International calling guide

Best SIM for Calling Hong Kong from the UK

For calls from the UK to ordinary Hong Kong (+852) mobiles and landlines, compare a Lebara or Lyca Mobile plan that explicitly covers the destination and the number you ring. If you also need a new UK SIM, that may be the simplest way to combine data, domestic calls and international minutes. If your existing UK line works well, a qualifying calling add-on from Three, Vodafone or another network may cost less than switching.

The detail that matters most is the exact product, not the operator's international-calling reputation. Hong Kong has a separate dialling code from mainland China, and one Lyca offer can include +852 when a broader provider overview does not list it. A UK tariff card also can't tell you whether its international allowance reaches the eight-digit Hong Kong number you need.

Start with the Lebara UK SIMs we compare and our Lyca Mobile UK deals if you are shopping for a replacement line. To assess international minutes and not just UK data, review Lebara's international calling options and explore Lyca's international plans through our confirmed partner links. These lead to the operators' broader options, not a guaranteed checkout for one Hong Kong-inclusive tariff.

Should you buy a new SIM, add an option or use an app to call Hong Kong?

Decide how you will call before you choose a SIM. The six cards above compare ordinary UK SIM deals, showing data, commitment, current price and each offer's tracked View Deal route. They are not a ranking of the cheapest ways to phone Hong Kong, and no domestic allowance figure alone certifies Hong Kong voice minutes.

Your actual needSensible first comparisonWhat could make the wrong choice expensive
A new main UK SIM plus regular calls to Hong KongA qualifying Lebara or Lyca planThe plan lacks +852 inclusion, covers the wrong number type or loses its introductory saving
Frequent +852 calls while keeping a good UK contractYour network's eligible calling add-on versus a second calling serviceA recurring fee, then still paying once the allowance runs out
Existing Three Pay Monthly accountA Hong Kong-eligible Call Abroad optionConfusing its destination list with the different Three PAYG product
Existing Vodafone UK accountThe applicable International Saver or other ExtraAssuming a Vodafone-branded Extra comes with an unrelated Lebara plan
One or two short conventional callsVerified PAYG or paid app-to-phone ratesPer-call rounding, minimum top-up, connection fees and credit expiry

A Hong Kong business hotline or unusual numberA service that confirms that full numberSpecial-service or non-standard number exclusions

If you will keep your current UK subscription either way, compare only the additional cost of the Hong Kong calls. If you will replace it completely, compare the old total bill with the new SIM's full normal cost, including any commitment and international excess charges. These are different calculations.

Is calling Hong Kong the same as calling China?

No. Hong Kong's telephone country code is +852. Mainland China uses +86, Macau +853 and Taiwan +886. An operator may market a plan as covering "China" or even "Greater China", but neither phrase proves that ordinary Hong Kong numbers are included. Look for Hong Kong in the exact tariff's destination and eligible-number rules.

This isn't a theoretical difference. Lyca has published a China-labelled UK bundle whose benefits distinguish calls to mainland China from a separate allowance covering Hong Kong and certain other destinations. Other regular Lyca products also list Hong Kong explicitly. The small-print destination table tells you more than the product name.

The reverse also holds: included +852 minutes can't be used for +86 or +853 calls. That matters when family, suppliers or colleagues are spread across Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macau. Ask each person for their complete international-format number, and count the allowances separately where the product does.

How do you dial a Hong Kong number from the UK?

For an ordinary Hong Kong mobile or geographic fixed line, dial +852 followed by the eight-digit local number. There is no separate area code to add and no UK-style leading zero to remove.

ExampleHow to dial from a UK mobileImportant distinction
Fictional Hong Kong mobile `6123 4567``+852 6123 4567`Eight local digits after +852
Fictional Hong Kong fixed line `2345 6789``+852 2345 6789`No city dialling code to add
Fictional mainland China numberStarts `+86`, not `+852`China minutes and Hong Kong minutes can be separate
A local short service numberAsk for an internationally reachable numberAdding +852 may not make a domestic hotline work

The examples are invented formats, not contacts to call. Hong Kong's telecoms authority, OFCA, publishes the official numbering plan and explains conventional and IP telephone services. Standard fixed lines often start with 2 or 3, while mobiles use several ranges. OFCA also identifies 58-prefixed Class 2 IP-telephony numbers, which must not be assumed to qualify for an ordinary fixed-line allowance. An eight-digit format or familiar prefix is not proof of a standard international rate; confirm the full number's category with the calling provider.

