
A lower headline price is a poor bargain if the plan runs out of data, drops reception or commits you to payments after you expect to leave. Use the tracked offers above for current prices; this editorial comparison deliberately does not declare a permanent price winner.
eSIM, Wi-Fi Calling and 5G: check the exact combination
Both brands offer 5G on eligible services and can support Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling on compatible devices. Those capabilities are not guaranteed for every handset or account configuration merely because the host network supports them. If you rely on indoor calls, check your model, software and tariff rather than buying only from a “5G included” badge.
For eSIM, the practical difference is how you join. 1pMobile offers eSIM to eligible users with compatible handsets; converting or replacing an existing SIM may incur a fee. As of the 21 October 2026 review, Lebara's published self-service eSIM route for new customers was limited to the Apple iPhone Air, while existing customers had a separate conversion process. A handset that supports eSIM technically is not automatically approved for new Lebara service. If an eSIM is essential, verify your exact device and sign-up route before buying, especially if you are travelling soon.

Which should you choose? Four real buying situations
1. Your priority is cheap UK data, and EE works at home. Shortlist a suitable 1pMobile Boost and compare its full-period cost with Lebara's equivalent data allowance. If both networks work for you, neither wins automatically: compare like-for-like allowances and renewals. See current 1pMobile offers.
2. You call eligible overseas landlines or mobiles every week. Start with Lebara's included minutes, then calculate the cost of those exact calls on 1pMobile. For instance, Lebara's general international-country list names Ukraine (Kyivstar); that is not a promise that every Ukrainian mobile number is covered. If the country, network or number type you need is excluded, the headline allowance may add no value. See current Lebara offers.
3. You travel to India or Ukraine, or use a lot of data on qualifying European trips. Check Lebara's destination-specific Roam Like Home terms first. But don't assume every handset can be ordered on eSIM or that a new eSIM will have roaming data immediately. Check your actual trip dates and data requirements before buying.
4. You need a secondary number or unusually low usage. Consider 1pMobile classic PAYG only after accounting for its minimum-spend condition. For regular light data, a Boost or a prepaid annual bundle might be more sensible; for a short stay, avoiding a 12-month commitment can matter more than a small apparent discount.
If the real decision is international-call offers on two specialist networks, Lebara vs Lyca Mobile addresses that different pairing. If you want two EE-based propositions, see 1pMobile vs Lyca Mobile. This article focuses on 1pMobile versus Lebara rather than duplicating those comparisons.
How do you switch between 1pMobile and Lebara and keep your number?
You can normally keep your UK number when changing between the providers even though their underlying networks differ. Text PAC to 65075 from your current SIM and give the code to the new provider. Do not cancel the old service first if you want the number transferred. If you do not wish to keep your number, STAC to 75075 is a different switching route. Check any remaining contract payments and treatment of unused PAYG credit before you move; standard switching rules do not cancel legitimate early-exit charges. For step-by-step help see how to keep your mobile number when switching.
1pMobile vs Lebara: frequently asked questions
Is 1pMobile cheaper than Lebara?
Not at every data allowance or time horizon. 1pMobile's 30-day Boost, annual prepaid option and Lebara's rolling or 12-month plans have different payment structures. Compare the same data, time period and expected international usage using the live offers above.
Do 1pMobile and Lebara use the same mobile network?
No. 1pMobile uses EE's UK radio network and Lebara uses Vodafone's. Check reception where you actually live and work rather than assuming one has better UK-wide coverage for everyone.
Is Lebara roaming free in India?
Lebara includes India within Roam Like Home on eligible SIM-only plans, subject to allowances, fair use and activation conditions. It is not unrestricted unlimited roaming. Its new-eSIM roaming data restrictions are particularly important if you travel soon after activation.
Can I use eSIM and Wi-Fi Calling on either provider?
Both have relevant support, but not every device and new-customer activation route is eligible. 1pMobile supports eligible eSIM onboarding; Lebara's new-customer eSIM device restrictions need special attention. For Wi-Fi Calling, verify your exact handset and account settings.
Bottom line: pick the network that serves your everyday locations, then compare the full cost of the same usable service. Lebara's eligible international calls and travel benefits can outweigh a small UK-price difference; 1pMobile's distinct PAYG, rolling and prepaid options may be more useful when you mainly need EE-based UK service.
