What is a 5G SIM-only deal — and when is it worth it?
A 5G SIM-only deal is a mobile plan without a handset that can access 5G on a compatible phone where the provider has 5G coverage. Faster downloads and more responsive connections are possible, but “5G included” is not a promise of a particular speed at your address. It is worth choosing for useful local performance and an acceptable total price — not the 5G label alone. A reliable 4G connection may serve you better than patchy 5G where you spend most of your day.
Check reception at your actual addresses before comparing prices
Start with Ofcom's Map Your Mobile. Enter your home postcode, then check your workplace or another regular destination. The indoor and outdoor coverage estimates are predictions; the separate video-streaming and video-call performance scores use real-world measurements aggregated across a postal district (or a wider postal area where necessary). Those scores are not 5G speed tests at your address. A district can score well even when one building has poor reception. Thick walls, local congestion, a train journey and the phone itself can all change your experience. Cross-check a shortlisted provider's own coverage and plan eligibility before ordering.
If two affordable offers use different networks, eliminate the one with the weaker signal where you need it before comparing the last pound on the monthly bill. If the evidence is uncertain, a 30-day rolling 5G SIM is often a more manageable way to try a network than immediately accepting a long minimum term. Read the cancellation rules; “rolling” does not mean the first month is free or that every charge is refundable.
A smaller mobile brand is not necessarily a different radio network
Many smaller brands use another operator's UK network, making the live card's Network field a useful starting point. However, using the same underlying network is not proof that every plan has identical 5G access, speeds, Wi-Fi Calling, eSIM or 5G+ support. Ofcom maps the main underlying networks; check the specific brand and tariff for service eligibility. If a card mentions more than one network, do not assume every handset, feature or mast is available in the same way on every partner brand.
For a closer comparison by signal footprint, browse EE-network SIM deals, Three-network SIM deals, Vodafone-network SIM deals and O2-network SIM deals. Those pages answer the which network? question; this page is for choosing a currently listed 5G tariff.
Will your phone and plan support the same type of 5G?
You need three things together: a 5G-capable handset, a 5G-enabled plan and 5G coverage. A 5G-labelled deal cannot upgrade a 4G-only phone's radio. For a concrete example, Apple lists the iPhone XR with 4G LTE, whereas the iPhone 12 specifications include 5G. Check the exact model and variant in the manufacturer's specifications and the chosen provider's compatibility information; a generic model-family name is not enough to establish every network feature. A 5G SIM plan can still be useful in a compatible 4G handset, but it will connect at 4G where available until you move to a 5G phone.
There is also a distinction between ordinary 5G and newer standalone 5G services, often marketed as 5G+. Do not assume that every tariff marked “5G” unlocks every advanced network feature. For example, EE's 5G+ requirements specify compatible plans, SIMs, devices and locations; Vodafone likewise lists a compatible device, eligible plan and 5G+ coverage. These eligibility rules can change. If standalone 5G matters to you, confirm it on the exact plan and handset before paying a premium.
Ordinary 5G is enough for many people. A more expensive tier is worth considering only when its extra service or measurable local performance solves a problem you actually have; a premium label alone is not evidence that your day-to-day experience will improve.
How much data is enough for a 5G SIM?
5G can move data faster, but it does not inherently charge you more gigabytes for the same activity. What changes is behaviour: faster connections make high-resolution streaming, larger downloads and hotspot use easier, which can increase consumption. EE explains this distinction. Use your current phone's monthly mobile-data history as the starting point, rather than buying the largest allowance because the plan supports 5G.
| How you'll use it | What to look for in the live deals | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly messaging, maps and Wi-Fi at home | A smaller affordable data allowance with reliable local coverage | Paying for 100GB just to obtain the 5G label |
| Daily commuting, frequent video and music | Enough monthly data for actual usage, good coverage along your route | Choosing only by an advertised peak speed |
| Regular hotspot use for a laptop | A larger allowance, permitted tethering and acceptable speed policies | Assuming every phone SIM can be used in a dedicated 5G router |
| Heavy usage that is difficult to predict | Compare unlimited SIM deals, including fair-use and roaming rules | Reading “unlimited UK data” as unlimited speeds or unlimited data abroad |
| Unsure whether a new network works indoors | Contract → 30-day rolling, then check total cost and notice period | Locking into a long contract before testing local performance |
For a separate SIM in a tablet, laptop or mobile router, the product and device rules need more scrutiny. Our data-only SIM and router guide covers that different buying decision; a normal 5G phone plan is not automatically a router-approved tariff.