Does a Hong Kong number's prefix show which operator it uses?

No. Hong Kong allows mobile number portability, so a subscriber can keep a number after changing local network. OFCA's mobile number portability explanation confirms the arrangement. If a paid calling service sets rates by local operator, check how it classifies the full number instead of guessing from the prefix.

Lebara or Lyca: which is better for calling Hong Kong?

Neither is the guaranteed winner for every +852 call. Both are worth comparing when you need one UK line for everyday use and calls to Hong Kong. They use different UK host networks, which matters if one has a markedly better signal where you spend your time.

Does Lebara include Hong Kong?

Lebara names Hong Kong in an operator-published international destination list, although that document predates this guide and does not establish the entitlement of a SIM sold today. Lebara's eligible international-minute products can cover standard mobile and landline calls subject to the selected tariff's terms. Its UK plans use Vodafone's network. That makes Lebara worth checking if you want one SIM for domestic service and calls to Hong Kong — but the specific +852 inclusion must be confirmed before choosing a deal.

Three details can still overturn an attractive offer. First, Hong Kong must appear in the specific plan's current destination terms, not just a historical list. Second, enough minutes must remain after any other international destinations that share the allowance. Third, calls beyond the allowance, or calls to special numbers, can be chargeable even when the country is listed.

Compare Lebara's current plans on DealPriceCheck for UK data, contract and renewal, then check Lebara's international terms through our Awin link. Our catalogue compares the UK deal, while the operator's terms decide whether your +852 calls are eligible. Then use the existing offer-specific View Deal for the UK plan you choose.

Does Lyca include Hong Kong?

Some Lyca UK products do, so check product by product. Selected Lyca UK SIM products expressly list Hong Kong in their international-minute destinations. The National Plus family is one example, and a China-focused product has separately advertised minutes to Hong Kong alongside a different mainland China allowance. Lyca uses EE's UK network, so its ordinary SIMs can be attractive if EE gives better local reception than Vodafone-based alternatives.

There is an unusual discrepancy within Lyca's own material: its general destination table omits Hong Kong, while its China-focused comparison and particular product pages explicitly name it. Neither "all Lyca SIMs include Hong Kong" nor "Lyca never includes Hong Kong" is a safe rule. The exact product's destination panel and checkout conditions decide the entitlement, including the number type, shared minutes, activation eligibility and renewal.

See our Lyca SIM catalogue for everyday service, and browse Lyca's international plans via our approved partner route when +852 is the deciding benefit. For calls outside any allowance, review Lyca's international rates through Awin. The general affiliate links don't promise that a named Hong Kong product is available at that destination.

How do you compare Lebara and Lyca fairly?

Compare one specific eligible offer from each on five points: useful UK data, the normal renewal price instead of a temporary one, confirmed +852 number types, billable international minutes across all the countries you call, and UK reception where you need it. Add any minimum commitment and the rate after the included minutes run out.

If both offers cover your contacts and you need an everyday UK SIM, the more convenient plan with the lower total cost over your likely usage period wins, not the provider with the bigger international-calling slogan. Our Lebara vs Lyca Mobile comparison covers wider network and plan differences. This page is about calling Hong Kong numbers.

Can you call Hong Kong more cheaply on Three, Vodafone, EE, O2 or 1pMobile?

Often yes, so check before you cancel a UK plan that already works. See whether the same account can add or discount calls to +852. Add-on eligibility, included minutes and out-of-bundle rules matter more than the name of the network's international service.

Can Three Pay Monthly customers add Hong Kong calling?

Eligible Three Pay Monthly Call Abroad add-ons list Hong Kong, providing an alternative to replacing a UK SIM. This is a separately purchased calling benefit, not a promise that every Three Pay Monthly tariff includes +852 minutes. Three's standard Pay As You Go Call Abroad add-on has a different, shorter destination list that does not name Hong Kong. Similar product names do not mean identical coverage.

If you already pay Three each month, compare your current plan plus an eligible Call Abroad add-on with the full cost of an eligible Lebara or Lyca replacement. Take into account the add-on's duration, whether it renews, how much of the allowance you will use and the charges after it expires. A new Three SIM from our tracked offers is a separate commitment, not an add-on at no UK service cost.

Does Vodafone include Hong Kong?

Yes, on certain Extras. Hong Kong appears in Vodafone's published International Saver Extra destinations and in some other international Extras. Even the PAYG international options have separate eligibility rules and country lists, and a plan that works for one Vodafone account may not be offered to another.

For an existing Vodafone customer, compare the existing UK plan plus an eligible Hong Kong Extra plus chargeable excess minutes against the whole price of a replacement SIM. If an Extra auto-renews, include any additional periods or cancellation steps. You can review Vodafone UK plans if you're considering a change to your domestic service. Lebara uses Vodafone's UK radio network but doesn't give Lebara customers Vodafone-branded Extras.

Does EE include Hong Kong?

EE names Hong Kong in the destination lists for its Pay Monthly International and International Extra add-ons. That does not make +852 calls inclusive on every EE SIM, and the separate EE PAYG Rest of World minutes list does not name Hong Kong. If you are on PAYG, check the current Hong Kong charge rather than buying that pack on the strength of its name.

For a customer already paying EE, compare the account's Hong Kong option and excess rates with the price of moving to an eligible Lyca plan that uses EE's underlying radio network. The host network is shared, but the international-minute entitlements are not. Our EE provider page compares underlying UK plans and doesn't certify Hong Kong minutes.

Can O2 customers get cheaper calls to Hong Kong?

O2 lists Hong Kong among the destinations for eligible PAYG international discounts. Its Pay Monthly International Bolt On is a different product: it reduces the applicable per-minute international rate for an additional fee, rather than offering a fixed pot of free Hong Kong minutes. The availability of discounted or bundled calls depends on the exact account. A reduced rate is not the same as an included-minute allowance.

If you call only occasionally, test whether a lower rate saves more than the recurring access fee. If you talk at length, the same deal may look better. The calculation needs the Hong Kong mobile or fixed-line rate for your own O2 product, the Bolt On charge if any and your expected minutes. See our O2 UK SIM listings only if a replacement base SIM is genuinely on the table.

Is 1pMobile cheap for Hong Kong calls?

Not necessarily. Inexpensive UK service doesn't mean cheap Hong Kong voice. 1pMobile's standard UK bundle or Boost shouldn't be treated as a source of inclusive international voice minutes. For occasional calls, the question is what your plan charges from account credit to +852, not its ordinary domestic per-minute headline. If that suits your few calls, you may not need a new main SIM. If it doesn't, compare a paid international calling method or a plan whose international terms include your destination. Our 1pMobile offers cover UK service, not a Hong Kong voice-price promise.

What is the real cost of calling Hong Kong?

It depends on call volume and on which product type you pay for. The cheapest-looking line on a comparison can mislead, because a £7 international add-on and a £14 complete SIM do not cost the same thing if you still pay your existing UK plan underneath the add-on.

This is an entirely fictional illustration. The prices and quantities are invented and are not quotes from Lebara, Lyca, Three, Vodafone, EE, O2, 1pMobile or any calling provider. Assume all three options serve the same eligible Hong Kong numbers, bill in identical whole-minute units, run for the same period, have no connection charges and give acceptable UK service.

Hong Kong billable minutesA: existing SIM + PAYGB: replace SIMC: existing SIM + add-onLowest total
20£12.80£14.00£17.00A
80£21.20£14.00£17.00B
140£29.60£17.60£17.00C
240£43.60£35.60£17.00C
400£66.00£64.40£57.00C
500£80.00£82.40£82.00A again

The formulas are A = £10 + £0.14 × minutes, B = £14 + £0.18 × max(0, minutes − 120) and C = £17 + £0.25 × max(0, minutes − 240). For whole billable minutes, A is cheapest up to 28 minutes, B from 29 to 136, C from 137 to 481 and A again from 482. The final reversal happens because Option C turns costly once its included allowance ends.

This isn't a recommendation of any price. It shows why the answer changes with calling volume. In the real world, a second bundle, a different excess rate, the number type or an eligibility condition could shift every threshold. Never divide a bundle fee by its maximum included minutes and treat the result as your real per-minute cost.