The cheapest first month might not be the cheapest 5G plan
Use the live Price, Data, Contract and Network filters, then Sort the shortlist. Open Full plan details to compare promotional months, the price afterwards, minimum-term cost, in-contract increases, speed restrictions and cancellation terms. Do not compare minimum-term totals across unlike contracts as if they covered the same period: a rolling plan's displayed minimum may cover only its first month, while a 12- or 24-month plan's minimum covers far longer. For a fair budget comparison, work out what each would cost over the same period you expect to keep it; any assumed future rolling price is an estimate, not a guarantee. Ofcom's current price-rise guidance prohibits inflation-linked or percentage-based increases in new contracts and requires specified increases to be disclosed in pounds and pence before sign-up; it does not mean every plan has a frozen price.
Consider two hypothetical 12-month plans with otherwise identical coverage and features, assuming no upfront fees, rewards or further increases. These figures illustrate the method, not currently advertised offers:
| 12-month illustration | Calculation | Total | Effective monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offer A: £5 for three months, then £10 | (3 × £5) + (9 × £10) | £105 | £8.75 |
| Offer B: £9 throughout | 12 × £9 | £108 | £9.00 |
Offer A's £5 headline looks far cheaper, but saves only £3 over the stated year. If Offer B is genuinely rolling while Offer A ties you in, the flexibility may be worth more than £3. Conversely, if both have the same term and features, A is cheaper on these assumptions. Compare the actual live contract totals, upfront charges, conditional cashback and any future increases before deciding; do not use an illustrated price as a deal recommendation.
If your phone is still 4G-only or your preferred network has poor 5G coverage, widen the comparison to all SIM-only deals. A 5G badge should not push you into paying more than you need. For affordability-led shopping, SIM deals under £10 is the appropriate separate price-led page; for flexibility, see no-contract and 30-day SIM deals.
A final five-point check before View Deal
- Check local reception: compare indoor and outdoor coverage at home and other important addresses. Do not treat a UK-wide 5G percentage as your personal signal test.
- Check phone and plan compatibility: verify 5G support, any device-specific restrictions, SIM or eSIM activation and whether you are buying ordinary 5G or an eligible standalone tier.
- Check the usable service: look for any stated speed cap, hotspot restrictions, Wi-Fi Calling support and reasonable-use terms that matter to you. The same host network does not automatically give every brand identical features.
- Check what you will pay: distinguish introductory and later prices, any specified annual rise, minimum-term total and notice or exit conditions.
- Check extras only if you need them: eSIM deals are about digital activation, not faster speeds; EU roaming deals are about overseas allowances, not a guarantee of 5G coverage abroad.
When a live offer meets those checks, select Full plan details to read its exact terms, then use the existing View Deal button for the provider's checkout. The final contract is with the provider.
5G SIM-only deals: answers to common questions
Do 5G SIM-only plans cost more than 4G plans?
Not necessarily. Some tariffs include standard 5G access without a separate 5G surcharge; other plans cost more because of data, speed policies, contract length or extra services. Compare a specific 5G plan with a suitable alternative on coverage and total cost. A dearer 5G+ tier needs its own eligibility check — it is not automatically required for ordinary 5G.
Can I use a 5G SIM in a 4G phone?
Generally, yes, with a compatible SIM, unlocked handset and network — but it will not become a 5G phone. For example, the iPhone XR is a 4G device. A 5G-enabled handset and coverage are required to access 5G. Most compatible phones can also fall back to 4G where 5G is unavailable.
Does 5G use more data than 4G?
Not for the same task at the same quality. You may nevertheless use more data because a faster connection makes larger files, better-quality video and tethering more convenient. Your allowance remains the amount stated in the tariff, whether the signal icon says 4G or 5G.
Is every 5G SIM eligible for 5G+ or standalone 5G?
No. Advanced 5G availability can depend on the operator, plan tier, SIM provision, device and local rollout. EE and Vodafone both publish additional eligibility conditions. Choose a standard 5G deal unless a specific advanced feature is important enough to check individually.
Which UK network has the fastest 5G SIM deals?
There is no reliable permanent winner for your postcode or handset. National speed studies measure averages under particular conditions; a single buyer's experience depends on location, congestion, phone and the exact plan, including speed policies. Use local coverage and performance information to narrow the choice, then compare the offers you can actually purchase.
Can I get 5G with a 30-day rolling or eSIM plan?
Yes, where the selected tariff supports it. A 30-day contract describes how long you commit; eSIM describes how the subscription is stored on a compatible device. Neither automatically improves or reduces 5G speed. Confirm both features on the live card and provider terms.
Will UK 5G work when I travel abroad?
Not automatically. Roaming availability, local 5G partner access, included countries and overseas data limits are separate terms. Even a UK unlimited 5G plan can have a smaller roaming allowance. Check the destination and tariff before travelling; use our EU roaming SIM comparison if roaming is a deciding factor.
Keep comparing
For a different priority, use all SIM-only deals, 30-day rolling deals, unlimited data SIMs, eSIM deals or SIMs with no annual price rises. The page above remains the 5G-enabled offer comparison; linked pages cover other distinct buying priorities.