What makes a Hong Kong call cost more than it looks?

Rounding is one cause. If a calling service rounds each started minute up, ten calls of 65 seconds each could use 20 billable minutes although the conversation total is under eleven minutes. A service that bills by the second behaves differently. Before you buy, check connection fees, call rounding, shared international-minute pools, included number types, excess rates, minimum top-ups and credit expiry.

Compare the same calendar horizon too. Twelve 30-day bundles cover 360 days, not 365, so uninterrupted service for a full year may need another period. When you change your main SIM, include any legitimate early-exit cost from your current provider and the new plan's normal price after a promotion.

Do Hong Kong fixed lines and business numbers qualify?

Ordinary eight-digit Hong Kong mobile and fixed numbers can be covered by eligible international-minute plans, but business helplines and some IP or non-geographic numbers may not be. "Calls to Hong Kong" covers more than one kind of number.

Someone phoning a family mobile every Sunday only needs to ask whether the tariff covers standard +852 mobile calls. Someone phoning a Hong Kong bank may be given a short local hotline, a premium service number or an overseas-contact number, and these are not interchangeable. Ask the organisation for its international customer-service number, and check whether your calling product treats it as an ordinary fixed line, a mobile or a special service before you try repeatedly.

Don't assume a number starting with 2 or 3 automatically qualifies, or that a mobile prefix identifies the current local network. OFCA's numbering and portability rules make those shortcuts unreliable for billing. A provider's country inclusion still has to be matched to the full number.

Do WhatsApp and other app calls work for Hong Kong?

For app users, yes. If both people use WhatsApp, Signal, FaceTime Audio, WeChat or another compatible service over the internet, app-to-app calling doesn't use conventional UK-to-Hong Kong voice minutes. Over Wi-Fi it normally avoids a charge from your UK mobile operator for international voice, although broadband and mobile data still cost something. App-to-app voice can't automatically call an ordinary landline or someone without the same service.

A paid app-to-phone service is different. It may connect your app to an ordinary Hong Kong telephone number even when the recipient has no app, but calls can carry their own per-minute rate, connection charge or minimum credit. Some services use a UK access number, so the cost of that access call may matter too. Don't confuse these products with free internet chats.

What is the time difference between the UK and Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is eight hours ahead of the UK in winter and seven hours ahead during British Summer Time. Hong Kong stays on UTC+8 all year, while the UK switches between GMT and BST. A call that suits you at 8pm in London may land in the early hours of the next morning in Hong Kong, so before you pay for a large voice allowance, estimate how many conventional conversations people will realistically answer.

Is calling Hong Kong the same as roaming there?

No. Dialling +852 from Britain is international calling. Using your UK SIM while physically in Hong Kong is roaming. If you dial a +44 UK number whose owner happens to be in Hong Kong, that is normally a UK-number call from your side, and their roaming charges may be separate. None of the three automatically gives you the benefits of the others. Built-in network Wi-Fi Calling is also not a free app-to-app call, since using the normal dialler for +852 may still be rated as international voice.

Should you port your main UK number?

You can keep your UK number when you change mobile provider. Text PAC to 65075 from the existing UK SIM and give that code to the new provider. Text INFO to 85075 to check switching information such as exit charges. Don't cancel the original line yourself before you arrange the switch. Our UK number-switching guide explains the process, and Ofcom's guidance covers the consumer rules.

Alternatively, keep your main UK line and use a compatible second SIM or eSIM for conventional Hong Kong calls. Check the new product's SIM format, your handset's dual-SIM limits and the outgoing-line setting. Accidentally dialling +852 from the original UK SIM can turn an included call on one account into an expensive charge on the other. A second subscription also has its own renewal and credit conditions.

For mostly app-based calls, UK data and reception may matter more than an overseas voice allowance. Our mobile data usage guide helps work out a sensible allowance before you browse current SIM-only deals.

Which option should you take forward?

You need a new everyday UK SIM. Compare the six current Lebara and Lyca offers above, open Full plan details for a likely candidate and check the same tariff's +852 mobile or landline entitlement and post-allowance rate. If you want a more international-focused product, use the confirmed general Awin links above. Buy through the appropriate existing View Deal route, not an unrelated operator product just because it advertises more data.

You already pay for Three, Vodafone, EE or O2. Check the Hong Kong option offered to your account. A compatible add-on or discounted rate may solve the problem without a new UK commitment. Three Pay Monthly and PAYG have different Hong Kong destination lists, and that distinction alone can change the outcome.

You call for only a few minutes. Compare verified PAYG and paid app-to-phone rates against the fixed charge of an add-on. A regular monthly international allowance may go largely unused.

You mostly talk through internet apps. Choose UK data and reliable reception first, and keep a conventional calling method for people, businesses or landlines that can't use the same app.

Our general UK international-calling SIM guide explains product categories across destinations. This guide stays on +852 Hong Kong calls from the UK and the purchasing decisions specific to them.

Calling Hong Kong from the UK: frequently asked questions

Which UK SIM is best for calling Hong Kong?

For a new everyday UK SIM, start with a specific Hong Kong-inclusive Lebara or Lyca tariff whose UK data, coverage and normal renewal cost suit you. Lyca names Hong Kong in particular product offers, and Lebara has named it in its published country list; neither proves that every current SIM card includes +852 calls. If you already have a satisfactory UK network, a qualifying international add-on or PAYG may cost less than switching. There is no permanent cheapest choice for everyone.

Does Lebara include Hong Kong in international minutes?

Lebara lists Hong Kong in a published destination document, but that older list does not prove that the SIM currently on sale includes +852 calls. Check the specific tariff's Hong Kong mobile/landline eligibility, included minutes and charges after the allowance.

Does Lyca Mobile include Hong Kong calls?

Some Lyca UK products do. The operator has listed Hong Kong in the international destinations of individual UK SIM products, and a China-focused offer has separately advertised Hong Kong calling. Because its broad international overview doesn't list the same destination, check the exact product instead of assuming every Lyca SIM includes or excludes +852 calls.

Can a SIM with China minutes call Hong Kong?

Not automatically. Hong Kong uses +852, while mainland China uses +86. Some packages name both destinations and may allocate different minutes to each. Only the plan's specific Hong Kong entitlement settles the question.

Does Three Call Abroad cover Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is named in Three's eligible Pay Monthly Call Abroad add-on list, not its standard PAYG Call Abroad list. You need the applicable add-on on your account; the underlying UK minutes alone do not establish Hong Kong calling entitlement.

Is Hong Kong included in Vodafone International Saver?

Yes, it appears on Vodafone's published International Saver destination list, but you need an eligible Vodafone account with the correct Extra. Other Pay Monthly, PAYG and PAYG Plus products can have different country lists and renewal rules.

Is Hong Kong calling included in O2's international options?

Hong Kong appears on O2's eligible PAYG discounted-destination list. A Pay Monthly International Bolt On can instead lower the charge per billable minute for a fee. Check the exact product, receiving number and rate; neither option by itself proves free included +852 minutes.

What number do I dial to call Hong Kong from the UK?

Dial +852 followed by the usual eight-digit Hong Kong mobile or fixed-line number. You normally don't add a separate area code or remove a leading domestic zero. Short numbers and certain specialised services need separate confirmation.

Can I call a Hong Kong landline through WhatsApp for free?

Not through an ordinary free app-to-app call, because the recipient usually needs the same internet application. A separate paid app-to-phone service may reach a conventional Hong Kong landline, subject to its rates and terms.

Is calling Hong Kong from the UK the same as roaming there?

No. A call from Britain to a +852 number is international calling, while roaming is using your UK SIM while physically in Hong Kong. A Hong Kong voice allowance from Britain doesn't prove you have Hong Kong roaming data.

Bottom line: check the exact eight-digit +852 number and its eligible type, decide whether you need a new UK SIM at all, then compare the full price of an included-minute plan with the extra cost of an existing-network option. Our live Lebara and Lyca cards help with UK tariffs, and the confirmed partner routes help you look into the international plans, but neither replaces a product-specific eligibility check.

DealPriceCheck compares selected UK deals rather than every service. Prices, destinations, allowances and availability may change, so confirm the chosen plan's current terms and checkout price. Some links may earn us commission at no extra cost to you.
